I have recieved a new Note 3 and noticed that I am unable to edit files on my MicroSD. It is running Kitkat 4.4.2 on NC4. I read that apparently Google has made it not possible to edit your MicroSD from Kitkat, but I can not use Safestrap Recovery 3.75 to do a backup to my SD Card either. I can backup to my internal memory fine.
This is just really odd to me. It is basically like my MicroSD Slot is set to "Locked" as you can do with just regular SD cards.... I have not be able to find any suggestions. If you have any it would be great!
Thank you.

Maybe because I rooted before KK and took the leak upgrade I've never come across this but there is an app in the play store for that. Can't say for sure if it works but it's highly rated and has great reviews.

Edit : Just to make sure are you using the very latest version of safestrap?

So from what I understand, apps cannot be installed to the storage card on the S4, correct? Is this fixable with root or maybe a custom ROM? Also, when recording video, will the S4 at least be able to write to the storage card when doing that? And for something like Orange Backup that can create nandroids while in Android, does anyone know if it will be able to write to the storage card? I assume that recoveries like TWRP and CW will have no issue recognizing the card and installing zips from them?
Yes, you can tell the camera to use the SD card. Not sure about Orange Backup, but I've got TWRP on my S4 and it gave me the option of using the SD card, which I took advantage of.
Can't answer your question about custom ROM's being able to give us the app storage transfer to SD option. That would be nice, though.

Not every app. Some give you the choice to use the SD card, some don't. And if the app does not give you the choice, it's hard to move the app/data to the SD card for most programs on this release of Android OS.
There are some threads on possible work arounds, but I've read mixed results on them so far.
I have galaxy note 3,updated to android kitkat everythink gone well,, but after update finished try to backup my apps to 16 GB external sd card but,,not working
I try 10 different backup app none of them working.. is this problem cause by me or kitkat
There are quite a few posts regarding this issue. Installing the SanDisk app the playstore can fix the issue.

Which SanDisk app are you referring to?
SD card issue
I have the same problem (N9005, 32GB Samsung SD card) - after the update:
- Mybackup Pro is not able to backup on SD card (before it worked well)
- File mamager X-Plore can not create new folders on the external SD card
- similar with the Astro file manager
Only the system-own file manager can create folders. Reading from the card is possible.
After formatting the card: still the same problem.
has anyone additional information?
It's because of the security features of KK... These older apps aren't yet "approved" by Samsung. It has something to do with a simple permission to write to the sd card.
As was stated "Only the system-own file manager can create folders" as this is Samsung approned. Until the Apps are updated and the Samsung seal of approval given these may have trouble...
There is no problem if rooted...
I am truly enjoying KitKat but I wish I could get Titanium to back up to the external sd card.
I guess I will wait like everyone else for the app to get approval from Samsung. Perhaps that will come with the "official' release of KitKat.
Yes, I am rooted and it still cannot back up to the external sd.

Use External SD fix for KitKat - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
Hello,
Yesterday, I flashed 4.4.2 stock rom on my S4 i9500 through Odin. I was also successful in rooting it. then after installing titanium backup I uninstalled all the knox applications. now there were no knox warnings poping up all rooted apps were working good. Then I installed most essential root app in my phone called "foldermount". You know being a s4 owner how easy it makes your life when you can transfer all big games to the sd card and no internal memory full issue.
Now the bad part of story starts. When I opened the Foldermount it showed me an error message that To fix the error click okay and reboot the device. After rebooting all apps of phone like gallery, camera, Shealth, filemanager, music etc. Either stopped working or started showing the message that you dont have any internal memory or external sdcard on your device. In settings>storage, there it also said that 0 mb internal memory 0mb external memory. I also tried connecting my s4 to pc with usb storage option. It showed there too that internal/sdcard has total 0 memory.
So basically foldermount had screwed my phones memory. I think it had messed up the partition table of my phone. After that I reflashed my 4.4.2 and tried installing latest version of fouldermount and the whole thing happened again.
Now I have again reflashed the 4.4.2 rom. I think in 4.4.2 samsung has changed some stuff and foldermount is no longer compatible. Now I have also come to know that You cant downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3. :/
Please someone tell me alternative to Foldermount which is working on 4.4.2.
I would also like to know why foldermount no longer works on 4.4.2? is it only samsung's 4.4.2 rom or it also doesnt work on other 4.4.2 based roms.
Thanks!

4.4.2 has sd card write problem. There is a fix for this problem on the forum n then use Foldermount or may be foldermount isnt compatible with 4.4.2. They ll release a compatibility update for it. I havent rooted yet n 8.41 gb is enough as internal!

There is a easy fix for kk4.4 sd write protection issue by adding a simple line into a system file. Just search for it in the forum.

Thank you guys for replying.
I just checked the changelog of Foldermount and found this
v2.6.4
-Updated Portuguese (new translator: extream87), Polish, Latvian, German and Finnish locales. Thank you volunteers!
-All patching menus are scrollable. This should help some users that are not able to see the bottom buttons correctly in these dialogs.
-Fix a rare case where some S4/Note 3 users that update from 4.3 to 4.4 and patch the system using FolderMount leads to the disappearance of the internal/external sdcards.

I think now foldermount will work fine on S4/Note 3. If it still doesnt work then I will try fixing "write_external_storage" thing.
damn...
After using the forums for a long time without registering, just did to point out I had the same problems. Read a lot before flashing 4.2.2, all went well until installing Foldermount... wish I read this one before installing it. SD Card looks empty on phone, but fine on computer, Play Store, S Health, Story Album kept crashing. Ended up doing a factory reset I didn't need, and flashing it all over again.
I just got an S5 today and I thought I did everything correctly to get my back files up and working but so far I'm having no luck.
I backed up the entire S4 with Helium and when I put the SD card with the back up on it, I don't have an option to search the external SD card on the S5.
I've factory reset my S4, installed Helium, put the SD card in the S4 and retrieved the back and restored with no problem.
Is helium just not compatible with the S5 yet?
What I did for the time being was take my S4, put the external SD back in it, download Helium again, restore just the SMS back up (I didnt want to download ALL the apps from my google app store) and then connected the S4 to Kies and then backed up the SMS from there and restored it to the S5. It worked!
Still curious why the back up from the internal SD card didn't pick up the Carbon back up though.
Also curious why the external SD card wasn't an option on Helium like it was on the S4.
On a side note, where did I miss singing up for a Samsung cloud account? I watch a video that showed how to back up SMS via "cloud" under the accounts menu on the S4/S5. I also didnt have a "cloud" option.
Cheers
I read that... Android 4.4 block the ability for apps to read SD cards. So, all I can advice you to do is to copy the whole helium "carbon" folder & paste it into the Internal memory of the S5. Then restore backup.

I kinda feel like I read as similar statement. I just didn't think this was one of the features that would have been blocked...
Hello
I have SanDisk 64gb microsd. I have not done anything to the phone and now periodically the phone stops reading the 64gb card .It does not say unmounted just when I check gallery the photos are not there and I have to restart the phone.
I have a rooted 4.3 ROM..The only thing I can think of is ES file explorer potentially caused issues. I noticed things acting weird after I used it when I do heavily.
Please help. Any and all advice welcome. Thanks
Tried to re flash a nandroid still issues. I noticed in general my touchwiz is running so slow. I flashed sacs red theme about a month ago. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. Should not have.
It will reread it when I remount it or reboot. Not sure specifically what is causing it though.

Have you tried searching the forums for sdcard fix? Google it? There have been issues with 4.4 and sdcard reading issues. Also downloading foldermount from the playstore has helped others with issues. If all else fails reinstall rom.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Free mobile app
I searched on Google and there is not really a concise answer as to why this happens. It is a very ambigious issue, however; it seems to be a reoccuring issue with SanDisk cards and 4.4 KitKat ROMs.
What I did was completely flush out and re-installed both custom recovery and my ROM to 4.2.2
It is disappointing because I really like my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone and you'd think upgrades mean better quality product when it has not. 4.4 KitKat ROM is not that good. I don't like both CM and TW versions of KK. One feature I do not like with TW KitKat is the inability to hide icons. There are also issues with battery drain and free hotspot mod.
I don't know what is going on. When I plug my phone into the computer I can access the SD card. When I check the phone it is not reading the SD card. Don't know what the problem is.
Have you tried a different SD card? That would help you determine if it is specific to the card or potentially a phone issue.
What I will do is try and format the SD card with the phone, then put everything back on. So far, I have isolated it to ESFile explorer. Initially I did not update the apk and thought that would work. It did not.
Here's what has happened:
I use ESFile explorer to access the SD card. Then when I went into clockworkmod, I tried to delete a nandroid copy I made. It says 'failed to delete'.
Then the ROM and sdCard do not work correctly anymore, so I have to wipe and re-flash an old nandroid.
Makes me wonder if something is corrupted in the SD Card. Everything used to work fine, but now whenever I access the SD Card with ESFile explorer, even the old version of it, it causes issue.
There is a problem with some Sandisk SD cards. Evidently there was a bad batch. I had some of the same issues. My card was bad. I went to Sandisk's website and they replaced it for free. I was without my card for a week but I got a new one and everything seems to be working fine now.
Can you explain how you did this ? So an update on my situation. I can read the sd card but it will not format and nothing can be written to the card. I tried using recovery and touchwiz to format and it fails.
Can access what is on there but cannot write or format anymore. Any ideas ? At this point I swapped to a new SanDisk card I had lying around. Don't know what to do with the old card

I assume you are asking me how I got my card replaced. I did some research and found the issue mentioned here on XDA as well as on the internet. I went to Sandisk's website, http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/list/kw/microsd microsdhc/, and did some more research. I finally contacted their customer service and they told me the process for getting the replacement shipped. If I were you I would just contact their customer service on their website and let them run you through the process.
