[Q] Nexus 10 WiFi problem - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
For a few weeks now I have been having some issues with my wifi connection on my Nexus 10.
Especially when I try to communicate with other devices in my home network, for example via FTP or BitTorrent Sync, the connection is very unstable. That means that it's not only very slow but also completely loses connection from time to time. slow means anything between 30 kilobytes per seconds to 500 kilobytes per second. Transferring big files is almost impossible because it loses connection or is just dead slow. and I really hate using cables to transfer files from a computer to my android device
I already checked standard stuff like wifi channel or other devices currently downloading or using bandwidth in some kind of way but everything actually is fine, because when I use my computer which also uses wifi to connect to the internet everything works perfectly. Until a few weeks ago everything worked just fine and I get speeds up to 4 to 5 megabytes per second.
Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to test it with another Router but soon will.
Nexus 10 16 gb
Stock Android 4.4.4
MacBook Pro
OS X Mavericks
Any suggestions appreciated
Thanks

It sounds like interference. Also try turning on long preamble on your router if you're on N.

Hi.
Thanks for your answer.
I already have this app both on my Nexus 10 and my Nexus 5. My Router uses the channel which is recommended by the App. No other AP on this channel and only a few others on the adjacent channels.
Also because it works fine with my MBP and my Nexus 5 I actually ruled out "interferences" as possibility.
Anyone else?

[Q] Do you have speed problems with Wifi? (N-band)
I have wifi N router and set to N only. I have two laptop both wifi N capable. When I transfer file usung file sharing betwen two laptop I m getting speed abt 3Mb/s but when i transfer file between laptop and SGS I only get speed of 300 Kb/s. SGS support wifi N standerd then why it so. Well I use ES file explorer to access file in my laptop over Wi- Fi.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It's a mobile device, they have lower throughput and probably only 1 antenna (most 802.11n devices have 3). There are a lot of factors, but basically, all that's important is that it supports the 802.11n protocol. Optimisation may lead to faster speed boosts over time though.
Network traffic might also be set to a low priority to help ensure the phone runs reliably for other tasks, but I have no idea why exactly it's slower exactly.
I get 1.5mbs from my nas and wireless n network
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i get 19.5mb downlaoding speed
and 4.3mb uplaoding speed
on my wi-fi
my connection 500/500mb
I m talking abt internet speed. I m asking abt file transfer speed betn my SGS and laptop
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
87 Mbps according to mine
i'll grab a screen shot when i get back home
87 seems too much I only get 25 while copy file on hard drive it self
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
that's actually low for me, but is better than nothing
my PC down in the cine room gets around 218+ Mbps
I get about 80Mbps laptop <-> network (802.11n 5Ghz), and about 5Mbps SGS <-> network (802.11n 2.4Ghz). Not horrible, but certainly not wonderful. I wish it had a 5Ghz radio too, so I could turn off my 2.4Ghz stuff :-/
[Q] Do you have problems with Wifi? (N-band)
Since my phone is on it's way to the repaircenter I would like to ask you all this Question.
I have problems with my wifi connection. The strange thing is, is that my router is brandnew! b+g+N!!!
The weird part is that it has only problems with the N-band
SO I hooked up another wireless router only with the b+g band and BAM it works.
But that's just messed up to have 2 wireless routers one for laptops and one just for my mobile phone...
So can u try the same thing and give me your comments about this issue?
there was already a topic about this
however one topic we did not touch base on, on the other topic was about the B+G bands
if you read the documentations you'll noticed that for N to work at full speed, it must only listen to N no B no G
when you use Mix mode, N doesn't work well
to use N, you need 2 bands, B + G only needs 1 band
if you enable all 3 B+G+N you only get 1 band for all, so making the N useless
the trick is to update all your old hardware that still runs G or B to N
then you can use pure N, and gain full speed
the SGS phone can run up to 87 Mbps on N
meanwhile computers can go up to 280+ Mbps

Can't connect to home WPA2 wifi
Hello!
The problem is that I've been trying to connect to my home wifi like 100 times or more, but I'm still unable to get it working... The wifi it's WPA2 and it has a long sentence password...
Any ideas? Thank you!

Maybe you need to shorten your password to try.
[Q] manual wifi fix app?
Hey, like many Android users I'm often having problems with Wifi not connecting to APs. While that can be fixed by restarting Android that takes a lot of time and is more than annoying. There are some apps to solve this issue, they "fix" wifi whenever the screen is turned on (e.g. http://www.appbrain.com/app/wifi-fixer/org.wahtod.wififixer http://www.appbrain.com/app/blade-wifi-fix/com.bladewififix).
That however I don't like either as due to the fixing taking place always wifi connection becoming established takes quite a lot of time. So my question: Is there an app that fixes the wifi connection but does so only manually, e.g. by clicking a widget button?
[Q] Can't connect to Wifi?
I select my Wifi network, I enter in the password, it says connecting, authenticating, connected, remembered, then it says disconnecting, searching, authenticating, and it repeats. The H at the top never disappears, no Wifi icon ever appears, what is the issue exactly?
And yes, I am connecting to a Wireless-G signal.
Don't worry I can't connect to your home network either so it's not a problem with your phone
I suggest you delete the password from the router and try and connect .
If you connect setup again with the password .

I had the same problem and i manage to fixit with "WIFI STATIC". It's free on Market. Access your router config and add your Galaxy Mac adress, then fill the parameters in WiFi Static. It Works! Never had problems again! Oh, i think you have to put your's computer(s) mac adress too in the router.
is there really no such app? :-(

[Q] Slow download fast upload - Any fix?

My new Nexus 10 has a very slow download speed, upload is OK.
I also has a Vizio Vtab 1008 Android table that has OK download speed on the same network.
I find that I cannot watch youtube videoes in HD, and even non-HD they can time out.
I tried disabling Wi-Fi optimization in the Wi-Fi settings. I am connected to a Netis WF-2409 wireless-N router (used as an access point). I am about 5 feet from it with both the Nexus 10 and the Vizio Vtab so have a great signal.
Here are some speed test comparisons (using the Android "Speed Test" applicatinon for both devices, and tested within a few minutes of each other -- first testing Nexus, then Vizio, then Nexus again. Transfer speeds in Mbps, ping times in ms.
With the Vizio Vtab I saw 2.83 and 2.61 Mbps download. Nexus shows 0.31, 0.19, 0.23, and 0.23. Help would be appreciated.
Download Upload Ping
2.83 3.53 42 (Vizio)
2.61 3.47 31 (Vizio)
0.31 3.68 48 (Android)
0.19 3.06 51 (Android)
0.23 3.90 16 (Android)
0.23 3.89 14 (Android)
something specific to my home access point
A follow up. I stopped by the Local library with both the Nexus 10 and the Vizio Vtab.
Found that on their network the Nexus 10 was fine. Then on the way home stopped at
a Lowes (big box harware) store. Again performance fine. Just tied with the second of
my two home Netis access points and less than 1 Mbps upload. I would say that there is
a problem with the Netis access point however the Vizio table, laptops, Roku video, are
all working find with it. What sort of incompatibility could there be with this access point
that specifically does not work well with the Nexus 10?
My WiFi works really well. I pay for 18mbps and can regularly get 16 on my tablet. Have you tried using Wi-Fi analyzer in the market to see if there is a better channel to use? Beyond trying that, I have no clue

Yes, I have used Wi-Fi analyzer. I have a clear spot for the channel. I have two of the same model Wi-Fi units, one at each end of the house set on different channels. Same slow download using either one of these with the Nexus 10. And yet fast download on either one using a Vizio Vtab 1008 Android tablet. The odd bit here is that Nexus 10 is slow, and yet older Android table is fast.
Seems like you've tried the obvious. I don't know what your thoughts are on custom ROMs but it might be worth trying just as a basis of comparison.
Also, with root access you can use an app called "Pimp My ROM" to easily apply some internet build.prop tweaks
Even flashing a good kernel may help.
Ultimately, it could also be a hardware problem with the device. Android 4.2.1 does have some WiFi bugs but download speeds that slow seems like either your device or router/network configuration.
Thanks for the response. My plan is to get a tcpdump of the Nexus 10 and the Vizio tablet running the speed test app and see what I can learn by comparing those. Because the Nexus seemed quite happy on the two public netwoks today I am suspecting something about the configuration of the Netis WF-2409 Wi-Fi unit is not working well with the Nexus. But seeing he older Vizio Andriod tablet work (as well as laptops, phone, Roku, etc.) that is puzzling. I was hoping maybe I could alter a network setting on either Nexus 10 or the router but what is available, at least on non-rooted Nexus 10 is pretty limited. I'm resisting rooting the device, at least for a while. I really don't need to take on another projet right now.
depth ishonty
Followup: I chanbged the channel width from 20/40 to just 20. That bumped the download speed up to around 1.0 Mbps in a couple tests. Upload speed remains the same at around 3.5 Mbps. Also tried powering off the second Netis Wi-Fi unit with no change there. Also tried shifting channels a bit and no change. Tried an older Linksys Wireless G router/WiFi and saw 11.89 Mbps download with that Of course that was connected mode "g" and I am connected mode "n" with the Netis unit. More testing in order.
Solved - new firmware
I exchanged e-mail with the support folks at Netis. Very responsive. They sent me new firmware to try and that solved the problem. My Nexus 10 is now seeing download speeds well above 10 Mbps. The older Vizio Android device also sees much faster download speeds.
They placed the version I have out on their download page. Appears that there was an earlier version of what I now have out there, unknown if that would have taken care of it.
So it appears that the problem was something to do with firmware code in my Wi-Fi unit. It is working great now.

Nexus 4 ruins my home wi-fi !?

Every time i connect nexus 4 to my home wi-fi. Every other device gets terrible connection speed... Before nexus 4 my Nexus 7 had steady speeds up to 20mbps. With nexus 4 connected speeds go down to 5-3 mbps and even when i disconnect n4 from my home wi-fi router still acts really strange and i have to reboot it. Anybody experienced anything like that?

I have three desktop computers, an iPad, an iPod, a Roku unit, and two smartphones sharing the same wifi signal. My speeds don't seem to vary any regardless of the number of devices sharing it at any given time. I would have to call my service provider if I found myself in your situation.

Yep, same.
To the op, I'd say either reboot the router (which you probably have done) and / or see if there's a firmware update for the router.
If no cure, call your internet provider.
Ok.. Forgot to mentioned that n4 also loses wifi connection from time to time.
Seems like im not the only one.. People post similar problems.

I have seen this before. It happens in mixed networks (old B laptop used to crash the WiFi AP when G clients were also connected).
1) Check for a firmware update to your router. This is most likely where your issue is. The router speed should drop and increase as needed, but buggy firmware may only keep in last slowest speed until a reboot.
2) Mixed encryption (WPA & WPA2) is a nightmare Force "WPA2 only with AES only" -or- "WPA only with TKIP only". Some clients may try to use WPA with AES and this was what was crashing my AP at the time.
3) If you still have issues, try using "G&N" only, or even force G only. Some older G clients don't hear N traffic, so they just transmit on top of it.
4) Last resort, look for a used router that can run DD-WRT firmware. Personally, I will never go back to OEM router firmware.
Hope this helps...
i used Wi-Fi Analyzer and it showed 2 really strong signals on the same channel.. one being mine and the other someone's else. i manually changed it from 11 to channel 5 and everything back to normal/// 20mbps just like before!

Hi every one. I just got my N4 last week and i experiense the exact same thing!!!!
this is realy bad because every time i use the wireless network every body in the house starts complaining because my N4 shuts down all connections here.
It works alright with the main router wich is a thomson. but it fails with the other two routers (that are Belkin - N) that are only access points!
I realy want this fixed because not having internet at home is quite bad!

Painful Tether/Hotspot speed

Ive been trying to use tethering to my laptop and its to the point of unusable, im getting 56k speedsi if that while a speed test from my phone im getting 15-30 down and 2-10 up.
I'm using wifi hotspot ive tried both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I have also tried the USB Tether but my windows 10 doesnt like it for some reason. Im on verizon with a shared Data plan that includes the Hotspot feature. anyone have any ideas
Thanks
No idea, but I've tethered to a Windows 7 laptop. Performance was good, so I never bothered to check the speed.

I am having same issue. I use T-mobile and my OnePlusOne never had this issue. I would go to gym and just turn on my hotspot and watch Netflix without issue in the past. With the MXPE, it's like being on 56k modem. Anyone else having this issue?
I tether almost everyday due to terrible speeds at work. I'm on Verizon unlimited and I do not experience any speed issues. I unlocked but I made no changes for tether as that worked out of the box
I tried Bluetooth tethering which works fine without any issue so it's not exactly a carrier issue. I also verify with t-mobile that they didn't turn of my hotspot feature by accident.
I have the same issue on TMO US. With my Nexus 5, I had fast, dependable tethering. Now with the MXPE my tethering is painfully slow and flaky. Not good at all when on the road.
I'm having the same issue. I just upgraded from a Droid MAXX that had fantastic tethering speeds, and now on my new MXPE it's like being on dialup. Has anyone come up with a solution? I've been loving the phone so far, but tethering is too important to me and I won't be able to keep the phone if I can't figure it out.
I've had this happen twice. A reboot fixed it both times.
I've had this happen more than twice... Hoping the devs can come up with a fix

I'm on VZW ULDP and mine can be painfully slow at times as others have indicated. Usually a reboot will rectify it. But that's not really convenient. I have it set up to start tether automatically when I start my car (bluetooth connection activated via tasker) so I can automatically get traffic to work or home on my z ultra.

I had my first tethering session yesterday. I am on Verizon. A customer I was meeting with needed email access on his Surface Pro and there was no free WiFi where we met. I went in and setup a portable WiFi hotspot. We were both quite impressed with the speed. Keep in mind, this is the only time I have tried it but there were no issues.
hello i just got my moto x pure and i was trying to tether everything seems to be ok until i try use internet in my macbook and is not trasmitting data, same thing happened with nexus 6 i found that when lte it stops transfering data, this is so stupid this is an unlocked phone and it wont let me tether?????? wtf........im using simple mobile unlimited 4g LTE ,i was using an Asus ZenFone 2 and tether without issues, thanks.
This happens almost every time I use the hotspot. Rebooting usually fixes it - temporarily. I'm really hoping that marshmallow has better hotspot performance on the MXP
I get this issue... It's not exactly slow speeds, more like a spotty connection. I use Remote Desktop to do my work, which should still technically run smoothly (albeit slowly) on a 56k connection. I am connecting to a Windows NT server, so I am only using 16-bit graphics quality to reduce the strain on my bandwidth. We didn't even have anything that much faster than T1 at that time, so I can't imagine a Windows NT server running slowly on a modem connection. I noticed a couple things that were strange, so I think there may be settings on my phone causing it but I cannot be sure.
The connection fast when I test the tethering at home, but when I am out the connection constantly drops. I cannot even get a stable connection to my server to do any work. This is not when I am in the car moving from cell tower to cell tower, this is if I am at a place without WiFi, such as my dentist's office.
Chrome gets stuck at "Resolving host..." when trying to visit any websites. This would lead me to believe it is a DNS error, however this does not explain the connection instability with Remote Desktop, and using the address's IP address does not seem to fix this, strangely enough.
I am on a VZW grandfathered unlimited plan, using the TruPure ROM. I did not want to move away from stock, but I did it in an attempt to fix my tethering issues. So far nothing has worked.

Nexus Player Wifi

Hello, I own 2 nexus players, suddenly 2 days ago after working well, both started to develop slow wifi connections, streaming is nearly impossible, I downloaded a web browser for the device and opened a speed test page, the maximum speed registered is no more than 1.5 mbps while my internet connection is 10 mbps, all my other wireless devices get at least 9.8 mbps when tested the connection, strangely in the nexus playerthe speed increases a little more during the morning at the most to 3 mbps. I tried everything regarding the router, at first I used my dsl router wifi then I turned it of and started using my airport extreme, no changes in my nexus players, and getting full speed in my other devices, then I connected the nexus players to the airportextreme 5ghz wifi network, no change, I also tried to get the router closer to the nexus player, no change.
The last thing I tried is to share my mobile 4g connection to the nexus player which is about 25 mbps, I was standing next to the nexus player and the fastest speed it got was 1.5 mbps.
The problem occur in both nexus players, my other wireless devices get full wifi network speed, I dont know what else to do. Is this a common known issue?
How far away are they from the router? I have my router and NP #1 in the same room, and 5ghz signal is excellent. But the signal for NP #2 in the bedroom is lousy, so it uses the 2.4ghz band.
Maybe try using a wifi analyzer app to see what the best channels are for your router?
The router is at the most 15 feet from the nexus player. The strange thing is that both worked fine for about 3 months and suddenly at the same time they presented this problem. Could it maybe a firmware update? Mmmm When I shared my 4g connection I was three feet from the nexus player, I have no further ideas of what could be the problem. Neither google nor asus have responded my emails.

most likely a driver incompatibility issue that came with the latest update.
I assume this to be the case since I used to have wifi problems with the Nexus player in the past, which used to disconnect from my wifi sometimes, especially with my 5GHz wifi, to which it never managed to stay connected more than a few days in a row. And all of those problems are gone after the new update. So I assume that the changes fixed things for some people (like me) and broke things for others (like you). My speed from the Nexus Player is blazing fast as well, it maxes out my connection when performing a speed test.

If it is happend right after I have updated to 6.0 I will understand but three weeks later....
Somewhere I read that NP can be connected with wlan cabel using wlan adapter. If is it possible do you think it will solve the problem?

It should solve the problem. Also I've heard wlan cables come cheap these days on ebay.
Maybe a neighbor is now using a bad channel. See adjacent channel interference and co-channel interference.

Apparently my dsl modem blacklisted both nexus players, i don't know why, so the bandwidth for the two devices was limited. What i did was to reset the modem, problem solved temporarily, I already had to reseted it twice, as it blacklisted the np again. After doing that the speed in my nexus players is back to nearly 10 mbps again.
