Interesting read...nothing big. Bit wanted to share. Sorry if this should have gone into the alternates thread about the Much I5 and other Chinese gaming phones. Near design concept.
http://www.engadget.com/2014/08/17/78point-p01-much-w1-gaming-phone/?ncid=rss_truncated
they both look good and if the converstion rate is about right they should be about GBP 200 and about USD 325
I think i might get one. The Much i5 was actually a good product. I had one for a year, but it broke after somebody smashed it on the ground.
I'll probably buy it from a Chinese online store, and have a friend FedEx it over to me in the US.
The stores like willgoo always mark up the price a bit.

My only beefs so far are
- The size. Still way to big for me to consider practical (Another plus of a Flip design of Xperia Play)
- Lack of LTE radio. Once you are on LTE its hard to go back
Otherwise a great design from what I can tell. The other mentioned issues could be corrected with custom roms.
Probably not a buy for me but I hope they continue to iterate on the concept. AT LEAST SOMEONE is trying.
is it just me or are the 78point P01 and Much W1 literally EXACTLY the same phone with different brand stickers?

You certainly didn't read the article and just commented instead.
Funnily enough, both brands ended up sourcing their hardware from the same OEM, which is why 78point's P01 and Much's W1 are technically identical, with the exception of their Android 4.2 skins.

i did read it, but noticed the similarity between their appearance when i saw another article a few days later >.<
i know, i'm stupid ^^
anyways, thanks for pointing out the fact that they are the same.
that's really big. wouldn't even consider that as a real phone. talking on the joystick doesn't look pleasing at all.
xperia play still the best gamer phone despite its age.
The problem with these "gaming" phones and phablets is that the expectations are so high but the reality is very different. This will definitely not be powerful enough to satisfy a hardcore android gamer, such as most people with who currently have or have had an Xperia Play.
Until they move away from the MediaTek hardware they just cant justify that price for a device that can only flawlessly play emulated games. Don't get me wrong, I am an advocate of chinese gaming devices. I loved my Much i5, and I still have a JXD S7300B, but they just weren't powerful enough for what I needed, even the much anticipated S7800B which was also disappointing. I could only play Asphalt 8 on medium when I got my Much i5, but the game deserves all its visual glory. Most emulators work fine on the PLAY, so not really any need to upgrade. Since I got my shield I haven't really looked at these devices that much since, and with a Shield going for around £150 or so often on ebay, these phones need to be special. Now if the Xiaomi Mi3 (tegra 4) actually had gaming controls I would be all over that!!
I guess this thread can/should he merged with the other thread"Best alternatives so far!". When I posted this thread I must admit I was in a hurry and didn't take the the time like I should have to find that thread and post there. Although I like the look of the phones controls. It is a good size device. Guess if we are all looking for an alternative the nvidia shield would be a good choice. Even now my gaming setup since selling my play is my Nexus 5 and a Moga Hero. Although I love the N5 and the Moga Hero. It is not anywhere near as convenient at the Play is/was.
My xperia play got its flex broken for the second time (1 time screen also broke ) i ordered the new flex and i'm waiting for it to arrive...
I really love my xperia play but this flex issue has gotten me very sad and for the first time i'm seriously thinking about changing it... and to the moment i'm almost completely sure that it will be for this new Chinese phone.
I like the specs and the controls. Maybe a bit big but i think its just a matter of getting used to.
I believe this phone to be the first real xperia play alternative.
After i fix my xperia play again i will make my decision and if purchased either the 78point P01 or much w1. I will be informing this beloved sanctuary of information about my experience in this sad xperia play alternative replacement :silly:
Definitely looks great. 1.7ghz and 2 gb ram not bad on specs

I am interested too but doing a quick search on Google says it may never be released in UK.
Anyway I wish there was some sort of review from somebody. I would like to know how it performs.

Most Chinese sellers offer free shipping to anywhere so that's not a problem.
The problem is no guarantee.. but anyway that's how i bought my xperia play from eBay so that's not much of a problem its more a luck factor
About the review yea its best to wait a little bit and also wait for it to get a little cheaper (would be good) lol
Does anyone own it yet? Might like tp see it perform what cpu does it have

It says mediatek octo(8)core on the Chinese site
Deenox will probably have one soon. He does very comprehensive reviews on all chinese devices
I know that the two phones have the same guts. But i am interested in the different layouts of their respective android skins. I have used both Much i5 and the JXD 7300C. And the Much device implemented the system abd UI better, but still left out a joystick driver. They also were better with updates, but all the info about them was chinese only.
I have no idea about this 78point company though. Wonder if the UI will be the same as the MUCH system, and if they have a joystick driver that can be read or implemented easily into games.
I plan on buying one in November. Hopefully Deen0X gets one before i do.
My i5 was still one of my favourite devices that I have owned. I loved the UI, the fact that it was different yet felt polished still. And using the inbuilt mapper I had no issues with any games whatsoever, so the makers of the Much devices (ireadygo? MagicMedia?) have my vote definitely.
Have put in my order for the 78p01 on aliexpress.com it should be arriving in the coming weeks. Excited.

you are right. he posted it in the wrong forum. but i think he posted it here for a reason. we are pissed. and Sony is doing it right. if that company which is bigger than motorolla, can understand, why moto cant ?
here's the part that i don't get. Yes it's annoying that moto is so locked down, but it's not like it was any surprise to anyone. They have a history of it, a well known history. They've been working on the droid X since it came out, with about no success, and yet everyone that bought the atrix is screaming about how it should be broken. My question is, if you really wanted a hackable phone, why did you choose this one? You could have gone with something else, even if that meant waiting for other phones to come to AT&T. i believe at&t is launching something like 22+ phones this year?

I think that some people bought the phone because Motorola said that they would provide a solution that allowed developers to access the phone (these people are the "Good Faith" purchasers). I believe that Motorola said it first on their YouTube account (after the Motorola employee responsible for replying to comments there said basically what you said above but with fewer words and in a rather rude tone) and then again on their support forums where they said that they hoped to have a solution in place before the 30-day AT&T return policy expired. Motorola may also have said something similar on their Facebook page but I'm not sure.
Other people bought the phone because they didn't understand that Motorola's encrypted bootloaders have never been broken. They are the ones that say stuff like "everything's hackable", which may actually be true but is meaningless in reality unless you also include a timeframe and I don't think that most people want to wait ten trillion years for a brute force crack of a bootloader.
I, on the other hand, decided to wait and see what Motorola would do before making a purchase and so far it's not looking good but I am still hopeful.

I guess I should add another group of people: Those who didn't understand that getting root was not the same as cracking the bootloader but heard that devs had root even before the phone was released.

this . exactly this. when Moto said they will give some access to devs. i thought they are going the HTC way and not Sony way.
now HTC went Moto Way and Sony went the HTC way.
i mean, how stupid can these companies be ? seriously ? sony released the Xperia X10. a beauitiful device and early in UK. people didnt buy it because it was locked. Sony learned from their mistake. new phones? open for you to play with.
HTC ? thery were doing fine. alot of sales. nice devices. they saw Sony failing because of their locked ****. they saw Motorolla devices are not selling very high after they locked them down " thus, sales of new the devices is much less than the droid 1 " as far as i know " i dont have data "
how hard is it to understand when a phone has no community, its a DOA phone ?

i did. my only concern is about the screen brightness, from the videos i have seen its fine. i know its not a powerful device like tegra 2. but i am in for the gaming since i am gamer " speaking of which. i know its OT but how is the 3DS ? pass till NGP ?"
i think PS emulator and N64/SNES/GEn Emulators will be amazing on this phone and i will be finally able to have all the old classics on one system + whatever new games comes out will be fine as well.
looking at tegra zone specific games, i dont have much hope to get alot of games on it. and that difference in the games isnt even big at all.
plus the phone looks sexy as hell with its curves. and the screen is really pretty. i know its an LCD but for some reason sony screens look much better than a normal LCD screen, " and if the xperia play is SLCD, then i am happy panda "

I'd wait for the NGP, mostly because of a personal distaste for the screen tech of the 3DS.
As for the Play, I'd be concerned about a lot more than just the dim display. Battery life, an outdated processor, and RAM specs that aren't even really in line with last-gen tech all make it seem like one would be better off buying a more future-ready phone that's compatible with the Android Playstation games. Especially if bought on contract -- in 2 years the Play will be 4 years outdated. I was really looking forward to a solid gaming phone, but this just doesn't seem to be it. Now by no means am I saying the Atrix is the better gaming alternative...only that the Play has some seemingly unsurpassable issues that dedicated gaming controls can't make up for. Then again...until the phone actually comes out, who knows?

Now that Sony Ericsson has taken a leap forward which really is a surprise considering that they have taken a tough stance on unlocking anything. This would put more pressure to Motorola if they need to get a bigger piece of the pie. For sure Motorola is surprised that Sony Ericsson took a different path.
After all, it does make sense that if you have a great piece of hardware and you let the community take a hold of it, word will spread and more consumers will take a note and purchase it.
Guaranteed that ATnT is probably disappointed with some consumers returning their Atrix. I also doubt Bell Canada is breaking open the champagne here when across the store there are more ppl lining up for the iPAD2 than for the Atrix.
The ball is in Motorola's court. Time for them to make a move and less replying on facebook.
Just sharing. As of late I feel that Sony's phones seem way behind the competition. But by the looks of things this phone looks nice and seems to have some power behind it....

I get the bad feeling that this will be one of those silly US only phones >_<
Sony dropped the ball long ago. The play is my last Sony phone. There's just so much better options now a days.
Support for the play didn't even last 1 year, my money is to important to throw it at a company who isn't in for the long run.
Buying into Sony these days is like buying into rim. A costly error when you can do so much better.
I hate to say it but this is a throw away market, problem is some companies treat there customers the same way.
why sony didn't give us ics:
it is not for touchpad support as they already got that fixed.
it is about the gaming performance.
i have contact with a sony dev and he said: game developers wouldn't update the games with touchpad support for ics, because they don't earn enough money from xperia play users. as i completely undertstand that because this is a game phone.
now people says: why doesn't give sony us something else as compromise? they do! they are helping the freexperia group with fixing things and they see what they can do else (with fxp) for ous
If we ever get Jellybean for our "Play" and gaming comes back... then can we question Sony for their lack of support?? I agree that it is not just about the gamepads and that ICS isnt as smooth as GB was for gaming, but now what do Xperia Play owners do? We must stay with GB basically outdating our phones(by far). I know its not all Sonys fault but we lose more then them seeing how we paid for our phone. Jellybean=working games & touchpads....what do you think?

i cant really unterstand what people have against the play. mine runs very smooth with custom rom. Gaming is good(i mostly care for emulators) and the overall expirience is good. My girlfriend got a S2(as i did 1 year ago) and i dont want to trade. I just love the gamepad.
The camera is not that good and the ram could be more but thats the only complain i do have now...

I don't think people dislike the play. But are grumpy because it kinda flopped in the market. And there's multiple things that caused it too.
But that's what xda is for, to make the best of it. And yes I like it for the game pad, the phone itself may only be middle of performance vs other Android phones but whatever.
Wow, definitely considering this device now, If its announced at IFA the Xperia s will ultimately be dumped as the flag ship.

First, the iPega: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ipega-android-gaming-tablet-launching-in-may-video-18-04-2013/
Then the IbenX: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/ibenx-gamepad-android-gaming-tablet-unveiled-15-04-2013/
I think the iPega would be better, with a very nice gamepad, and more portable. I think it would need a quad core processor to beat the IbenX and the upcoming Wikipad. Thoughts?
I like the ibenx better though id never buy either. The Ipega looks like it has a smaller screen and I don't like the awkward shape of it. But I wouldn't replace my play with either of those. Though I would if they made a phone like the party but with analog sticks like the vita instead of touch pads. It seems like these gaming tablets are popping up all over the place noire we just need to find the best one

Just wanted everyone to know that some videos were posted of the JXD s7800A (the weaker one), and it looks so freaking awesome. It seems to handle everything very well, and this is the weaker model. The device also goes portrait view no problem, which is totally sweet. Check this forum post http://boards.dingoonity.org/jxd-devices/jxd-s7800-quad-core-will-be-released!/ to see some vids of emulation, the unboxing, and some nice photos of the device. Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I will be taking a look at it.
The thing about the Xperia Play, is that it could switch from phone to PSP in a matter of seconds. These "Alternatives" are just android devices that were made for gaming, but do you really see yourself having a conversation with one of these things?

Yeah. The killer feature in the XP for me is that, when you hide the gamepad it's a smartphone like any other.
I don't see myself with a gamepad or handheld console style device as smartphone.
Some company should make something similar to the XP. I can't understand why there's nothing similar with so many Android devices released around the world and even an increasing number of Android gaming devices.

Couldn't agree more. xplay has been my one and only phone/gaming device. I could never see myself playing games using a touch screen. It's downright stupid. With all these andoird gaming devices I just cant see why none of em has tried to make a phone/gaming hybrid like the xplay.
While these i5 MUCH and JXD devices may be a great handheld consoles, they are in no way an Xperia Play replacement. What makes Xperia Play cool and unique is that it looks like a slick, profesional phone you can use in the adult world without no one guessing it's also a great handheld console. This is the defining point and "an Xperia Play alternative" MUST have this feature. To anyone past high school it would look extremely stupid trying to have a public conversation holding these things.
So far, the Bladepad is the only legit replacement i've seen so far. The downside is you need to own an iPhone and I refuse to buy one. There is the small posibility they would release Bladepads for the most famous Android phones, so in a perfect scenareo I could buy a Galaxy 3 or 4 (whichever has better battery durability) and a Bladepad. But i've been waiting for ages and no news, so I guess I will need to buy a Xperia Play since for some reason no one is capitalizing on the slide-gamepad+phone thing. I only want to play old dos classics like Duke, Doom, and snes/gb emulations and thats it. The most hardware demanding game I like is the Carmageddon one, so I dont really need much extra power than what the Xperia Play has. It also has good battery life which is very important when gaming.
Yes I would love an Xperia Play 2 but im tired of waiting and it's just not happening, and no one wants to release a slide-gamepad+phone so there's no other option so I need to buy one asap to satisfy my gaming needs.
You guys think this is a legit Xperia Play new in box?

You're stating your opinion as fact. I do not care if you or anyone else thinks I'd look "stupid" using a JXD or i5 Much in public. I do not own either of those phones, I use Nexus devices, but those who do own those devices surely enjoy their phones.
You say that you don't care to play new games that are coming out, and there's nothing wrong with that, but most people do care about playing the latest games. The Xperia Play doesn't have the specs needed to enjoy many of the latest titles, and people are moving on because they care about gaming.

I agree. I own the Much I5 and enjoy it very much. yes it would be nice to hide the controls for convenience, but not because i think people judge me. 75% of the people that see me using it think that its awesome and want to know more about it and the other 25% don't care and go on with their own business. The Xperia Play is a gaming phone with physical controls this means anything can be its alternative as long as it have has those things.
PS: I can't wait for the release of the next Xperia Play but till then these alternatives will have to do.

Even if Sony doesn't make it i'm just talking about in general a major flagship company. Such as samsung, LG, Moterola, .....etc.
I wouldn't trade my xperia play for any phone.
It seems you're like me, playing mostly old games with emulator (tbh I think most android games are total crap except oldies remake).
The xperia play is just perfect for that, it doesn't need an upgrade, yet.
Maybe for the smartphone part, but it's just fine with it for the gaming part.
The day they release a PS2 emulator for android with more hardware requirement that'll be a different story though.

I have no words to describe how amazing that would be. Even right now thinking about it makes my heart pump.
Quick question to every one if they had a ps2 emulator that ran flawlessly right now, what would be you first game to play on it. For me it would be Jak and Daxter.

isn't this a bit cheaper.. even this is high for this phone nw.. but still.

I have to agree that there is no real alternative yet to Xperia Play with regards to the hidden keypad. But as a gaming phone, I guess the JXD and iMuch are close enough... gameplay wise. So it really falls onto the user if he wants to buy a device that's obviously aimed at gaming. I'm honestly torn about it since the phones are made and designed in China and may have suspect quality in terms of hardware and software. So I don't know, I'll probably wait for good custom roms or better support from the companies before actually buying one. I still use my Xperia Play as an MP3 player and a gaming device on the go but my Galaxy Note 10.1 is my current cellphone. Now if Nintendo made a 3DS that's also a cellphone, then my life would be so complete.
Like I said, the iMuch and JXD devices are great devices, but they aren't Xperia Play alternatives because for this, at least IMO they lack the defining feature of a perfectly stealth console in a phone. If I was in a business reunion and I got I a call and went like "excuse me, I have a call" and popped out a PSP into my ear and started talking people would think I must be ****ing kidding.
So having said that, can anyone tell me if the link I posted is a legit new Xperia Play? I dont want to buy the wrong one. Also, should i be expecting that price? It seems ovepriced to me.
Can't believe they're still selling Xperia Play and new.
Haven't Sony stopped producing it ?

sorry bro.. really don't know about ebay much.. but some comparison for your help below.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004N861MG/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
its amazon.. so for sure its legit.
I refuse to live in a world where the only way to enjoy gaming with an Android device in public is by owning and old ass Xperia Play.
There are 0 alternatives to the Xperia Play.
All these pads that you have to carry in your pocket and attach/deattach look goofy as f*ck and are annoying.
The new Snail W3D is HUGE and I don't want something that looks like a handheld console anyway. When im on a meeting with middle aged men at an office I can't pop out MUH GAMING CONSOLE.
Carrying an actual handheld console in 2015 along with your normal smartphone... LOL.
This is why, for me, the Xperia Play was perfect. You want to play: you slide the gamepad out and enjoy some great ms-dos/old school emulation gaming. When you are done, slide in and it looks like a regular phone. THATS the only option. I need that. I CANT enjoy modern games, I don't care about them, and I can't enjoy old games with touchscreen controls. How in the f*ck im supossed to strafe and shoot at the same time in Doom? Jesus christ, they ruined everything. If only stupid Sony wouldn't held the stupid patent, we could have had something similar to the Bladepad or the Razer Junglecat for the main Android phones, but meanwhile, unless you want to buy an iCrap, you are stuck with the Xperia Play which is a slow POS nowadays.
Im only asuming that's the reason, because I refuse to believe no one has thought about releasing a sliding gamepad EVER for any Android phone.
This is my rant after years of waiting for something.
Brother. I know your pain. You have said what I've been thinking for a REALLY long time. Respect.
Dukedoom - i think just like You. But there are no choise in the world. Really. Only Xperia Play up to today have a gamepad. A real gamepad and it's a real phone. I think that we never get another phone with gamepad simmilar to ours Xperia Play. It's really sad.
I bought a gamepad for my s4. It's easy to connect and to mount. But it's still another device with another battery and another thing to carry. Like Ngage long time ago - xperia play had small group of fans. But thoese fans are loyal as hell.
You guys definitely aren't alone on this one. I'm getting tired of the Play's lack of power. If I run the stock rom all the emulators run smoothly but I get shafted in the apps department. If I upgrade to 4.x then I can run modern apps but the emulators are sluggish. I'm also on a R800X so my rom options are limited as well. There is still a demand for a device like the Play but everybody is too stupid to make it. I can't find anything like it even if I look at Chinese imports and they practically invented handheld game consoles that use emulators!
I feel the pain however the play sold **** all so no one even wants to make no. 2 much w3d it's your best option at the moment. If we could get more interest in the devices to accumulate than maybe Sony would make another but for that to happen the vita must die lol. Sure would be cool if you could just slap a new cpu in and recode some software but that's not how it works. The play could run newer os but you need a really good developer to optimise. Much w3d is gigantic which sucks I'll be buying one right now they are on pre order though and I never pre order anything.

I agree with the sentiment here. I have been waiting for a proper sucessor (slidedepad) for a long time.
Unfortunately the Xperia Play was sold in a moment where mobile gaming was still in its infancy, and phones weren't the little powerhouses of today. If it was released today, we would have a very potent quadcore with at least 2gb ram, HDMI out (or at least a dock for that) and possibly remastered PSP games made for it, which would certainly drive more sales. That, and having actual analogs instead of touchpads (like the PSP Go) would really help make it sell like hotcakes, possibly paving the way for an Xplay 2 and more.

That was the other problem with the play everyone thought Sony was going to release tons of games but we only got 13 ps1 classics then Sony never released any more. Definitely did not help sales

Well i upgraded my phone and just use a keychain controller. It's not as good as the xperia play, but that's a nice alternative.
I own an Impulse controller :
http://www.impulsecontroller.com/
And i ordered a cheaper clone for my gf, friends and brother (back then got it for 4€ each) :
http://www.dx.com/fr/p/multi-functi...hutter-w-wireless-mouse-function-black-370723
Quick review : Well, that's a nice piece of hardware, but you lack L/R/Start/Select (well just use the virtual controller on screen for those and that's ok). The cross is not really precise, don't expect to play fighting game with that (Hadoken are tricky), but that's ok for most of games.
Edit : It seems there is a new challenger :

Did someone try this one ? Seems to me like a cheap alternative.

This was the closest we ever got to getting a replacement:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3uKuZq7yBM&t=2m00s
Unfortunately the kickstarter got cancelled, the project never shipped.
Someone get to work and make one of these. I don't care about the keyboard, I just want the cross, joystick and buttons, make it simple with that swivel rotating mechanism to hide it and add in L/R top buttons.

That looks like the Open Pandora handhelds controller scheme:

FYI, I am deeply considering buying another Xperia PLAY. I moved onto a Nexus 5 almost a 18 months ago and I am definately eyeballing the Snail W3D, but I do miss the PLAY for what it could bring in emulator wise. If I do snag one it will be white this time, always had the black models.

Last summer.... I picked up a R800x off of ebay for $25 with Free Shipping. I was really surprised how good of shape it was in.... I would say an 8 out of 10. I only use it for gaming because I have a note 3 as my daily driver. But I'm loving it for emulators... definitely worth the small amount I paid for it. Maybe you could pick one up cheap too on eBay if you keep your eyes peeled .

The white look is nice and there's definitely a lot more development for the R800i variant than the R800x. It looks like a nice phone. I only got a R800x because a friend of mine had one and I was teaming up with him to help him root it and unlock the bootloader (This is the only Sony phone I've ever bought and I was totally unfamiliar with Flashtool, ftf's, etc... ).
It would be good to have you back on here with an Xperia Play in hand .... when I was learning to root and Rom this phone, I found a lot of your older posts to be really helpful.

I am glad to hear that my posts have been helpful here. I am going to get a PLAY within a month or so, but I will snag one. The Nexus would stil be my main daily driver and I would be buying the PLAY as a gaming device only. But it would be nice to be back here on this thread with a PLAY in hand. Despite moving on to the N5 forum I still check this forum almost daily despite not having the phone anymore, simply because this forum felt like a small group of friends and I spent so much time on this forum thast I simply could not go without still seeing what was going on. Looking forward to getting another PLAY. I am glad that my past posts were helpful, look forward to being back on here soon. I will keep ya'll posted.
I wouldnt be able to get a Xperia Play at this point. I have a LG P970 which pretty much has the same hardware as the Xperia Play and I cant wait to upgrade it to a Samsung S5 Mini, the phone is bloated as **** and browsing of the internet is not smooth.

Agree with all the sentiments here. Despite the varied Android ecosystem, nobody including Sony wants to bite. The Xperia Play was ergonomically perfect, but no doubt it would have been the usual paranoia and cross product in fighting that killed it before it had a chance based on some really stupid decisions regarding the specs. Such a shame and depressing state of affairs how close we got to the perfect gamer phone.
i still use the play for emulators and legendary games like bruce lee, fifa 12, and star battalion.
you know what's close for me? i've been using the xperia ZL for a year now and 5.0 HD screen w/quad core on a 4.4 kitkat and 4glte with the OEM option to sync my ps3 controller.
i have all my xperia play games on this device and having to play it on a sony phone w/my ps3 controller without any lag is just as cool for me. i'm a sony fanboi and having the xperia lounge, playstation mobile, walkman player still reminds me of my play without the convenience of the controller slide out.
with the sync, i just turn on the ps3 controller and connects with my newer xperia. it's not completely the same but it feels close.
Guys , what do you think if we find someone how can make a modern Xperia play alternative at kickstarter.com ??
or we can email Sony or do something , so they can made an Xperia play 2 ...
