[Q] Need help with root and best route to update - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello all, I rooted my wife's phone when it first came out and told her not to take any updates.
Well She's still on 4.2.2, software/baseband L720VPUAMDL and want to know what is the best route to get her updated to the latest while staying rooted?
Im not to used to Samsungs and its been a while since I attacked anything samsung related and am currently searching to get me familiarized again. :good:

Best way is back everything up, Odin the NAE .tar file, let the phone take the NG2 OTA, then reroot and restore.

Would I need to unroot first or can I simply run the latest update?

You would have to unroot in order to accept an OTA update. And if you have removed any bloatware, it will still probably fail unfortunately.

ok thank you. now to find the files and see if the drivers are still installed.
There are no issues rooting the latest update correct?

You can go to sammobile.com to get the NAE firmware.
The only method that doesn't work to root the latest version (NG2) is Towelroot. The other methods still work.

Don't download the NAE tar from samobile, the speeds are horrible. Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663619

[Q] S4 Restore to original MDL version or how to install Fixed Kernel via CWM

Help needed!
Tried to root my Sprint SPH-L720 MDL version (really need to be able to use it as HotSpot like I was using my previous phone) and having issues with getting root access as Sprint has added a SetUID restriction on the kernel with the latest update.
But most important, Good Enterprise stopped working as it detected that phone is rooted or partially rooted (as Titanium Backup gives me a message that it was able to acquire Root Privs – but its UI never opens up). Not having Good Enterprise is not an option for me.
So, decided to go back to Original as seen posts with instructions (these were key for me to move forward with rooting) that it is easy to do, however only know realized that all these ports are using MDC version of Firmware and I could not find Official Firmware for MDL version. Only MDC version available. Ouch!
Question #1: Anyone knows if MDL version of Original Firmware even exists and if yes where to download it? Or should I just use MDC version? Would it work?
If recovery is not available, I could pass this phone to one of my kids but I will need to fix root. To fix root I need to flash new MDL kernel using ODIN & CWM recovery. I have Fixed MDL Kernel, but I could not find instructions on how to flash it.
Question #2: Anyone could point me to the instructions on how to flash Kernel using ODIN and CWM Recovery?
Thank you In advance!
only way right now is to flash mdc and then take the ota.
for some reason Samsung has not released the mdl yet.
kernels you flash in recovery like a rom just read the install instruction in any kernel thread.
there is also an unroot script posted in dev you might try.
for rooting did you odin cf auto root? pretty hard not to root that way.

Upgrading from MJA to latest(NG2?)

Hello,
I have a MJA rom (with TRWP) and rooted. I never updated it in past, but i want to upgrade now.
I understand, we need to have stock recovery to flash the new updates. I searched a lot and couldnt find it. Could someone please help me out with this?..
I dont have any issues with KNOX .. etc
Just need safe route to upgrade to new version on my s4(and root it back).
thanks!!:good:
You first need to upgrade your phone to NAE via Odin to return your phone to an unaltered stock condition. You can get the tar file from random45's thread in the android development section. You will not lose data with the update, but I do recommend you use Odin 3.07 or 3.09. After you are updated to NAE you will have to goto settings menu and select samsung software updates to check if NG2 is available for download. After you update you can then use cfautoroot or towel root to reroot your phone. If your rooting to use the hotspot hack, just upgrade to NAE, since there isn't a hack for NG2 yet.

Thankyou for the detailed post. I was finally able to update without any serious issues.
1) flashed NAE through odin. No issues, no errors. successful flash.
2) downloaded ng2 update.zip from here and tried installing it from recovery. Errored out. (dont remember the exact error)
3) went back to recovery -- factory reset, wipe cache, restart and try update.zip . same error.
4) started up phone and checking if all is ok, saw the baseband still showed MJA while software showed NAE.
5) Odin'ed the modem/firmware of NAE.
6) checked the status and it showed upgraded baseband.
7) I then went to recovery and retried NG2 update.zip again & updated successfully.
8) rooted with CF auto & restored apps and data from titanium.

[Q] NG2 Update, Camera App & Hotspot Mod

Hello, I´m on stock rooted NAE. Two days ago I received the NG2 update via OTA. I thought this was weird because you´re not supposed to get updates via OTA if you are rooted. Anyway, today I tried to install the update and I got an error during the installation. My phone got restarted and I´m apparently still rooted.
So I have a couple questions...
1) Why did I get the OTA update if I´m rooted?
2) How do you install the NG2 update on a rooted device? I guess you have to run the NG2 tar file via ODIN and then, use the Chainfire root method. Am I right?
3) Does anyone have the mod camera app? I would love to have it.
4) How do I get free hotspot functionality on the NG2 rooted device?
Thank you so much! Any help will be appreciated.

1. If your stock you will always get a firmware update. Unless on another custom rom ex. Aosp.
2. You are correct sir.

I was also NAE rooted and got the OTA NG2 update... I think even rooted devices can downloaded the OTA update... BUT... The rooted or custom ROM or recovery couldn't install this update.
So the update can be downloaded but not installed.
So I pulled the OTA update and returned to the stock status and installed the update normally.

Phone needs to be completely stock before you can run the update. The new plans offer HOTSPOT for free. This will be included in your monthly plan at no extra cost.

Galaxy S4 How to unroot?

I rooted my AT&T Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1 using kingroot and it worked great. I proceeded to try to install a custom ROM, which failed and I never even overwrote the stock ROM. So I am currently using the stock ROM. I recently got an update from AT&T for the stagefright patch, but every time I try to install the update, it puts the device into a secure boot download screen. I have to reboot the device to get back to Android. I also tried factory reset but it also causes the secure download screen to show up. I want to trade in to upgrade soon and I need to know how to fix this. Thanks!
Ok, if you want to get the stagefright patch and still be rooted, follow directions here with the stock rooted rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814
After the flash, don't install or flash anything else, update with the OTA from AT&T. If you want to remove the custom padlock nag, use triangle away from play store.
If you just want to get it completely stock, Odin to stock NB1 by following directions in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
You can take the OTA updates after that but only one every 24 hours. It'll update from NB1 to NJ4 first. Not sure how many updates get you to OC4 4.
Snapping along on stock rooted 0C4 I337, wishing for some good up to date lollipop ROM's to throw into flashfire
Thank You!

Thank You so much! I was having a hard time finding a solution! I appreciate it very much!

rooted - trying take OTA lollipop dont care about keeping root

i was able to take part one of the update which i think did something to Root....when I open SuperSU it says cant install binary, may need to re-root. I don't want root anymore. I tried second OTA update and fails.
I'm guessing i just have to odin flash a stock img?...my question is, can i do the lollipop one? or do i have to do kitkat and just take the OTA? also, does it matter which version of kitkat or lollipop?
thanks!
download the latest stock rom from somewhere, and flash with odin or flashfire. That should be all you need to do.
thanks...just flashed one of the lollipops and worked great! didnt have to even kept data and custom went away!
