Hi,
I rooted using towel root and then downloaded supersu from the Play Store. I opened supersu, which first asked if I wanted to disable Knox. I elected to disable Knox.
Afterwards, a prompt popped up asking if I wanted to update the binaries. I elected to update the binaries, but the update failed.
I decided to uninstall supersu and reinstall. After reinstall, the binaries updated, but the prompt re: whether to disable Knox did not come up again.
I wanted to check the Knox counter, so I entered download mode. However, there was no reference to Knox counter where I used to see as in my old s3.
My questions are:
1. Since I disabled Knox on the first install, did it remain disabled after uninstalling and reinstalling (there was no prompt to disable Knox after the reinstall)
2. How do I check the Knox counter?
Thanks in advance!
KNOX refers to a few things. There is the software component and the hardware component.
Most custom ROMs have KNOX software removed, along with Carrier IQ stuff if your carrier pre-installs that.
The hardware side, is a warranty indicator. See attached picture (it's similar for G900 phones). If you are 0x1 your KNOX warranty is supposedly void, and cannot be reset. There will also be a number in parentheses like (1) or (2), that is the counter. The hardware part of KNOX can NOT be reset at this time, and probably never will be.
If you want more information, look it up on Google or use the XDA search feature, as KNOX has been discussed endless amounts of times already.

So the KNOX flag can normally be checked while in download mode, yes? How to get into download mode?
Sorry if the question seems noob.

Or install Phone Info from Play to see the KNOX warranty void status, download mode is volume down + menu + power button.
Thanks gee2012! I think you mean: Volume Down + Home + Power Button?
And press volume up at the prompt.
I hope that's right

I installed Knox also, and uninstalled it later without any problem.
Just log in in Knox, hit the menu button and hit uninstall.
It will uninstall Knox with every program installed with it.

I don't think so.
I gess it's two different things, the Knox app, and besides that the safety settings in the firmware Samsung made.
Even if you don't install Knox, your Knox counter will raise if you Root your phone or if you Flash it.

You might need to uncheck Knox under settings>general>security>device administrators before you can uninstall it.
I think this will only remove the interface to Knox though, as I believe the implementation is very low level.

It wont let me do this. You can "uninstall" Knox and get it back to how it was before setup (knox partition removed, back to having to install it again to re-knox), but you cannot AFAICT uninstall it completely, because its setup as a device administrator. You also cannot stop it being a device admin, even if its unticked, application manager wont uninstall as its device admin.
I wouldnt mind, but the knox process (as shown by CPU timelines pro) uses 10% of CPU power 24/7, which seems a bit naff when im not even using it. Im unsure if thats 10% of the current CPU speed (which might be virtually sleeping), or 10% max...
g
yes, you can uninstall knox
Knox is a security feature which Samsung has created for Android versions 4.3 onwards,
It is a very clever mechanism, by which Samsung are hoping to grab the Mobile Device Management market from blackberry. As businesses are trying to get used to the Bring Your Own Device world we live in, there has increasingly been a call for device management, i.e that a business i.t administrator can control the data-flow and policy of all devices.
Knox, installs as a container, it is basically a second phone, with separate media, homescreens, email, apps etc, so that on your personal phone you can have a secure section for work or private matters.
It is optional to install, and to uninstall you have to go into Knox itself, hit menu, settings, about knox, uninstall.
enjoy.
If I don't install knox (dont have my phone yet) then I still get flagged when I root? Or do you only get flagged when knox is installed?

You will get the Knox 0x1 flag if you don't use a save way to root the phone. It doesn't matter if you activate the Knox feature.
I updated my phone today and I was able to root it an disable KNOX.
I used CF-Autoroot http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ and it worked flawlessly and when I was updating the binary I got the option to disable KNOX.
Root Instruction:
1. Flash with Odin
2. Add a google account incase it has not been setup yet.
3. Install SuperSU from Market.
4. Open it and it wil ask you to update binary.
Respect to the developer.
Futhermore, I got CWM with one of the methods I was using when on JB 4.1.2
PLS NOTE: You will lose warranty if phone is rooted at this time. If you will like to keep your warranty with no possibility to go back to an older android version, please AVOID rooting your ROM and wait for custom ROM with KNOX disabled
Cheers,
But.. I don't know whether to use the i9305 or I9305T files :/
My device is I9305T but has been running I9305 FW (and probably bootloaders) for a while...
For those who need some more links/instructions:
Backup your data, SMS, settings - and make sure you got an IMEI backup
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
If you use Google's 2-Step Verification, make sure you can receive the SMS via a 2nd phone or have a backup option like landline or authenticator app.
I removed my SD card (just in case) and did a full system wipe just to get rid of everything I did to my system over the last year:
Hold down volume up, home and power buttons, when screen turns on, leave these buttons, do the full system wipe. (Don't think this is really necessary though.)
Install 4.3 on your i9305
http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/install-android-4-3-update-galaxy-s3-lte-i9305/
Switch the phone off after first book (at SIM PIN prompt).
Get CF-Auto-Root and install it
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Now after your phone booted you can run the Samsung setup. Add your Google account.
Install SuperSU from the Play Store - not SuperUser
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en
Update the binary and disable KNOX
Enjoy
For me what worked, was installing PhilZ Touch (latest version), and using the built-in rooting function of the recovery. Then, installing SuperSU gave me perfect root.
Does anyone know if Koush's superuser app works in any way in this release? I would prefer to use an open-source superuser app.

Uh. I think, at this point, that the best thing (for me) is to not update.
Update using Heimdall, and skip flashing tz.img and sboot.bin. Be aware that this will break WiFi until a custom kernel is released

But I think it would be kind of you to edit the OP to say in a very visible way that someone doing that looses his warranty with no possibility to go back at this time (until a solution is found, but no one knows if this will ever be the case ...) because of the new Knox bootloader and the new Knox warranty void flag.

Thanks mate for clarifying the issue of Knox flag and warranty. I will wait for a dev to make Knox-free rom.
if you'd like to have 4.3 stock rom with root and warranty, you can update your phone to 4.3 using Mobile Odin PRO latest version (3.85). Let's say you're on 4.1.2, just download 4.3 for your phone, move it to phone storage, flash it using Mobile Odin PRO with EverRoot and Inject Mobile Odin features. This way you'll have a 4.3 rooted in warranty.

I think I've read that Mobile Odin isn't able to flash the bootloader. If this is really the case then it is true (old bootloader = no Knox flag). Note that you will also need to flash a custom kernel cause stock 4.3 kernel without Knox bootloader breaks wifi.

What about triangle away? (Or downgrading to a earlier stock Knox free ROM and than triangleing away?)
Hello all,
First post here, and this question is what literally made me sign up.
So when root for the VZW Note 3 came out naturally i was one to jump right aboard for titanium backup. Well one thing led to another and details are not important but just reflashed the stock J7 image and one power cycle later i noticed that my KNOX was gone. By this i mean that the boot screen that says Galaxy Note 3, used to have the Custom and unlocked at the bottom of it, but since reflashing with stock is gone.
biggest question is, is this for real, or could verizon in theory see data that we can not and notice that is was at one time tripped.
I know i had read things in the past that once that KNOX Counter is tripped its your new forever friend.. anyone else had anything like this happen??
Thanks for being a great website and keep up the great work!
I dont believe if it is stock that there is any sort of lock on the boot screen

Knox sees bootloader, kernel, and recovery. If you flash any of those, the phone wont boot and it will trip knox. Safestrap bypasses knox because it doesnt replace the recovery and it doesnt flash kernels. The "custom unlocked" icon was saying that the software on your device isnt stock, but this doesnt necessarily mean that knox was tripped. I have a custom rom on my phone with no custom unlocked on mine.
i hadnt used anything like Safestrap, all i did was flash the image that came out allowing root with odin way back when... and i noticed i had the custom unlocked icon.
i guess the way i understood is once that is on the boot screen the knox counter was tripped, if that is not the case im a very happy person.
i was doing all this looking around when KNOX was first found out about i believe. I may have to research again and see what the findings are about KNOX
Thanks for the explanations!
Just rooting it can cause the lock on boot but it does not trip knox. I am stock rooted. Installed Triangle Away to effectively hide the lock on boot. However when you dig deep into about phone it will show as custom. Again - my knox is all good.
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Your phone booting and showing "Custom" under Samsung boot logo is unrelated to Knox. It means custom firmware/modification (rooted most likely). FYI, this was not when Knox was "discovered", knox was out on the Galaxy S4 a year ago....6 months before Note 3 was even announced. Maybe you meant something different.... However, Knox status is determined as shiftr said before, and to see the actual Knox warranty status, power down your phone, and then press and hold volume-down, home-button, and power button all at the same time. Then when the warning screen pops up, press volume up to continue. This will put you into Odin Mode (or Download Mode). What you're looking for here is where is says "Knox Warranty Void: ...." If your status is 0x1 then you have tripped knox and voided your warranty permanently. If it says 0x0 then you're still in the clear. That "custom" logo you saw during boot will also show as "custom" up above here under "system status" as well. However, when you do a full Odin back to stock image, you will set that status back to "Official". It will usually still show custom on the first boot, but then after the second boot will go away (which is what you noticed when it disappeared). However even flashing stock Odin image will still not repair any Knox warranty status. If that tripped, there is currently no going back. Hope this helps clear things up. :good:
Thanks!
i had gone into the "odin" mode just yesterday and had seen that my KNOX is 0x0. I just had misread when i was rooting, but seems it has been cleared up now probably not going to worry about root until the Kit Kat update
Thanks again everyone for clearing my confused mind!

At the moment main thing I want to do is safely root and install recovery without triggering knox as I want the chance to install custom roms and not void my warranty as I can always use triangle away at a later date.
BTW have done a lot of reading but want to be 100% sure and would really like some experienced advice.

If you have an old bootloader you won't even have KNOX on it, lucky you.
If you have the new bootloader, it comes with KNOX.
You can check if you have a new or old bootloader by putting your phone in Download mode (Volume down + Home + Power buttons).
If the the top left corner is syas stuff like "KNOX warenty" etc. you have the new one.
Rooting using saferoot as mentioned earlier will not trigger KNOX anyways.
Installing a custom Recovery as well as installing a custom ROM will trigger KNOX (if you indeed have the new bootloader with KNOX offcourse).
I was trying to make sure my KNOX counter wasnt tripped before I ordered the services being provided by imeigurus.com I thought I could just check and return to the home screen. not the case. what do I do please help. I dont know what im doing.
I foolishly did the following:
**YOUR DEVICE CAN NOT HAVE TRIPPED KNOX*** KNOX COUNTER MUST BE 0X000
FIND THAT BY POWERING YOUR DEVICE OFF.
please take it easy on me when you reply. I now realize how STUPID it was for me to do something without knowing what I was doing in the first place.
You seem to have some issue you're not describing at all.
About knox tho all you need to do is boot the phone into bootloader mode, or download a knox checker app from play store.
Honestly unless your flashing roms and kernels or custom recovery to the phone, or if you rooted it in any way except by using the engineering version bootloader, your not going to have tripped knox. If you have tripped knox you cant untrip it. It is an actual fuse in the phone that literally blows. All the knox counter really does is check if the fuse is blown and counts the number of times unauthorised changes were made to the system.
