I want to develop an android game - Java for Android App Development

Hi guys,
As you can see in the title, I want to develop an android game. I don't have any programming skills but I can learn any of them
I want to make 2D game. I think I cant make 3D game because my laptop doesn't have a graphic card or enough ram. (It's only 2GB) and dual-core cpu.
So I have few questions:
- Which I should use? (Eclipse, C# or others, Unity 2D? etc?
- Are there any resources you can suggest?
- How much time you offer programming language to learn? (I think I'll understand quickly)
- Is it a waste of time to deal with this process or is worth it? (I'm asking in terms of revenue.)
These are the questions in my head now. Thanks.

LibGDX is a good games framework, you should use that together with Android Studio.

www.kilobolt.com has tutorials about learning java, android programming, game programming and game programming with libgdx

Java is easier than C# IMO so you're better going with LibGDX unless you really want a challenge

Right i also prefer libgdx [emoji56]

Okey so I'm going with LibGDX. Oh and what about the monetizing? I'm asking again; Is it a waste of time to deal with this process or is it worth it?

Have a look for an admob tutorial or something similar

Depends... unless you're game becomes the next flappy bird in terms of viral craze then you are unlikely to earn major $$$ from doing it. Most of us do this (create apps/games) for fun as a hobby. Plus if you want to go into an area of computing or software development as a career then the experience and knowledge gained from it is well worth while.

Hmm, can someone give me a good libgdx resource?

Looks like Kilobolt needs update? I think the tutorials are old.

Dont think so, libgdx tutorial is 1 year old. But maybe there are newer one somewhere in the net

Unity have a great 2D toolkit.

LibGdx is great to create a 2d game and pretty simple to use. I used it to make a game with it available on android that should become open source soon, so if you want I can send you the github link when ready.
You can find many resources on the web to help you getting started.
I don't remember them all but there are few.

I like Unity for game development on Android best. Implementing game graphics directly on top of OpenGl is also something I enjoy, but I had a lot of problems with OpenGl in my current App. If the shaders are compiling are compiling on one plattform without errors, and working the way you want, there is no guarantee that those will work on all plattforms which support the same OpenGl version. Getting as much plattform as possible for testing was a real nightmare. Using a framework which does the job of rendering for you makes things easier.

I recommend unity for game development because we can use same content to build on iOS,iPad...ie it promotes cross-platform integration..
You can get tons of resources for unity..check their official site,YouTube..

Planning to learn coding games for android - need help

I would love to create an android game. So I am planning to start learning it.
I have coded an application already and I think I know the basics. So now I want to get into game programming which is too complex if I heard it right.
I would like my fellow developers who have experience in coding games to give me some links and tutorials which will come handy for newbie like me.
Thanks in advance!

I think the best way to learn any new area of software development is to get stuck into a project. I've been working in various embedded and real-time environments for years but a couple of years ago myself and a couple of mates decided to try to make a game. At the time we wanted to learn C# so we dived into the XNA framework & made something that ran on Windows & XBox. It was never released, but I learned a lot of new stuff. Started with their tutorials and went from there. I can't help with links and so on for Android but don't be put off by the idea that games are too complex - the first software job I ever did was on a full size submarine simulator for the Navy & that really was complicated!
I think that this is a very good piece of advice: http://www.raywenderlich.com/12065/how-to-create-a-simple-android-game
It helped me very much.

This series uses the framework libGDX, which enables you to write your game once and easily port it to many different platforms.

I totally support this. I created my first Android game (Rock Ninja) with no previous game development experience thanks to the awesome Libgdx framework/community.
Yeah, LibGDX great thing and very easy to learn on GoogleCode's wiki page by simply reading topics one by one. Of course if you are familiar with java first
I'm also member of libGDX community, even helped to fix some bugs in particle editor. But after deeper look at this engine, you find some problems in deployment on other platforms. So, I'm looking at the Unity 3d now, besides it became free for android and iOS version.

True, iOS is still work in progress with Libgdx. Good news is that the new RoboVM backend(that will replace Monotouch/Xamarin) is looking really promising and a first app has already been successfully published to the Appstore.
I have a decent stash of books on mobile development. I would start with either monogame, libGDX(provided you know openGL), AndEngine, Unity3D, or use cross platform tools that turn HTML5/CSS3/Javascript into native code. Give me a PM if you need anything, best of luck :good:

Internally yes, but it's abstracted by the framework for you not to need to worry about it.

Advise needed: How do I go about developing my first android app ?

Hi,
I am a recently laid off 30 year old SAP consultant from India. Over the last few weeks, I have been reading about the wonderful world of android apps. There is a great opportunity in India for android apps as millions of smart phones are sold every year. I have decided on building apps targeted at the Indian stock market - like stock screeners, that help people reach a proper investment decision. I want to make money out of my apps, so I want then to be fairly professional so that somebody buying them wont feel cheated. Also, there are not many (any) stock screener apps targeted at Indian stock market. So there is an opportunity there and I want this idea to be my first.
But how do I go about it ? I learnt Java at college, 10 years ago. My Java is highly amateurish even after I refreshed it over the last few weeks.I have bought a book on MIT App Inventor...and developed a few simple example apps already and tested them on my mobile. I am not yet sure App Inventor can help me develop more complex apps like the one I mentioned above.
So, I am desperately looking for advise from people who have been there, done that. How do I go about developing my first app ? Should I go about it the hard way - learn Java better ? Read a book on Android application development ? Build Web Apps using HTML5, JavaScript, JQuery ? Or stick to MIT App Inventor ? Try some app builder development tool like Tiggzi, Codiqa or Kinvey ?
I really need your advise as I really need to develop something quickly and make money out of it. :fingers-crossed:
Hi!
As far as i can help....i made some apps, some of them native with Java and others with HTML5.
From my experience, if you plan to make somekind of "atlas app (like wikipedia)" or not very user interface intensive or if you already know html5+css+javascript, you could go with html5, but i will always recomend native with Java as you have much more control over you app.
Anyway, if starting from 0, go for Java (Android SDK) get any tutorial around the web, there are tons of them, some better than others ofc, and free.
Hope you find your way to go!
good luck!

Thanks for that. But may I also know your opinion on MIT App Inventor ?
I started with App Inventor and quickly out grew it. Using java will make it easier to move on to complex apps or add more complexity to any current ones.

I personally wouldnt use app inventor nor any other kind of "easy app maker"
I would not use the inventor, too.
I recommend reading the Head's First Java books (skip the UI part) and for Android the Vogella tutorials.

(Btw, you cannot build an app quickly to make big money. If you want to be successful, you need to spend a lot of time on development.)

My Hibernate trainer quoted the following "You guys are brought up with IDE we used to compile on console". My sincere suggestion even in this RAPID developmental technologies around refresh your "Java skills" on console (DOS or Unix your wish) and make use of Eclipse IDE with Android SDK plugins for fast development. That would do. Start with Eclipse Helios and Google Android SDK and AVDs. Here you go... http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I have developed a couple of very good apps and I use one myself but Google play store expects payment to become one of their developers Why should I pay for my own app to releasing to public for free? I choose XDA let them validate and evaluate my apps and enjoy. Let us CJava++++
The day is not far may be you get donated enough expand your ideas.
My advice is - don't read books, just start coding. A year ago I knew absolutely nothing about Java or Android. Find a webpage with sample android Activity. Start spawning your code from there. That's how I did it. Then lear something about deriving from View class... and so on...
Hey guys, thank you for all the advise. I will go through what each one of you has said and do things systematically.....I am basically starting from zero......so, lets see how far I go....and I will inform you guys about my progress and seek guidance from you.
Thanks again.

Yea it wasn't always good but now they have a good training part + they provide sample code that you can run and fiddle with
It has a couple good step by step stuff, but its mostly "add this code" and has snippets that don't often make sense till you have a decent understanding of the rest of the code.

Creating An Android App with No Java Experience

Hi everyone!
I hope everyone is having a great Christmas. I just got a nexus 7 for Christmas and really want to make an android app now. I've learned other languages before like HTML 5, CSS3, but not java. How should I go about learning java and then making an app? Thanks and enjoy the break!

Sorry, html nor css3 is comparable with java!! If you know JavaScript or PHP that would be an advantage.
Don't buy a book about android developing: you'll get frustrated! Learn java first: It isn't as hard as you think after a week: Don't give up. If you know java, android will be much more easy!

Do you have some tutorials links regarding Java for android ? I am looking for a good tutorial to start but with all the options I'm scared of wasting my time with tutorial that are too complicated or just bad...
The "Programming Mobile Applications for Android Handheld Systems" course starts on Coursera on 21-th january. May be it will be useful for you.
Java for Android is slightly different from regular Java. That is, the programming language itself is the same, but some of the packages (libraries) are different.
I think it's best to start with regular Java (for desktop apps), because there's a lot more books, tutorials and other resources to get you started. Once you know the basics of the Java language, you can then move to Android.
I can recommend Netbeans as a good IDE for starting with Java development.
The official IDE for Android is Eclipse, with a special Android plugin provided by Google. I don't find Eclipse very userfriendly, and it is not that stable either, so I don't think it's that good for beginners.
Some code I develop for Android today, I develop with Netbeans as a regular Java app first, then import the code into Eclipse and modify it to work for Android. But that's mostly the 'business end' code (I mainly develop graphical/rendering stuff...). UI code is entirely different for regular Java and Android, so it wouldn't make sense to do that in Netbeans first.
Youtube or Amazon will help you.
For learning Java I can recommend the newboston videos on youtube, his Android series even explains the java in good detail.
There are some good books for java, check Amazon reviews for the best ones. I like the Dietal How to Program, Java: The complete reference, and Java for Dummies.

Difficult
it's so difficult
I can't consider myself an expert, but from my experience from learning programming (android or anything else), i'm learning by doing.
First i learn the basic of course, then try to make some simple apps or games, then asking question on a forum like this when facing problem I can't solve myself.
From what I know, there's no easy way (or fast way) of learning programming.
If you only want to make an android app or game a fast way, then i suggest using game maker or something.
Does anyone know where I can get a tutorial on how to start building up an android "game" app? I found a few but I am unsure if they're outdated and I'd rather start with something thats up to date. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Check out this link. I have made a collection of good tutorials that I found on the Internet. For the game app check these links:
learnopengles
OpenGL ES Guide
OpenGL ES Training
Don't start with examples. If you already know java, read android fundamentals else starts with java and then android fundamentals.
Below is the link It has all the fundamental concepts and components explained nicely.
https://developer.android.com/guide/components/fundamentals.html
There are several site like tuturialspoint, http://www.zoftino.com/, vogella etc. which provide tutorials, examples and sample code.
Spend time and understand those concepts so that you'll have solid base to go ahead with examples, coding and building apps which perform better and provide best user experience.
As others have pointed out, it greatly depends on whether you have already "met" another programming language (C#, C++, ...) or not. Going from C++/C# to Java is incredible easy and you perhaps don't need to study Java a lot, you can jump on Android straight away. (Google's developer pages are excellent start).
However, if you don't know anything, I'd recommend to familiarise with Java first, on your PC. Because learning two things (programming in Java + Android ecosystem) is much harder. Not impossible, just harder.
So as soon as you get your basic loops, ifs, classes working, you can take a look at Android examples (so you can actually read them).

learning to develop android apps

hey guys i am studying networking in school and was required to take a beginning program course for my major and absolutely loved it. I learned a lot of python in that course and would like to start making android apps. I have been playing around a lot with java and downloaded adt and eclipse, but it seems like every youtube video i watch has an older version of eclipse.
i have been kind of struggling learning things any suggestions?

Just Go to developer.android.com and start, you can think of apps and try to make them, if you faced anything search google
Just do what i did and practice with small stuff, such as widgets or if you don't fancy that the there's a lot of online tuts.
The best place to go for easy to understand tuts is androidhive.info, his tuts has helped me so much when i first started it's unreal!
Like the other said, be sure to read a lot of online tutorials! Seriously, there is gold out there.
Also, try playing around with Android a little. Its nearly impossible to learn without actually doing it. I found creating a project in eclipse and making sure it creates an activity for you was a great place to start. Then you can start to add things you learned from tutorials into it this very simple application.
i would start small before getting into anything big? One step at a time
There are tons of videos on youtube about android dev in eclipse, try filtering your search on this or last year so you dont really hit those old ones. Good luck
