I have also broken the screen on my Nexus 4. As so many others have done before me. But since the phone is a very good phone, I want to use it as far as possible without changing screens. LCD screen works and shows everything that going on the phone. But you can't touch it.
In a weak moment so I reset the phone to factory settings. It was stupid, because I had turned on USB debugging. When I start the phone normally, it going to the default settings for language, etc. Since I can not use the touch screen anymore it ends here.
So I hope some of you geniuses (most of you XDA-guys are geniuses) can help or at least give me some answers:
1. What would you do?
2. Can I somehow enable USB-debugging mode from e.g. fastboot?
3. Is it possible to "fake" the settings so it's conected to my Google account? (then I can install apps from Play).
I'm not sure on the n4, but on the n5 you can hook up a keyboard and mouse thru the usb otg using wireless. You might explore that possibility.

According to Google the Nexus 4 does not support USB mouse I could link to the document at Google, but the XDA forum prevents me to link in posts since I haven't got more than 10 posts.

Anyone?
you can install a custom kernel (if you have a custom recovery, or dont have a lockscreen security) that supports otg, then use it (however the n4 needs external power, so you will need a otg -y cable or use some usb hub which gives the power to the peripherals)

Hello!
I have seen that it has a driver for it http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/nexus-one-gets-usb-host-driver-from-a-dude-with-an-oscilloscope/ .
But where to download and how to use?

but there is no instruction how do I setup it for HDD drive, and how i setup the driver!
Most other people think there's enough info, but I must admit, it's not that clear to me (but I could probably get there).
The OP seems pretty responsive to SPECIFIC questions, so you could always try and ask?

LOL! That sounds like Yoda.
HDD drive is just another mass storage device. What works for USB Flash, will most probably work for USB drives too.
But as you could probably see, it's not an easy switch, you need to do a lot to connect it - which makes it a bit obsolete, at least until OTG drivers are used, allowing both USB host and device operation.
Can i use normal nexus one usb cabel for that? I found some instructions how to flash drivera, but how to use it, after you flashed em?

Works fine on mine. Try one of the usb ports on the keyboard. Also when you plug the phone in USB does the android USB storage screen come up?
You need to press the enable USB button on that screen before Mac will recognize it.

Don't have an iMac but I do have two MacBooks (or I did before I sold my old MacBook two days ago) and both of them picked up my Nexus S fine. Oddly, though the new MacBook never could find the phone for ADB.

And nothing happens on the computer? It should pop up a drive called NO NAME
Note that since Snow Leopard, the default setting in Finder is to not show disks on the desktop. You have to go in the Finder and look at the list of connected disks on the top left-hand column, you'll surely see it there.

are you sure? I'm running snow leopard and have no memory of changing that on either laptop. They both came stock with snow leopard.

I have a macbook with snow leopard. When I mount a drive it does not show on my desktop. I have to open finder to see it under devices. I don't know if it an option setting or not. In comparison my old Mac (before OSX) would show all drives mounted on the top under the Mac Hd Drive. Make sure you are setting your phone to connect also.
I have never had any problems on either PC or Mac.

Of course it's an option, and has been an option for as long as I have used OS X (since Tiger at the very least). Apple just changed the default in Snow Leopard.
kenvan19: if you don't see that as the default on both your Macs, could it be because you have migrated your users from previous Macs? The settings you had before would have been imported, and you would have never seen the new default...

Did you try another cable at all?
I'm really scared now, I'm in the same situation. I just bought a phone off eBay last week and I was told on the forum to try a new cable which I ordered and has yet to arrive.
The seller said it was "New-mint condition" mentioned nothing about a corrupt usb drive.
What can I do?? Is there anyway I can fix it myself? I really want to be able to transfer music to it.
View the last 2 pages for good information, ATM USB OTG DOES NOT WORK, but maybe (or propably) it is a software issue, which can be resolved...

I think the last Nexus devices were able to host USB drives such as usb sticks etc., so do you think that it will be possible with this one?
16gb would be more than enough for me if I only use it for rom, apps, pictures and music but 720p movies won't have enough place (maybe just 1 or 2).
Is USB host mode maybe available for nearly every device (maybe only after another kernel)?
And I read somewhere that it is possible to host usb drives with "Nexus Media Importer", but it is also possible to access them via ES File Explorer for example or maybe even with Play Movies / Play Music?
At the moment I use HTC Desire (smaller movies at ~1gbyte), slowly it's time for an upgrade and this would be a must-have for me otherwise I won't buy it atm...
Maybe with USB OTG I could buy only 8gb, that would be really nice because 50€ (65USD) for 8gb is really expensive :/
Thanks for (hopefully incoming) answers
+1
Planned to ask the same, but you opened a topic already
Also with this if anyone knows. Can you access a OTG source from a recovery like CWM or TWRP? That would make the 16GB meaningless.
Yes the Nexus 4 supports usb OTG (and you probably won't need a custom kernel for this)
Yes you can use ESFile explorer and run everything from your hard drive
I think latest TWRP offer OTG support but I'll probably never use it since you may "brick" your phone if the flash fail and not sure if otg is perfectly stable...

Thanks for the answer :good:
Is the USB drive automatically mounted?
And is the media on it displayed in medi player apps like Music or MX Player or do I have to click on each single file with ES file explorer to play it?

Where have you got this information?? I can say out the box OTG is not working. Anyone have any ideas yet?
Would it be possible to have a Nexus 4 case with a microSD slot that connected via USB OTG?
For me an attached normal USB Flash Drive (8GB) did not work. Even the light of the flash drive did not a single blink.
I am not sure if the Nexus 4 provides Voltage for usb devices.
Just to confirm, the Nexus 4 does not support USB OTG out of the box. Just tested it myself - works fine on the missus' Galaxy S2, but not on my Nexus 4.
I'm fairly certain that you still need to be rooted for it to work properly, as with the Nexus 7.

Yup - No luck
There's a shread of light that OTG works with the N4 rooted?
Hope it does cause if not...not buying it.
Well I know its been talked about in the other threads of the possibilities. So now since we have the devices here, are proceeding with unlocking and rooting the devices. Has anyone had luck?
Sadly I do not have a OTG cable yet to test this but at least wanted to start somewhere.
Edit: Yes it is, see post below for link. Device needs to be rooted for it to work!
Says he was able, after root, to mount 2 drives simultaneously.

Brilliant! Thanks
Has anyone try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer
It doesn't require root so it should be good for stock users.
I can confirm a stock non rooted N7 I threw in a USB flash drive and read files and played a movie real quick earlier just to see if it all worked, didn't try much more then that but can try some more tomorrow. Still busy transferring and reinstalling apps from old N7.
I cannot get Nexus Media Importer to work on stock. It reports all memory sticks as protected.
I have a non rooted stock nexus 7 2013. The media importer doesn't work for me also.

Now rooted using Stickmount, still not working. The drive can be seen but it seems only small files can be viewed, and you can't copy them or do anything with them. Non of my, larger, movie files show up.
I was able to copy a 3GB movie file from a flashdrive to the onboard memory with no issues. Maybe try a powered USB hub? I didn't have to in this case but it might help.
I tried to read an external hard drive and had to use a powered USB hub to even have it mount. Alas, couldn't read anything. Don't know if it's because the hard drive was formatted NTFS or because it was 750GB.

Can anyone tell if it's possible to to use OTG while wireless charging the device?
Need this for my car dashboard tablet replacement.
I think the problem with that would be that it would drain after than it charges. Qi charging doesn't have great amperage.

works for me as well, I am wondering if there will be a root flash-able mod like the original N7 had to turn OTG on.
Why does Google not allow OTG to be active out of box? Is the lure of trying force people into using the cloud that strong? Clouds drain more battery compared to local content and wifi connections do not have 100% coverage like local does.
The reality is the reason this device is priced at near break-even pricing IS the cloud, so this is why there is no SD slot or full OTG, out of box. Most people do not mod, so most people will be part of their cloud control strategy. I would rather pay $50 more and let Google make a profit on the device, that way I could have a micro sd slot and OTG out of box. Curse Google and their quest for content control and data mining! :silly:
Earlier I said it wasn't working, without knowingly changing anything both Stickmount and Nexus Media Importer now work. I am rooted and perhaps Stickmount is making NMI work.

Yes and I also used it with a USB External HD and it worked fine there, too.
I had issues with OTG on my first N7 2013. It was a flaky connection and would go into a connect/disconnect loop and then just stop all together. I returned it and picked up a different. That one seems to work fine.
Stock, not rooted, and using Nexus Media Importer.
Some people may want to try rebooting their N7 as well.... If you look at the NMI app in the Play Store the developer knows there are a few issues with Android 4.3 when first using the app.

cant find a solid info that the LS980 supports USB OTG. tried google and now that their discussion filter is gone, it make finding answers a bit harder. same thing here, nothing for sure that it works, but it does for other G2's??
anyway, just got this phone last week and also got a new canon t5i dslr. was hoping to be able to pull the sdhc out of the camera and get an OTG reader for my wifes phone( also a ls980) so she can post pics without the need of a pc, whilst out and about.

It should support USB otg I can't think of any reason that lg would disable that feature I know that it is supported in android 4.2.2 by default but it should work.
