Rooted but no Recover - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So, I have a SPH-L720T with root but no recovery. Could anyone point me to how I could install TWRP or CWM from here?

Grab a tar file for the recovery that you want from their downalod page. And use Odin to flash it. If you don't know what some of these terms mean I suggest you search and read more before flashing anything on your phone.

You can look in the original development section for this phone and find links. There's philz and twrp.

No luck, it goes through the process but when I hold the volume down button, power, and menu it just takes me to the same old screen as if nothing has happened. Odin say PASS! but nada. Grabbed this one http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/178 and grabbed the openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-jfltespr.tar.

Recovery Mode?

How does one get into custom recovery mode for the Sprint Galaxy tab?
I can't Clockwork into recovery, it takes me directly into the Android Stock recovery, so...basically, I've no idea how to flash a ROM on this.
Any help?

You do not use recovery to flash ROMs on the Tab. You use heimdall from your desktop. Samsung devices are different from most other Android devices. You can use Clockworkmod to do backups and restores. If you have Clockworkmod installed on your Tab, the only way to get to it is through software on your system. Trying to boot to it only takes you to the stock recovery.
EDIT: You can flash ROMs from CWM. See below posts.
I'm confused, this thread mentions clockwork a couple of times (for example, the thread that explains how to get EXT4 on your tab says that you must press up+power to get into Clockwork in order to flash it).
All I need is a simple guide from anyone here or a pointer to where I can get clockwork. I've used Odin before, but not Heimdall, so I don't know how I'd go about installing a ROM that way.
This is the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275031)
I beg to differ. I'm running ICS 4.0.3 on my Sprint Galaxy Tab and flashed it using CWM 5.0.2.7. I used heimdall to flash CWM, and after that I can flash roms all day long from recovery. Check over at rootzwiki, everything you need is detailed over there.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? This is the only rootzwiki page I found, but it doesn't help me much:
I'm trying to get recovery mode on my tab, not just root.
Can anyone help me understand this?
Basically, I've downloaded that file, put it under "PDA" in Odin, and then let it reboot, but everytime the tablet reboots it gets into a bootloop. What am I doing wrong?
I'm flashing it on top of "Queens_p100_EF17_Rooted_PDA"
From everything I've read it should work right?

Just to be sure you are setting the Tab into Download mode before connecting to your PC/Laptop right? ...i.e. turn off; press and hold volume up + power on.

Go to Rodderik's development starter thread get stock ef17 tar under #1 and flash thru Odin then flash CWM kernel in #2 over the top. This worked for me.

Wrong ROM, constant rebooting, recovery not accessible!

hi guys,
I downloaded this ROM which now I know was not the right one for my phone, I flashed it smoothly through TWRP, (this was my 1000th time flashing custom ROM's on different phones), rebooted the phone and from there on I have this constant rebooting which happens so quickly that doesn't even allow the first page's logo to appear on the screen before it restarts again, i have a vibration every 7 seconds or so. I have tried every mean I know of to get into the recovery but no luck, the download mode however is reachable, I used odin to put the stock rom back but the phone is still not booting up and acts the same, please help me if you can. I also tried flashing a recovery only image on the phone through Odin, but it doesn't allow me I think due to my bootloader still being locked.
thanks a lot.
I have a i337.

when I press vol up + power button it vibrates once now I have tried two things, one I left it right away and it goes to the rebooting cycle, but if I keep holding the buttons combination nothing happens, the weird thing is that even for getting in the DL mode I have to release the power button first while still holding the vol dn so it would get in there, and the page to the dl mode renders very very slowly, also the page after that after I press the vol up.
Recovery mode is vol up + home + power. Release just the power button when the phone vibrates
You were able to successfully flash a stock ROM back? If so, see if Kies will recognize it and do an 'emergency firmware update' or something like that.
Edit: Kies > Tools > Emergency Firmware Recovery.

the flashing goes through properly, it also gives the green message of passed at the very end before it reboots into the cycle. I am downloading Kies, never used it before so we'll see.

I can get into dl mode, I went to sammobile but didn't see anything compatible with mine, there were mostly international versions of it, or different regions other than the US. do you have a link I would love to try a new firmware I think that should do it although I am not sure why the stock rom isn't getting it in order
one more thing I forgot to say is that I erased the system folder through twrp before flashing the last rom, something that I had done before and was corrected by the odin.

kies fails to recognize it in dl mode, and the frequency of rebooting is too high that it cant catch it in the normal mode either!

Go to sammobile.com. you have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip. Extract the .tar.md5 file from it using 7-zip. Use that in odin. It's the stock firmware

Hard bricked phone?

Hello everyone,
I recently tried to flash a kernel and it seems that it was a corrupted download or something of the sorts and no whenever my phone powers on, the phone sits on a black screen and just vibrates. I have gotten into download mode and ODIN'd it with the stock image but it put me right back at the same thing. Has anyone else had this issue and if so can itt be fixed?
Thanks in advance!
It would help to know what device you have, what firmware you where on and what kernel you tried to flash

After odin says sucessful, you have to remove the battery cause it will be stuck stuck on the download screen and go into recovery and factory reset the phone and it should boot right up.I dont think your phone is hard-bricked if you was able to use odin.

yeah i have done the samething. i went from stock rooted and had cyanogenmod 10 successfully downloaded and running one night. The next morning i installed ktoonsez kernel 100% certain it was for my cyano and everything i was running and its 90% hard bricked. The only thing i can do is get it into odin mode. Ive also flashed my att ucuamdl file with odin to try and reset it and it has said successful. The only thing i had checked was t ime reset and reboot. So i pulled the battery to try and fire it back up and nothing happens but a black screen and a little vibration. Kind of pisses me of since im not the only one who has had this happen. So far ive still had no luck with anything about the phone. no recovery, no nothing. Anybody else know anything?

If you can get into odin mode flash the mdl file again but make sure you have nothing ticked such as the f rest time or auto boot. And once you done pull out your usb cord and it should still say downloading on the screen. So pull the battery and then place it back in but dont boot up go into recovery what i do to get in recovery is hold the volume up,power and home button until i see the recovery booting sign at the top left corner then i let go off the power button and hold the volume up and home button until it boots into recovery.but when you go into recovery it will download the install the mdl file so you might have to do the recovery part twice after it installs the file then factory reset your phone and it should boot right up.

If all it does is go into download mode. Then you are lucky in a way because you can Odin back to stock which fixes almost all issues. This will delete you data, more than likely. Which is only apps, messages, calls, not your pictures on internal storage.

It sucks. But stuff like this happens. And being rooted you have to know the risks of flashing and modding your phone. And its not that bad. Its exactly the same as wiping your phone to install a new ROM. You delete all the same stuff. Not hard to get back up and running.

No do not do this! Just go to tarp site and get the twrp tar file for the version you want. Then use Odin to load twrp recovery. This way you won't lose everything. Also to boot to recovery you can just use power and volume up. More than likely twrp didn't flash correctly so you have no recovery. Flashing it with Odin may solve the problem.

He specifically stated he didn't want to wipe. Plus why return completely to stock if there is no need. You SPARKY need to settle down and try to give useful information for a persons particular problem. Running around like a chicken with its head cut off for a simple recovery missflash. Then to try and bash me because I actually helped him not to have to set everything up again. What if he didn't have a proper nandroid or hadn't ran a recent TB backup. Then he would have lost all data. Now all is well. Check post 7 if you missed the part where he is asking for a better way.

He didn't say he didn't want to wipe until after. He didn't say that when I told him to Odin back to stock. I am settled. Lol. At the time that was the only way I knew we to resolve this so I gave him that option. It was good that you guys knew about the tar version of the recovery.
Now I learned something new.

Cannot setup phone (unfortunately, setting has stopped).

Hello, today i wanted to flash a new rom on my galaxy s4, rooted it a while ago but hadn't flashed a rom. Went to Rom Manager and was gonna do a backup but it was giving me an error so I could not do the backup. Since I had saved all my pictures and everything on dropbox I just went ahead and went to recovery mode and wiped my data so I could flash the new rom. When I tried to wipe the cache partition it just rebooted my phone. When the phone started up I get all the usual setup from TouchWiz. I started setting it all up as usual but when I get to the final screen (learn about key features) I hit finish and then i get the "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." not allowing me to continue on to my home screen. So as of right now my phone is basically a paper weight because I can not to anything. Has anyone else encountered this ? Is there a work around ? Will appreciate all help.
P.s. Sorry if there is already a post about this, I just don't frequent this page very often and don't quite understand how all the search functions and all that work.

First off what firmware are you on. MDL, mf3, mj6, mj9? To check go to settings - more - about device and check build number. If it is mf3 than you need to go to the general section and read how to odin the md5 file same as other build numbers. You just have to take your time and read.

Never use rom manage to flash a rom. As stated, we need to know the firmware you're on to help you.

Can you boot it into download mode?
Edit, do you have a custom recovery on it and did you make a nandroid?
Do you have safestrap or how do you flash roms? Because if you have safestrap than your on mf3.. If you can install Roms without safestrap than you must be on MDL.

I dont have safestrap, and I hadn't installed any roms on my S4 yet, this was going to be the first time. I use to flash rome on my S2 a while back and was gonna do it for the first time with my S4 through recovery mode. Sorry if im not really giving you key information, I just don't know it. I learned the basics of flashing roms and that was about it. Obviously the wrong thing to do because I might have just rendered my phone useless.

Yes I can boot into download mode. Yes, I have clockworkmod installed. No I could not make a backup, It kept crashing and would not allow me.
I would try to odin the mdl firmware in download mode. You can get the firmware at sammobile.com. You'll have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. Use that in odin, PDA.

You can try this guide. It's not for the s4 but all the steps are the same. Just don't use any files except for Odin linked in it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924

Check to see if there are any popups that you have to allow before a connection can be made. Sometimes they appear behind the ODIN screen (on the PC). Also, make sure you have the proper drivers installed.
If you can get to clockwork, just copy a new rom to your SD card and flash it. You'll be up and running in 5 minutes.
