I got my S4 about a year ago, and it came loaded with MF9 / 4.2.2. I rooted it and added the hotspot hack and have generally been pretty happy with it. I know there have been a handful of updates in the past year that have likely introduced new features but I know there are also new restrictions. I keep wondering if I'm missing anything significant by not upgrading. If I did, I'd probably err on the side of caution and go straight stock NAE.
So, any good reason to upgrade? I've been away for quite a while so appreciate your input.
Do you have knox? Cause if not never upgrade.. If you do.. No reason not to upgrade
Nope, no Knox, which has been my major hesitation because I know there's no going back. But I'm also falling further behind while stuck at MF9, which perhaps isn't such a bad thing, but I get antsy knowing there's been several releases since then.
My bootloader is mf9...But all my software and modem are up to date.
So i have android 4.4.2 and NAE modem.
So i am away from knox. All things are working well.
But i want to flash the full stock via odin and trip my knox counter since I will root my phone and also can flash custom recovery but the only thing i will miss if i decided to return to previous version of Android i can't do that.
So i won't see behind. I will flash anything new.
U have the holy grail of sgs4s dont go and ruin it. Keep bootloader flash twrp and rock a custom rom. Updates are only put out to destroy you and rape your gf.. Your not missing anything. To my knowledge bootloader being old only limits the STOCK roms you may use. (please c9rrect me if jeeded)... In my experience in 33 years i have never gained anything by upgrading a firmware on anything phone psp xbox router u name it.. Nothing but loss of hackability

I THOUGHT what I wanted was simple enough but apparently with Samsung nothing is ever simple.
I have the i9505 S4 and am currently on the Pre-Rooted I9505XXUBMGA rom. That means 4.2.2, Stock Recovery and PRE-KNOX bootloader.
My custom flash counter is also 0 as I've only ever flashed the pre-rooted stock kind of roms. No triangle has ever appeared on my screen.
What I want to do is install a 4.3 TW rom WITHOUT flashing a custom recovery (so probably through Odin) and WITHOUT having to flash the KNOX-enabled bootloader.
The reasons should be obvious enough, I want this phone kept as close to stock as possible with what I do being completely reversible without having to rely on Triangle Away as with every new firmware Samsung appears to be even more hell-bent on breaking it.
Obviously I'd want said rom to actually function correctly as I've read things like sound and/or wifi breaking or mobile data dropping with/without the phone being on sleep etc...
So, any takers?

Hi,
From where I am,I can see 3 options.
1.Stay where you are on 4.2.2
You just need to flash stock firmware ,and you are back to out-of-the-box state.
But....you want 4.3.... so,
2.Flash a custom recovery, and you have the choice of every custom ROM in the DEV section.4.22,4.3 ,TW,AOSP , you get my drift. As long at it does not contain the new knox bootloader, you can get back to out-of-the-box state in 2 easy steps:
Triangle Away.
Flash stock firmware.
3.Try to flash the new knox-pox 4.3 ROM and be stuck there.(because there is no coming back)
Look HERE
The [OP] explains it well.
And this is probably the ROM you would choose.(close to stock)
It seems the samsung is determined to mess things up for the user who wants to easily mod their own phones.
It has gotten so bad, that the [OP] has even jumped ship to the Z1.
He says he will maintain that ROM,but for how long, because they have already moved the goalposts twice...
I am on 2.
And I intend to stay there, because I like to be in charge of what goes on my phone.
Devs will almost certainly maintain their ROMS,and updates like 4.4 will come along in time.
Only you can make the choice.
Hopefully,I have given you some options.
Yeah, that's the thread I flashed my current 4.2.2 rom from. I saw him throw the towel and decided this just wasn't gonna work.
I guess I need to take the plunge and install Philz recovery.
Somewhat subjective I know but, which 4.3 TW custom ROM seems to work best when the OLD Pre-KNOX bootloader is being kept and with which modem? (I've seem answers vary wildly on this one).

Hi,
The reason you have seen such wild variations on this,is because it is so subjective.
This is where the fun begins.
Trying out different ROMS,and seeing which is best suited to you,and your requirements.
Best advice...read the first post of a ROM,and see if it has what you want from a ROM...especially the bit about new knox bootloader removed.
And remember to make a nandroid!
As for modem,if you are having no issues or signal problems at the moment, stick with the one you are on.
Hey there, I've got an AT&T GS4 running MK2 4.3. I hate it, it's basically the worst update ever as it's managed to make using my phone a chore in pretty much every way.
I was trying to upgrade to 4.4 GPE or really even 4.3 GPE, but after managing to root my device, I found that the only way to flash a ROM is via Safestrap, and I haven't been able to find anything at all in terms of information on (a) how to flash a ROM via Safestrap 3.71 on MK2, and (b) which ROMs are even compatible with doing so.
So, barring that, my other option was to downgrade back to 4.2.2. I understand Knox screwed everything in this regard, but I'm wondering if anyone's managed to do it without a Custom Recovery? Or how I'd even go about it?
If it's impossible, someone just please rip the bandage off and tell me so I can resign myself to my fate of having turned my amazing phone into a piece of crap. Thanks!
Okay folks I'm a newbbie here so take it easy. By trade I'm a hardware guy not a software guy by any means. And yes I've tried to google this and can't find a straight answer. Okay so after reflashing and bring a buddy's phone out of a soft brick and rooting it , i would like to do it to my my note 3 sm-n900a att phone. I know there is no real root option for KM NC2 due to the bootloader and i know i can't roll back to jelly bean which i like a hell of alot more. Kk with att has **** of a lot of bugs as far as i can tell. Anyways over the past week i managed to get MLG on the phone but still can't roll back. Bootloader is A3. After last night I got CSC to MI9 everything else is MLG. What I was thinking about was reflashing to SM-N900T firmware NB4 and rooting from there. Would this be possible to do or would the NB4 software jack up the phone as far as service or anything? Or would there be something else I would need to do along with this. I was planning on going back to a NC2 based romantic after wards. Extream Kat might be my choice. I just need to get to root to do safestrap.
Ok, I've been running a Note 2 for a VERY long time since released. ROMing, rooting, etc was super simple and did it often. However, its been a year or more since I've had to do anything. Now with my new phone it seems there are a lot of new hoops to jump through. I already got the AT&T has detected something yada yada you're screwed yada yada and had to flash back stock firmware with Odin.
So I have rooted with towelroot. I've tried installing the TWRP via their app which caused the first soft AT&T brick.
I don't care about warranty, timer fuse, flash ticker etc etc. I bought the S5 new but second hand. I hate asking to be spoon fed how or where to look but I'm at my wits end. Don't even have to say anything just provide some links. I havent been on a stock android in years and this is killing me.
I've read something about needing Loki to bypass bootloader but saw it's for S4 and not sure what to do with it.
I have the US version of the Galaxy S5 running 4.4.2 Model 900A. I see CWM and TWRP links I've found say they can't do to bootloader lock so not sure where to go.
Thanks ahead of time!
Ok, waiting on my SD card to get here in the morning to use safestrap. What actual roms can I use? I see only things using stock kernel but can CM or other non basic stock roms?
Can I flash this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-resurrection-remix-5-3-4-t3033255
I'm on A01 bootloader and have flashfire etc via this thread. Running G900A_OF3_Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aof2-5-0-keeproot-t3149146
I own a G950U and have been holding out updating dealing with the annoying system upgrade notifications since i'm still on bootloader rev.2. My question is, is it even worth the trouble of rooting and flasing the one or two roms that are avaiable for this model or should i just update and stay stock (as there doesn't seem to be much in the rom development area of samsung devices going forward)?
Im stuck at the same point. I kinda wished i never rooted my phone, and I somewhat messed up and got stuck in a bootloop. Long story short i fixed it and am running this root by PartyCyborg and I like it alot. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-partcyborgrom-aqi6-deodexed-t3702988 theres the link and its the newest one not previous versions. If your going to run a Root this is what I would do.
yea I run stock rooted And i debate wether to upgrade so my sim unlocking software can unlock mine or stay root And so far I have stayed rooted
Yea...It seems to be a matter of opinion if your a legacy rom/root installer or up-to-date current tech type...I belong to the latter so I assume i'd be happier with this option, I've checked out this rom and attempted install one time, but quickly reverted due to time constrictions, but now that i have the time am trying to decide (because it doesn't always go right on the 1st try, lol) Thanks for the input guys!
btw, which carrier do you use? I have Verizon and was wondering about the hotspot issues i've read about.
