Hey here goes my nexus 7 grouper has some how got corrupted and the only thing that is still working is fastboot, However the usual recovery using the google stock roms i ether get signature mismatch or unknown error code (really useful error code).
Currently running bootloader 4.23 and was using stock android 4.4.3 before it all went oh so wrong.
I have tried flashing it back to stock with the nexus root toolkit and the flash batch file provided by google and both have failed.
Is there a way to force a flash to ignore all signatures and i will go back to an earlier rom from google that worked properly?
or do i need a new tablet as Asus support has been less than useful?
Cheers

Hello,
My August 2012 Nexus 7 got same issue.
Boot loop up to animated circles or Android update.
Rooted. CWM recovery. Stock ROM 4.4.3
General remark/ the device was getting really slow in spite of regular use of Lagfix.
Fastboot OK. That is in fact the only way to power off the device.
Wipe Data / Factory reset had no effect on bootloop.
Errors trying to flash official Factory image through adb: example " recovery.sig files not found". I tried to flash them individually
I tried the Nexus Toolkit: Error trying to load a factory image. Error trying to return to stock recovery.
I suspect a memory issue.
Finally I just return this morning the device to ASUS France, after requesting a Return Agreement.
No more warranty; I wonder if the resulting cost are worst this action if tablet is not reparable.
I am really upset.

I just got the answer from Ename, ASUS repair contractor in France.
Motherboard got problems. Need replacement.
Total cost 192 €.
Basically I have better to buy a new one.
That is really bitter after just 2 years .....!!!!!
Is the 2013 model more robust?

Hello,
The Nexus 7 21013 is slightly lighter, has a better resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels), adds a rear camera and sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 with 2048 MB RAM. So it is a nice increase in the specs. With a your repair cost of 192 it might be better to consider upgrading your Nexus experience. If you need further support feel free to email me at [email protected] with case number in the N140820223 subject line.

Bought a new Nexus 7 because my wife and I have them and love them. We had bought our daughter a cheap 'funtab' from walmart just so she could play a few games she loves and hopefully leave ours alone, the funtab was a complete POS so it was returned to WM and just bought her a N7 instead.
When booted, the tablet it immediately notified me of the update from 4.1.2 to 4.2.1. Each time it tried to update it would fail partially through, not sure why. So I thought I'd download and use the toolkit to force the update. After unlocking, rooting, installing busybox and so on. I choose the option to flash stock image. The update process started OK there but part way through gave an error, something about needing to be 'X' but is instead 'x' before going back to the home screen. Now the tablet is stuck in fastboot mode, and cant boot to either recovery or android. I think I may be in trouble here.... Any suggestions?
#1 reason why people shouldn't use tool kits to root. You have no idea what went wrong or where the problem occurred.
I'm assuming that your tablet is unlocked so you need to download a custom recovery and install it via fastboot.
Then download the Stock 4.2.1 ROM from the Android development section and flash it in the recovery.
This should give you an idea of how to do it.

I've done more research and I'm currently working on getting the android sdk going. I've downloaded it, jdk, the proper factory image (i think I f'd up by accidentally downloading the factory image for the hspa model). My question now is can the factory image be flashed from what appears to be fastboot mode, or do i need to flash custom recovery first (via the sdk)? I can confirm that the bootloaded is unlocked.
Ok so I was able to flash the stock image using the instructions found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796
This process went extremely well once I had all my ducks in a row. Thanks for the help.
Hello. 1 month ago i use Nexus 7 Toolkit for flash 4.2.1 stock firmware, because 4.2.2 don't wanna install without some default APK's.
So, I decided download at once 4.2.2, not 4.2.1, and i download it from developers.google.com and put archive in put_google_factory_image_here folder, run flash, and after flashing i get "Booting failed" message, i do not know what i must do, so i decided reboot nexus, power off and that's all. Nexus is a brick. Only crappy APX mode. I go to service center and today they fix it - change motherboard, lol.
And few mins ago i decided flash that 4.2.2 stock AGAIN, lol. Download from developers google com 4.2.2 archive, put it in special folder in nexus toolkit, and start flashing. AND AGAIN GOT "Booting failed" lol!
So, now i don't power off nexus, i put all files from firmware archive in fastboot folder, run flash-all.bat from stock firmware archive... and... ALL IS FINE!
If you download firmware from developers.google.com and when you flash it with nexus toolkit that's will brick your nexus. Why? I don't know. Flash-settings from google and from toolkit server are same. byte by byte.
That problem start only when 4.2.2 released. With flashing before 4.2.2 (when 4.2.1 will stable release) all will is fine.

Well.. I've never had any problems fastboot flashing 4.2.2 myself.
------
I would suggest you don't use toolkits...at all... period!
Learn FASTBOOT...
...and be extremely cautious when it comes to FLASHING the BOOTLOADER...
A corrupted BOOTLOADER flash will 'hardbrick' the device in a heartbeat - make sure you have a secure USB connection...
Test along these lines..
Code:
fastboot flash boot <a boot.img>
or
fastboot flash recovery <a recovery.img>
If these go across, the new BOOTLOADER probably will.
The worst that's going to happen (with these two) is a 'softbrick' - a headache at worst.
A headache you can get over...
Hardbrick is death - and nobody get's over that.
Rgrds,
Ged.
I know this. Thanks.
I flash 4.2.2 with fastboot. Because nexus 7 toolkit is buggy, when i upgrade android from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 with toolkit i got brick. Just read my 1 post
I give link to this thread creator of toolkit, maybe he fix this bug. Maybe no, anyway, start from this day i will flash firmwares ONLY with fastboot.
Good decision, i never used this kind of tool for flashing something.
Its a very presumptuous statement to say the Toolkit will brick your device if you flash a stock image using it. The toolkit has been used many many thousands of time to flash stock images and I test it extensively on both my nexus 7 devices when there is a new image released. The toolkit also uses exactly the same routine as the batch file included with the image so I know there isn't any problem with the code but regardless of that I will look at it later and see if any extra safety protocols can be added to prevent mistakes.
It would have helped if you listed exactly what you did and if there were any errors displayed when the images were being flashed via the Toolkit.
Mark.

I can't give you list of "errors" etc, just because i don't wanna again "brick" my nexus :/
What i did:
1. I enter in toolkit
2. Choose version (4.2.1 or 4.2.2, don't matter, i got "brick" on both versions)
3. Choose "download and flash stock"
4. Download stock from toolkit, or from google developers site
5. Flash downloaded firmware
After this i got "Booting failed".
Then i flash stock 4.2.2 with FastBoot - and all is ok. But when i again try to flash stock 4.2.2 with toolkit - im again got Booting failed.
That's all.
Ofcourse i have last ver. of toolkit.

Do you use toolkit for flashing stock 4.2.2?
Never, ever had a problem with Wug's toolkit, that thing is written brilliantly and it has saved my ass more times than I can care to count.
I was totally new to android development before I tried the nexus toolkit. Now I have a rooted n7 and prime, though I gotta say, rooting the prime took from me more time. I would suggest that you run the test-like driver check before attempting the one click magic.

The sequel of flashes you made is confusing for me but you should flash stock no matter the version 4.1 or 4.2 cuz you can get to latest by OTA updater.

In last update:
+Added MD5 hash checks before flashing for ALL stock images to avoid bad flashes
+Added selection to flash Radio images in the Flash Image section (gsm models)
Good, any1 can test?
No problem for me, I used last tookit to return stock rom 4.2.2 from cyanogenmod 10.0.1 with franco r65kernel.
I desired to return factory rom, because of low charging issue and fast battery drain.

More, I wanna tell you guys that battery so slow in charging issue is solved after flashed stockrom 4.2.2 from google server. Dear I am facing the same problem I tried to update it with Adnroid 4.3 official. First time it showed boot img failure. I again tried to flash it through Tool Kit and it gave me some error. I tried to restart bootloader and shut it down by pressing power button. After that nothing happens. Now when I connect it to my Computer it shows me unrecognized USB. Does this mean its not dead and there is any option to get it turn on?
It will be highly obliged if you could reply me with the solution. I am in Pakistan and we don't have any service center.

You should flash the stock bootloader, when connected, find this amongst the advanced utilities, and if the drivers are not working then use the driver diagnostic tool. You will not lose your apps doing this.
One other thing is that once your bootloader is returned to stock, you can use the Google Framework cache and data clearance mthod, described in other posts, to force the 4.3 Update. This really does work, and means that your apps and data remain intact.
so my nexus 7 (original) was getting laggy so i tried reflashing the factory image. It wasn't working, so i downloaded the nexus root toolkit and tried flashing the stock ROM. It erases the boot, cache, system, etc, but it keeps getting stuck on the "sending bootloader" part. It just says:
sending 'bootloader' <2100 KB>...
what should i do? is it my computer? i really don't want a bricked nexus. please help...
Try flashing in boot loader
Type : flash fastboot boot boot.img
in C:\Andriod or path of the adb

The solution here is at least in part not to use the toolkit so you can see for yourself what is going wrong. Download the appropriate factory image for your device and the Android platform tools, and then you can use fastboot to flash the relevant images over.
The bigger question is what state your device is in. Are you able to kick the machine into fastboot mode still?

I'm not "bullying" anyone, I'm pointing out that your post is based off of nothing but conjecture right now. If OP killed even fastboot then yes, his options are limited, but your post is inviting an even larger waste of time based on inadequate information-- which is exactly how these problems occur.

Thanks everyone. I got it to work. I should have mentioned that i did use flashboot initially but used the toolkit when it didn't work. In the end, I finally got fastboot to flash the image. Thanks again for replying.
OK...I have/had an stock nexus 7 running 4.4.2....until it decided to stop working last night. It was stuck on boot loop. So I decided to try a few things. I tried skipsoft toolkit and I followed a few instructions that other people said worked for them. To make a long story short, things went wrong. Im not sure how but they did. I'm not super knowledgeable about all this but I'd say I know a good amount. I rooted my OG Droid and have my GS3 rooted so I'm not completely in the dark about this but I feel like a idiot at this point. In the skipsoft menu/"command prompt", i was able to get TWRP working through skipsoft but it says I dont have a OS loaded. So apparently I erased everything and Im not sure how to get it back. I've been trying to load a boot img on it but its not letting me. Im lost and would love some help. Here is the screen on my next and also what Im getting on the step of "writing radio" in skipsoft. Anybody know anything about this? Where do I need to go from here? Thanks so much!

Hi, Topdroid01...
Looking at your first screenshot, where it says (amongst other things)....
Code:
.....
BASEBAND VERSION = N/A
.....
Or in other words, your Nexus 7 is WiFi only, and has no 'radio' 3G/GSM component.
...which may explain this 'FAILED' error message, in your second screenshot...
Code:
sending 'radio' (16384 KB )...
OKAY [ 1.983s]
writing 'radio'...
FAILED (remote: (BadParameter))
finished. total time: 2.005s
You can not flash a 'radio' baseband component to a device that doesn't support it.
Without more details, I suspect your skipsoft toolkit is attempting to flash the 'Nakasig' (WiFi/3G/GSM/mobile) factory image... instead of the correct 'Nakasi' factory image, for a WiFi only device.
You can download either from here.
So I strongly suspect, given the 'BASEBAND VERSION = N/A' reference in your first screenshot, that you have a WiFi only 'grouper' Nexus 7, and accordingly you need the 'Nakasi' factory image.
Hope this makes sense.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick! As for the skipsoft toolkit, I think Im using the correct version. Ive went back and checked a few times but Ill triple check when I get home. Hello Guys,
yesterday I restarted my Nexus 4, running the cm-13.0-20160520-NIGHTLY-mako. It stuck at the bootlogo, so I tried to reflash it in the twrp 2.8.7.0 recovery. But I got the error message "E:/ unable to mount /cache".
After that I was trying to solve this issue by wiping the cache, but I got the same error message -> The phone wasn't booting
From now on I did several things to solve my problem. I don't know the exact order.
- I've downloaded the Nexus Root Toolkit from WugFresh -> Tried to use the Flash Stock + Unroot Option with Soft-Bricked/Bootloop status enabled -> I choosed the 5.1.1 Factory Image -> In the cmd window, I get in every point the same error message "Falied (remote: flash write failure) -> I get the same message when I'm trying to manually flash each part of the factory image via fastboot
- Within the Toolkit I also tried to format cache, system and Userdata, but afther this I get the same error when trying to do the step before
- I think also used the Fastboot Flash options, but I'm not sure.
- After that I attempted to flash the cm13.zip via adb-sideload in TWRP. Here is a part from the error message I get:

- In TWRP the Internal Storage is shown with 0mb
- Currently only the bootloader is working fine and I also can get a fastboot and adb connection to the phone
-> Loading the recovery is only possible by booting a recovery image in fastboot
Can somebody tell me if it is possible to restore my Nexus 4 and how to do it?
Thank you in advance :fingers-crossed:
PS: I hope I mentioned all the important points. If some information is missing, feel free to ask me.
Did you try to manually flash the latest rom?
Did you try to flash a stock 4.2 rom?
Tried different USB cables and USB ports?

Thank you for your answer.
I tried to flash the newest cm13 in TWRP and with adb Sideload. I get the same error.
Also the 4.2 Stock rom doesn't work. Same problem as with the 5.1.1 factory image.
I also switched the cable and the USB ports, but it leads to the same error messages.
Try flashing the userdata.img file in fastboot. As soon as userdata finishes flashing, use the buttons to boot into recovery and perform a factory wipe. User the usedata.img file included with the stock ROM you flashed.
From what I see, your partitions got completely messed up. I reckon if it's fixable at all (assuming your chip ain't dead), the only thing that can fix it is fully reflashing everything via emergency mode. Now I can't seem to find the exact link, but I do know there was a thread on xda with instructions and everything. I'll keep digging around to see if I can find anything and then I'll link it here.

I get the same error message as always: Falied (remote: flash write failure)

In Meanwhile I also think that my partitions are messed up. I saw one thread that could help me (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/tutorial-how-to-unbrick-n4-t2347060), but some of the links are down.
Thank you for your help. :good:
Does the bootloader remain unlocked after rebooting? The emmc chip could be messed up and need replacement.

Unfortunately yes. After locking the bootloader via fastboot, the bootloader is marked as unlocked after rebooting.
Do I have to change the mainboard?
This confirms that the emmc chip is damaged and can only be fixed via a motherboard swap.
I had similar problems with two nexus 5 phones where I would unlock the bootloader but would always relock on reboot.

Ok. Doesn't sound very good.
Nevertheless I will try the method of nerotNS, if he finds the thread.

Aye that's the thread I've been talking about. And yeah, the links are down for quite a while, I reckon the OP doesn't maintain it anymore. Anyways I used the tool once, I found all the files by Googling for like 4 hours or so - the most difficult one being the .dll file and getting the program itself to run. I'd upload them to you but there were on my C disk on my main rig and that got wiped when I reinstalled Windows :S I'm sure the files are on the net even now tho, I remember getting the .dll file from some Chinese website, Chrome's translator gave me enough info to actually download the file. Once I got it up and running the flash was OK, I've tested the method from that thread myself, the only problem is getting the files from the links that are down. I wish you good luck in your search for them, I know what an awful feeling it is for your nexus to die, my mako is still my daily driver, still kickin' ass

I did however have to change the motherboard out, since, while the flash was ok, the chip was not, so it didn't help much. I had an issue with my /data partition where it was completely gone, and the while filesystem got messed up, the only thing I could boot to was bootloader and even that only while on charger. Eventually I swapped my motherboard with a friends who didn't need her nexus 4 anymore and now it's ok. I suggest you first attempt the method from that link and if that fails, then you should resort to getting a new motherboard, but imo only if you can get it either dirt cheap or in a way like I did. Caching out around 100$ for a new nexus 4 mb, with phones like nexus 5X 32Gb costing 300$ is not a good investment if you ask me.

I found all the necessary files for doing the method subscribed in the thread, but afther flashing the firmware nothing changed. Only thing that worked was the bootloader, everthing else still wasn't working.
Fortunately I had a broken Nexus 4 from a friend. So I switched both mainboards and my Phone is working again
Thank you for your help.
