[Q] Battery drains when plugged in - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a nexus 7 1st generation, the battery drains when it is plugged in so it doesnt charge, however, it does charge when turned off.
I have tried two different wires, I charge using the wall socket.
I have tried using different sockets but I still experience the same problem.
I haven't rooted it or anything
I've been on trouble shooting forums etc and have installed battery moinot widget, its says Status: discharging AC plugged in
Health: good
Temperature: 27°C
Voltage:3907
Capacity: 2854/4325
Battery flow: -612mA ( -14.15%/hr)
I know people usually ask if there are any apps using a lot of battery but right now 77%= screen, 4%= android system, the other is used up by other apps it only using about 2% each
I dont understand what it is because if it was something to do with the connection it wouldnt charge when off, but it does, just not when turned on
Would any factory reset help?
Any advice????

Mine has done that sporadically. With USB and dock. Usually a reconnect will get the current flowing. There's a thread here somewhere suggesting charging on the 500ma computer usb connecting and reconnecting a few times. I think it's the USB daughter board.

OK, can't find original thread. I suspect the battery is too hot and the charge delayed. Then once in deep sleep it never starts the charge. I'm going to set WiFi on while charging, hopeful a sync will wake it to resume charge.

I had the same problem with mine. However, for some reason when i used an HTC charger (with the usb to AC adapter) it was charging faster than losing charge. Once i changed chargers to one with a shorter but thicker cable, i never had the problem again, even with the brightness all the way up.
Hope this helps.

thats the same problem that i got when i first got my nexus 7
what fix it was a different charger and cable

the first battery charge on the HD is supposed to be a 8 or 10 or 12 hour charge? or on its not necesary
also the time used to charge it to the pc via usb cable is same as if ud plug it in the electric socket?
how long dose it take for u to charge ur phone.....
mine had 4 lines out of 10 and after 3 hours of it beeing conected to my pc and not in use its still got 4 lines....
opinions seem to vary on how long for 1st charge - personally I left mine on (mains) overnight, but that's just because I've had mobiles since year dot, and you used to have to!
But charging via PC doesn't seem to work as well as from the mains charger - depends a lot on the PC and how much juice it kicks out, some are a lot better than others.
Modern phones/batteries do not need "overnight" charging. My Touch HD even came with a little note saying you don't need to charge for 16hrs/overnight. Just charge until it's full...
Better to charge with wall socket because not all USB ports provide enough current. Some can't charge through the USB port while some can.
I can charge through my notebook but it takes a lot longer than the wall socket.
thanks bouth of u for the fast anwsers....
When I set WiFi settings to max performance, my HTC HD will not charge at all, actually it will loose charge during night, display is off, just WiFi, GSM and GPS is active, connected to provided wall charger. Back side of phone is really hot, I measured over 54°C
Problems charging.
guys(and lady's) Just got my HD. been running it for some time to drain the battery, while on my laptop the battery starts charging. I wanted to drain the battery to give it a good charge afterwords so I turnd off the option of charging while unit is active( in batt. menu) but When I got to 5% batt.cap. an tried to charge the unit (batt. option enabled again) it doesn't charge. now my batt. is empty and can't get in the phone. while on power my battery charging led gives a couple of seconds of charge indication then it turns off.
Any suggestions or is my battery dead. (charging unit is oke, and when on power the HD does give sufficient power to the battery (measured with mulitmeter) thx guys edit - Als when on power green and amber lights blink.
Could that be that your battery is too hot ? There is some safety protection that prevent the batyery to charge when it is over a temperature level.
battery not charging properly
My touch hd not charge the battery more then 50% i change the battery but same as before.
any suggestion

Not sure what's going on there, but try draining the battery to almost empty each time and then turn your phone off before charging it. Do this a few times and see if it helps. Mine took about a month beforeit came good.
Dear samlives
Thanks for helping
I will try it

[Q] DroidX will only sustain charge level, but not charge up!

I am trying to figure out why my DroidX will not charge fully all of the sudden. I plugged it in yesterday to a wall charger for about 2 hours when the battery was at 50%, can back after 2hrs, and it was still at 50% even though it showed the charging icon the whole time. I rebooted it, and plggeed it into my computer's USB port, and set the USB option to "Charge only". Came back this morning, after it sat there for 6 hours and same thing - it is just maintaining the current battery level, but not charging it higher.
I have only owned it for a week, and the only change between now and when it was charging properly was that I installed a wireless tethering app, however, that runs on demand, and it has not been open or running. WiFi and GPS are also completely turned off.
Anyone else experienced this? I assume unless I keep it plugged in 24/7 now, it will eventually die all the way down!!
p.s. - I also tried letting it charge while it was completely powered off, but same thing. Shows that it is charging but just maintains current level.

this is not normal ,while in the wall charger it should charge all the way and the same on usb but just slower ,if this problem persist i would bring it to VZW and get a knew batt or phone or both since you have only had it a week
It may not be the phone or the battery. It's probably a faulty DC adapter which is not delivering the proper amperage. I just had this problem with my Slingbox. It would light up but the lights looked dim and I couldn't connect to it. A new adapter fixed it.
(Edit) I just reread your post and noticed you are charging it on your PC's USB port. Try the wall charger or another PC. Some PCs don't put out enough juice to charge.

This is somewhat true. The phone should charge with less power regardless of the source. You notice this most on say a USB hard drive and this is why you have y cables sometimes on the drives that take more power. Does the computer you happen to be charging it on happen to be a Laptop?
FYI - I charge from a desktop PC that has a 1000W corsair powersupply and hig end motherboard.
With that asie though, I was able to get the charging back - works fine after I did a hard reset. Most everything was backed up via Google, so all I had to do was rearrange my icons on home screen and change a few android settings.
I still have all the same apps, so I do not know what caused it. Whatever, it is fine now, but if it happens again I will take it in - I do not want to have to hard reset every few weeks. (I have the $6 a month full protection plan, even if I lose it, it gets replaced)

Charging issues.

I've noticed that when I leave the phone plugged in overnight it sometimes just seems to stop charging at a random point somewhere throughout the night and I'll wake up with a phone that is only at 80%, 65%, etc.. battery. It isn't fully charging and then just being drained again either, it just randomly stops charging. It will recognize that a charger is plugged in and even says that it is charging but the percentage indicator in the Settings pulldown doesn't move. This doesn't happen every night and it has never happened when I charge the phone during the day. I assume it only happens at night because I'm not at my desk using it. I can also assume that the device isn't taking 8 hours to go from 35% battery to 75%, it doesn't charge that slowly. Any ideas?
P.S Rooted but on stock ROM

I'll give it a shot. Thank you.
I tried it with a different cable last night and it did the same thing. Forgot to mention I'm charging it through my computer.

I would try the charging cable that came with it and if it still does the same thing I would say you have a problem with your phone.

Yeah, I have been using the cable that came with it. I've tried two different ones. I will try to see if it happens when charged through wall outlet.
Sorry for double post. Couldn't figure out how to attach image to an edit.
I looked at my battery settings and this is what I noticed. It looks like my phone is charging all the way up during the evening and then draining but the charging isn't kicking back or something. The huge gap in screen on time was when I was sleeping and there was no use of the device but battery is steadily draining.

As stated in previous post, I have not. That is the plan when I get home.
I have tried it through the wall charger for the past few nights and it charged just fine. I also tried it through the same cable that my N7 and Gnex were charged with and it still happened. I also tried various USB ports. Any ideas?

Is it possible the computer is sleeping and no longer powering the USB ports?
I had exactly the same problem for one night.
But it can't be a problem with my Notebook because
my Galaxy S charged just fine.
Probably due to power saving options on your computer, be they USB power saving settings or sleep related. If you want to charge faster you should definitely use the wall charger, USB charging is painfully slow for me... if i am using the device, load can exceed the incoming current and the phone will still discharge. Moral of the story > USB charging = useless.

It really isn't a matter of slow charging. I'm charging it overnight so the speed at which it charges doesn't matter to me. As long as it is charged when I wake up. I've been using the same computer to charge my phones/tablets/cameras for two years and I've never had a problem. I'm not even using the device though, it is at night when I'm sleeping.
I have the same problem all of a sudden. Happened twice in the past week, never happened for months before. I never charge from a computer, always with the provided adapter and cable from the wall. A few hours into the night, before the phone is at 100% (varies from 70-90%), it just stops charging. Battery graph looks very similar to the one in this thread already posted.
I wonder which device switches the current off, the phone, or the wall adapter. I would have guessed the phone, and if that is correct swapping the wall adapter won't do anything.
Or you can use Fast Charge from Google Play and flash Franco Kernel.
Then you'll be able to switch from USB Charge to AC Charge by charging with your computer.
However, the battery will heat and you may consume its life, so do not do that too often, only when necessary if you expect using your phone very long times as i do, i just change phone every 5 years or more, depending of my needs.
Also, i noticed than USB Charging slowing down the charge at around 80%, but still charging, i read with Battery Monitor Widget, and i seen it will gives minus ampere.
I almost forgot, you may also calibrate your battery, the first time, charge it to 100%, then remove the file "batterystats.bin" from /data/system or wipe it threw Recovery, that will ensure you to use your battery to 100% next time.
Mine seems to stop charging at 100% and go back down also. Mine usually is between 95-100% when I wake up though. Is that just how this phone works to protect the battery? I've never noticed this in any other phone I've had.

[Q] Charging takes for ever.

I don't actually suffer from battery life problems like some other owners. My problem is that it takes for ever for my phone to charge. My phone has been charging over USB attached to my computer for 8 hours and is only at 83%. When it's attached to the mains it's pretty much the same story. I'm not running any apps. 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth are turned on though.
How can I resolve this problem?

well, if plugged into a computer/usb, itll take much longer to charge. are you using the original usb chord? when plugged into a wall charger, how long does it take?
Current draw is about 700mah on average. Battery size is 2100mah. So it should take 3 hours to charge with the wall charger.
USB is another story. If you charge and surf at the same time it will be consuming battery rather than charging.
The problem seems to occur when I don't use the original USB wall charger. Are not all USB chargers the same? When I use the original charger, I don't seem to have this problem.
If WiFi was left on while charging on a computer USB port, would this effect the charging speed?

Galaxy S4 & Prolonged Navigation Use

I own a Galaxy S2. I have tried it using for navigation many times only to find that the battery discharges fully within 2 hours even if the phone is connected to a car charger. I used to think may be its because my car charger doesn't provide enough current to maintain the charge. But recently I found out the culprit. After around 20 minutes of use, the phone battery starts heating up, and it stops charging. I verified this with CPU-Z. It clearly shows battery overheated, power supply connected and not charging.
I was wondering if S4 also has similar issue. Has anybody used it for more than 2 hours with Google Navigation continuously while connected to car charger?

The most I have used it for is about an hour and half, and while the phone did heat up, it did continue to keep charging while connected to my in-car charger (just a cheap one). I can't remember whether the charger was able to keep up with the discharge though, I think it did. I was driving in bright sunlight, so I had screen brightness on max throughout that time.

I've found that the USB cable can have a big impact on the charging current. I had the same problem with my car charger not keeping the phone charged, even though I was using a 2A charger. When I changed the USB cable I managed to quadruple the charging current (from 300ma to 1200ma) and solved the problem (I measured the charging current using the Galaxy Charging Current Lite app).

In my case, I believe it was not because of the charging current or cable. I was trying with a car charger capable of charging a laptop, using the wall charger and cable which came with the phone. When the mobile stopped charging, I checked in CPU-Z app. The app was clearly showing status as "power supply connected, not charging and battery overheated". If I unplug the USB cable and connect it back, it will start charging again!
To make sure that I didn't miss anything, I will try with the app you suggested.
Just to update: The Galaxy Charging Current Lite doesn't seem to work with my Galaxy S2. It doesn't show any value.
