1. 1.4gb RAM is nothing. If your phone starts force closing, something must be out of place here.
2. You mentioned you entered recovery mode and it was in Chinese, meaning that you got a fake/clone. A picture would be handy here for verification.

Ok So I had been using an app to change the pixel denisty on my Galaxy S4 (gt-i9505) but it wasn't permanent cause it reset the density after a reboot. So I downloaded a different app that had the alleged ability to change it permanently (until you change it back). So I changed it to 300 (same density I had been using on the previous app) and then it restarted my phone. For a while I was just getting the "Samsung Galaxy" screen, then it goes black and vibrates slightly every now and then. Then I now either get the Kies failed firmware update screen if I just try to turn it on as normal. But I can put it into download mode. What the F do I do?

I was on stock. Used motochopper method to root.
What was your original reason for wanting to do this?
If you can put it to download mode then the safe thing to do is Odin back to stock.

It fails at writing the nand every damn time.
Ok sorry for double post but I fixed it. It was a driver issue (as I suspected) because windows insists in checking it's ****ty windows updates for drivers instead of just installing the ones you already have. Long and short of it is I put the phone into download mode, disconnected my computer from the internet, plugged the phone in, everything installed fine and installed the phone as the right device not as a ****ing modem. Then ran odin 3.07 and flashed the stock rom back to the phone. I still have all my apps and user data too. Just had to re-root the phone and I did that with the odin method this time instead of the motorboat method.
I was trying to reinstall the firmware after having issues with service mode and followed the odin procedure to do so but it came up failed and the phone as not booted up since.
The phone if just powering on say it need to run a recovery through Kies but that does not see the phone so no joy there, I can get it to download mode but thats about it Odin see the phone but fails every time I try to install firmware. Ive note in gray on the phone it says Write protection enabled

I have the Original 4.2.2 Stock Firmware for you. I sent you a Pm awaiting your response. The links will be sent to you after the response.
I need Major help with my phone. So here's the run down.
Starting on a Tuesday my phone started acting funny, it would get to the AT&T logo and stop, but then if I removed the battery and hold down the power button for roughly 20 seconds and start it up it would come on without any problems that I could see. Through the week it got worse, and by that I mean that it would restart on it's own, randomly. By that Sunday pulling the battery and holding the power button no longer did anything and from what I understand it is stuck in a boot loop.
I should have started by asking all of you, but unfortunately for me I tried fixing it myself by searching for the answers.
This is where my phone sits. It was rooted, but there is no back up. I can get to the Android system recovery. I foolishly did a reset and cleared my phone (I have all of my info and pics backed up so I'm not worried about that). My computer does not recognize my phone unless I go into the ADB setting in recovery mode and as far as I can tell the computer just knows that something is connected through USB but can't quite tell what it is. Kies has been installed on said computer recently so I have the newest Samsung drivers. I have a 32 gb sd card for my phone if that helps any. I forgot to mention that my phone is running Version 4.3 of the S4 software.
I am a total noob when it comes to these types of problems so please help me.
Do you know what firmware version you're on? Did you do a factory reset in recovery? Kies is junk you're probably going to have to use Odin. But even that may not work based on your description of the problems.

I am running Version 4.3. I only installed Kies to make sure I had the right driver, but you're right, Odin doesn't see my phone. I did do a factory reset in recovery, hopefully I didn't completely screw myself.

Help, I downgraded from 2.3 to 2.2 for various reasons, but now when I try to upgrade again I just get the pink screen ,if I try using the option from settings/storage,it says key data couldn't be backed up , the installation will stop. Also if I boot into the system it runs fine for about a minute then locks up completely so I can't even continue to use it in 2.2 can anyone advise ?

Try to put the 2.3 dload folder to a sd card, then remove the battery, plug in a USB cable to the computer and the phone, volume up+down+power (if I remember right lol). See if it will update that way.
no, that's the usual way I've been flashing it, I can get to the image folder ,but it won't boot into recovery either

Odd. Maybe try to flash the ICS pink screen unlocker? I had weird issues at some point too, then I flashed that and the problems went away. Afterwards flash ICS.
Just tried that, still no luck,it doesn't even get to the unpacking screen,it just stays pink. beginning to think its beyond repair

I think it's still possible to fix it. I was loosing hopes too, but I messed around with it anyway and got it working. Just try different dload's, different methods and maybe you'll get it running. Maybe other users will have some ideas too.

Hi there!
I think when you upgrade from software menu there is an option for data back-up.
Uncheck this option and the error should go away.
Also what do you mean with this: "Also if I boot into the system it runs fine for about a minute then locks up" ?
What do you mean it locks up? Touchscreen is not responsive for example?
My suggestions:
1) Do a factory reset and then check if you can upgrade
2) Try re-installing your recovery(use cwm 5.0.27 by geno for best compatibility) or even replace the whole image folder with the froyo one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2146856
Your phone is not beyond repair that's for sure. Since it boots fine.

I haven't noticed an option for data backup, will check again later on. And yes when it locks up touch screen becomes unresponsive and none of the buttons respond either. Also when I try to enter recovery ,both custom and stock, it displays the kernel logo then vibrates with a black screen for a second then back to kernel logo and continues to boot.

Ok guys,I copied over the stock image folder and now it works ok, however I still can't upgrade from froyo. At least I can use it again though so thanks for your help, its much appreciated. Incidentally, there wasn't an option to back up data when upgrading, but that error has now gone, except it now just reboots instead, so I will just keep trying.

Used ADM to wipe it as I switched to a N6, but now the phone is stuck in a bootloop of "installing system update" and can't boot into recovery or download.
I have the stock ROM to flash... I just can't find a way to flash it through Odin since I can't get into download.

Mmm, not sure I want to mess with the hardware just yet. is ADB completely out of the question?
couldn´t you use the same ADM to fix it? I haven´t used it but it sure will have some options to that problem.
Now you can also use findmymobile.samsung (website) and wipe the cellphone maybe that will help. (it´s just and idea of course)
