[Q] adjust brightness just by swiping top of screen? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my old s3 many ROMs had a feature whereby you can adjust brightness just by swiping left or right on the top of the screen. Im running alliance on my s5 now but do any other ROMs or apps give this ability?
Many thanks

Sure, I see that tweaks like that all of the time. e.g. MX player pro does the same thing, but the swipe area is delineated as the left hand of the screen. Swiping on the right hand side adjusts the volume instead.
.

I'll look it up. Cheers

Anyone else noticed that you can change screen brightness from the status bar?

If you start to slide the status bar down, and then slide your finger to the left or the right on the actual status bar, the screen brightness will adjust.
Sliding all the way to the right will give you brightest, and sliding all the way to the left will give you lowest setting for brightness, and there are some intermediate settings depending on how far to the left/right you go.
My i9000 does not have this feature.
Yes I have this and I use it often

This phone gets more awesome every day!
is it really the status bar or a swype on either direction at the top part of the screen
i remember something about controlling screen brightness by a diagonal swype from the top of the screen

I'm sure that your phone does have this feature, but you have to take the screen brightness out of automatic for it to work.
awesome....something new everyday!
you dont have to slide down, just swype across the notification bar, that is such a simple but cool feature
Lol im gonna start swiping everything on my screen next thing you know you swipe and a LED Flash shutter opens in the back

I'm surprised more people haven't noticed this feature, and Samsung has been so quiet about it.
It doesn't seem to work for me either. I've tried pulling the bar down just a little or all of the way.
You have to have it on manual brightness setting, and pull the status bar down just a few mm so that the grey part that would usually be the bottom edge of the status bar is fully exposed, but is right at the top of the screen, then swipe either left or right on the status bar.
I hope that makes sense

Screen Brightness Changes by itself

I have a problem where the screen brightness varies by itself without any input from me. I have turned off automatic brightness and set the screen brightness at the lowest level in an attempt to save battery life. However, when I use the phone at a later time I would recognize a difference in the screen brightness. When I go to check it in settings, the screen brightness level is set at a different level.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Go into settings sound and brightness and uncheck the power saving option at the bottom and ofcourse make sure u uncheck auto brightness.

also i read in another post that the TouchWiz user interface has a built in feature that will adjust brightness when you swip your finger at the top of the screen, making it brighter when you swipe left to right and dimming the screen when you swipe right to left.

That must be it! Thanks! I must have swiped left/right on the top of the screen without realizing it. Kind of annoying for them to sneak in a feature like that. I can see it being useful but I prefer the power control widget. Any idea how I can disable that feature of touchwiz?
getting ridd of touchwiz was the first thing i did when i got my epic so i dont really know much about it .

How did you get rid of touchwiz? I installed Launcherpro over it but that doesn't do away with touchwiz.
There was a thread on here for that from what i can remember, i cant look for it right at this moment because im at work but you should be able to find it yourself. Search for "removing touchwiz UI" if you cant find it go to google (it might have been a diff forum/Blog it was a few days ago).
You guys can change your home screen launcher, but you won't be able to get rid of TouchWiz until a vanilla ROM comes out. The ability to adjust adjust your brightness via swipe on the notification bar is - for better or worse (better imho) - not dependant on you using the TW launcher.

If you root the epic, you CAN manually uninstall all touchwiz packqages to remove the ui...
That notification taskbar swipe is pretty handy tho... thanks to whoever shared it... I like to keep my screen dim for the most part... but that is soooo much easier to use when, say I go outside and need to adjust quickly! It even works in landscape mode! Nice!

Root your Epic, download Root Explorer from market (worth the price), make sure you already have Launcher PRO running, then go to running applications and force close TouchWiz30Launcher then go to root explorer > system > app (make sure you mount it as r/w) > and delete TouchWiz30Launcher.apk and .odex, then reboot and that's it.
You can also use terminal app if you're familiar with commands.

That... is... awesome! Did not know that. Guess I can get rid of the brightness app since adjusting the brightness through the menu on the fly was painfully boring.

Move home and back button?

Is there any option to move the home back and app switcher buttons? I have to stretch to reach them, is there anyway to move them so they are on the side like the menu button?
Agreed. Personally I'd like to see the controls fixed to the bottom left as they are for most other tablets. Would also much prefer the status icons switched to the bottom right, where there's much more screen space to make them bigger
I agree with you. I'm a Xoom user since it came out. This is one modification of the OS that I think is a step backwards.
It's because the Nexus 10 uses the "Phablet" UI instead of a Tablet UI. Wait a few weeks for some custom Roms to come out. Someone for sure will cook something up
Completely agree... keeping in the phablet mode may be ok for 7" devices, or even in portrait mode, but in landscape mode, those buttons are not easily reached with the thumb making it very awkward
Hi,
still nothing new with moving/positioning these buttons?
Root -> flash AOKP rom mr robinson -> go to settings -> rom control-> tablet ui -> choose tablet ui
(At least , this is what i do )
Find more settings there to move wathever you want
( write a pm to mr robinson if you want more customisation in the future )

I have gone to a full screen display and replaced the buttons using a combination of:
full!screen+ which removs the top and botton bars plus allows me access to notifications as a popup from one of the four screen corners
LMT Launcher's PIE to which I add the standard "home back and app switcher buttons ... etc". It can do so much more besides just that. PIE overlays any app by thumbing over a specific side of the display and auto disappears when not used. It even overlays during video playback without stopping the video.
Definitely read the documentation in the LMT Launcher post, as that and a little time trying the various options will really enhance your experience.
After using these two apps for more than a month I feel having the top and bottom bars are a waste of screen space.
I am running rooted Stock 4.2.2.
Yep there are lots of ROMs now that enable tablet UI for those who want the buttons on the left side. And some ROMs that do not have the option enabled have a tabletUI mod that can be flashed to it, like Sentinel 4.60

Partial Cracked Screen Fix (without replacing)

The bottom of my N7 screen cracked but the device is still very usable. The bottom half inch will not respond to touch, but everything above that point works just fine! I'm hoping for a way to expand my navigation bar size, or bump it up to leave my screen blank under it.. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I have some $ in PayPal as a thanks. Any help as in a ROM that allows a Nav Bar Resize.. A way to move it to the top of my tablet screen... Some way I can put a google search bar under it or anything to waste that space. Thanks for ideas, hoping to save my N7 and keep it usable without having to rotate it everytime I need that portion of my screen!

I could have sworn I've seen navbar mods somewhere. You could always consider using PIE controls, however, if you want to remap them to the left/right screen edges.
Thanks for the quick reply. Pie Controls is a very useful work around for now. The app would be amazing if it let me choose exactly where on the screen I could pull up the navigation bar, but even without that option it is a great help!
I've seen some Mods but all of them seem to shrink the Bar, not enlarge it.
The reason I want to extend the stock navigation bar isn't just to be able to touch the buttons but it also pushes all opened apps, my home screen, etc up past that point that is cracked... So while playing a game or in my options menus I would still be able touch the bottom of my screen, just above the navigation bar (which I can't do now.) Basically, the top of the Bar is the bottom of my touch screen and it isn't high enough for me to use the entire screen =(

LMT Launcher is a pie control interface. It allows you to open from anywhere on the left or right and you can setup gestures as well with it to do the navbar functions. Look it up here on xda.

[Q] Any way to move the notification panel to the bottom of screen(similar to IOS)

Is there any way show the notification panel by swiping from the bottom of the screen instead of the top(default)?
basically is there anything that will allow me to view the expanded notification panel without having to pull down from the status bar?
You haven't gotten any responses because it isn't possible. End of story. New to Android?

Nah but upgrading from a galaxy s4 that has been on 4.4 for 3 years(custom rom) With the new galaxy, its harder to reach the status bar when using one hand.
I agree with you with this one... The navigation bar is a bit of a pain to reach, Although pinning apps to edge bar seems to work OK for me.

then use the one hand operation to make it easier. that's what it is there for. tap the home button three times. that will make the screen smaller, and easy for one hand operation. if you don't have it setup, then go into settings, and advanced settings.
You should try the notification edge panel I bought it straight away then i realised I could of bought the edge notification panel from playstore with the reward app I had.
No way to move the notification pull down itself, but using Nova Launcher Prime (the pay version), you can set up a screen gesture to open the notification shade. You can assign to a downward swipe (starting anywhere on the screen), or a double tap, or other options. Unfortunately, I think this only works from the home page, not from within another app.

Yup. best answer!
I've been using this for years. Still not the same as having a smaller phone though.
Swipe down for notifications, swipe up to sleep.

I should have posted an update but found a work around.
Using All In One Gestures app, I can swipe up from the home button and it will expand the notification panel. This works in any app unlike the Nova option.
Hi, you can use fooView, it allows to expand notification just pulling down the floating icon down, and other actions like back, home, recent, etc. with just one hand.
