[Q] No audio (speaker/headphones), no microphone - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I just got my hands on a Nexus with a strange problem (strange meaning I can't find a thread with similar problem, so I am creating this one ).
It can be hardware related, but there are some strange symptoms, so I wanted to ask here first whether anyone has seen this before.
Problem: Anything sound related doesn't work. Loudspeaker, headphones, microphone, no sound, not even noise. (I haven't been able to test bluetooth audio though) On the other hand, when I connect the headphones, nexus recognizes them just fine (I get the headphones volume settings etc.).
I find it hard to believe that speakers, jack and microphone broke at the same time, so the issue is probably somewhere in the sound chip, or, it is software related. That's why I'm asking here and not running directly to Asus OS is up to date on KitKat 4.4.4, I tried several factory resets and cache partition wipes. I also tried older android versions just to make sure it's not KitKat's fault, but I experience same behaviour on 4.3 and 4.2.
Any suggestions?

Weird Audio Issue

I've been having a weird audio issue with my Nexus 7 and was wondering if anyone else was having it. I search before starting this thread and couldn't find anything similar, which leads me to believe the answer is 'no', but thought I would ask anyway.
So my N7 was one of the first to be released. For a couple months I've had no major issues. A little screen lifting, but not enough to make me send it back. Some issues with the screen (what looks like burn in, but goes away) which has been heavily reported, but again, I can live with it. Both of those issues are well known and common, but this one just started up.
Every so often, when my N7 has been sitting idle and in standby mode for a while and I unlock it, I hear a "click" sound from the speaker. It normally makes that sound, but on occasion it sounds weird and clipped. When this happens, I lose audio. The only way to regain it is to either reboot the device, or manually lower the sound to zero, wait a few seconds, and then raise it up again. The latter method usually works, but once in a while I have to do it multiple times before the audio is restored. When the audio stops, it doesn't matter if it's the built in speakers or headphones - nothing.
This problem seems to only occur right after I wake it up. In other words, if I'm using it actively and I have sound, the sound works fine.
Again, this problem only started occurring about a month or so ago, and is only sporadic. At first, I thought it might have something to do with a new app I downloaded, but I eliminated that variable.
It's not a major problem, but it does get annoying every so often.
My N7 is stock firmware with a custom kernel (Motley) and rooted (obviously) with CWM recovery.
The logs don't indicate any issues. And since the audio comes back with me turning it off/on (usually), it seems more like a software issue.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?
Also, when the sound is working properly, it sounds great. No static or distortion or anything like that.
I have the same problem, at first i thought it was because of the kernels so i switch kernels from stock to motley then now i am on clemsyn. I do not know whether it is a software or hardware problem because my speakers sound perfectly alright, except the symptoms which you described.
My case is then sometimes when i unlock it, the normal click sound on unlock might be distorted and then for a period of time there will be no sound. The quick way to solve it is to plug in a headphone and then pull it back out, this will get the sound back immediately OR i can just wait for a while and the sound will be back. Again because of the speaker not having any other distortion during normal music playback, this might actually be a software problem, but it seems not many pple have documented this behaviour so hardware problem is also likely.

I think it could be a hardware defect with ours. Since you are the only other person to report the exact same symptoms, it seems to be rare. In my case, it occasionally happens even with the headphones in, so I don't think it's a speaker issue - more likely a sound card problem. If it was software, I think it would be much more commonly reported. Oh well.... Weird that it only started happening about a month or two after I owned it.
juz an update on my nexus 7 audio issue, i recently just flash franco kernel and the audio issue seemed to go away completely. i amnot sure whether its the overclocking or the undervolting that caused the problem but i am glad it is gone. Juz FYI.
I have a similar situation where the sound stops working randomly. It's rare, but maybe once a day. The volume buttons remain high but there is no sound. I have to reboot for the sound to come back. I am on Kaos Droid 3.8 Beta, with the Clemsyn Elite Battery Saving kernel.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 RC2 persistent headphones microphone woes... please help!

Hello XDA
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Forgive me in advance if I lack XDA etiquette or am posting in the wrong area.
Many of you CM users are familiar with [and have suffered through] the headphones call audio bug that plagued 10.1/10.2 nightlies for some time back in August, which have been allegedly fixed. The bug involved broken headphone microphone ability; one can hear call/non-call audio coming from the headphones when plugged in, and the headphone microphone will work with out-of-call applications (i.e. sound recorder, etc.), though when in-call the microphone is rendered useless and does not work. The actual phone microphone fortunately remains working, so the caller can just barely hear you to say, "Hey, can you put your phone up to your face? You sound muffled." This results in me having to hold the actual phone close to my mouth in order to use headphones, which defeats the purpose of headphones entirely.
The problem seems to be fixed on CM 10.2 nightlies when I was running them, though for stability purposes I prefer to revert to CM 10.1.3 RC with ktoonsez AT&T kernel. I always flash clean, wipe the cache/davlik appropriately, etc. Everything else with this current setup is phenomenal, save this damned headphone microphone issue. I do a lot of multitasking when on the phone and this is a crippling defect.
I've searched long and hard for an answer to this issue but have ended empty-handed and am going crazy. It seems most people are no longer experiencing this issue. Am I the only one left? Does anyone else have the same issue?
Any help would be infinitely appreciated!
I have a similar problem. If my headphones aren't already plugged into the phone when a call comes in and I then plug them in, the other person cannot hear me at all. I usually have to restart the phone with the headphones plugged in to get them to work on calls.
Sgs4 mic issue with cm10.1
Yes I have the same problem and couldn't find any solution either.
M on 10.1.3 RC2 same as you and this problem bothered me ever since I installed cm10.1 nightly back in August.
I will do a clean wipe (including nand erase) and install latest Samsung stock os, and see if this solve few of issues (I have problem with my gas as well).

[Q] Strange behaviour of g2 display and audio

Hello guys,
Since a week my g2 has been behaving strange.
The audio has completely stopped working be it from the loudspeakers or earpiece. Even the mic is not working. Although, when i connect the headset, the audio in the headphones and the mic of the headphones work. At this time i tried rerouting radio to loudspeakers and they didnt work.
Since this issue the display switches off when i make a call and doesn't come back on till the person on the opposite side cuts the call.
It has made my device completely useless. I tried flashing cm12 nightly and then flash a modem according to the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/lg-g2-sound-flashing-custom-rom-fix-t2810492
This also failed to work and the same issue continued.
I was running stock 4.4.2 when this issue happened
What do you guys recommend
Thanks

Note 3 car bluetooth issues

I have a Kenwood excelon DDX793 radio with BT audio and phone. Two problems:
- I experience stuttering while playing music, and sometimes it's so bad that the music app crashes.
- I can't hear anyone nor can they hear me when I make or receive a phone call. It does show an incoming call and I can make an outgoing call from the radio, but anything audio related, forget it. If I do talk loudly next to the microphone, while listening to my land line phone, I do hear a very low pitched sound. Picture and old Walkman cassette player running out of batteries.
I've searched on the net, but I couldn't find anything really useful, or I might be using the wrong wording.
It's a Note 3 SM-N900W8, factory unlocked. I did not try the stock ROM , as I went straight to rooting it and using a custom ROM. I've tried two stable ROMs, but both do the exact same thing. Could I be missing out on a firmware update?
I've tried safe mode, factory resets, different ROMs, as mentioned above, but no changes. I can live with a bit of stutter, but if I can't hear the other individual at the other end, that's a huge problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Got it fixed. Used a stock Lollipop ROM and it resolved the BT issues. Now it's my hot keys that don't work. Oh this is rich...

In call speakerphone issue on Android 8.1

Hi,
I never had any issues with my 6P, but out of nowhere, observing since few days that my speakerphone whether be in regular phone call or whatsapp call is not working. However, audio plays fine otherwise in apps like youtube etc. I tried doing factory reset, and reflashing 8.1 stock, still didn't help.
I tried going to 8.0 Dec firmware but ended up in bootloop issue(which I never saw otherwise), so re-installed 8.1 Jan package.
This is driving me nuts not being able to use the device for whatsapp kinda calls.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
anyone please?
Do you mean people can't hear you or you can't hear them on speaker phone? If other apps are working, it's not speaker but mic problem.
I can't hear on speakerphone, others hear well.

I would do a complete wipe including internal (back up everything.) Then flash latest 8.1 with bootloader, vendor and radio through fastboot. If still doesn't work must be issue with hardware .
I have the same phone and the same problem. I doubt it's a hardware problem. I don't have a solution either as I've tried many things.
Same issue with mine, they haven't missed off the lines of code again, on speaker phone audio is only coming from 1 speaker.
I still have this issue, has anyone managed to resolve this.
Same issue here. I thought it was Bluetooth related until I tested it today with Bluetooth off. When making or receiving calls sometimes audio will not work at all thigh speaker phone or regular call audio out.
A temporary fix for me is turning speakerphone on and off a couple times then audio is usually recovered.
I noticed this typically happens when audio interruptions occur for instance your listing to Spotify via speaker or Bluetooth and then make a call causing an audio Interruption to switch to call audio from media audio.
Definitely not a hardware issue and very annoying hoping to have a phone for more than 2 years without so many issues.
