Soft brick help - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I was trying to use Odin 3.07 to flash my Verizon GS 4 to stock. I was having an issue where I had no call audio sporadically and factory resets weren't curing it. I am in download mode but everytime I try to flash, one of two errors comes up: 1. fails after aboot, or 2. Doesn't get that far, and fails during setupConnection .
I've tried numerous different md5 files and tar files. I was running 4.4.2 stock but rooted.

Odin Stuck at Factoryfs.rfs - Can't Odin to Stock

Pulling what little hair I haver left out at this point. 8 hours now, and Odin is stuck during factoryfs.rfs. Never makes it past this point.
I've tried every trick I've come across in XDA and elsewhere (re-starting odin / unplugging & replugging / device drivers / all versions of Odin / etc)
I even tried Heimdall (can't find boot loader files anywhere to plug in to Heimdall Frontend.
I'm lost now, with seemingly every idea tried and failed. Phone will not boot, as Odin fails without finishing.
Anyone faced similar and come through it?
I can get into DL mode just fine...I've googled everything I can think of.
I had that happened before with odin 1.2. Updated to 1.7 and everything worked afterward.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
yeah used both versions
sometimes using a different computer solves the problem for me.
Had this happen too. In my case switching to a USB port in the back of my PC rather than one of the ports on the front of my PC case fixed the issue. Try Odin'ing with your other USB ports?
Finally got it working...had a corrupted JFD file...replaced and all is well. Thx for the help
having same problem
I'm having the same problem. What is a corrupted JFD file and how do I fix it?
Ran into the same issue. I checked "Phone Bootloader Update" in odin 1.82 and it finally worked. Not sure why, but I'll take it.

I finally found what the problem was, my stock tar file was not completely downloaded and was 180MB vs 291MB what it should have been. Redownloaded, tried again and it worked perfect. To those that still have the problem, try re downloading the files instead of trying the same one over and over, worked for me ;-)
hi i use to have the same problem. what i do is this.
1) Installed Odin and all the other files in a folder in the root directory of my computer (C:\). Don't know if this helps at all, just covering everything I've done.
2) Took battery out, SIM out and SDcard out.
3) put battery back in....leave phone off.
4) Start Odin using administrative
5) Now here is where I'm different: Hold down Volume up & down at the same time, don't press power.
6) While holding down the volume buttons together, plug the USB (already plugged into computer) into the Phone (Vibrant in my case). Should automatically go into Download mode, no fancy timing here.
7) Select your PIT and PDA (TAR) files
8) Click start....should immediately jump past cache.rfs
9) Leave it all alone until you get the green pass in Odin.
i really dont know if some of the points are important but it work.. i wish that can help you.

I have been having the same problem here. I am only able to enter download mode, my phone won´t boot, not even cwm.
I have been trying to install a new rom via Odin but it gets stuck at factoryfs.rfs , I have tried everything even all said in this thread it still wont work. Also tried checked and downloaded several times the files as you mentioned.
Please, if anyone knows what else to try.
PS: I also tried installing other roms rather than darkys resurrection and they would all get stuck in some point during the installation via Odin, really wierd, please help!!!
Dude, you'd be better off starting a new thread in the Q&A section.
Secondly, do a lot more reading. You cannot flash custom ROMs with Odin. Odin is just used for flashing back to stock.

Actually if you read up on DarkyRom, the Darky team makes Odin .tar's of their base roms. So yes you can Odin a custom rom. It's actually easy to make a Odin tar ball of any Samsung TWiz based rom on your phone.

What files are you flashing?? Are you flashing with or without a .pit?
Here is a guide from XDA for Flashing. Its easy to follow and ive never had an issue with it. Good Luck.

I just plugged my usb into the back and i got past it. sat for the last 2 hours troubleshooting.....

Odin not working.....

So what if Odin doesnt work? what do you do to get your phone back operational? Ive tried 4 different md5 and tar files, the same pit file and still nothing. it fails either at recovey section or in the factoryrs section. is it time to get a new phone?
No, it's time to use a non-stock USB cable (try first, 85% of the time this is the problem) and/or a different USB port or PC.
ive tried 5 cables total. 3 didnt even register with pc something was plugged in. the other 2 work but they both share the same problem.

Sounds like most of them are bad - try a known-good one. Definitely try other USB ports, and then another PC. Also, drivers - reinstall them.
Is your phone sponged (stuck at Samsung) or just need to get back to stock?

So it goes into download mode but Odin doesn't recognize it...and you tried 5 cables and 3 PCs and all of their ports. You have also tried connecting without a battery, connecting to computer with Odin up and boot into download mode. No COM port shows up in Odin and no driver install errors on the computer. Still sounds like a bad cable or bad port on the phone.

NO NO NO. i think you understood me wrong. It goes to download mode and Odin does recognize it. i've tried 5 cables, only 2 of the 5 cables work. ive tried it on 2 pc's (one xp and the other vista) and havetried all the ports on both computers. vista wont see it period. xp sees it but fails during the process. so to my knowledge, ive tried everything.

So you got 1 set of everything that works but it fails in the process. Have you tried another tar? You are using a tar right, if it says md5 at the end, remove that extension. Only autoreboot checked at top, got the tar in the PDA box and the pit in the PIT box?

I didnt think to remove the md5 at the end. could be the problem. ironically, Odin recognizes the file and does a check for it. (im using odin3 v 1.0 and v 1.7). but it halts at the recovery screen. i shall try again tonight without the md5 as that seems to be the only thing i didnt do. everything else you mention has been set. ive tried 3 diff files. one for eco3, one for stock, and another for eb13 (i think). and none of them work.

On my phone or I would dig up the link but they do a good job of explaining how in the thread that...well...tells you how to do it.
Edit... sorry I see you failed mid odin. This happens to me so frequently I don't even know what to say. I would keep trying. I think eventually I would try different files in different odin sections...different odins...all sorts of crap. Persistance was the key

The PIT that doesn't have "victory" in it doesn't work. That's why I host Odin 1.61, the proper PIT, and the EC05 TAR.

[Q] Bricked my S4 need help flashing back to stock

I tried installing Cyanogen Mod but it didn't work, I just got stuck at the boot screen and when I tired to flash back to stock something really went wrong.
Now all I see is an error saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Pleas select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
But I can still access download mode so from what I can tell I can fix this with the right files and right settings in Odin3.
I have the Sprint Galaxy S4 SPH-L720. I am currently running Odin3 v3.07.
I was trying to flash this in Odin3, qbking77.com/development/how-to-unroot-and-unbrick-the-samsung-galaxy-s4. I got as far as system.img.ext4 before it failed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am still somewhat new to hacking my phone but an very tech savvy and feel comfortable following any directions you have for what to flash with odin3 and what options to use.
Thanks in advance.

Been there (that screen is still odin mode). Should be recoverable through odin still. In my case, the problem was that I had a bad tar file. I'd start there, make sure you have the right file for your phone. If you have the right file, it may be a bad download. So I would try to re-download, or naybe try a different version.
Cheers.

I had used the exact file before so I know its correct and uncorrupted. I did figure it out.
Successfully flashed using another computer. Best I can figure, following the CM installation instructions have a step "Run the included zadig.exe in the drivers folder of the Heimdall Suite."
That does something with drivers that odin must not like. I tried uninstalling, restarting my computer than reinstalling the Samsung drivers but that was not enough. A new computer was the answer.

Bigger question here is:
Why are some phones experiencing corrupt partitions after flashing AOSP-based ROMs? Myself included....

[Q] MF3 suddenly cannot get into safestrap recovery.

Searched but and found similar posts but with different phones or different firmware, so the file references were of no help.
Basically I had safestrap working, had flashed google play edition ROM and it was working great with the exception of the play store not wanting to connect. I was in the process of messing with that and read (here) that I needed 4.3 edition of that app, I checked and I had 4.2, so I loaded 4.3 to the Sdcard and installed it..
Phone rebooted and just stays on the samsung custom splash screen indefinitely . I can get to ODIN on the phone, soI tried using https://builds.casual-dev.com/jodin3/ to get access and see what I could do, but it keeps telling me to unplug and plug in the phone, and gives an error that it cant mount the device.
So, im kinda stuck, I didn't use ODIN to do anything previously, But considering its the only thing I currently have access to, I guess its my only hope.
Been fighting this a few hours and getting pretty dejected, I had almost everything PERFECT.. and now back to WORSE than where I started.

The 4.3 edition of SS doesn't work on 4.2. Does it stay on the splash or does it go to the actual boot animation? Also, you don't need to boot into the phone to use odin, it's a PC program. You can google "mf3 tar files" and you'll find the thread with the ODIN files, use them to get back to stock.

You put platform tar in the PDA slot right? Also, you might have to restart between flashes or just load them in all at once.
There's a picture on this post with what options you should have: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46955352&postcount=7

Ive downloaded it twice, Ive tried flashing it under windows 7 and OSX. Same result.
I would be happy to try a different platform file, but I cant find any others.
One oddity, the ONLY Odin program that can see the phone is Jodin3, the web based version.
Ive downloaded 1.85 and 3.07 (windows) have updated the samsung USB drivers, have updated the heimdall software... they cant see it.

Seems like it's not installing the drivers right. I'd try installing again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555 or just manually go into device manager and point it to where you installed the drivers. Also, you might have to wait a while on any version of ODIN (even the we version) for it to finish checking the file.
OHHHH ****!
You were right, it was the USB drivers, I had to do it via method 3, I.E. manually select them.. for some odd reason the installer DID install the drivers but the device showed up as someting totally different than when doing it manually.
flashing now... will see what happens:laugh:

[Q] "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"...

I had no problem using QBKing77's guide to root my S3. I looked for the comparable thread when I got my S4.
I loaded up Odin but got an error saying there was no PIT partition. I put the phone into debug mode (not in the instructions?) and it seemed to work.
But then it failed half-way through. I was plugged into a USB port on the front of the computer.
Now I get the error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I searched and found other threads for the S3 and other phones but would appreciate some help with the S4. Thanks.
Edit: are these the steps I need to take?
Edit #2: Uh, I guess those steps won't work since they will prompt me for a serial number and there doesn't seem to be a way to get that from a Galaxy S4 if it won't boot.
Help?
Does the phone boot into download mode? Have you tried flashing the stock firmware through ODIN?

When it boots, it goes straight to the error. If I hold volume down + Home, it *will* go into download mode.
I didn't know what to flash with ODIN.
After the fiasco with the attempted rooting, I didn't want to chance flashing the wrong thing.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Can someone post step-by-step directions on how to flash stock firmware through Odin? (Or the link to the thread that probably already exists)
Preferably with a link to the exact ROM/firmware that I need?

Look for CF-Auto-Root for jfltespr. That will get you rooted but will trip your Knox counter.

I have this file already downloaded: CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720
I started Odin 3.07 ("Run as administrator") and loaded the file in the PDA slot. I waited for "<OSM> Leave CS.." to appear in the "Message" box. I hooked up the Galaxy S4 but the COM port will not show up... trying different cables now... (it is plugged into the back of the computer...)

I guess that's it?

That's it. Make sure it's the current one and flash in PDA slot using Odin.
Will reboot, apply root, reboot back to stock and voila!

I can't get ODIN to recognize the S4 via the USB slot ("ID:COM" port stays blank). I even re-installed the S4 drivers. Any ideas?
I've tried 3 different cables, all plugged into the back.

Not to sound silly but did you reboot into download mode?

Not a silly question at all. I've been known to do that
But no, this time I was in "download mode". For some reason, it finally worked with one of the cables using a front USB port. (?)
Thanks for everyone's help. Crisis averted.

I've had dicey situations using download mode just like you've described on 2 different gs4's. I use heimdall, not odin, but same flakey results. The gs4's download mode appears to be very finicky about the quality of the usb cable and port. I never had any issue with download mode with identical hardware when I used to flash my gs2. So it's not you, it's the gs4. I finally got some reasonably reliable and consistent flashing results by using the usb ports on the back, and a high quality blackberry usb cable. In my case, the "bad" ports on the front are usb1.1, while the ports on the back are usb 2.0. So it seems to matter when flashing the gs4. So I would say avoid using usb 1.1 ports if your computer is old enough to have them.
