I've got a Droid RAZR M running rooted 4.1.2 Jellybean.
Since the system partition has been modified, the phone can't install the KitKat update.
My questions are:
If I update to KitKat, can I still root?
If so, how can I flash this back to the stock image? (And can that be done without losing my application data?)

1. Yes, if you update to KitKat you can root and, if you haven't, unlock your bootloader as well.
2. Flash the KitKat factory firmware with RSD Lite.
3. I dont believe the official sbf erases data, at least it doesn't show in the xml.

I'm having difficulties updating from 4.3 to 4.4.
So, bear with me as I am a noob at this stuff, but when I got my Nexus, I rooted and flashed LTE onto the phone. I did not install TWRP, I just did a temporary custom recovery. Now, when I receive the OTA update, it stops around 25% of the way through, with an Error! and the red yield sign and the Android laying on its side.
I reset my phone, however, that didn't do anything. I think I have to undo the LTE before 4.4 can install. Maybe.
Could anyone offer suggestions/help me with this?
Thanks in advance.
To make the OTA update work you have to be unrooted running stock kernel and stock recovery. Otherwise you will get an error when updating OTA. First backup all your files to a computer.
- Download 4.4 custom ROM and flash it via recovery. Make sure to flash the latest boot loader and kernel.
OR
- Download stock 4.4 image file; unzip and run the flash all file. This will wipe everything in your phone and install stock 4.4.
OR
- Download N4 toolkit and flash 4.4 via that.

So basically I went back to stock by "TAR files to flash MF3 via ODIN" and now I am on 4.2.2 stock. I don't really need root and just want to go 4.3
What I want to do is go 4.3 but it won't let me, it says I am up to date even though I am on 4.2.2.
It also won't let me update via kies...how do I fix this?

Ok so I have a rooted 4.2.2 mf3 S4 and I want to factory reset it because it's pretty laggy if I compare it to my gf's s4 which is also rooted.
I didn’t do the odin root, I used this method to root my s4

Is there any easy way to factory reset without losing the root?
I got a few more questions
Is there a way I can go to 4.3 root from 4.2.2? What would happen if I update to stock 4.3 or 4.4 (when it officially comes out) using the AT&T software update, will it brick my phone or will I be ok?

ODIN root method is for the I337m only anyways, so it wouldn't have worked. If you do a factory reset in the stock recovery, it doesn't touch the system files at all so you should still keep root. I'd make SuperSU a system app first though. You can get the 4.3 OTA through the software update menu and as long as you activate survival mode in SuperSU and you haven't made any changes whatsoever to the system files (besides root), it will run just fine.
Nvm got it! thanks
Bump! updated OP
Could anyone give some info on what's the easiest way to get to a rooted stock Kitkat rom?
I'm currently running a rooted stock 4.3 rom with a couple of xposed modules with Team Win Recovery.
I can't update through the settings menu, because my phone is rooted, so i'll have to do it manually. Preferably I would like to update without the loss of data, just like an official update. It's no crisis if I have to though, I can always make a backup if I have to do a full wipe.

Flash the official KitKat update through Odin. You shouldn't lose any data. The root using CF- Auto Root

find the stock rom from samsung-updates.com or sammobile.com and flash through Odin 3.07 or TWR

Hi, almost a year ago shortly after I got my S4 I was very eager to root it, so I came here and followed the guides. I successfully flashed the ROM and proceeded to root my phone but still didn't fully understand the process. I've been sitting on the same version of Android (4.2.2) for a while now and cannot update because there was a file I had to back up and rename. This file was the file which launched the updater, and wasn't part of the guide...
Just now I decrypted my phone, re-flashed it with TWRP, did a factory reset and still have a rooted phone with no update file. I fear the risk of bricking it if I proceed with adding ROM's. Is there an easy way to either update my phone, or unroot it? I may have naively made the only backup image the one that was rooted and with no update file. Staying rooted and updating would be prefered but I just have no idea what I'm doing, to be honest :fingers-crossed:

Could u tell me what is your firmware from about device .....If u have MDL or MDB then u just install any custom 4.4 Kitkat roms and then flash loki patch. U are pretty lucky to have that firmware. Do Not update using your phone coz u would stuck with locked BL and u won't be able to use loki patch anymore. On the other side if u like to unroot just odin to stock firmware according to your firmware.

It seems to be MDL.
Much appreciated and I think i'll try Odin because I want to be able to update officially from Samsung for now.
Thank you
I am on 5.0.1 rooted with stock ROM and stock kernel. I recently got 5.1 upgrade notification.
After downloading the data and restarting the phone, it started installing updates and after a while it showed "error" and stopped.
Now I m on 5.0.1 with no 5.1 upgrade notice.
What is wrong and what should I do for this?
Thank you.
Do I need to unroot? I am on stock kernel and ROM.

Yes, you need to unroot before you can apply the OTA upgrade. Look for the Nexus Root Toolkit, and it should be able to clean up for you.
But prior I didn't need to unroot to upgrade anytime! To upgrade JB to KK or KK to LP, I didn't unroot before installation.
you need stock recovery to update via OTA
Yeah I was on pure stock. Stock ROM kernel and recovery.
Btw, I unrooted my phone with simply unroot and then OTA update went well.
So now I am on stock 5.1 unrooted.
Thank u all.
i have troubles as well. i unrooted, installed stock recovery (via n4 toolkit) and tryed to install. it takes longer then before but i stell get an error. SuperSU is gone in my app drawer.. any other help?
PS: i am on stock rom 5.0.1
i tryed to use sideload ADB update. it says: "/system/bin/app_process32" has unexpected contents. Error in sideload/package.zip. Status 7
any tipps?
