[Q] Tab 4 7 Auto power down - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has any one had their 7 inch Tab 4 shut down after sitting idle for a few minutes? Do you know how to change the setting?

It appears to be a hardware related issue. After extensive testing, it is time to exchange for a new one. It appears that the tablet is not just shutting down but locking up only when on battery power. When plugged in it has no problems.

Screen timeout - power v battery?

Hi,
Just coming to Android from Windows Mobile....
With Windows Mobile you can have the screen blank after so many minutes when on battery OR so many minutes (or never) when on mains power.
Any way of doing this with the Nexus One?
Thanks.
You could install Power Manager and it'll let you control all sorts of things based on time, battery level, whether it's plugged in, etc.
It used to be a lifesaver on the G1 with its battery problems. Haven't tried it on the N1 though.
Also from WM. It would be nice to have some way of managing the sleep timeout...looks like mine turns off after a few minutes of inactivity?

Go to Menu>>settings>>sound and display>>screen timeout. you can set it to several preset values. Power Manager from the market will do this but allow for it to be different depending on whether it is plugged in or not.

I would also recommend buying setcpu from the android market I believe its still a buck. Then go into profiles, click profiles on, enable sleep/standby and set sleep/standby max to 245. Will save you a ton of battery usage!

Excellent, 10 or 20 min's should do the trick for now!
Try out Screebl. It's in the Market. It keeps the screen on as long as you're holding it in a position like it's being used. If you turn it upside down on the table (for example), it knows you're obviously not using it, and the timeout is set to 30 seconds or something like that. Everything is totally customizable, including thresholds for what angles trigger it... there's an option to timeout even when upright if it sits perfectly still for a while... it's an awesome battery saver, and eliminates the annoyance of unwanted screen timeouts while reading or something. I love it. Also, SetCPU's profiles are a great way to go if you're rooted. Power Manager was the first paid app I ever bought, and it was worth it--it really does extend the G1's crappy battery life, so it has to help here, too.
Locale will let you change settings based on the status of your phone.
Presuming it works with the Nexus One (I'm still on a G1), it will let you change the birghtness/screen timeout when it is plugged in/unplugged. It's also generally a useful app for changing settings based on location/time of day.

Locale works with the N1 =)
I tried Locale...
Specified if on mains then screen timeout is never. This works while it's plugged in, but when I unplug the mains the screen still stays on permanently rather than reverting to 1 minute timeout.
Any ideas?

should i return this iconia?

Hello all,
I bought my iconia tab last Tues. I am a big fan of android. But I have used an I pad since they were released. Now I'm not going to make comparisons, but I'm thinking I may have received a bad unit. Or maybeothers can verify my findings.
Battery life is horrible.
I barely get 4 hours of use before I need to go running for the charger.
Random shutdowns and reboot.
Unit will shutdown at random, even when I'm using it. And it reboot any time it loses a wifi source. Ex. I have a mobile hotspot. If I shut the hotspot off, the iconia will reboot when it loses the signal.
Screen on/off all day.
When I put the unit in standby, the screen turns on and off about evey 2 minutes.
Laggy keyboard.
Even as I type this, the keyboard is extremly laggy.
I am running this unit stock now, nothing extra has been installed.
I even did a factory reset and hard reset.
Ii have not received any updates, although I check all the time. I'm still on the 1.104. Build.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
from your description, yeah, you should probably return this unit...
just return my device is not that bad, battery last 1 day with normal use, never random shut down
the only thing i got troubled with is screen on/off , that is solved by pressing powerr button several times, very annoying actuallly
I've gotten 2 days of moderate use, I usually charge every night but unless I'm playing games for hours at a time I'm usually @ 40% before I plug in.
If the tab is rebooting on a frequent basis, particularly if you can do it on demand, definitely return it.
The screen random on should be fixed by the .141 update
I don't want to start anything but when i read "Should I return it?" and your posting it in this forum, then most likely the person posting it (if you found this forum) knows a little about it. But to read, it shuts off, battery life is terrible, etc..
I dont use it all day but i will use it with lowest brightness, 1 min timeout, and i dont use twitter or play movies, but get like 5-8 days on a charge.. NOW, one key thing, i turn the power OFF when done using it and does hold the battery much better (I never tried airplane mode)..
Never mind, got off on a rant from the thread...unrelated, there are some very cool news apps that are out now for HC.
Ok. Returned it for a fresh unit. Letting it get a full charge before I do anything with it.
Fyi. Previous unit only gave me 4 hours. Regardless if I was using it or it was sitting in standby.
Does anyone know of a way to get the 141 update without rooting?

For the first time since I bought it I haven't used my device for a day. In around 22 hours of standby it lost 3% battery.
So draining in 4 hours in standby sounds completly defective to me.
when I got mine
battery was at 50%
I used it during the day, and when the battery was arround 5% I did a full charge
- regular usage : 1day ++
- working usage : 8 hours (web apps dev...)
4 hours, use it or not it's awfull...
Wish you got better now

What kind of screen problem? Is it turning on randomly while in stand by or the other way around, turning off while in use?
And for my future reference, how do you do returns in Indonesia? Do you take it to the store or to the service center (or either)? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the screen would randomy turn on/off while in standby.
The other. The tablet would actually power off while i was using it, not just th screen, the entire thing.

Force Nexus 4 to stay awake when screen is off?

I am using Cyanogenmod on Nexus 4 to perform some current measurements.
Now I have one problem where Nexus 4 will go to sleep whenever I disconnect USB cable (with screen turned off). The idle current goes down to almost zero (from 0.10A) and anything that I started to execute over adb finishes only when I turn on the screen or connect USB back to Nexus 4.
Does anyone know how I can fix this and force Nexus 4 to stay awake when I turn off the screen?
Anyone? Is there some settings in Android/Cyanogenmod that I can set?
Play a tune or something.
Or I bet there's an app in the app store.

Try SafeCharge application and there is a setting to keep a wakelock manually so that the phone won't sleep with screen off

Thanks. That's pretty much how I solved my problem.
I downloaded app that enables wake lock. Before device would always go into standby mode and lock everything up.
The idle current was pretty low with wake lock enabled (like 22mA)... not sure if this is normal.

Keep App Alive While HD 8 Screen it Off?

I have a couple HD 8's (and a 10) that I wiped that are running Lineage (awesome) and now are being used as interactive panels in my house to keep me updated on my security system, webcams and other devices.
The problem is that I don't like keeping the screen on 24/7 so I have the units screen go off. When it does this, of course the unit goes to sleep and the main app (Fully Kiosk Browser) goes to sleep as well. When I tap the screen the next time, it has to wake up and it shows all out-of-date info. On the 10 it refreshes everything in about a second, but on the 8's it takes about 5 seconds which is a long time to wait to see the time, temp, etc.
I'm wondering if there's ANY way to keep the system running (the tablets are always powered), but to have the screens go fully off without the unit going to sleep.

You can enable Stay Awake in developer options to keep the screen on while charger is connected.

Will this cause the battery to swell up if I leave it on Keep Awake with the charger connected all the time?

The battery doesn't swelling up while charger is connected because it has an overcharge protection.
The problem with this is I also don't want to have the screen on all the time as the glow from it, even when device is set to all black, is quite distracting. Plus it's still burning the life of the backlights 24/7 unnecessarily.
