I'm picking up my phone tomorrow. I was wondering if any of the tethering apps work with or without root on this phone yet. I know the more popular one requires a kernel with netiptables enabled. I'm not sure if the default kernel supports this or not.

I'm sure PDAnet works or you can just change the APN settings to use native hotspots without getting charged.
"native hotspots".... as in.... anywhere a 3G connection is available?

Like the built in tethering option and yeah pretty much anywhere you can get a data connection.
I got the Barnacle Wifi tether working without much challenge thanks to the Devs in the other threads. Could not install it from the AppBrain market but was able to follow the links to download the APK and install it from the internal sd card. Tried to get the widget to donate too,but could not do so from the market place.

Me either, this is my first Android phone. I did a search for wifi hotspot in the AppBrain market and it came up. My limited test with it was good. Used the APN setup from other threads and rooted the phone, also described elsewhere. Then downloaded the APK and installed it. A fairly straight forward process.
Problem with PDANet is the huge cost when I'd only really use the feature when traveling. How is barnacle wifi? Does it support encryption?
I am using a basic WEP key, not sure what you want out of the encryption. Better to check developers web site, I know there are some challenges but it is a little out of my league without spending a long time reading about it.
Well WEP/WPA/WPA2 type of encryption so someone doesn't steal my limited data. Does it support WPA/2 by the way? WEP is pretty easily cracked these days, but it is better than nothing at all.
I love tethering on a new phone, with a fast network, and unlimited data but until root the best I could hope for was a USB/Bluetooth solution..
I rooted yesterday and have the basics, Xposed framework and wanam, as well as X Tether, but so far no combination has gotten me to the holy grail. With wanam I was able to remove the vzw dialog, the Wi-Fi network wasn't connectable
And turned off with error.
I also went the sqlite editor route but received "cannot open database" when accessing the settings storage to add hotspot as a quick icon..
Has anyone come up with a solution for activating the native Wi-Fi hotspot, without getting the banner and/or an error?

Sorry! I was under the impression that this required a custom recovery. I'll give it a shot though.. Thanks!
This may be common knowledge, and if so I apologize, but I thought it might help someone else out.
Since we are waiting for Root, the only way I know to Tether is using the Foxfi app, which requires you to set a secured lockscreen so it can install VPN credentials.
If you are like me and hate having to enter a pin every time you unlock your phone, hundreds of times a day, a great and simple workaround I've discovered is to download and set up the Dislock app (formerly Pebble Locker).
It basically gives your 4.4.x apps the Bluetooth "trusted devices/locations" features of Lollipop. It has the added benefit of being able to override the lockscreen, so you can have Foxfi ready to go and use your basic swipe to unlock.
I use mine with my Moto 360 and my home WiFi so it only asks me for a pin when I want it to.
Hope that helps someone!

I've never used the Dislock app, can you please explain what settings need to be applied to get it to work? Does FoxFi need to be turned on when dislock is on? Thank you.
I tried all sorts of things and couldn't figure it out. So I looked around for another option and this worked for me:
easy way to reset lock screen options
found a fix for getting all lock screen options back.
log into google device manager: www.google.com/android/devicemanager
click on the lock button for your device.
enter a new pass and save.
now go to your phone and use the new pass to unlock the phone.
you should now be able to go to your lock screen settings and pick whichever lock option you need.

Dislock works on Foxfi with the Verizon Noted 4 KK too
I know this worked on the S4 and should also work on the Note 4.

I have tried this before and does work, until you want to use Foxfi again and then it asks for the lock process again. Does it on Kitkat and Lollipop.
First, I've only had this phone for about a week and I love it So far everything just works. I'm coming from The Incredible, Rezound, Gs3, GS4. I'm not saying I don't miss root because I do. I miss Tasker, Xsposed, Wifi Hotspot Xposed Module, root explorer and safestrap (for the times I want to play with a rom).
Life without root
Tasker Sub - Smart Connect - I found a sweet little app called "Smart Connect" in the Google Play Store . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonyericsson.extras.liveware&hl=en - Previously I would use takser to for certain conditions - example I would have tasker launch waze when I'm attached to my car Bluetooth. Smart connect does this along with many more option just like tasker.
Wifi Hotspot - I have unlimited data so the hotspot doesn't work for me - I searched and searched and can't find anything but PDA connect that works with USB tether - This is probably the main reason I miss root, especially on vacation with the family. IF ANYONE FINDS A BETTER WORK AROUND PLEASE POST! THANKS
Root explorer - It still works but without root you can't write to existing files. I always like the cloud storage tabs feature, you can add dropbox and other services as a tab and it all still works. Copy and paste still work. I use this a lot for Moto 360 watch faces. I download them to dropbox and then use Root explorer to move them to a folder that Watchface and Facer can use. Works Great!
Please list other work arounds here, I like to see what everyone else is doing.
Thanks

You can replace stock equalizer with this one without root.
Bass boost and surround effects don't seem to work but everything else does and it works over Bluetooth audio.

I'd avoid this app. It doesn't consistently work. Most times I was having to FC and restart the app to get any of the settings to actually work. It would work for a day and then I'd have to start the process all over again. Their customer support sucks too since It has been over 2 months since I sent them an email and no response.

What phone?
I don't have those issues (Moto Maxx on lollipop).
For me, surround and bass options do nothing, but everything else works.
Not the greatest eq, but for people without root that want to use something else than
stock audiofx might be helpful.

I'm unable to find my Chromecast (2nd gen) using Quick Connect. Quick Connect does find several Sonos speakers and a neighbor's TV (which is not very helpful since I don't know the neighbor )... I've understood from several articles elsewhere on the net that Quick Connect on the S6 could connect to Chromecast. Is there some setting that I'm perhaps not seeing that I need to toggle (the S7 Edge is my first Samsung phone)? I've tried reconfiguring the Chromecast on my 2.4 and 5 ghz networks, with the phone connected to the appropriate network each time, to no avail. I'd rather be able to cast the screen quickly via Quick Connect than use the Chromecast app. Connections via the Chromecast app are also unreliable by the way.. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm also having the same problem I used to do it easily with my S6 Edge but S7 Edge andust S7 not finding my Chromecast.
Why are you using Quick Connect for Chromecast? As long as I'm on the same Wi-Fi network I can send things to my Chromecast. It just works. No need to "connect" each time I want to use it.

Because casting via the Chromecast app requires extra clicks. Open Chromecast app, open hamburger menu, click Cast screen, click Connect to Chromecast. In principle, Quick Connect should allow me to swipe down, click Quick Connect, click my Chromecast. Anyway, it's supposed to work, so I'd like it to work

I have a Galaxy S6 and until yesterday it was running Android 5.1.1. Now it's running 6.0.1. Before the update Quick Connect worked with my Chromecast (2nd Generation) perfectly. Now it does not recognize it.
I assume your S7 is running 6.0.1 as well.
Was this by design? I hope not and that a patch will be created SOON!
I also hope that a patch can be written to fix this issue.
I'm used to being able to cast / stream to just about anything using my HTC phone.
I'm a first-time Samsung user and, although I love the S7 Edge, I find this a major frustration !
Fortunately, there is an easy enough alternative. ES File Explorer has a Chromecast add-on that you can choose to add the first time you attempt to cast. It works very well.

I haven't come across any information that states one way or the other. I know it's a Samsung feature, not Google (Android), but your guess is as good as mine at this point.
Under developer options in the settings menu (turn on by going to About Phone and tapping Build Number repeatedly) there is an option for Authorizing Wireless Display Devices, but I haven't had the opportunity to see what it actually does yet. By default it's turned off.

Its something that Samsung took out.
There were some apks (ChromecastFrameworkService.apk, RemotePlayer.apk, SecEmbeddedServerService.apk) that was responsible for this functionality that was removed in marshmallow.

I've tried to flash these APKs from the Lollipop ROM, but after that my S6 failed to boot. Didn't tried to debug to see whats going on (maybe installing manually instead of flashing resolve this, I don't know).
For those who wants to investigate, here (XtreStoLite Deodexed Aroma Add-on Package 2.4a) is a package that has these APKs. Maybe you guys are luckier than me.

How does one that is not technologically minded do this?
If anyone of you here still need some guidance on how to enable and use chromecast here it is.
Go to the playstore and download the chromecast app which can be found here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app
You can add the chromecast app as a shortcut to your home screen or to the "App Edge" feature.
And or you can also download the Google Chrome browser at the playstore which can be found here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome
When you see the chromecast icon on top of the chrome browser's title bar click it to start chromecasting.
Quick Connect has nothing to do with chromecast and will not connect to the chromecast dongle.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

Yes, I've understood that the problem is that Samsung has crippled this functionality in their 6.0.1 version of Touchwiz. I haven't found a way to get the functionality back despite posts in several different forums. The Google Cast app does allow you to connect to Chromecast, but the process is more cumbersome than casting via the quick settings menu. I hope someone finds a solution for this problem.
