Questions about firmware and rooting - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have Note 3 SM-N9005. Android version is 4.3 (Israeli stock Rom, still no update for that).
Current firmware is something that ends with CSC:MJ4. I tried to update to NF4 using Kies 3 but there is some kind of error that prevents me from doing so. The error occurs when download of firmware components gets to about 70%. It happened several times now.
My device is completely stock, and I like to root it. Should I try to solve the firmware update issue before rooting? Is there an easy way to root without voiding KNOX? I tried to search information in the forum but haven't managed to completely understand what should I do.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi Itay,
Not that I am an expert by any measure, however I have been quite successful (and lucky!) with flashing my Note 3 (so far) and previously with my S2. There is so much good information on XDA, provided by people who really what they are doing and are willing to share their knowledge, work and help us 'users' (as opposed to developers) out.
That said, I hope (expect) that a more experience member will correct me if I'm wrong, it should be possible to flash an original Samsung ROM via ODIN. Browse around on XDA, and you will find the files and instructions you need. There are many good tutorials available, and you need to read up on whether you will lose all your data (very likely!), and whether you will trip KNOX 0x1, which I understand you can avoid using Samsung original files. For me personally, I don't require KNOX to interface at work, so am using a custom ROM, which tripped KNOX to 0x1.
Good luck, and I hope you figure out how to update your device without issues.

That's part of my problem, there is so much information that I kind of get lost in it, and don't manage to understand what exactly I should do.

Try kies in different pc at different place, spl if u r trying at work place avoid using kies as security will be high.

Read into the Odin method - You can flash software version of your choice, without the risk of voiding KNOX and keeping a completely stock device (if you choose to)

[Q] Help me unbrick my S4

Here's the story:
I got my S4 late last year, and decided to use qbking77's root technique to root my phone. After the 4.3 update, I no longer had root. Also, I had the wifi issue plaguing many S4 users at the moment. So I thought maybe re-rooting would solve my problem, but apparently qbking's method no longer works. So, being a crafty individual, I decided to revert to 4.2.2. I downloaded L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar from samsung-updates and used ODIN to load it. Soon after starting the download, I received a FAIL notification in ODIN and an error in the download screen on my phone as follows:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1
I have tried many versions of ODIN but cannot get the file to load. I really don't want to deal with Sprint over this matter, so any help would be appreciated.
[I am also downloading the 4.3 version from samsung-updates at the moment, but I have to get to bed, so I will try tomorrow.]

Grab the MK2 tar (OR MJA) - THERY'RE HERE LOOK.
Flash that in PC Odin and you'll be fine
Spend some time and read and you'll be Okay.

THANK you for reporting back! That is what this community is all about.
Since you have the lates firmware (MJA or MK2) you can now go root, install recovery (via PC Odin or goomanager) and then flash what you wish.
BUT please take some time to read through the developers OPs and followup posts - different ROMs require different recoveries and wipe methods. Recoveries can be switched in recovery too.
Good luck
Hi guys,
I came across this post while searching XDA as I am getting the same error (SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1) when I try to install "L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar" via various versions of ODIN.
A little background on my phone:
Sprint GS2 L720 that I bought used. The phone gets stuck on the yellow Sprint screen during boot-up. I don't have the whole story but apparently he tried to flash the phone and did so with the incorrect ROM. Rather than try to fix the phone he decided to sell it for cheap so he found a sucker (me) to buy it hoping that I could fix it. I don't have a problem getting the phone into download mode, just can't get the TAR file to install correctly. Since I've never had this phone in working condition I don't know what firmware is on the phone.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb or basic question but I'm completely new at this so any help you can give me in laymen's terms (or links to threads I should read or files I should install) would be greatly appreciated.
LeaderBuilder- You mentioned installing recovery via ODIN? Would you mind elaborating on this. I Googled "Install Recovery with ODIN S4" and came up with videos and links using ClockworkMod and TWRP but I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to. I just hesitant because I don't want to make matters worse or hardbrick my phone.
Anybody willing to respond and help me out- THANKYOU!!!
You install recoveries by using tar files of them

You are trying to install an older version of the stock tar. Once your phone has been upgraded to MJA or newer you cannot install older tar files. You can download the newest stock tar for are phone from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443
Install using odin 3.07 or newer. Good luck.
Thanks Cruise,
I read through all of the posts on the link that you sent and according to the original poster, flashing that TAR will trip the KNOX which sounds undesirable and potentially dangerous (at least according to the second poster). Is this my best best or only option? Sorry if that's a dumb question but like I said, I'm new to all of this and I really don't want to hard brick my phone. Ideally I'd like to get this to boot properly and bring it back to stock but it sounds like bringing it back to stock might not be an option at this point. Thanks again for your input and the link!

How is it dangerous to trip knox? I personally have it tripped and have really ran into any problems once I rooted. I couldn't install kernels for some reason but I think that was something o was doing wrong .

And it will NOT trigger Knox because it is a stock unmodified tar straight from Samsung/Sprint.

I got news for you, your Knox is already tripped. If the previous owner had already tried to root and install a custom rom that ship has sailed. Installing a stock tar does not trip Knox, installing a custom recovery does.

New to Note 3 modding

Hi everyone, I'm a new poster on XDA, long time lurker. I am an Android users, previous owner of several 'classic' android phones, such as GS3.
I've always flashed on my own, but now that I own a 9005 Note 3, I thought I'd jump on here and request some info before checking, due to the whole Knox thing and the higher degree of complexity involved in the process.
I have tried looking for the help posts on my own but I usually found 2 or more different versions for things like rooting and rom flashing which left me a bit dubious, so I decided to open one thread:
I would like to flash either the Hyperdrive ROM or the XNote one, can someone help me through the process directing me to a clear post about all the required steps for an SM 9005?
I am obviously updated to 4.4.2 Android version, and my Kernel is 3.4.0-1168347.
Thanks in advance to anyone who will answer, and congrats to everyone who contributes to the forum, your work is astonishingly helpful!
+1 im in the same predicament as you and im sure theres more..

Are you guys worried about the warranty, if not then i can help as i just flashed mine 2 days back.
You need to flash CF Root using ODIN(do a search) pretty easily done. Post that flash Philz latest recovery(search) using ODIN.
Take a EFS backup using any tool on playstore and rom back up. Download xnote and then keep it in your internal sd card.
Go to recovery menu(search howto) either manually follow the clearing process or use the flash a new room menu item. and then go ahead and flash ur new rom.

I don't really mind voiding my warranty, I just want to be sure the ROM flashing is successfull and I am able to restore the phone to the original status if needed. If there isn't a way to keep from tripping the knox flag, so be it.

Hey,
I was in the same position as you guys. Been with android and flashed for years without issue. If you don't mind voiding your warranty (depending on the country you live in) start here, I'm sure you have heard of chainfire and know of his awesome work, just follow the install instructions, it's too easy. Like chainfire says if it takes you more than 30 seconds you need practice. Next you need a custom recovery, my suggestion is Chenglu's CWM, this was one thing I had issues with. When flashing certain ROMs I had issues (apps crashing or built in apps not installing while flashing etc...), I later found out that it was due to the recovery I was using, I switched to Chenglu's CWM and haven't had an issue. I've since flashed just about everything on offer with no problems. Just make sure you do plenty of reading and you will be fine.
Good luck.
PS: Depending on what firmware you are on now you maybe able to RDLV, take a look here. I just noticed you said about restoring to the original state. If you trip Knox, at present there is no way to un-trip it, meaning your Knox status will always show 0x1 warranty void and gives Samsung service centres the right to refuse warranty claims. Like I said it depends on where you live (in Australia we have laws that protect consumers from stupid things like Knox, as long as it is a manufacturer fault). The only thing I didn't like about the idea of RDLV is, you can't install a custom recovery, stopping you from doing all the fun stuff having a rooted device allows you to do. But each to there own. Hope this helped.

[Q] NAE Question

I just had to replace my S4 because I broke the screen on my old one. Unfortunately, the new one was shipped to me with NAE firmware and boot loader already installed. This means I'm already on KNOX from the first second of turning it on.
I have seen plenty of guides on how to update to NAE, and get root, etc. by not allowing KNOX to installed. However, I haven't really seen anything about what can be done if it's already installed. There's things scattered all over the net that suggest there might be ways around this, but nothing on the forums here that I have been able to find yet.
I'm not looking to flash any crazy roms or anything right now, I really just want root, but it seems like even that might be impossible now. Could I use something like "DrKetan Multitool" to "DeKNOX" my device and then root it? Does this tool even work on the S4, he claims it does but I've not seen it mentioned on the actual S4 forums. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Note, I am looking for a method that doesn't trip the flash counter; or at least allows a reset afterwards. I'd rather not void the warranty on a brand new device if possible.

I was already planning on installing UnknownForce Stock Rooted NAE Rom, if it's possible. However, you didn't really answer my question. Is there a method to bypass/kill the KNOX boot loader at this point or not? If not, then I might as well just stop now. I'm not prepared to void the warranty at this point.

4.4.4 OTA update with root

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Is there a way to install this update without having to use odin and flashing stock? I dont want to lose all my appz settings etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I still have the unlocked lock on the note 3 splash screen after reboot and the OTA fails....says error at install screen. I have read other people have done what i have done and the update worked. What im asking is am i overlooking something? Is it really even possible without using odin and reverting to stock even though i have read people have had sucess????

If you want the benefits "fixes" of the latest, would be be smart to Odin stock so you are clean when you take the OTA.

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…

[Q] Newb needs guide or help on upgrading firmwares.

Hello guys long time reader first time poster. I need some help on how to upgrade to lollipop I don't have much experience doing things on android other than using Towelroot to root previous versions and just using some basic Root apps to do something. nothing hardcore like flashing ROMs and things like that. I'm just looking for a guide or a how to on using I guess you guys call it Odin to upgrade from 4. 4. 4 to lollipop. I tried searching but I could not get any usable results maybe I'm not using the right terms. please help me much appreciated thank you

If you're trying to keep root, I think there's a thread for that. If you don't care about root, you can go to the sammobile website for images, odin needs to be installed on a pc, put your phone in the correct mode (probably power+home+volume up) flash the image... or just use OTA. There's a thread for everything. I'm a long time reader and small amount poster. This should not be a difficult task to find "the droids you are looking for."
Be sure to reboot (maybe reset) after lollipop update...otherwise you'll possibly have a few glitches.
Yeah I got most of the how to put phone into correct mode and download the firmware. Is Odin self explanatory? Meaning connect the phone. Select the firmware and the software does the rest?
Thanks
Oh yea no root. I'm on 4.4.4. Just wanna update to see how much better if any it is.
also I'm on vzw note 3. But using on tmobile with the band4 enabled. I'm hoping lollipop update doesn't block the band4 or anything? Can anyone chime in on this?
