Hi I am on 4.4.2 stock rom rooted. All of a sudden the multitasking key on my S5 when held no longer brings up the menu in any app or home screen it just opens the multitasking as if I pressed it instead of holding. Also, I can no longer take screenshot via pressing the home button and power button at the same time as it just opens Google now. I have home2 launcher installed to open Google now instead of svoice but this does no longer works as well. I am not sure how the problem occurred out of the blue. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

First, you have to distinguish between the key failing to work per se and a key that works fine but does a different action than you expected. If you meant the latter, then simply reassign the function that you prefer to the key.
You said that you had a third party launcher change a key action which no longer works. So go back to your custom launcher settings and reinitialize that setting again. If your app doesn't let you adjust those settings, then reinstall the app to have your key preference set again. Or use an app like xposed to remap the key function.
Another example that you cited was the "multitasking key". That isn't a standard label, so it's uncertain which key you are referring to, but probably you mean the left soft key, located to the left of the home button. Test it by dialing *#0*#
Then Sub key on the hardware test menu
Inevitably the test will show that the key works fine and you just need to remap it's function.
Likewise with your screen shot issue. Go back to whatever app setup that key combination to take a screen shot with those two keys and reset it again.
.
Thanks for the reply, how do you go about remapping the softkey. The screenshot issue has nothing to do with a third party app I have uninsulated all launchers and used the stock touchwiz launcher and the problem persists. All buttons work fine for around 30 seconds after I boot then they start acting as previously mentioned which leads me to believe it's an app that has somehow changed the functions of the hardware keys. I just wanted to know if anyone had a clue what's causing it as I have tried and it is driving me up the wall.

Please use paragraphs, those walls of text are hard to read.
Agreed that it sound like apps loading after boot are customizing the key functions in ways that you don't like. You can disable or uninstall as many apps as possible and add them back one at a time to see which ones cause problems. Or, as mentioned previously, use xposed framework to remap the key functions.
You're hoping for a short cut in having someone name what specific apps are involved. That's a long shot at best that someone would just happen to know. And you should have at least listed all of the apps on your phone to narrow it down.. or help jog someone's memory.

Home key and app swap soft key not working
I have a galaxy s5 and just updated to lollipop 5.0 and then the home key and app swap key stopped working. Also it was running very slowly and I thought maybe it was because I had 384 apps installed (11 gig). Anyway it was driving me crazy but I didn't want to perform a factory reset. Too many programs into to lose..
I followed the instruction to take out the SD card and SIM card and restart without the SIM card and they started working again so I replaced the SIM card and it works fine now..
Thank you forum..

hi im having problem on my x1 whenever i try to use my keyboard now
even i didnt press the blue buttons i can type in numbers and i try many ways to get my keyboard to function poperly. does anyone has this problem?
and is there any solution?
help please anyone???
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP IM DYING TO FIND THE SOLUTION AS THIS IS VERY ANNOYING, I DO NOT WANT TO PERFORM HARD RESET ON IT EVEN AFTER I READ THE MENU IT SAYS NOTHING AOUT IT
Did the problem start after installing a particular application? Try uninstalling each application you've added from the most recent backwards, soft resetting inbetween each uninstallation in case something is causing a conflict.
As a last resort a hard reset* should sort the problem, assuming it's software related. Of course you'll need to reinstall any applications you've got on the phone, and back up any data you want to keep on the phone (I always forget to copy newly added numbers from the phone onto the sim before hard resets, unfortunately ).
*switch the phone off, then hold both silver buttons closest to the screen either side of the optical joystick and switch the phone on while holding the buttons. Keep them pressed until a white screen with blue writing appears. Now follow the onscreen instructions to reset your phone to it's factory default settings.
e: just noticed that you replied while I was writing this. no need to shout! It's an odd problem, and there's probably no one else who's had it, hence no replies. If the problem hasn't been solved after a soft reset, then more than likely a program that's been installed has either taken over a keyboard function, been configured incorrectly, or has overwritten a system file when installing. In which case, like I said, uninstall each program you've installed. If that doesn't work, I think you'll have to hard reset it.
e ii: does the "Fn" icon appear at the bottom of the screen, to the left of the middle, right next to the SIP icon?
I HAVE SOLVED IT BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY IT IS FIX
first i slide out my keyboard keep preesing the numbers on microsoft word then i go to dail pad and keep pressing the keyboard numbers then i close the keyboard and began to type with compact qwerty later i slide the keyboard out again and it works............... wtf?????????? is this some bug or what if anyone experience it please tell me. no idea what the hack is happen............ btw thanx anyone who helped me, at least now i dont need a hard reset. (i have been hard resetting my x1 more than 10 times within 3 weeks time................)

even the fn sign is not there it just straight away type out numbers, after a soft reset when slide out the keyboard instantly when i type it has numbers..... really weird....
That is very odd. I thought for a while that maybe the phone thinks it's in the dialpad, so I tried to see if the dialpad running in the background would cause the same thing in word, but mine seemed to be ok.

i think im the first xperia user to encounter this problem i just going mad keep pressing the button and think of related applications that relates both so dailer and microsoft word solve my problem. at first i encounter tthe keyboards button starts from opera mini when i try to type in my address and ended up with numbers
I have almost the same problem i have install TOUCH HD Keyboard and after that i couldn't make èòàù (italian) so after uninstalling that .cab all works well again but no more Virtual Keyboard
you probably have press the function key twice, such that it function-lock your keyboard, so all the keys that you hit will yield the numbers or whatever the function+key is supposed to yield.
just hit the function key again to unlock function lock.

At last no solution right?
This is madly weird. I've been flashing roms on HTC phones for years and what I have just found with my HTC HD is after flashing to a new ROM is that I can not go back to the home screen with either the hardware button or the soft home button in the start menu. It just will not have it. The phone works but weirdly with no home screen. The start menu works as does to the call hardware button to take me to the phone dialer etc. Just no ability ot get to the homescreen.... only time i have ever seen it is after restart, but then homescreen will hang and when I navigate away from it, ie with start or call button I can not get back and screen refreshes are bad.
The only way i seem to be able to use my phone any more is not have manila of any flavour running?
Weird, any thoughts. Sorry for the ramble - I have done loads of searches to try and sort this but to no avail.
FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very weird, FIXED...
FIXED by deleting app data on memory card. Found this out by accident as it worked without mem card in phone. WEIRD.
app data?
what do you mean by "app data on memory card"?
uhm... the application data folder?

This is a well known problem with 23xxx ROMs. Deleting the application data folder solves a number of problems. Check out Energy's thread for more info.
OK so I just got my D2 last week, and I have to admit its kind of a grows on ya thing. I also have an hd2 as my personal phone so im spoiled with the giant screen. D2 is much more responsive then my hd2 and dont get me started windows lame OS.
BUT....
Why is there no built in "home" key? when Im browsing there doesn't seem to be any way to get back to the desktop of my phone with out hitting the return button and exiting all applications.
Very annoying. And the whole bajillion apps running that can't be shut off. I bought an app that "freezes" them, so far so good. Why do I have to buy an app to open the cmd prompt?
and the searchsoft key. wtf nothing happens.
IS there any way I can hack and re-assign my keys to different functions?
I would like the search key (magnifying glass) to bring up google search any time i hit it, and my home key to always go back to the homescreen.
is this just me being a noob and cant git' r' done or is this a D2/android thing? THis is only my first week with the android operating system, I realy love it, really makes WM look like a pos. yeah and windows 7? it just ads more ghey to the old wm. stil sucks.
Any help would be nice thanks!
Are you using the stock ROM and launcher? or do you use launcher pro or ADW?
the home key should already be assigned to go back to the desktop as far as I know.
Hi yes I still have stock rom. Also my lockscreen doesn't work and when I push the keylock\power button it doesn't fully lock the screen as if I push the volume button the screen turns on. So im not sure what's up. Homekey as I said doesn't work anymore as well.isn't there someway to hack the phone to re assign keypad softkey function? Also none of these keys work on th KB as well. I still havnt upgraded to 2.3 yet. Seems like a hassle to unroot delete every thing and start over. Yes I have clockwork also TI backup pro
Any suggestions would be great

I don't use the stock launcher anymore. ADW and from what I hear LauncherPro both have preferences that change the home key assignment. I would upgrade to 2.3.20 though it's not a big of a hassle as you would think. I've sbf'd my phone twice and factory reseted everytime I upgrade a ROM. It doesn't take that long as long as you know what you are doing and you have backed up what you need. Google will remember your contacts and apps and settings if you tell it to. The only thing I have to setup are my non gmail email and a few apps that I have login info for. You don't have to unroot. You can just flash the new sbf and then re-root and you'll be updated (always flash with a full or near full battery) and I wouldn't be surprised if it fixed the problem. I've never heard of the soft key's not working on the stock ROM. They worked when I used it before we even had root.
The only way I can get my phone to wake with the volume button is to use "no lock" to turn of the lock screen. But if the lock screen is in place the only way to wake the phone is to press power and then use the sliders.
Hi ,
Any news regarding the home button lag ?
I don't mean the wake up lag, which is annoying too but it's hardware issue.
I mean the home button lag, which means any program I running, and pressing the home button, it takes something like 1-2 seconds to return to home screen !!
I know this issue has been raised 1000 times (!!!) and that is the exact reason I am talking about this, it's annoying so many people, so how could it happen that it hasn't been resolved yet ?!
This is 100% software issue , CM7 for example doesn't have that. But I don't want to use CM7 ....
I also have it and it drives me crazy.
Disable voice2go and the other parts of the samsung TTS thing, use titanium backup or something, you will need to be rooted.
As when you press the home button it is waiting to see if you are going to double press it to activate the voice control.

Did that, it doesn't help mate.
Oliwe has figured out a solution that requires some dev expertise:

I tried it myself and failed, but I'm sure ROM cookers will start implementing this ASAP.
Still a non issue
Hello,
So... I successfully remaped the left buttons to hardware Menu and Back buttons, but the top right is giving me headaches. It's set from 4 different places (Settings>Reader, NT Mod Manger, twl4030_keypad.kl file and from Cool Reader itself) to work as page back button, but it still turns the pages forward and I can't get what is forcing it to do so. I've tried to set it as a Menu button just from the twl4030_keypad file and it works as intended, but then again, when I set it to RIGHT_PREVPAGE it goes back to be a < button...
Any ideas how to fix this?
Anyone?
I've tried to bind PREVPAGE to the other buttons, but it doesn't seems to work at all. Am I doing something wrong or what?
Maybe the problem is that too many things are trying to control the button. If you want it to function that way for Cool Reader alone, why not let everything else off the hook and let Cool Reader do its thing? Just a thought. I've not encountered problems with hardware button assignments, but then I've only ever used NTMM to do the work.

Thanks for the reply!
It turns out that Cool Reader f*cked up somewhere. I re-installed it before, but I didn't notice that my settings were saved, so I thought the problem was somewhere else. BTW, Cool Reader's button assignment options didn't work at all - something was overriding them. What crossed my mind now was to delete the .cr3 folder and that fixed my problem.
P.S. Aaaaaand the problem is back! And I didn't even touched the Key actions... Interesting.
P.P.S. Changing the tap zones is messing with my hardware buttons... oh well.
P.P.S. So, when I change the left middle tap zone from previous to next page it also changes my top right button. Mystery solved. Right middle is also bugged.
