Just make a backup of your stock slot, wipe it, then flash whichever ROM you'd like to in that spot. I've never messed with other slots, have always just wiped stock and flashed there. Never had any problems. Hope this helps

Yup, same here, I always use stock. As long as you make a nandroid and just back it up on your SD card or PC, you are fine. If you ever royally screw up, you can always go back to your nandroid.

Nope... think about that - do you want /system on a possibly removable storage medium? I don't even know if its possible lol

The new safestrap allows for flashing custom ROMs into the stock slot. Try it, it's amazing!

You did that and it worked? What ROM? Did you do anything special? I tried that the other night and had to rsd my phone back to ICS and reroot and update! Sup with that. I used cm 10 and it made my phone go into fast boot mode. "Failed HAB check" I think is what it said.
you can only used it stock type modded firmware i think ? DHB and other stock like ones.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner... BDH is what I used.
Follow this method.
1. Create ROM slot 1
2. Load BDH rom how you like it
3. Nandroid
4. Activate stock rom slot.
5. Delete rom slot 1
6. Wipe everything X2
7. Restore nandroid into stock rom slot
8. Wipe cache and dalvik
9. Reboot
Have fun!

Should have looked at this yesterday. You the ss guru! If you hadn't responded I would have given up. My hands shook bad both times as I rsd my phone. I bricked and broke many in my quest for root and ROM.
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium
I know that feeling. Last night I got my phone stuck on boot animation didn't have safestrap installed so I had to flash the firmware through rsd. My hands was shaking too because the flash kept failing. Finally I had to do a factory data and cache wipe to get it to run. I won't make that mistake again lol
hello, I need help understanding how to uninstall twrp custom recovery and going back to stock custom recovery. i want to unroot and factory restore so I can update my s4. I really never took a lot of advantage of root with roms and stuff. I guess I really don't need it. but I don't want to brick my phone. exactly what do I do?

Yes, use Odin. I assume you have an i337 and you don't have mf3 installed. Get the mdl stock firmware from sammobile.com. You'll have to register but its free. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file. Use that file in Odin, PDA. Only have auto-reboot and f.reset checked in Odin. That will install the stock firmware and recovery on your phone.
Edit, a word of caution. As of now, there is no way to reverse your decision of wanting the mf3 update. Once you update you will not be able to put a custom Rom or recovery on your phone. There is limited benefit, my opinion no benefit, to the up grade. Yes you can put apps on your ad card, but only the apps and not the data do you don't save much space. It also take about a gig of additional space just for the update.
so it will be as if you just took it out of the box brand new, right? I don't want any files from twrp or anything to stay on the phone. I accidentally factory restored one time when rooted.... then after starting up the "new" device, the setup worked until one step which didn't allow me to surpass it... i used Odin and followed a youtube vídeo to unroot. also, will it restore my SD card...? if I take out the SD, will it be readable after I put it back in after the startup of the "new" device? thanks. and lastly, does it matter if ive freezes any apps via titanium backup? I've freezed the att updater so the update wouldn't remove root. thanks for your help guys. (yes I'm using the att i337 model.)

It will not factory reset your phone, it will simply reinstall stock firmware, stock recovery and rom. You'll have to factory reset once youre done to wipe everything

Odin will over write any of your frozen files you froze to avoid the upgrade. Factory reset will also delete your apps. Any pics, music, etc will not be deleted.
And yes to your sd card, it should still be readable. Odin shouldn't touch the external card.

and to unroot? another question, once I factory restore, and it starts up brand new, can I root, delete all bloatware, and unroot to use phone e normally? and isn't there a thing you're supposed to do to clear how many times you've rooted or not? I remember doing something with a tutorial I used that reset the count.

It will delete twrp and put the stock recovery on. There is always a chance of a brick when you flash. If you do flash it it'll probably take 10 to 20 minutes so let it do it's thing. Don't panic and unplug anything. Time goes by real show while you're waiting. I just flashed Odin today on my device and it seemed to take forever.

understand that you will likely have to boot into stock recovery and factory reset after the odin flash in order to boot past the samsung splash screen.
I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. I'm back on stock everything, unrooted. I want to remove bloatware first though. If I root, and delete all the bliarware I dont want through tibu, and later unroot, will the ota for i337 bring back the bloatware? Once again thanks everybody

Hey guys, I was going about trying to flash a rom and accidentally erased system and then tried to flash a corrupted rom. Obviously I ended up with no OS and no way of sending a file over to the internal storage. I tried all the Nexus 4 stock restore, all utilities. Everything.
Nothing has worked. I can flash the recovery easily but no way of getting a rom onto the internal and if I boot into OS, it will Loop the X symbol.

The strange part is, Fastboot works perfect. Only issue is with the Stock rom boot-looping on the X. And the kernel is stock. Is there software that will completely bomb the phone and revert it back to complete stock?

I've made a backup of the system partition, but I'm a little hesitant to install it on a slot. If something goes wrong with the slot, can I force a reboot, and a successful switch back over to stock? It seems a basic function...

Not really stupid is more like it after I hit restore my but puckered up and I was like oh **** if this doesnt work Im screwed no fxz and if I can fix it then no root.
Is anyone having any luck using Slot1, 2, etc?
I can boot from the stock slot no problem. Any other slot just reboots to SU2-3 recovery.
I've recreated slot 1/restored a couple times.
I realize that 3.65 (TWRP 2.6.3.1) is not KitKat "compatible", but wanted to check here to see if anyone has had any success.
Thanks!

What are you flashing? there are no roms for this phone. I just use SS to make backups in case I screw something up cant FXZ or you will lose root. So I don't know if they work or not.
Slots are useful for testing and tweaking without exploding your daily driver.
Sent from my XT1080
I guess so I just make a backup of stock slot then make changes any issues it boots into SS and I just install the backup saves time from making slots.

Has anyone been able to downgrade from 4.4 to 4.2 with this? I want to switch to Tmobile but took the 4.4 update.

No way to downgrade with this. Slots can't be created due to the new FS. Backup and restore to the stock slot work fine.

So I'm not the only one pulling my hair out over this? I'm on kitkat rooted with ss 3.65 when rebooting to recovery I get the little Andy on his side, only getting to boot into system. Wasn't sure if I'm doing something wrong, also can't seem to do a backup and use it as an activ to reboot. Whenever I press that option it informs me that no OS is installed

You can only use the stock slot as of now, possibly for good, for modding of any type. ROM slots will not work with KK

Backup stock slot then restore that backup in second slot.

Anyway, if I do that I can still restore the stock rom slot as well right?

Weird, don't see why it wouldn't work. But yes you could just restore stock rom after backing it up if the zip breaks it.
