I just found a file named "hidden_volume.txt" It's located in root/cache/ folder.
Contents of the file is: 0x40001\00
What is this?
Virus trying to hide? Rootkit?
Or just something normal for the system?
Do you have it on your phone?
How can I access this address in the file and get more information? I assume it's an address on the SD card filesystem or RAM memory.
How can I monitor what app/process/service is using this file?
Alliance rom, Koontz kernel, sgs5 SM-G900F
Google search gained nothing.
Also have this file but dont know what it is?

That file shows up in too many ROMs to be malware. Probably a configuration file for private mode or something similar.

If I remember correctly its for encryption services and is part of the package that either encrypts the external SD card or protects internal files.

Hi all,
I have downloaded a number of small pdf files on my I9505 (e.g. gym timetables from web browser and email attachments).
I was just wondering where these are stored so that I can delete them? Or are they automatically deleted after I close the viewing application (I doubt it).
Does anyone know where these are stored and therefore how to delete them?
Thanks
When i download a file its stored in the folder Downloads, on the internal memory.

How would the app work without root? It has to have permission.

No. No software is able to access that partition without rooting. It will not have the proper permissions.

There's always adb!
Its what developers use to test apps.
You can access system partition(can only copy files from phone not push), and data partition. android commander is something you would like to use as a ADB file manager. There's many guides online to get adb working. But this is all done on a PC.
Also you can access data partition with a non-rooted phone, and I'm sure you can copy stuff from it with root explorer for example. I'm not sure about putting files in that partition and editing .xml and .txt with root explorer though.

The solution would be to just delete the hosts file and restart the phone. On reboot play store will rebuild the hosts file and you should be able to connect.

This issue might not be due to host file... Even people running stock are having the issue and there host file will be exactly same as specified in OP

Hmm.. but deleting the host file and restarting the phone has always worked for me, whether i was on stock rom or custom... the other solution i can think of if this does not work is log out of google and login with a different id.. i think read this somewhere when i first faced the issue, but never had to use it..

Hi I get this error " hosts file cannot be deleted" using file explorer on stock kitkat
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk 2
Problem is not the host file. we need an ota by motorola to fix this "connection drop".
"Guides" like this should be deleted immediately as OP has no tiniest clue on what he is talking about. If access to Youtube/PlayStore were blocked via hosts file - it wouldn't work at all. Ever. Plus, a lot of guys with this issue are on stock ROMs with no root access and with locked bootloaders, so their "hosts" file can not be modified at all.
Being that said, OP is either:
a) troll
b) app developer (deleting hosts file would disable add blocking )
c) just another ignorant person

You will definitrely need Root for doing changes in hosts file.
Thus it is impossible that host will can be issue on unrooted stock as its hostfile is almost blank (localhost doesn't count)

well I can say that I have seen this isssue on several other phones as well. My secondary phone is also having the issue. My friends are also having this issue on other phones. So definitely not Moto's problem either I would say.

How do u know its completely wrong? Have you tried it and didn't work? Obviously it needs root access.. don't dismiss a method without trying it.. i have used it on samsung y, samsung s duos as well as moto g with full success.. and u must have a 100% correct method for sure, y don't u mention it?

That is just completely wrong. You really think an app (which BTW never uses root) rebuilds the hosts file!!!

Again have u ever tried it? When i say you require root access, i mean to say you require it to delete the hosts file as you will not be able to do so with the stock file manager without root access..

As I said, hosts file is irrelevant here, unless its been altered to have an entry for the hostname of the playstore in it which points to an invalid IP. But let's face it, that is not the case.
If you have no connection at all though then your issue is different to the original issue in this thread.
I want the moderator to ban me.
Very nice.It helps me about my gadget.

OK so as you have noticed kit kat does NOT allow third party apps to write to the SD card, this is stupid, but lucky for us we have a fix IF you are rooted
we have 2 solutions
1) using root explorer or something similar go to
/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
Click to collapse
and enter the permission that i have circled in red below (see attached) then it will work. Enter it so it looks EXACTALLY like it does below
2) the other option that MAY work is to go to the play store and download SDFix, that does the same thing (however myself and a few others are reporting that it isnt working as it is written)
big thanks to Mr Sam Epic for showing the fix, which came from Unknown Force in a SGS4 forum
****edit 4/19
had a few reports of SDFix not working, it didnt for me, i thought it was just a random error, what i did to fix it was to go into platform.xml and manually edit the permission so it looks exactally like the image below, i put in the extra return after the permission, there is not a logical reason why this fixed it, but it did
Also if you're going the non-rooted approach, although not necessarily preferred, it does work to just copy stuff with the stock my files app, as it is a system app rather than third party.

I'm having to copy my movie and music files to sdcard via the my files app. The app makers need to update so we can automatically save to sd.

If you are rooted and do the fix I listed above and then reboot you should be able to change the directory it saves to, if not uninstall and reinstall the app and all should be fine

Thanks, but will only root when there is a way that doesn't invalidate warranty.

Use an app called File expert. This app has been updated and can read/write to external xd card without root.
