Screen Mirroring - Chromecast (Needs KitKat & Root) - Galaxy Tab 3 Themes and Apps

Just linking to this useful app in case anyone hasn't come across it yet or would like to try it on their device.
It is experimental so it may not work for you, I tried it on my T310 running stock KitKat 4.4.2 & was able to cast my screen with sound to my Chromecast, only issues I had was the picture/streaming got progressively blocky after using it, had a slight bit of lag as well but your mileage my vary
Prerequisites:
Make sure Chromecast is build 17250 or newer
Make sure phone/tablet is rooted
Download and install/update the newest MirrorEnabler from the opening post.
Make sure Google Play Services is updated.
Reboot Chromecast
Reboot your phone
Run the Chromecast (v1.7.4 or higher) app again
Thanks @bhiga

[NEWS] B&N Annoucnes Official Google Play Support

This is a HUGE news in my opinion. Official support for Google Play/Google Apps coming to Nook HD and HD+ soon
Barnes & Noble's press release
http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20130502006907/en/Barnes-Noble-Announces-Google-Play™-NOOK®-HD
Engadget's Hands On video of the new support.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/03/...nd-nobles-nook-hd-and-hd-we-go-han/#continued
They say it will be rolling out Over-The-Air and provide access to other Google Apps such as GMail, Maps and Chrome (which is now apparently the new default browser)
I personally can't be more excited for this even though I've been running rooted OS and CM10 SD side by side ever since they became available.
Being able to access Google Play and having official support for many more apps will make HD/HD+ just that much more accessible and usable imo.
Now if only we could the the stock multitasking interface too....
UPDATE: New version number is Version 2.1.0, and you can manually download the update file from Barnes & Noble's website
Just select the Software Update link for the corresponding device and follow the instructions. (You just have to put the update file on the root of your Nook's directory)
I have no idea if it closes any of the rooting exploits, but my impression has been that since we got CWM working, we don't really have to worry about not being able to root now. Still please be cautious if you don't want to risk possibly losing the ability to root/downgrade/run custom ROMs. Just wait it out until the wise wizards of the forum figures out exactly what's going on.
That is fantastic news!! Will go and spread it now! Wow!! :good:
can't install downloaded apk apps...fail once again by B&N
I can confirm that keyboard and launchers downloaded from Play Store works as well as they did with previous "manual" installations.
There are still quite some apps that are just listed as "incompatible" from the Play Store, but having Maps and Chrome running without a fuss is great.
The paper-textured dock has been also been changed in favour of sleeker dark one, (with white icons in place of black ones now) and it seems like "white-on-white" problem is resolved too. (Might have to try out more apps though.)
I can confirm that Universal Root zip still works. Took me a while to straighten out the Play Store though. But it works too, even if you had flashed my gapps zip. May take me a while to test everything to be sure the zips still work.

Just for kicks I unrooted, erased and deregistered before updating to be sure to have absolutley stock setup. And it's working beautifully!
I have installed all my favourite apps with no problem at all.
I seems to me like the general UI is running a bit smoother than before.
And there is widget support in the stock launcher! (Maybe that was tehre before, but I ran ADW Ex right from the start, so I ddn't explore stock that much before.)
Edit: Making one nice discovery after another! Voice search works! And Zinio works as well. I thought maybe they would have found a way to block their competition in the magazine market, but no!

Do you think we will be able to sideload apps and install them through file explorer apps?
Ironically, I bit the bullet and installed the CM 10 Hybrid SD Rom less than 12 hours ago (after using stock root for some time).
Part of me is hoping this configuration has some advantages over the new BN stock but I'd love to hear from people about the advantages/disadvantages of using CM10 vs. the new BN stock so I can make a firm decision about which ROM I'll use daily.
Thanks in advance.

Not right away "out of the box" as it looks. I suspect rooting will be needed to "enable unknown sources", but I'd love to be wrong. Can't test right now though.

okay so I guess this is a pointless update for me then
This is definitely an improvement: I ditched my other launcher now that I can put non-BN apps and widgets on the homescreen. But I still can't install some of my favorite apps, like Yelp. These and others are listed as incompatible.
What version of Android is the latest stock Nook HD+ running? Is it still on ICS?
That is very cool. I'm not near my Nook now but I hope with this new version it will now show apps loaded from play store in the app drawer as well as in the recent apps?

It may be due to missing hardware features. They have added network location provider to this new release so many apps that need location are now compatible but other missing hardware like GPS or camera may still rule out many apps. GPS location can be added via patch, many apps claim to need it.
Yeah, I noticed the new location features in the update and was hoping that it would make apps like Yelp compatible. You mentioned a patch for GPS?

Yes, it is included in leapinlar's location services rev 1 patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 it adds android.hardware.location.gps.xml to device hardware features (and with bluetooth gps and Bluetooth GPS app it even works inside apps).
Not sure if Yelp specifically needs GPS though.
So we have "Official" support for installing the kindle app on our nooks now.

I haven't tried new stock yet, but the things that kept me going back to CM10 even after I had stock rooted and Play installed were the ICS/Jellybean recent apps display and the incompatibility of some apps. If they let launchers override the native notification bar, on-screen buttons and recent apps, I'd probably run straight stock.

Best Launcher setup for XBMC and FTV use

I'm getting and hopefully rooting my new FTV tomorrow, and was checking out the launchers. I am going to primarily use it for XBMC, but I'm sure that my wife will want to use the FTV stock launcher. Which way should I go to easily switch between XBMC and stock FTV?

Since you can't root the FTV for now you could use llama in order to make a XBMC shortcut on your FTV homescreen.
edit: I don't know what firmware version you will get, rooting is impossible with the german FTVs for now. Maybe you are more lucky.

You may be able to root. Before you even plug your FTV in, you should read and follow the guides on AFTV News. Start here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-a-new-fire-tv-without-blocking-root/#more-1403.

Is llama the preferred method? What exactly is llama anyway?

Since my FTV isn't rooted I can only tell you they way on how to add XBMC to the homescreen with llama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMt8gtnCSx0
There are probably better ways on how to start XBMC while keeping access to the Fire TV homescreen but this works just fine here, even without root.
I find FiredTV to be a very decent launcher. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782303
I second FiredTV...
I installed it so I have an icon for XBMC, Xfinity TV Go, the FireTV app, PBS, PBS Kids, Plex, Pluto.TV, and Settings. Everything else is hidden. If I want to watch something on Amazon Prime, I just launch the FireTV app, and I'm in the "default launcher". Hitting the Home button takes me back to FiredTV, no matter which of these I'm in.
Of all those, I think XBMC is our main use... I'm running Mythbuntu as my PVR back-end, and this makes getting to XBMC super easy, while still making it easy to get to other apps, and back to XBMC...
FiredTv for sure.
Easy interface for accessing sideloaded apps and also comes with an icon that takes you to the stock launcher if required.
This, combined with rbox's firetv xposed mods = perfection

i must say the same, i tried some asop style launchers.. and well i just cant get used to a phone interface on a TV.. i try but theres something not right about it. FiredTV is good to go over here.
I'm using the SPMC version of XBMC these days which is an Android launcher. Along the xposed and the rbox mods is what everyone else I know seems to prefer as well. I've built about 5 HTPC replacements for people and they are all happy with this setup as well.
1. Root
2. Custom recovery
3. Latest firmware
4. busybox
5. Stickmount
6. Lama (daily reboot)
7. SPMC
8. Xposed
9. Rbox xposed mods
10. Enjoy!
I have used FiredTV in the past. It was good. Nothing flashy but serves it's purpose. I had my FireTV rooted and thought I had Auto updating blocked but I guess I did it wrong. I lost my root so I guess I'm going back to FiredTV. What a bummer!

I've read the documentation on SPMC vs XBMC....mostly talks about the tweaks made...
From a user's perspective, what do you notice is the difference? Is it snappier? less crash prone? etc?
Could I install it next to XBMC and try it out? Or would I need to uninstall XBMC first?

I didn't notice much difference between the two. I started out with xbmc and switched to spmc because it fixed a few issues I was having at the time. They both work pretty well. They can be installed along side each other as they use separate days folders.

spmc is also in the amazon and google play app store so you can just download and install it from there and have a real icon on the amazon launcher without the need for anything else if you wish, i still use rbox exposed mod's and firedtv set to the alternate launcher but again, none of its really needed if you want to just use SPMC now since its in the app store.
My setup:
1. Root
2. Custom recovery
3. Latest firmware
4. busybox
5. Stickmount
6. XBMC/Kodi -- Helix Alpha 4
7. SPMC (non-launcher version)
8. Xposed
9. Rbox xposed mods
10. XBMC Launcher blunden - September 4, 2014 (from Google store). This latest version allows you to specify which version of XBMC you want to launch. You can easily go back and forth. It's important to have the non-launcher version of SPMC installed.

Maybe a fluke, but less crashes with SPMC than when I was running XBMC. You could backup your XBMC config with the FIRE TV utility and restore it to SPMC and be done. They can exist together on the same box, but I found no reason.
I'll set it up and run it along side my current installation. Haven't done an XBMC backup/restore yet, so this will give me a reason to practice that as well.
Thanks guys!

Install latest youtube on FireOS 4.5.3 and be able to login WITHOUT ROOT(!!!)

I am running FireOS 4.5.3 on Fire HDX 7" and it is not (and never has been) rooted.
Settings > Applications > Apps from unknown sources is On
I have the file manager with zip support installed.
Uninstall any versions of the 5 apks mentioned below.
Download this zip file:
https://mega.co.nz/#!OItCnSSA!VqBqlbwUa3h5VR0bmIXmRVBq4UeYo5bhBmzmflml3Vk
Open or extract it and install the apks in this order:
account manager 4.0.3
framework 4.0.4
play services 7.3.29
playstore 4.3.10
youtube 10.16.53
Reboot the tablet.
Go to youtube and you should get that normal google account login screen.
Login and presto! There you have it latest youtube apk with sign in ability.
Hasn't crashed on me (yet), but play store does not work (I've tried a few versions).
Yes I am aware of that youtube app with the blue icon in the amazon app store but I wasn't satisfied with it.
I haven't tried any other google apps yet with this combo.
I really hope this works for others. I just spent the last 5-6 hours figuring this out and it's now nearly 2am.
works for me
Youtube works.
Not for playstore gmail.
Oh that's cool I'm glad it's worked for others.
I just wanted to give something back to this forum cause I've gone to it so many times myself.
Found a gmail apk that works
Don't want to burst your bubble, but someone already figured out how to get YouTube to work on unrooted devices (along with other Google apps): http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372

Chrome should work regardless of framework (at least it did last time I tried). If not try Opera. Same underlying engine (Chromium) with a different skin.

Is it just me, or does doing this break other apps? Skype won't work properly (no contacts or message history), TuneIn radio won't even get past the initial screen. Why is this happening? Sorry I'm new to this stuff.
I should add that uninstalling these packages then causes everything to work again, so it does seem to be causing it.

Installing Google framework/services/store/etc on Fire OS is always a crap shoot as Amazon has its own set of conflicting services. Many get it to work (at least partially) while others experience problems. Installing framework/services on an unrooted device presents additional challenges....but also adds a layer of safety as you can typically install/experiment/uninstall without serious consequences. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your current situation; responding to "why is this happening?". You'll probably get it to work eventually with help from others.
That makes sense. I did manage to get Skype 5.1 working but anything after that breaks. Must have added a new feature since then that gets into that services conflict you mention. No luck with TuneIn, though I found an alternative for that.

If your family is looking for unfettered access to the play store you should definitely look for another device. It will be awhile before alternative roms become available to newer Kindles and most play store implementations are hacks at best. While the hardware is wonderful you really have to be wed to the Amazon ecosystem to truly appreciate the device (or be fortunate enough to have an 'older' model that can be rooted/unlocked and run a Google friendly rom).

I appreciate the frank reply. I was able to set her up with Chrome and Gmail which were her main concerns. The 1Mobile 3rd party marketplace had any of the other apps she was looking for. I also finished moving all her books over so she's going to take it for a spin this weekend when we head to the beach for a night and see how it goes.

If you are comfortable with 1moble (one of my favorite 'alternative' marketplaces) then many of the shortcomings inherent with the Amazon store can be mitigated. Chrome (more often Gmail) can get fussy without google services/framework. Opera is a nice alternative that utilizes the same core engine as Chrome. Gmail is a little tougher to directly emulate; plenty of alternatives if the Gmail app coughs up a fur ball (I happen to like Aquamail). You really don't need root but if you choose to do so Xposed framework adds a few nice touches that can further tame an HDX without compromising native functionality.
Hope it works out for you folks.
You can run Google services framework without root. People have been having issues with the newer builds however. If it does not work for you, try build version 7.0.99.

That will work for now (thanks @lekofraggle for the tip) but be aware Google is quickly adapting apps to leverage capabilities introduced in newer builds of services framework. For now that appears confined to Maps and Google Now (eg: card features) and primarly targets Lollipop.
You are welcome. I know about the impending issue with Google play services. Hopefully they fix the issues soon. Google maps works for now but complains.

Force stop, clear data and uninstall the update, reboot the NP and let it update Google Cast again. Also, if you have more than one NP give the players a unique name in the About section within Settings.

It's so weird. It works fine on mine. They're both updated with the latest Android updates. I also have the Chromecast app installed on my phone, I don't know if it even makes a difference but I am just trying to think of things that I have done.
You have the casting app updated? From Reddit: The problem didn't have to do with either Marshmallow or the most recent APK update (though the timing was understandably suspicious), but we're pushing an updated APK that resolves the actual issue.
You should see version 1.16.45911 (Settings > Google Cast) once you've updated.
You could try to downgrade the app if it still doesn't work: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...ast-receiver-1-12-28389-android-apk-download/

Hello!
Thank you very much for this app. I sideloaded on my FTVS and it works great with Spotify. Unfortunately I can't detect it with any other app like Chrome / Youtube... Is this app able to cast only sound?
I was able to test it with chrome tab cast and screen mirroring from Windows computer
Install Google Home on your tablet, phone, whatever and go to cast screen.
This works great. Just gonna keep stuff like roms\emulators on my tablet primarily now.
Thank you!

Hi josuelopezv:
What's so shameful. Developers give you a convenient to install android box without Google Play Service since you said you already buy it from Google PlayStore. But you leak it as piracy and don't think how many times developers spend to implement the Cast Protocol in house.

Same here. Casting from YouTube via Chrome on my laptop doesn't work but casting the whole screen does (never found a use for that though since the quality and latency make it pretty useless)
Yeah since I found a work around for the coming youtube/fire armageddon I'm not concerned. How are you casting the whole screen btw?
Dave
I use Google Home to steam everything and haven't had a hiccup. Even games work fine.
Thanks! I'll give this a shot. How is the apk in this thread different than the one in the play store?
Thanks for posting this. Is there any way to support the developer as this appears to be a premium version?

Why don't you find out for yourself? Kinda seems like a complete waste of time to register just to say this.
This appears to run as a chromecast receiver & NOT as a chromecast Audio receiver. I'm not sure why Google differentiates them but it would be nice to have a toggle in this app.
