Games lags - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Assassin's creed pirates lag so much here. Same issue with epoc2.NBA jam, batman, Spider-Man works great. I don't get it!
Omega rom 51 and omega kernel 1.3.
Cheers

Disabling lockscreen animation adds a lot of fluidity to the OS, much smoother and snappier and also disable S-Voice from the menu button. This should help you for better gaming i guess.

Already did this. Phone itself doesn't lag only few games

Maybe its bad optimalization.
Or do you use any task manager/ cleaners, antivirus, batery saver etc?

Lack of optimization. Somebody has done a test with the GS5 in gaming and he used an on screen CPU and GPU monitor and CPU/GPU usage is always sitting at 40% for most games and CPU/GPU never clock up to max speed.
His youtube channel is Chris Nacca

Shadowgun lags for me also.
I did everything to test it for the better.
I even OC my cpu and it was better. (but battery drainage was faster also)
Im using clean master and battery doctor too and guess what.....i found the easy solution and performance boost in shadowgun.
Simple....uninstall battery doctor.
After that small lag spikes remained cuz of bad game optimization (everyone facing that one) but the performance boost was like 20%.
Find some other alternative to save battery like greenify and setcpu clocking.
I realized that battery saving apps are more performance stopers and ram eaters itself then helping hands...
Try it and report back...

Do like this: the camera is working in CM7 2.3.3, right? the best 2.3.3 rom atm is from Ratch, right? join both and you will have a fully 2.3.3 rom..
ask to them, how to do it

Now, question. I have a battery drain issue on 2.2.1 miniCM6 RC2.
Phone runs very smoothly, but drains battery so fast.
From 100% to current 37% in less than 10h, and I didn't use so much. reality would be about 50%.
Installed brightenss fix, but lowest brightness is to high (cca 40% on stock rom)
Any solutions?
I tried to reduce proccesing speed to 600MHz, but then phone is so laggy and slow. On 650+ is very smooth. I don't get it. On RC1 processor was at 600MHz and ROM was smooth as now.
EDIT: changed using SetCPU and using powersave option instead of ONDEMAND in CyanogenMod performance settings.

i try RC2 without x8oc module, and use setcpu to lower min freq to 122.

I use CM7 J007 by jerpelea. Runs extra smooth at 729MHz...
However, EVERY ROM has micro lags when scrolling. Many friends call me crazy and they don't see that but it's there. Only ROM without micro lags I've tried was HTC's 2.1 with Sense - it's exactly like iPhone's smooth animation (no, I didn't had, I don't have, and I won't have iPhone, only cool thing about it is extra smoothness which is on X8 present only in Sense ROM).

How to do that? I didn't put x8oc.ko anywhere.
I just installed update.zip via xRecovery. Then I installed Brighteness fix.
Before I had RC1 with RC1 fixes. Without OC.
And min freq. is already on 122MHz.
In CyanogenMod Settings -> Performance -> CPU settings selected governor is ONDEMAND. I tried powersave, but phone is laggy with that.
Max CPU freq is at 710MHz. I'll try to put it on 600MHz, but how to go back on 710 if something goes wrong? Last option on the list is 600.

I'll do that when battery drains. I did that before with old roms. I saw no major difference.
Now, second question: Quadrant score is 888. CPU set to 729MHz. I didn't set it on boot yet. Phone runs even smoother than on 710Mhz.
I just got one reboot, but that's probably root apps related. (used SetCPU)
Second shot was 832.
Other with this rom get 1000 points or more.
I did all that sh*t needed to be done after flashing. (Factory reset, Wipe dalvik cache, Wipe cache)... so what's the problem?
I even don't use titaium backup, I install apks from sd card.

You have same problem as me.
I just tried Angry Birds Rio. and aTilt.
Angry Birds are not so laggy, there's a tiny lag when your bird flies, just after you throw it. Playable.
aTitlt is so laggy. You can't play. On 2.1 was as smooth as ****.
In fact, I don't play games and I don't care about lags. I want battery issue to be fixed. It's well know with all custom roms, but this time is just not acceptable.

Discharge battery. Plug the charger (wall socket, not USB). When phone turns on, go to recovery. Wipe battery stats. Unplug charger, turn on phone. When it turns off again, plug charger and charge it fully. Again, wipe battery stats. Charge fully again.

[DISCUSS] Underclocking

Hi guys,
I've read guides on using SetCPU to underclock the battery to conserve power, and hence I tried it.
What I did was to change the CPU scaling to 'ondemand', and created a profile that runs the CPU at ~300MHz when the screen is off. However, I've noticed a drastic decrease in battery life instead; the battery seems to drop faster while playing video games, and there was a humongous drop of 30% battery with one night's sleep (data is off).
Just wondering whether I did anything wrongly, and how do I achieve the most energy-efficient settings? (And any undervolting gurus here?)
Thanks!

The reason why the battery is draining faster when playing games while underclocking is because you're forcing the phone to work harder as its power is limited.
It's working harder to play games that it usually wouldn't have much trouble playing.

Since I have my CPU scaling set to 'ondemand', shouldn't it scale back up to 1GHz when playing games? Or does it only go as much as it thinks is required?
In this case, should I setup custom profiles when launching applications?

I'm not 100% sure mate. But by the sounds of things, it sounds like something (possibly a game or heavy app) is still running in the background while the phone's screen is turned off.
Sorry I couldn't help more, but I do definitely know the reason for the battery drainage is due to the PC working overtime while it's being told to only work at ~300Mhz.

[Guide] Get rid of lag in games / Interactive gov is bugged!

Hi guys,
I have the 855 version of this phone, and I have noticed that, even if Antutu scores are spot on (44k), in games such as GT racing 2 or similar I get a lot of lag.
Now, everyone will think "there are 1000 threads about lag, stick to those". Unfortunately, tricks such as getting rid of the thermal protection are really not good options, as the phone temperature will start to skyrocket.
There's a much easier and safer solution: root the phone and change the governor from interactive to conservative.
With interactive gov and CPU temp open in the background, I have noticed the CPU frequency bounces continuously up and down between 300mhz and 2400, even if the CPU temp is only 55c or so. This is causing the lag! Interactive governor is severely bugged, and this happens with any rom (I have tried both the stock 20h and the ChupaChups 4.2) and kernel (non AOSP at least).
Then, I switched to conservative, launched the game again, and guess what....now the frequency is nicely stable at 2457mhz throughout the entire gameplay and lag is gone completely. Temperatures? Totally fine: max 60c while playing and usually between 35 and 40 while whatsapping.
I literally tried everything to get rid of this damn lag, and the only thing that worked before this solution was to use a different kernel (chupa chups 2.1) and changing the governor...but I was getting crazy high temperatures, that sometimes touched 80c, and this was with a very heavy undervolt too! So I recommend to use the stock kernel, because it's the only one - for me at least - that grants good performances (and by that I mean no lag in games whatsoever and constant 2450mhz while playing) with good temperatures.
Any other option, including undervolting and trying different kernels didn't work for me, because either the CPU frequency kept shifting up and down every second causing lag, or - when I managed to keep it stable using different kernels and undervolting - the CPU temperature while playing got way too high (70c+, touching 80c sometimes).
To sum it up
1) Stick to stock rom and stock kernel (because of temperature issues)
2) Root
3) Change governor from interactive to conservative with Trickstermod (busybox required)
4) Enjoy smooth gaming experience and very good temperatures, with no significant throttle whatsoever!
Hope this helps!
as far as i know, conservative puts the cpu speed into the lowest possible, thus i thought won't be good for gaming performance.
nevertheless, i'd try for a few days and see if there's any noticeable difference.
thanks for sharing the knowledge, OP!

Theoretically you are right. But...interactive is bugged. Ondemand doesn't work (it will make your phone freeze) and performance will drain too much battery. So we are pretty much left with conservative.
Give it a try, and when you do, make sure you have CPU temp open to monitor both temperature and cpu frequency!
Let me know
Thank you! It really did the trick, gaming became MUCH better.
I tried RR3 - it became a lot better. On interactive it lags even in menu, on conservative it's rendering at 23-30 fps with slight not-game-breaking lags.
Battery
And about the battery? Will drain more in conservative than interactive? And will speed up the phone in all app or only in heavy games, when cpu is more active?

I wouldn't worry about battery life..
It seems that this working generally, phone is much snappier and smooth for me than on interactive.
Yeah...the reason is that LG did an awful job with the interactive governor, and what's even worse is that it's actually using it as the default one.
Pretty incredible how bugged this is.
Yes but I think it's possible to make script in init.d folder to run conservative on boot as default. Maybe someone make one.
I Will try this ☺only for curiosity! I need busybox installed too or trickstermod only?
I've been doing the same thing for a long time now. I use SetCPU to automatically switch to the performance governor whenever the screen is on, and interactive whenever the screen is off.
You may also want to consider disabling mpdecision and thermald also. One of the two (probably mpdecision) will regularly change the governor back to interactive if you don't.

That works to get rid of the lag...but my phone was reaching easily 80c.
Now, with everything stock, the frequency stays nicely at 2457mhz with no throttle at all and the in-game temperature only maxes out at 63/64c.
Thanks for sharing this brother...just switched to conservative in trickster and I'll see how it goes.
I'm on crash Rom stock kernel with thermal mod activated...
Don't have any temperature issues till now expert while playing heavy games for some time.
Thanks again
Are the settings in trickstermod applied as you change the setting ? Or do you need to apply them manually ?
Also, do they apply on boot ?

On the latest trickster version you hit the upper right settings icon and the first four option that appear are under the set on boot part.check the kernel setting to be set on boot and you are done.

Sol v2 profile for Hacker 10.1
(and how to get the best performance)
Sol v2 settings:
About battery:
Your battery is drained for two reasons, screen and rogue apps wasting cpu/network resources. I hate Facebook app with a passion. Sometimes banking apps are even worse. Check your permissions and ram usage. Use mobile Web when possible instead of app. Chrome is bad as well but can be tamed.
If you want to save battery dim your screen and ensure greenifly is installed. Dont greenifly keyboard, launcher or any messaging apps like viber and use xposed. Battery savings using governor is negligible and has no benefit except making your phone lag and pissing you off when u need it quick.
“Safe" Undervolt GPU and CPU.
CPU undervolt
Big 200-2100 - 75mv all steps
Little 200-1500 - 50mv all steps
(these are deemed safe, you may squeeze more but battery savings are negligible the goal is to reduce heat to prevent throttling while keeping stability.)
Overclocking is not recommended as the heat generated (and throttling) defeats the purpose.
GPU undervolt on lower frequencies only 266-600! Your phone will sit at 266 most of the time even while gaming. If 600 + is required and undervolted it will likely crash or lag from gpu compiler errors. (do not underclock gpu there is no benefit and it makes the governor work more)
Performance interactive on both.

To import now:
i posted a profile fron snapse. Try importing it and enjoy.
Also I noticed that avast and other an it viruses put a dent on speed (and are unnecessary im if u use common sense) your phone is mostly immune from Malware if you install only official apps and ones from xposed repository or from xda. so u can almost always uninstall those. Also to remember to disable startups using boot manager or another app. (u may need more then 1 app to nab all apps.
Make sure you place the profile into the correct location on your storage (the top folder in the screenshot)
I want to highlight to use cfq i
Because although it sucks im benches it is way better to use. (I used to use flops myself.) There's a YouTube video about it somewhere a guy who benched it by opening various apps side by side and timing it on 4 phones. I'll have to link it later.
Disclaimer:
This makes my phone awesome. You are more likely to win the billion dollar powerball then be bricked. But I am not responsible if you win the lottery. Back it up before you put it in and/or ensure stability check is ticked.
If this has helped you please give the Hacker OP a beer first then consider one for me.
I will make my own thread about profiles. So we can remain on topic on WETA_V13. Also It will help Hacker with his development.

Use powersave mode (even from full not auto on at 20% or whatever) would be the obvious thing. But also personally, I use ondemand cpu governer (nearly as smooth as interactive but less aggressive). I set a max cpu cap at 1296 on the little cores and 1600 on the big cores. Also go to application manager and stop and disable samsung push (helps standby a lot), galaxy app, and any other of the bloatware and background apps you don't use.
If you want to get really into it, there's a great thread I was part of a while back in general titled something like crazy battery life 8 hrs SOT+ something like that. It involves using app called disable services and disabling a lot of google stats/analytics services and stuff. I got mine up to just a hair over 7 hrs SOT on a 23 hr run off charger, so there's good life to be had. I usually use GPS too much now so I haven't been able to get that much lately though.

the problem is not much in the CPU as it is tested for higher temperatures but for the battery ... as the heat is definitely deleterious ..rather than putting mods (which modify the thermal) I recommend a good custom kernel or alternatively if you want to save battery use morpho (ex spectrum) obviously you must have the root

i've been using my note 7 with thermal mod for about 6 months now, and the highest temp i ever got was 47°c and that was me playing pubg on extreme+smooth settings with the charger on. be very careful when playing on high temps for long period of time as it will destroy your battery like it did with my redmi note 4.

Thx. I've tested it but I suppose it could give gain in performance while running MIUI' roms. On my CR Droid rom, it seems worst with it...

ok but guys do you realize what you're doing? if you play games that require a lot of resources it is obvious that the CPU and GPU heat up now if you didn't know there are pads specially created for this ... they cost about 20 euros, you place the phone in this pad and behind it there is a fan mounted and in addition there are function keys obviously it connects via Bluetooth, and for those who love these games it is the only real solution especially if you spend many hours playing, I have never had thermal problems indeed actually on a leEco the 2 yes but it was a problem that was due to the charging settings too aggressive. so since changing a battery today is not easy and above all it is better to save the phone with one of these pads ...
