HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCapSize = dword:0x0A (10)
change to dword:0x3A (58) and you will have Large & CIF resolutions.
Dmitry
can u explain better how to do it because when i go in i cant change the dword value and its # is 10 for me

Use any registry editor (like Resco Registry Editor or PHM Registry editor) and going to the HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\MainCamSupportCapSize . Default value is 10 decimal (0xA hex). Change value to 58 decimal (0x3A hex).
I modified the registry for these values and it does seem to increase the quality but not the image size of the pictures or video.

After registry patch the L & CIF resolutions will be available in video camera mode. Try to click on resolution icon on top bar or select it in options.
the new resolutions are
L = 320x240
CIF = 352x288
which are much better than
S = 128x96
M = 176x144
thanks for the info
i made the edit and it enabled the two resolutions in the options, but when i actually tried to take a video with those settings (either large or CIF) it came out as the same low resolution it normally does, but the video quality is even worse (very choppy). is there a way to get around this?

No problem. HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Recparam\MP4Large\Bitrate
default value 128000. I chaged it to 1024000 and now video quality is better.
hey, thanks for the reply...did what you said, and picture quality is better, but video is still very choppy and still much below the framerate id get while recording in medium. id be happy if I can just get it up to 15 frames per sec at this quality.
MJPEG @ 15FPS seems to be the sweet spot with Dmitri's tweak
Thanks for this tweak Dmitry! After spending few hours testing various settings, I found that using MJPEG @ 15 FPS got me the best results in both visual quality and framerate consistency (FPS for MJPEG can be set under Recparam\AVILarge although 15FPS is the default, if I recall right). Anything higher than 15-20 FPS with high motion videos will result in erratic captures.
Note also that you'll want a fat MicroSD card to store MJPEG videos as these can become large fairly quickly.
This is an amazing reg tweak, i knew it was a matter of time before this leaked out. This camera is more powerful than whats let on and i know it
Now if only we can get some frame rate tweaks in here that work
Well I actually got the frame rate to not be so choppy by just changing HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Recparam\MP4Large\FrameRate to 5 Hell you may even be able to go lower. Because that's all I kept doin an it just seemed to get better each time I lowered it.
Changing the framerate to 5FPS for Mpeg4 yields horrible playback results. It's not even worth taking videos with the setting at 5 because of the slow, jerky movements.

5 frames per second? That is REALLY choppy, maybe you meant 15?
i've done some testing and it seems like mpg4 just uses too much processing power to do the compression and that motion jpeg (AVI) at 15fps yields pretty good results. will try and do some more testing and report back.

my only problem with using motion jpg is that audio stream format doesnt work with tcpmp, so all my beautiful movie automaticly become silent films out side pocket media player
help
I messup. I changed the maincamsupportcaptsize and dont remeber the org setting. the 2nd problem is that i could not add change to dword:0x3A (58) it would only let me change from 8 to 58 but not the 0X3a?
Not sure if changing this messed up my MMS but I haven't changed any other feature. Right now after doing this hack, my MMS won't send out, giving me an error that says my image size of 16k or whatever is over the 0k limit?
Reseting to default
thanks for the info but I have tried that reg hack and it will stay at 58 until i launch the camera/camcorder function then i go back in and it is back at 10. don't know if i need to soft reset before i launch cam? any help would be a appreciated.

Same thing happened to me. Just uninstall your mms and re install it. It will work.
I have noticed that when I put videos that I have recorded on my droid x on my computer in the details the video was shot at about 15fps. I have the camcorder set to 720p hd and I thought it was supposed to 24fps. Does anyone know how to fix this. Also is there a way to change the video out put file from .3gp to .mp4. I saw you can alter the etc/media_profiles.xml but when I change the file to .mp4 it still outputs to .3gp. Any help would be appreicated. Thanks
Anyone knows if there is a hack to set a different default video resolution for the camera?
It drives me insane that some PMs decided that 640x480 is best for me and don't let me save when I change it to 720p!
Thanks in advance!
I was looking at the media_profile.xml file from the Xoom forums (posted and edited by bracken21, Thanks for the work) and noticed that the file was different than the Asus TF one. Instead of trying that file on my TF I modified the TF profile.
I have experienced no problems so far with this modified file but try at your own risk, replacing the file with the original should resolve any issues you might experiences, but no promises. I highly recommend backing up your own media_profile.xml instead of using my backed up original.
A few questions for anyone that knows.
For the camera app what is 'high' quality? I assume it is the 720p profile do to the outcome I had. I ask because in the media profile there is no youtube video quality but is on the app. other video quality names aren't listed in the app either.
What do the video decoder and audio decoder caps do exactly? I turned them off only because they where turned off on the Xoom, and I wanted to see if it prevented video from playing or caused glitch's (I saw no issues in the video I played)
I set the camera to the rear and "high" for quality then recorded a video before the changes and one after then transferred them to my desktop. The details in properties shows both at 37 seconds long and a frame rate of 1280x720. the data rate for the 3gp was 7478kbps while the mp4 was 20350kbps. Total bitrate increased from 7574kbps to 20446kbps. Frame rate dropped from 28fps to 24fps. file size increased to 93MB from 33.7MB. I noticed a small improvement in quality at full screen on my monitor, it was a slow video so I couldn't tell if it had more or less tearing.
more info: You will need to reboot to see any chances. setting any setting the camera can't use will result in the camera app force closing. I tried setting the frame rate to 40 in one profile and the camera app crashed every time I tried to access the rear camera (that profile was already selected so was auto loading). placing the xml with the correct framerate back into the /system/etc folder and rebooting fixed the issue.
Since it is a busy day today for me I just did some quick modifications. If anyone else wants to make a modified file with better changes (specially someone who knows audio/video better) it would probably be appreciated by all.
Placing this file where it needs to go requires root and a file browser that can mount the system folder in read/write.
The XML file should be placed in /system/etc. the full path is /system/etc/media_profiles.xml
changed:
All 3gp encoding to mp4 encoding
Rear Camera 720p quality bitrate from 8,000,000 to 25,000,000
Front Camera high quality bitrate from 4,000,000 to 8,000,000
Changed both "imageencoding quality from 90/80/70/20,000,000 to 100/99/95/250,000,000
Turned off videodecodercap and audiodecodercap
Again thank you to bracken21 for doing the Xoom's profile, which provided a base to go off of.
I have installed various 3rd party camera apps & despite increasing video recording bitrate in app settings, recorded videos all have 40mbps bitrate.
Can the media profiles xml be edited just like with older phones?
Has anyone else tried or had success with increasing the bitrate for video recording? Any input would be appreciated
Edit: found media_profiles in system\vendor\etc...going to change it and see what happens
