First impressions - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

I just upgraded to the 2014 edition. Long story but tablet was lost and I got the cash to replace.
I ordered the tab 's too but didn't even open the box. Too scared I'd be emotionally swayed. I was too used to using the spen for note talking at work or home. Probably 5pc of my use but still..
So I haven't seen significant lags. Seems snappy. Screen is lovely. The 4x resolution makes a brilliant improvement to text and handwriting. Audio seems decent. Tablet feels a little more plasticky and lots smaller
One disappointment. I thought 4.4 was out. Not for btu it seems. That's crazy. Hate these slow region updates
Although microusb is standard I'm not conceived the firm factor is good. The connector is too small and liable to damage or working loose.
Its a lovely keeper though. Just ordered a poetic slim case. I had the elastic back one on previous model but the clip would always get in the way.
Undecided on screen protector. May skip to get best feel. Is the screen pretty tough?
Any news on the UK update (I broke previous one after months of flashing so may skip. It was on its way back with a refusal to repair when it got lost in the system... Hence replaced. Yikes . What luck)

A few more thoughts after playing some more
- Lack of 4.4 is really irking me. Ugh.
- Trying to take notes in landscape format led to me constantly hitting the hard home button. I never noticed that issue on the old note (soft button).
- After using lecture notes on my previous note quite a lot, the auto full brightness of s-note during not taking seems unnecessary - is there a way around this?

On both my Note 8 & 10.1-14, upside down is my response to that button. I prefer the 2012 arrangement.

Any design flaws?

Hi,
I'm buying a windows mobile based phone, and so far every one I've looked at has some kind of design flaw.
I've already bought and returned a HTC Touch Diamond, because it had a nasty orange cloudy patch on 1 part of the screen.
What I've found so far is:
Touch Diamond: Orange clouds on screens, and random phones with bad contrast.
Xperia X1: Phone housings just crack of their own accord, not due to abuse.
Touch Diamond 2: Allows dust to get between the screen and the touch panel. (This is especially bad for me as I work in a very dusty environment, so the phone would end up full of dust pretty fast.)
I really like the look of the Touch HD, and after searching so far I haven't found reports of any flaws.
So does the Touch HD have any of the above flaws, or any flaws at all?
Or if anyone can name any WM based phones that have specs similar to the above I'd appreciate it, preferably VGA resolution or above.
Thanks in advance.
Well early on there were a lot of people complaining the paint wore away from the metal casing very quickly, although this never happened to me. I don't think there are too many common problems or at least none that I've had myself.
the paint chipping happened to me also, especially around the mini usb connector and also around the stylus area. The edges of the screen are also starting....
Small detail, not very annoying, but hurts when you paid like 500 euro for the device.
have had it for just over a month, I think the raised metal section on the back cover seems to scratch fairly easily (a bit like the X1's back cover, actually) - I would advise putting InvisibleShield or something similar *specifically* on that section.
back cover is a *whee* bit loose from me pulling it open and closed to hard / soft reset the HD, but otherwise of issues.
Wish it had a lanyard hole, though.
Buttons don't light up... How can you see the buttons in the dark? There are little ways of reflecting the screen light, but you know what I mean, buttons that don't light up?!?!?
Smallest ever notification light is on the power button, how you see this when you just put the phone down next to you I have no idea! Bit pointless if you as me.
Back case is a bit 'loose', but thats after constantly taking it off to flash my phone. You could just pad the back with a sticky pad on the inside of the back cover anyway which would stop it from happening.
Haven't had the issue with scratching the 'bulge' around the camera lens, its brushed metal anyway so can't say you'd notice that much.
Other than that, the phone is mint... Get one...
Well for scratches on the metal casing i don't know cause i always look to put it on something soft when i use on the table or other rough surfaces.I watched a video on youtube which showed how hard is to scratch the screen and the back have a look...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVIPSK0P2EY
But just in case if i were you i would get one of these
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH-CPWCPCco&NR=1
Well i've had mine 2 months, i keep it in the material sleeve it came with and have the screen protector on and as of yet its been fine.
The screen protector could do with being replaced as there are a few scuffs on it. Very good device though, i've been very pleased with mine. I've used iphones and was never impressed by them. The only flaw i would pick up would be windows mobile itself... I do get occasional error messages as per windows desktop but nothing major.
If you don't mind there being no hard keyboard then i'd say its a fantastic device.
It's really very annoying
buy this never happened to me.
6 months in...
For “new” potential users I’m 6 months into using my Touch HD.
Good points.
Screen – I use Pocket Informant with mini text in the month view and I can actually read enough of each entry for each day of the month to plan at a glance.
Any kind of detail to look at and the screen helps, it is both large enough and has good enough resolution to see detail. The Iphone looks bright and very crisp but doesn’t get down to the text and other detail the HD can.
Size – it’s a good compromise between screen size and pocketability. It’s also quite slim.
Battery life – I’m pleasantly surprised – it lasts a good 2-3 days and using stuff like CoPilot as a SatNav doesn’t pull it down too quickly.
Stability – a few resets but relatively few and usually because I’ve been a dumbo about doing something.
Multi tasking – recently used the phone on a Bluetooth headset, whilst also guiding the caller using the satnav and also looking up the company he wanted on the internet…all at the same time – stunned it all worked, I even managed to navigate between the various active “screens”.
The “What’s that” factor! – most average “joes” have got into Nokia, Motorola, Iphone etc but the Touch HD is a relative rarity – so if you want to be different!
Phone – signal reception and call quality beat my previous Motorola Rizr Z3 hands down. Also my boss has an Iphone and his call quality is awful. My Touch HD is almost like using a landline – certainly better than the last 3 dedicated phones I’ve had.
Pulling out the stylus wakes the device – great and so obvious!
The actual device itself is still as new! I do use a case though.
Loads more…
Bad points.
I don’t use “touch flo” – many of the things I need to do mean using the stylus so for me its either all or nothing – TF doesn’t do for me!
Few hard key options – I used to have a one key push to bring up my diary (HP4700).
Useless LED “alarm” light on top – too small – too dim.
Camera – sunshine and its OK otherwise not great – no flash etc.
Battery life – it’s good but we are all waiting for more! Surely everyone wants at least a week without charging so you don’t lug a charger everywhere you go.
Stupidly small space of a couple of lines to answer text messages – duh! (I know there are fixes but I’m cautious about warranty and unrecoverable ****-ups!)
Installed…
CoPilot live 7. Works well (especially with the recent free screen resolution update to suit the HD)
Pocket Informant – best PIM/Diary/Contacts program I’ve ever used – I have a lot of diary stuff and quick access to good info.
Magic Button – useful although somewhat overtaken by changes in WM6x
Gsen – tweak for the G sensor options.
HD tweak – useful for customising a load of twiddly things.
Memaid – cleans up a bunch of iteme WM6x leaves woolly.
Pocket TV – useful for viewing various “movie” formats.
Resco File manager – MUCH better than the native WM6x file explorer – how can you live without it?
Accessories…Piel frama case – its ok but the leather around the screen blocks left margin stylus actions slightly (I’m left handed). Also it would be better using a magnetic closure instead of a popper, you can flip a mag closure shut with one hand movement but not the popper version. The front cover is a bit too soft so it would still allow something to crack the screen at a push. It also means if you receive a call by the time you’ve hauled the thing out of your pocket you’ve carried out some unknown screen clicks by gripping the case. Having said this I’ve tried two other cases and gone back to this one.
Thanks for all the replies.
If the paint chipping is the only problem I'll buy one, I'll be getting a case for it so hopefully that will protect it.
I'm moving from an iphone which I managed to keep in pristine condition, right up until I lost it
I tend to use the web browser quite a bit during the day, what kind of battery life could I expect out of the HD with say 2-3 hours browsing on 3g?

SGN My notes on design&funtionality

Was not a hard decision of buying, whereas I was in search of a 7"tablet replacement with easier calls. But as just after its release I read many disappointing messages here in XDA, I decided to write my first impressions (3 days usage). Most are the answers to the previous user issues, which were also my drawbacks.
1. Call quality: I hear perfect, ppl hear perfect. The biggest fear of an uncomfortable call is indiscreet.
2. Display: More than perfect. Very bright, so that I have to limit by a 30%. Everything is crystal clear, seems no color interferences, crisp fonts. Just as the most users mentioned, the same. I feel lucky to not have that pinky shades, grayish or blurry regions, dead pixels. pentile or rgb? a big nonsense.
3. Connectivity: Wireless has no problem. At least inside home. Router is in one room, from both stores the transfer is as fast as it can be. 3G>no problem. BT file transfer is still not tested. Just tried the bt headset, it's still the same, still sucks. I guess nothing about SGN, I hope. Standard mini usb socket was a must, and there it is.
4. Material: Used plastic material seems classy, but not rugged. I prefer more protective, softened side and corner parts without a need for a case. The flipcover case is a good idea, replacing the tiny absurdly thin back cover, but the cover is so easily detached while using. No locking, just pull and its aparted. Its sure in a short time abrasion is possible. While opening the back it sounds like cracked. But still changable back cover is a well thought idea. Device is really so lightweight thus I am looking for cases to make it heavier Being weightless its quality feel decreases a bit.
5. Buttons: I agree the volume rocker is placed to the wrong side, accidentally pressed many times. Upper side is better I guess. (but who cares, its too late, please next time ask us samsung). The capacitive buttons are also not wanted. You have to be careful all the time not to press. Is it so hard to function the power button as a shutter while camera is active?
6. User interface: This is the site for all modifying the interface functions, so only a few to add; the 5 main shortcuts should be arranged by personal needs. (or there is a way already?) Also the menus should be viewed in landscape position as in galaxy 7" tablet. If its said to be a tablet. Its annoying to turn it every time while using landscape. BTW why everyone is obsessed about sliding? Saw some movies guys saying hmmm its sliding really fluent. Everyone tries to test how it slides, all comparisons made on this. Whats the point?
7. Audio: Loudness is enough. But more is always appreciated. Especially for a deaf as me. But anyway sound in terms of loudness, and clarity is better than I expected. In fact its not enough to tell but I found its quality very very well. People here discussing the sound issue should have devices manufacturing faults, or are really obsessive audiophiles (I thought myself to be one, actually I prefer to pay thousands to a car audio system) So nothing lacks about hearing. But its a fact, to get best results in low and high freqs one should prefer lossless audio.
8. Video: BRRip movie of 9000kbps-1080p plays smooth. No gaming experience and will have no.
9. E-book: Bigger display is better, so not good as my 7". But the best option as a handy set.
10. Size: I feel its my ideal phone size with my monstrous hands. One handed usage is easy for me. (used 7" easily, thats not a challenge now)
Again I think the ppl who mentioned "SGN is embarrassing to make phone calls" are exaggerating. ( I have a standard 1/8 proportion head size). (ok I will not lie; a lilbit tall maybe)
11. S-Pen: Great toy. Works with a delay (in msecs.) but still usable. Great for daily sketches. (Not for taking notes, I completely forgot handwriting)
12. Battery: 1 day with nearly full usage.
13. Kies: Sux. Go change the name first please.
14. Accessories: Anyway people will drop it more than the previous little sized phones. So a more ergonomical handy case is needed, maybe with finger holders/stickers/ on it. Flip covers are a must but not user friendly. Otterbox>a must. I guess in a short time the acc. producers will wake up and make more options, I am sure this phone will have more sales than everyone expects.
15. Pocketability: Of course.
Conclusion: This phone is great in all aspects. People are sharing the problems they face, but it is normal every product to have production related errors, with acceptable ratios. I am lucky about the manufacturing, hope also lucky in using it without dropping, stolen etc.
ps.My previous phone was an iphone4, now my sis uses it, I really cant txt anything without false. Later I fully replaced it with galaxy7" due to my need for a bigger display.
ps2.(and just before SGN for 2 months I used an old nokia 3110, great phone with 6 days battery on excessive usage. Except the last 14 titles everything is same compared to SGN))
Good to hear that . .
Good to hear everything is working great on your end.
Hope I do not ignore some issues. I again try to find something to annoy me, especially the display faults. . But nothing. Somethings wrong here. Nothing in my life goes that well. Tomorrow will go n buy an insurance package including loss to robbery. Technology never catches my losing speed.
Unless your being sarcastic shouldnt you be happy that you cant find any faults on the unit that you got?
I meant no sarcasm; Before buying I almost accepted the display problems you mentioned b4, bad audio is ok also. But the bad call quality was not acceptable. Anyway, just 1or2 of those issues should be acceptable. But together 3 or more problems, the device loses its charm. I was sure to face those issues, so although I found really cheaper smuggle SGNs, without hesitation bought from official store nearly twice the price with 2 years warranty.
if now there is no problem that means will be bigger ones. Like losing it. Karma! Also Im sure day by day as getting used to it, I'll find many missing-malfunctioned things to ask here.
i'm going to have to disagree with you on the buttons since this is how all samsung smartphones are arranged. It wouldn't make sense to change that now
Yea I know that from 7"tablet, but also I many times pressed its 4capacitive buttons by mistake. However note is a phone (I decided lastly, its a phone) and 1 handed usage is necessary many times. The back >lower right button is pressed unintentedly with inner palm, oppositely if you intend it's hard to reach and press this time. 2 hands, no problem. I wonder if developers can make customizable buttons. (ICS will make this as i understand?)

[Q] TF810 vs Ativ 500T

Seems simple as they are almost the same we should go for cheaper one...but...
is getting Samsung really a better deal?
Your thoughts? Which hybrid with Atom is the best choice and why?
I own the Samsung 500t. What I like about it besides being $200 cheaper, is the rotation lock button, full sized USB port, and a slot to store the s-pen. What I don't like is the glossy slippery plastic back, the weak speakers, and lack of second battery in the dock.
The TF810 looks like it has better build quality with mostly aluminum and some plastic, shouldn't be slippery, I think the "Quad-Speakers" are probably going to sound better. It's got a brighter Super IPS+ screen which helps if you need to use the tablet outside. And it has a second battery in the dock. Oh and it is just better looking too.
The Atom is okay, but it's video playback kinda sucks. It seems many of these Atom tablets have various driver quirks that are still being worked out. Things just don't seem to be quite ready yet and I'm already second guessing the wisdom of spending $750 on the Samsung. So I definitely wouldn't pay $950 for the ASUS (with dock).
I'm looking at the HP Envy X2 also. HP has it on sale for $750 (not sure how long this sale will last), that includes the dock. I really like the all aluminum build and the latch mechanism doesn't stick out as much as other tablets. It's also get a second battery in the dock, but has no stylus or a Wacom digitizer (apparently uses some cheaper digitizer). And some day the keyboard isn't that good either.
Seems like all the Atom tablets have some downsides that we have to figure out which ones we can accept.
I'm also thinking about just giving up on the whole keyboard docking thing and saving some money and getting a 10 inch ASUS VivoTab Smart. At least it'll make a better tablet being lighter and easier to hold. And I can prop it up in a stand and use a bluetooth keyboard. And lastly I won't feel so bad spending so much money to be a first generation Windows 8 tablet guinea pig.
Lenovo Lynx is looking pretty good too. $600 for the tablet, $150 for the dock.
http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/tablet/ideatab/lynx-k3011/?menu-id=learn&ref-id=learn
Being a Lenovo that means the keyboard should be pretty good, and the keyboard dock has a battery. Built quality looks quite nice overall, and a textured back appears grippy and finger print resistant. It has no pen though. And what really makes me nervous is the specs say the micro SD slot supports up to 32GB. No SDXC in 2013, seriously? I'm really thinking that's got to be a mistake, but I'm not sure. It's definitely a deal breaker if it isn't a mistake.

That is a true downside. I got Galaxy S3 and I have dropped it few times beacuse back has no grip at all , I suppose laptop/tablet will be less mobile than phone but still it should allow me to carry it in safety.

My thoughts exactly. So fat I have only seen 500t in reality as Vivo Tab is not in shops yet... but I just like the way it look.
One more downside of Asus in Poland is TERRIBLE warranty service. Services are being run by small companies that have agreement with Asus Poland and in most cases they blame user for everything - standard reply is "Seal was broken/tempered with - warranty void" even having pictures of it before send for repairs is not helping .

What exactly are your issues?
This device that I will buy has to be able to play (smoothly) most video formats, most popular being .mkv 720p.
If this has similar problems to "old" Tegra 2 devices (remeber?) than it is a BIG PROBLEM.
On the other hand I used to have old Asus 1201n netbook with dual-core Atom 300 and first gen. Nvidia Ion onboard and it played everything without an issue (12" screen with 1366x768).
So... what is going on here?

Saw it... don't like it either. Had HP/Compaq in the past and always had problems with them.
Since hardware of HP and 500t is the same I would go with Samsung in this one (I guess).

I was considering it, but in my case size of screen matters . When I write texts I work with few windows an 10" is just to small .
What's the difference between the tf810 and the tf810c? Is there a tf810 with LTE or any cellular connectivity?
Also the Samsung device looks to be a afterthought device from Samsung. Avoid
If its possible, I'd say wait another season or two for more competition.
If not, go TF810.

Can't wait I am waiting last 2 year to replace iPad with something that will do what I need.
I need Windows to work, I need mobile device to work away from home during weekends ( yes I know)
And I dont want just laptop as I has to be entertainment device as well.
Why do you say: Samsung device looks to be a afterthought device...?

In terms of the Samsung device, its build quality looks to be just as bad as it's phones. Samsung laptops are probably the best in the world (Series 9) To see the ATIV coming from them is a clear sign that they didn't really put much thought into it, especially when you compare it to DELL and ASUS' hybrids.
Looks like we're in the same situation. I cannot wait either :-/
I just posted this so maybe you'll find some help alongside of me.

I have a TF810C and it's beautiful, the battery life is quite incredible. I consider this device perfect, except for the downsides:
-Slightly visible pixels at normal viewing distance, due to lowish resolution screen
-The pen bugs out when drawing 1cm near the edges of the screen
-The pen lacks drivers, and so does not work for Photoshop or nearly anything else. It works with some Windows 8 apps and both desktop & metro OneNote. When it does work, it works really well.
-Tinny speakers that are situated at the back of the tablet. They get a little bit distorted.
-No complex gestures for the touchpad. I like to tap on the right click area instead of pressing down, but the drivers for the tablet don't allow this!
-Dodgy, dodgy chipset drivers. Expect a BSOD every 2 days, sound that completely breaks until you reboot once a day, stability problems, unresponsive touchpad when waking from sleep, etc. These can happily be fixed by installing Samsung/HP/Acer drivers.
-No ASUS support at all. Drivers are not being updated, and the website doesn't even list the device correctly.
-The CPU can't handle fast-moving 720p 10bit .mkv files in VLC Player. Media Player Classic works, but it breaks for complex subtitles. Thankfully, a kickstarter for Windows 8-style VLC Player has been funded, and may offer better performance.
...And that's pretty much it for the problems. Every last one of them.
The tablet is thin, light, shiny, has a colourful and bright display, well-balanced with the keyboard dock, brilliant in every other way.
I can definitely recommend it, and hope that ASUS will eventually get around to fixing these problems rather than making users depend on other devices' drivers.

It's fortunately not as bad as the Tegra 2. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue or maybe just a driver issue. I have trouble playing back some 1080p videos, there are noticeable frame drops. Stream HD video from Amazon Prime or YouTube gets choppy sometimes (not referring to buffering issues) as it's dropping frames. The ABC Player app in the Windows Store also drops frames. The Netflix app however seems to work flawlessly. And if I download 1080p YouTube videos and play them back with VLC that seem to work fine usually. 720p MVK files work most of the time, think I've had some higher bit rate ones that got choppy sometimes.
I have a smoother and more reliable video playback experience with my Kindle Fire HD. I'm hoping this is just a driver issue and things will get smoothed out soon.
Other driver issues...
Wireless sometimes has trouble reconnecting to an access point with bluetooth is being used. Some have also mentioned dramatic slows with wifi using bluetooth, though I haven't done any file transfers while using my bluetooth mouse yet, so haven't seen that first hand yet. If I disable the bluetooth the wireless never seems to have trouble reconnecting, only with bluetooth on.
The keyboard/trackpad don't seem to go to sleep when the tablet does. With the tablet in the keyboard dock, if I close lid this often causes the tablet to wake back up, even the screen will come back on. And it make stay on. I've also found that apps I didn't open will open up after I close the lid. I the tablet coming within close proximity of the trackpad while it's close is causing it to register clicks or interaction and wake up and run apps. I now have to manually press Fn-F5 to disable the track pad before closing the tablet lid on the keyboard. This seems to help a lot and now the tablet will go to sleep most of the time. Hopefully a driver update will make the keyboard/trackpad also sleep at some point.
However I don't think the keyboard/trackpad is the only issue preventing the tablet from going to sleep. Seems like if I have some applications running it has trouble sleeping as well. So if it doesn't sleep I may need to close some apps or go back to the Windows Start screen.
The audio is inconsistent. Sometimes the volume sounds good and sufficient and other times I have a real hard time hearing it. It's different on an app by app basis. Hopefully this can be improved through drivers.

I seem to run into big cons with each tablet I look at...
Samsung 500T, slippery back, no secondary battery.
ASUS TF810, expensive, no pen silo.
HP Envy X2, No pen, poor keyboard.
Acer W510, Too small, poor keyboard.
Lenovo Lynx, No pen, 32GB SD limitation.
Lenovo Tabet 2, No keyboard dock.
Dell Latitude 10, No keyboard dock, too small.
Pick your poison. I'd prefer a keyboard dock that converts the tablet into a clamshell laptop design (so I'm not a fan of the Surface kickstand and type cover design). 10 inch tablets mean the keyboard is going to be too cramped, so the W510 is too small (and the Dell is too if it had a keyboard).
Originally I didn't care about a pen, however after using the Samsung 510T for a while, I'm starting to realize the pen is pretty nice to have. It helps with desktop apps, such as when I want to highlight some text in the browser, which seems to be impossible to do by finger. I don't ink on my tablets, so the pen is just to make working with the desktop apps easier. And I need to be able to store the pen in the tablet otherwise it'll be hugely inconvenient. This is probably the one con I can overlook, I think I could live without the pen, it's just something I'd really like to have.
Seems like on the Lenovo Lynx has the 32GB micro SD limitation. I already own a 64GB microSD card and I got to be able to use this with my tablet. 64GB is going to already be cramped on the tablet (only about 32 to 40GB is available depending on the size of the recovery partition). I'm hoping the 32GB limit is an error in the specs list, but it's mentioned more than once in different places.
Lack of secondary battery is more an annoyance. So far I've been able to get through an entire tablet with my Samsung 500T despite not having a second battery. I'm also not using the tablet constantly all day long, but I do use if frequently through out the day. And the battery life of the Atom is already impressive. So it's disappointing there is no second battery, but it's not a deal breaker.
A slippery back on a tablet almost is a deal breaker. While I don't feel like there is any danger of dropping it, it's so huge, so it won't slip out of your hands that fast. But it does make holding it even more awkward than the weight and size already make. Fortunately this potential deal breaker issue is somewhat solved with a skin I put on the back from Decalrus. The skin is smooth, but it is still a decent improvement than the glossy plastic of the tablet. It doesn't feel slippery anymore.
At this moment I'm probably going to end up keeping my Samsung 500T. If the Lenovo Lynx supported 64GB micro SD then I'd be highly tempted to switch to that. However if the sleep issues with the Samsung keyboard keeps bothering me, it's possible I just may give up on a tablet+keyboard=laptop dream and just go with a pure 10 inch tablet without keyboard and get an ASUS ME400 (VivoTab Smart) and save myself $250. And wait for the Bay Trail tablet at the end of the year.

One positive thing about the 500T. Despite some driver issus with the wireless, it seems like Samsung has been doing a good job with driver updates. And the tablet has been quite stable. I've never had a bluescreen of death and don't need to reboot it.

It seems a couple people posted about the slippery back of the Samsung ATIV 500T. I have owned this tablet for about 3 weeks now and I have had no issues at all with the material on the back of the tablet. Honestly I dont even feel like it is slippery. Its not like my fingers glide across the back when I am gripping it. Or I have never set it on a surface and feared that it would glide to the other end and fall to the ground. Just my opinion.

The back is smooth glossy plastic. When your hands are perfectly dry there is no issue. Unfortunately for us humans, up to 60% of our body is water and most of us have a little bit of moisture that forms in our palms. So unless you are constantly rubbing your hands dry and wiping the back of the tablet with a cloth, it's going to get slippery for most people.
I have no fear it's going to just pop out of my hands like a wet bar of soap. But it's difficult to hold in the palm of one hand while interacting with the screen, because it keeps slipping.
This back is one of the big reasons I'm returning mine. It's just too much of a hassle.
In all those devices with 64GB SSD - how much space is left for user?
A base Win8 64-bit install will use ~15GB, counting pagefile, hiberfile, etc. (size highly variable on the amount of RAM installed, among other things). Adding things like Office and the legacy .NET frameworks will drive that up somewhat. Realistically, If there's a recovery partition (likely), it'll probably be at least 5GB and possibly as much as 15GB (if there's a ton of pre-loaded crap) but that just depends on where you get it from, and you can create external recovery media (flashdrive or similar), nuke the recovery partition, and extend the main partition into the space. Realistically, I'd say you should expect to have 30-40GB of fully usable free space - you can go higher than that, especially if you disable hibernate, but it will slow things down if the storage gets too full.
Thanks for the info - that is all I needed to know.
As far as I understand there will be no problem in moving recovery partition to USB drive/NAS disk/ or even to cloud (Skydrive) just for storage?

You can move it to a USB flash drive, it needs about 8GB of space. I probably wouldn't put it in a cloud drive since if you actually need it it'll need to be on a USB flash drive anyway.
BTW, with my Samsung 500T, I sometimes had to reboot twice before it would recognize the USB recovery drive (USB boot is weird on this thing).
Hi Guys, I had both the Ativ 500t and now the TF810. For me the 500t seemed slower and seemed to freeze. so I returned it and last week I got the TF810 for my Bday. It is so much better quality and performance. I also had a huge problem with the keyboard disconnecting on the 500t. The keyboard is soo much better with the TF810 and the battery adds atleast an additional 8hours. All this aside I ended up winning a contest at work and will receive the surface pro when released so I will probably sell the TF810 and throw in the Keyboard for free. It turns out we just missed out on the extended return with Amazon holiday because Adorama is only 15days into the new year.
Out of the 2 the TF810 for me was the far better machine. Granted I have only used it for a week but everything from the Pen on is so much better.
Great to hear that my decision to spend more and get Tf810 was/is a good one
Before you sell the TF810, it would be interesting to observe your comparison with the Surface Pro. I have the Surface RT and love it, but I'd like to see some comparisons of the x86 options. The Surface is very tablet-y; it can be used as a laptop (I have the Touch Cover, which works but is not perfect) but even with the kickstand and all, it feels a bit more natural as a tablet. I'm worried that Surface Pro may try a little too hard to be a tablet (despite its disadvantages in weight, thickness, etc.), and end up being good at neither.
If I still have it when the Pro comes I will do the comp video. But right now it is on EBay with keyboard included for only $799 so I doubt it will last long. As it is priced to sell.

Thoughts on Z3 after a couple months of use

This is the most expensive phone I ever bought and I'm pretty satisfied with it, and also the one I have the least amount of gripes with, but it's not perfect unfortunately. My previous phone was the Galaxy S4 which I absolutely loathed from day one (made me wish I never exchanged my Xperia S for it), and the Z3 was a huge jump in quality compared to it.
Things I like a lot about the phone:
Stereo speakers sound pretty good (and by that I mean you can actually listen to it without wanting to tear your ears off), I actually like to listen to stuff using them, on the S4 and XperiaS the sound quality from speakers was unbearable.
Screen is nice, compared to S4 it's a bit less saturated but it seems much more neutral and accurate, white is actually white and not yellowish like on the S4, but black depth is obviously not absolute, but still pretty good. I think I prefer this screen to the AMOLED on S4 and AMOLEDs in general.
The phone is extremely fast and smooth, I'm a smoothness freak and I couldn't stand how laggy the S4 was.
The waterproofing is nice to have, makes you worry a little less about rain and water spills when using the phone near the shower or stuff like that.
Battery life is great, it lasts 3x what my S4 used to last. I still can't get a full day when I do extra heavy usage with hours of google maps.
Camera is pretty good, I don't know why everyone complains about it, it's not the best on the market but it's still in the top 3 best phone cameras available from waht I can tell. I'm more interested in videos on a phone since I have a decent compact camera, and I think the Z3 makes the best videos.
The phone does not overheat, the S4 was often worryingly hot and it also suffered from CPU throttling that basically cut performance in half.
Things I don't like about the phone:
I had a dead pixel on the first one I bought, brought it back and got it replaced, I examined the replacement for dead pixels and couldn't find any, too bad 2 weeks later I noticed a dead green subpixel but it was too late to exchange it (as it isn't covered by the store's warranty, previous one was replaced under customer satisfaction program). I absolutely hate dead pixels but this one is near the bottom and harder to notice.
The device seems extremely fragile and I am getting paranoid after reading a ton of reports from people who had bent phones, cracked glass, failed waterproofing, and all sorts of other breakage. Right now I have one micro scratch on the front glass that I have no idea how it happened, but it's extremely faint and only viewable in a certain angle, at which the touch grid also becomes visible so it's not really a big deal. Other than that I also found a minor scratch on the power button that is noticeable if you look at it closely.
I don't like the new Lollipop firmware, the colors are especially crappy and there doesn't seem to be any way to customize them properly. I'd like to have dark blue accents but there's no way to do so, and even if I select the blue theme, many accents are orange and I don't like it. I still think the Sony interface was at its best on the XperiaS and the original Z.
The SCR24 cover is absolutely worthless. I really can't find any positive qualities in it other than the fact that it saves the back glass from scratches. A cheap ass cover with cheap glitchy software. Except it costs 40€.
Stock keyboard is very nice and fast but I keep running into a glitch while typing in chrome where the stuff I delete using the backspace key keeps coming back. Another glitch that ruins my workflow is the email app which no longer autocompletes addresses in Lollipop and drives me nuts. Hopefully they'll fix these issues.
It happened twice already, out of nowhere I found my phone pretty much unusable as apps kept crashing all over the place (mostly com.android.phone, "enterprise service" and google play service) and I had to reboot. It happened once on Kitkat and once on Lollipop. On Lollipop I also had a random reboot. Did a factory reset and everything seems fine, but I wonder why these android phones keep having issues after OS updates until you factory reset. I had similar issues with the S4, except much worse (something like 3 reboots per day).
Lollipop multiuser mode is worthless, since gues users can also mess up your phone and access the SD card. There should be a way to limit usage only to certain apps, disable installing of apps, and stuff like that. I miss the baby mode from the S4, which came in handy when I wanted to let my little sis or someone try out my phone without having to worry about them accessing stuff I don't want them to.
Another thing I miss from the S4 is dual app multitasking, it was very limited and slowed the already laggy phone to a crawl, but it was great to play youtube in the background or use WhatsApp while doing something else at the same time. SmallApps are nowhere near as useful.
Soft Keys are awful and they make the screen feel smaller than the one on S4. This is noticeable only in some apps, for example Chrome or certain games that are not optimized to hide soft keys.
Overall I'm satisfied with it but I have major worries the phone will break and sometimes I dust off my S4 when I do something risky such as rollerblading, I can already imagine my Z3 shattering as soon as I fall once (which happens very rarely but is obviously still a risk). Not sure it was worth 565€ but so far it has worked better than any other phone I ever had. The dead pixel is also a cause of minor buyer's remorse every time I notice it.
I'd agree with most of that.
I bought a Ringke Fusion case from Amazon for mine, as the phone is obviously made of the worlds slippiest material! I got a clear one, as I like showing off the copper colour of my Z3. I think the phone may be tougher that it looks. I've dropped mine on a tiled floor, and had it slip off a bathroom shelf into an empty porcelain sink without any damage whatsoever.
I also bought a 9H tempered glass screen protector. Best buy ever. I always thought they were an unnecessary luxury, but it makes the screen a pleasure to touch when compared to a "normal" screen protector. Cuts down on fingerprints too.
I'd invest in a magnetic dock too. Saves wear and tear on the flap for the micro USB, which if it's anything like my original Z, will work loose after a few months.
The couple of things I'd add would be that the camera shutter is too close to the end of the phone, and that the lens itself is too far into the top corner. I keep putting my finger over the lens when I hold it landscape!

Regards the mentioned flaps, XZ and X3, what are your thoughts on it after some time on them compared with the XZ? Are they designed better and more robust? I've replaced an XZ one before, but it failed already unbeknown to me and it got wet and is dead now. So I'm in the market for a phone...

2 months on, how are you loving the ultra-tall/wide display?

Are you liking the extra space? Or do you find it too tall?
to me the size is great ...
many people complian about the finger print reader location , but i have no issues with it . my fingers auto-pilot to it now
I love it. This phone just looks too beautiful to put a case on but I sadly have to anyway.
Despite some minor issues, I do love the size of my s8+ and wouldn't want it any smaller. I like the YouTube movies in ultra wide etc etc.

It's perfect ! I'm not sure I want to go back to a 16:9 ratio
Taller is bad for the s8+. It does not fit well in hoodie pockets and falls out too easily because of it. Bad idea.
The S8+ is so much more easier to use one-handed than my previous big phones. It also seems better balanced in terms of weight distribution. I always felt like I could drop my Note7/S7e if I didn't hold them "just right" where I don't have that sense of fear with the S8+.
I still look at it the same way as I first got it haha. I love it! Since I got used to the new ratio, 16:9 phones look too wide now. Many people made a big deal out of the finger print sensor placement, but when muscle memory kicks in, it's really not an issue. It's nice to see my phone already unlocked right when I lift it up.
Like it. Thinking of oneplus 5 though....
I deplete my battery just staring at my screen. I'm always trying to think of something to do on my phone just to give me an excuse to look at it. I wish my tv looked this damn good! Love the size!
Love the phone S8+, but what a horror to carry around. You can't just put it in your back pocket, cause of it may damage when you sit, cause of it's length. So it's not exactly a perfect 'mobile'. All so feels a little on the flimsy side build wise.

S8+ can't be too much worse than the standard S8, where Jerryrigeverything gave the phone a stellar review for durability.
Love the shape and size of the S8 - makes my old S7e look FAT!!!
First time I went with the smaller phone. I really love it. Since most things I do are reading and typing the added vertical space really helps a ton. I configured bixby button to toggle fullscreen to get even more content in the screen.
The exact opposite of what computer displays do. And I think it's the right direction. Most web content is vertical so are text and documents. And the ultra slim bezels are just beautiful to look at. Makes my 3t look really old in comparison :silly:
Loving it so far.
Lol at comments. Im gonna write something else. Far best phone ive used so far. Got original screen protector from Samsung to prevent thoes scratches people getting.
Im generaly getting around 5 hours SOT on heavy use 4g internet or 6-7 hours when mixed used when i dont watch video stuff - but when i do watch some of the video i got 7 to 8 hours tops. So battery considering 5.8 screen is satisfying.
I would like too get ram managment better thou. Mostly got 1,6 gb of ram available (with 500 mb reserved) even with disabled apps from Package disabler pro. That thing didnt do much better if on. movies plays superb there. Samsung internet browser best out there so far. And ive tested quite a few. android skin UI is improved, and me saying that who comes from Sony flasgships with one of the best android UI,s there is sure a compliment to samsung. Camera is like "this phone dont know how to make bad photo lol". I have little kid and so far after 3000 photos, i actually deleted 3 or 4 of them cause of bad quality, everything else were great. When it comes too sound quality, thats where samsung shines now too. Output is very strong. I was dj for years and i was into music production, and the output is really clear and very powerfull. Samsung really did exellent job there. So generaly, phone is really good, i just wish to get more free ram available. (all 1,5 - 2 gbs is most then enough for all heavy users.)
Phone suprisingly works well in one hand use. i can do roll down with my middle size hand easy.
Is it just me or this phone completely trash? Or Samsung fanboys can't admit it? I pre-ordered this phone day one. Been using for 2 months and has been lagging, crashing, freezing, restart at random times. One time I tried to pay with Samsung pay and restarted. The battery is trash and get depleted quickly by listening to music. The only going for this is beautiful infinity display. I replace this with OnePlus 5 real soon.
Dont like it. Too skinny and wrong aspect ratio. My s5 felt like a bigger screen due to the proper aspect ratio even tbough it was technically a lot smaller.
S3, Note 1, S4, Note 2, S5, Note 3, Note 4, S6 Edge+, S7 Edge and now S8... Beast of allll beasts... no one comes close.. Samsung all the way!!!
Sent from my Samsung SM-G950F using XDA Labs
Nope, I still wish the top was chopped off to be 17:9 or really 16:9. Super tall does nothing for me except make the phone harder to hold and drop down notification shade.

I wouldn't say mine is complete trash but I do wish the phone was shorter. Not wider, just shorter.
Battery life is kinda bad compared to my S7 Edge was in the beginning.
Patiently waiting for Pixel 2.
