I really want to install Voodoo Control Plus however I'm a total tech novice and haven't got a clue on how to get it to install and work. Anyone kind enough out there to give me the quickest most simplest (and least dangerous) method of being able to setup the app? My main emphasis is going to be on changing as little as possible. I would love to play around with root access and custom roms and stuff but in my own time and once I've became a bit more experienced with android phones and the community.

hardware limitations. supercurio was essentially able to develop voodoo for wolfson dac based devices as the defects back then were software based and were solved by rewriting some of the buggy code.
The yamaha dac used in SGSII meanwhile has some critical hardware flaws that can only be resolved at the production/design level by the manufacturer. As an independent user just like the rest of us, all supercurio can do now is to feedback his findings to yamaha and hope they resolve the issues in future batches of their dac...
That's basically what I gather from supercurio's twitter posts and his reasoning for not pursing voodoo sound on the SGSII.
I wonder though if the color banding seen on the sgs2 is also caused by the sharpness filters mentioned in the voodoo project.
I sold the S2 and went back to the original Galaxy S with voodoo sound mod.
The difference is day and night ...... and the Galaxy S has far far more volume for driving headphones.
I did prefer the S2 screen and camera, but the sound was just truly horrible. With no prospect of a sound fix on the Yamaha card and no word of a volume boost there was no point going on with the S2.
Sadly, if playing music is a priority then the S2 is not for you!

Volume+ boosts the volume fine on my SGS2....
All volume+ does is rack up all the frequencies on the system EQ and it sounds terrible.
Enable Volume+ then look at the curve it sets with the equalizer app. It's not a volume boost as such rather an EQ boost that makes the distortion worse!
Keith
FWIW I don't find the sound that bad on the SGS2 using Classic Equaliser and Normal sound effect... yes it could be a touch louder, but it compared OK with my Sony NWZ-S639 walkman which was highly regarded for its sound quality a couple of years back, I also had an iphone 4 beforehand.
I'm not saying the SGS2 is perfect for audio playback, far from it, but it is COMPLETELY blown out of proportion on here.
Bit of a noob question here but I'm finding it difficult to find clear info on this.
I've just switched from an iPhone 3G to the SGS2 and the volume on the SGS2 (with every band maxed in the equaliser) is only about 2/3 of what my iPhone maxed was outputting (nothing too scientific - I just listened to the same track on my SGS2 as my iPhone with the SGS2 headphones).
From reading this I get the impression that this is the highest volume I'll ever be able to get from the SGS2 because the audio hardware is kinda lousy - is that right? Or is there any other way I can boost the output?
Sometimes i think I'm crazy; I'm using the S2 with the lowest possible volume output with my custom molded earphones (almost no resistance) but even with high resistance headphones (eg. a 300ohm beyer dynamic) it's still more then loud enough for me. What bothers me though it that the dac chip is just crap soundwise, low on stereo seperation and an enormous boost for midrange tones; as if the headphone output is meant to be used as a headset for crips and loud talks.
My desire hd had a better sound output (which was still louzy).
can any one shed some light on service mode *#197328640# i read somewhere online but could not find any difference....
[5]audio > [3]WB > ....headset...
This depends on the headphones I can't go Anywhere near half on the sgs its just too loud. If your using high resistance headphones get an amp ?

If supercurious has not time working on a SGS2 version he should give the source codes to sgs2 devs over here!
This is a community after all and the sgs2 screen is more modable than sgs1 because we already have ''background effects'' that we can change
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1135247
I read somewhere that the sound quality (for music) of the sgs II is inferior than the sgs's..
I also read that, it isnt even tweakeble as on the sgs (for instance voodoo sound)
Can anybody confirm this ?
With some technical background?
«»
Most - myself included - feel that the SGS was better.
The SGS2 isn't the disaster some would claim, but for me it's inferior (subjective), but adequate. I use Poweramp.
Supercurio is the man on this subject, and he's done objective analysis:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053978
Obviously, YMMV - source, headphones etc.
Edit - should stress I used Voodo sound almost immediately on my SGS - so can't really give an opinion on stock SQ on SGS. Sorry for not being clear
For me its not worse than SGS1 and i am happy to use it as my main MP3 player ..

Thanks everybody,
Still reading some articles and threads, but what the comparison concerns I can summarize it as in this quote:
Ask Supercurio for information, and read this thread at XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/show and have a tastethread.php?t=1053978 . Most everyone who isn’t an audiophile will be happy enough with the SGSII audio quality, and those same readers will likely find my take on the sound quality is pitched at the right level. So…
AUDIO QUALITY
I should point out here that the SGSII does not use the fantastic Wolfson DAC that is found in its forebear, Samsung instead went with a Yamaha one this time. Is it as good as the Galaxy S with Voodoo Sound? Heck no. But then in the mobile phone world nothing is. I do think it’ll be fine for most people, even if their intent is to use the SGSII as their main music player.

Sound is important for me I do believe the Wolson DAC makes a difference
Going to be sure next week: I'll take some headsets to the a store nearby and test the sound of the sgs II . Need to be sure, before going selling my sgs....
Suddenly, I am not in a hurry anymore, to sell it....
«»
P.s.- Lol...just got an short answer from Supercurio here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14873079&postcount=2478
.
I think for me, SGS stock is same if not slightly worse than SGS II. Voodoo SGS is better than SGS II
Thanks for the kind words about my review
I think the OP has found their answer, and I think taking some headsets along and trying one out is totally the right thing to do for anyone who really does need good audio from their phone (and can tell the difference).
Hi,
I had a chance to spend some time with a sample version of the Samsung Galaxy Note. Since it was a sample I can not comment to much about that part, but I did write down my thoughts on the hardware and using a 5.3" unit as a phone.
If you feel like reading a bit about it you will find it on my blog, ftechviews.blogspot.com
/Faaborg
Thanks for sharing us, I especially like the part you explained about the UI being scaled up to fit the higher resolution screen
Though now I wonder, does the bigger screen and higher resolution really bring about any "real"and tangible result, for example, when you open the browser, can you see the letters clearly without zooming in? Also, I wonder if the stylus would fall out easily... thanks a lot
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Thanks for sharing that, I'm about to buy either a note or nexus, I really want the biggest screen possible yet still be able to carry it around in a pocket like a phone. You have convinced me the note will be ok
The browser is one one of the few places where the high resolution is put to good use. You can see most of a webpage, but the font is really small. Its readable but hard to read. Zoom ones or turn the phone in to landscape helps.
On the sample I had the stylus was almost impossible to get out, so no I would not say that it falls out easily.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I've been eager to hear about how this device will perform, so news like this is appreciated.
You've already answered one question about the stylus, but how is it secured specifically? Is it magnetic or simply held by plastic? Also, how was the battery life? That's perhaps one of my major concerns so far, and I assume you've had enough time to get a basic impression.
Here is another site where someone owns a Note and has shared his experience:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-note/432191-i-have-got-galaxy-note.html
The stylus is not magnetic, but is locked in bu the plastic around it. Battery life was good for such a big device. I could easily use it for an entire work day, including travel time.
Could you also test the audio quality via headphones out. was it excellent, very good, good, average or bad. How was it compared to the best mobile phone player u ve ever heard.
Would there be a 32gb version coming out??? ANyone.?
Regarding audio I primary used it for audio books. The quality is good, and the output volume it better than average. Its not the best I heard, nor is it the worst.

Thanks I planning to buy a New device but you really help me to make a better decision.
Faaborg, did you have any chance to test the videoplayback on the device?
I read somewhere that playing MKV in 720p on the device showed some lagg, which is very dissapointing if it's true...
For some strange reason, what I can't explain, I did not get around to testing video playback. Sorry.
Did you see any lag while using the stylus? And was navigating through the homescreens etc. as snappy as the S II ?
There was a little lag when using the stylus, the experience was very much like the same as the HTC Flyer. All UI navigation was super quick and the same goes for installed apps and the browser.
I was thinking about getting the note, since i want a tablet and want to change my phone. Though they have not yet told anyone what market they are putting it to.
I wish they could say which carrier it would work with in USA.
The size is perfect, its thin and has a what seems to be a great pen to use.
Yes.for sure it will be available in 32GB later.

I've owned the Note for about one and a half day now, and thought I'd share my opinions which can be useful for those looking to get this phone. Feel free to ask me any questions, and if you want me to try some game(paid or free) I'll give it a shot as long as the game is worth it. I love buying games, bought like 5 new ones today .
I gotta say, I knew this was gonna be big but it turned out to be bigger than I ever imagined. It really cannot be used with a single hand without the risk of dropping it, but it feels great using it with two hands. I love it's big screen and it has a good amount of real estate for all kinds of app needs. It definitely fits comfortably in my pocket. The screen quality is great, the pixel density is enough for me to not notice any pixels and the color reproduction is great.
I was kind of disappointing with the build quality of Galaxy S, but this feels quite better. The metal casing on the edges and the rubbery back case feels really good and solid in hands, the weight is about right as well.
The S-Pen is a nice addition and it's quite accurate. Even the handwriting recognition is actually useful, it's able to recognize my handwriting fairly accurately with enough speed to be a suitable alternative for typing in. The quick memo and gestures make for a nice addition, I suck at drawing but my sister could draw a decent scenery out of it. So it's a fun addition. Other S Choice apps use the pen quite nicely and the ability to draw on screenshots and pictures is a very fun and useful addition.
I gotta say, it's not all lagless. But the lag isn't that annoying, most of the time it's during transitions. Browser is smooth on most of the websites but does redraw quite frequently on big websites, although it redraws quick. I feel that this is due to not taking advantage of the hardware properly and mostly due to software, the case which is with most Samsung's phones until they release fixes for it so I'm not too worried about that.
The hardware is amazing, it sports one of the(if not the) fastest SoC in Android world and it shows when gaming. Not only did any game I threw at it ran fine, even Tegra HD games running through Chainfire 3D looked and ran buttery smooth. Games like Shadowgun, Dungeon Defenders, Galaxy On Fire 2 THD, Samurai 2 THD had no problems.
The camera seems quite great, it is more or less like the SGS2, the video recording is quite good as well. For anyone who's curious, 1080p at superfine records at 18mbps. GPS seems good as well although I haven't tried it while driving, it did fix awfully fast(I had a fix before Maps completed the transition and was opened).
I'll keep updating this thread with new findings/experiences. I still have to try GPS properly, office use, continuous high end gaming, observe battery life, and other stuff I'm missing.
UPDATE :
Game's MSAA with Chainfire 3D comparison
Okay, you can find pictures of Shadowgun and Samurai II : Vengeance(Both THD) in my flickr set here. As the filename suggests, auto is set to automatic MSAA, 4x is 4xMSAA and 16x is 16xMSAA. I can't really see noticible improvement in both the games as the PPI is quite a lot, but I guess on tablets it can make a good difference. While 4xMSAA was not being taxing, 16xMSAA made Shadowgun and Samurai II lag quite a lot. Let me know if you guys want any more game's comparisons.
My take on Note's Audio
I tested audio with 320kbps MP3s and a pair of decent ~80$ earbuds, I'm no audiophile but I love an occasional song or so. I'd say that Note can be a decent daily MP3 player, but it's nothing out of the ordinary, the Galaxy S sounds a bit better in my opinion with same MP3 and earbuds but it's nothing earth shattering. All in all, it's a fairly nice package and unless you're very serious about top notch audio it shouldn't cause any problems.
Some S-Note demos
Thought these can be beneficial for those who are looking to buy Note for it's notemaking capabilities. Sorry for my absolutely crappy handwriting, plus I'm not very used to writing on the note.
You can view it here
I'm big on games to, how does the extra resolution look compared to the older galaxy?
Quite great, it feels much better. Plus Note is able to handle some very high end games that don't work properly on Galaxy S. Presuming the games scale well, I had some that didn't and that kinda sucked.
Could you download Zynga Poker from the market & trill me off all buttons look normal....screen scaling. I used to own a Dell Streak & some apps didn't work will with the big screen.
I'm quite interested in this device, however there are 2 major points for me, which will make me pass on this one.
1. How is that useful as a real note taking. I know I can draw stuff with it but let's say I've got to copy a half of A4 page containing text and some schematics.
Now I know it would be impossible to fit it on one s-memo page, so is there anything to create additional page and link/organize it? I don't want to look for the necessary contents longer than necessary.
2. Is it enough to serve as a MP3 player despite having infamous Yamaha DAC? I'm not audiophile and I don't want to be one, however I like to listen to music from time to time.

1. It takes some getting used to, there is a bit of delay when the software actually recognizes your stroke which can be a bit annoying plus it takes a bit of practice to avoid hitting the back button. But it's accurate enough to serve as a real notepad. You can create additional pages from within the memo and it groups them together as a pile. Although they are not organizable from what I could tell. Evernote comes free with this(I think) and it may have more advanced note making capabilities.
2. From what I could tell, it's sound quality is good enough even in the loudspeaker. I'm no audiophile and I can't be one but it sounded decent enough for everyday usage.
The sound quality with the earbuds, how do you think is it?there is a thread here on this forum which doesnt seem to like it.Thats the only thing which is stoping me from getting it.
I should mention that my Galaxy tab 10.1 has a great sound quality so I dont know why shouldnt this as well.

2// Hows The Camera? is it Better than S2 ? or at least like S2? hows the video too? The Voice Recorder? and does that lag happen alot? did it bother u for any moment? Oh and Hows the Wifi signal/ Workin on it?
Thanks!

Hi guys,
I received my Shield this week, I bought it only for RetroGaming. For this reason I already have some android consoles like JXD S7300, Xperia Play, iDroidX360 and Archos Gamepad, I'm looking for the perfect emulation on a portable console .
First thing, the Screen of the Shield is just Excellent ! And controls are top !
But as I feared with some comments, this console has a noticeable audio latency with all emulators...
I tested all emulators (retroarch include) and all have a noticeable audio latency. I compared with my JXD S7300, and the audio latency is unnoticeable on it.
With the .EMU SUITE like Snes9X EX+, NES.EMU etc. I can set the Sound Buffer to reduce the audio latency, but if I set this parameter as minimum I have many sound cracking with frameskip=0 (for constant 60fps), sound cracking I don't have on my 7300 (I tried to overclock and fix the CPU Frequency at maximum with SetCpu and set to Performance, but same thing, even with the 2.55Ghz Kernel).
For the same audio latency as my 7300 I need to set the Sound Buffer at 3 on my Shield and 10 on my 7300, if I set 3 on my 7300 impossible to see any audio latency, on the shield, with the Sound Buffer at 3 I still notice an audio latency...
So my question is, have you an idea of what is the problem on the Shield and if we can resolve it by a custom fix or other if Nvidia won't ? Also a setting on RetroArch to reduce the audio latency.
Thanks for your help.

same here....
main reason i bought the SHIELD was for retro gaming, but i have the same audio issues as your having.
i never had these issues on my Xperia Play or SGSIII.
this combined with the weird D-Pad sensitivity (it seems to act more like a analog stick and i have input errors all the time) has me wondering if i should sell this thing on ebay... as it just frustrating to play right now. ive honestly havent played on it in a week and went back to playing on my DSlite.
Yep, me too, if Nvidia in the future won't release a fix and if we can't find a way to fix this issue I think I'll sell my Shield (easy in France lol) for a Wikipad 7 or the new JXD S7800 because I only want use this console for RetroGaming, so if I can't because a sound issue, no way for me...
At this moment I prefer use my PS Vita (with VHBL) for GBC, GG, SMS and Genesis roms because the emulation is very good without any audio lag and the screen is almost as good as the Shield screen.
It is my hope that some of the problems are because the tegra 4 is new and some optimizations will help improve the situations a little bit.
As for the d-pad I found after wearing it in a little bit through playing lots of games it's improved a little bit. It's still not perfect but I barely notice the awkward sensitivity that used to plague me when trying to run and slide in games like Mario lol

i hope so too. i really do love this thing. i know its basically still in "BETA", but between the 64gb SD card issues, audio lag and the D-pad im regretting the $300 i spent on this right now...
i feel by the time most of this stuff is fixed there might be another price drop...
ahhh.... the life of a tech addict.... :silly:
FWIW I haven't had any audio latency issues with PCSX in Retroarch.
Android 4.3 had some significant audio latency issues resolved (there's a Google I/O talk on it) so that may take care of your issue when that OTA comes.
Hi guys, I installed Caustic 2 on my shield, it gives a very good idea for audio latency.
Go to the menu and result of latency for the Shield: 128ms ! Horrible lol
My JXD S7300 has 86ms, and the audio latency is unnoticeable, above 100ms it's noticeable.
Some owner of the Nexus 7 with android 4.3 also measured = 40ms.
And on my Xperia Play with old android 2.3.4 only 55ms !
But 128ms for the shield is just too high for a 300$ device...
EDIT: A Wikipad owner told me he has only 47ms ! It's great, and the Wikipad has android 4.1.1, so it's possible even without android 4.3.
