Sorry for what I'm sure will be a redundant question but I am having trouble figuring out exactly what I need to do to get my A500 updated and I just want to be sure so I don't brick it, especially since it's such an older tablet.
I have a stock A500 with HC 3.2.1 on it that has been rooted. I never did the OTA update for it and now it doesn't even come up as an option for me to do it anymore. What would be the best way for me to get my tablet up to ICS at the minimum or maybe even JB in the future? As far as I understand I have to flash the bootloader and recovery. Can I follow those tutorials with my tablet being on HC or would I need to get it to ICS first?
I was looking at this guide and I'm just not sure if it applies to my tablet that hasn't OTA'd yet.

Thanks a lot guys!
You'd better get ICS, unlock bootloader, get a new recovery (I'm using TWRP from Tegraowners.com), flash V9 bootloader and finally install your favourite custom ROM.

Hi guys,
I'm selling my A500 and I've been reading around to try and get it back to HC 3.2 with the HC bootloader (basically as if it was just taken out of the box). From there I want to make sure that I can receive the OTA to ICS without any issues.
I downloaded one of vache's full update zips for HC 3.2 last night, but I'm not sure what the Canadian A500 uses, GEN1 or GEN2. Is there any fear of bricking if I flash one or the other?
Lastly, I imagine I need to get the HC bootloader back. I read of some people who flashed the ROM but can't boot because they're still on the ICS bootloader (in my case, Skrilax_CZ's BL). What is the best approach to returning to the HC 3.2 BL?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I'm currently running Flexreaper ICS 4.0.3.

Over the air to ics, use for a week to see how it runs for you. Then make your mods, that way you can compare and know what messed it up.
If I do ota will I b able to root the device or do I root the. Ota as hmmm

Rooting/custom recovery ICS is the easy bit...icsRoot will do the job, and Acer Recovery Installer from the market to install a recovery....
flashing the bootloader (needed for some custom roms) seems to get a few people confuddled, there are plenty of guides to help you there...and plenty of 'help, I'm bricked threads' too so have all your ducks in row before you go down that road
You need the acer drivers from acer and also the google USB drivers, once you have the drivers set and a custom recovery then do a backup, it will generate a "uid.txt" file in the backup folder...copy this file and guard it with your life!!!!! This is the infamous CPUID...from which you get your tabs "secure boot key" IF anything goes wrong then this cpuid is the only thing that will un-unbrick you!!! Make sure you get this before you say goodbye to HC as ICS reports your serial no. which aint gonna work, its by far the easiest way to get yr cpuid, so do yourself a big favour!!!
Honeycomb cannot be rooted...., but there are pre-rooted HC roms around, ezterry has one and also has a nice stock based ICS with a custom kernel. timmydean also has one - the good thing about his one is that its one of only 2 ways to downgrade back to HC, needed if you bork the bootloader flash or are unlucky enough to get a tab that gets 'stuck formatting/partitioning' in nvFlash
As far as actually getting ICS, as shaun said, wait for yr tab to update itself - you'll need to d/l the acer enhancement something-or-other from the market. OR just flash an ICS stock or custom rom - there are normally 2 different kernels for the custom roms "one for the patched bootloader 3.12+ and one for BL 3.01" acer recovery installer will tell you which one you have but if you havent flashed the patched BL then you'll be on the 3.01.
think thats about it for now!!! happy flashing
I am on Thor's ROM since HC. I went to his version of ICS and just flashed it. I want to now use flexreaper but I am not sure how to check what bootloader I have. Also if I am on HC bootloader how do i get to ICS bootloader?
Thanks.
Given what you said, you're still on the HC bootloader. You can use the Acer Recovery app to find out...it's in the play store.
To upgrade to the ICS bootloader, head over to the DEV section and follow Civato's guide. It'll take you through the process step-by-step.
Hi folks. new Iconia 500 owner here. Mine is rooted and is currently on HC3.1 I'm going to guess it's the HC bootloader. Is there a way to check? If it is the HC bootloader, is this thread the best one to follow coming up to an ICS bootloader for use with ICS and JB ROMS? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I saw the dual bootloader thread from Skril but wondered if that might be a little too much for somebody just wanting to run a normal ICS or JB setup.
I guess your good to go on jellybean if you update your bootloader , remember put the rom and gapps on PRIOR to updating the bootloader , you can check your bootloader by using acer recovery installer on the home screen it'll say bootloader version or something , then after that it'll either say 3.11 or 3.12 , those are honeycomb bootloaders , the ics bootloaders say 3.14 multi or something of that sort, goodluck

The thread you linked to just explains how to get the hacked bootloader working on your tab... There's only one. A word of warning though: If you're on Linux, only the manual process works and it can be a bit fiddly... It seems that it doesn't work at all on some newer kernels and the script given in the thread is outdated. On windows, just use Blackthund3r's tool as suggested in civato's howto.
Thanks folks. Waiting on a 16gig SD card to come in before trying it. Looking forward to really using this tab since it's got that great HDMI out.
By the way when i said put gapps and rom prior to bootloader i mean save them to your sd card , don't flash it before the bootloader or else you'll need to reinstall a hc rom

It is not necessery upgrading the boot loader to run an ICS or JB ROM!!!
The HC 3.0.1 boot loader is open, so it allows you to install what ever ROM you want.
And you can return every time you wish to your original HC ROM (backup) without the necessity of downgraiding again

I haven't been keeping up with the A500 development for a long time and now I'm trying to get back into it and so much has changed! There seems to be many different ways to accomplish what I want but I cant figure out which would be best for me.
I'm currently on Taboonay 3.0.1 (HC bootloader I THINK) and would like to try some of the newer roms like flexreaper or CM10 but I need to get the ICS bootloader first which is where I get confused. I've read THIS THREAD and I believe option 2 is what I would have to do, is that correct? And option 1 would be if I was stock ICS?
Another question is would it be easier to just go back to stock and go from there?

You can take a look at a guide that I made for fixing a boot animation issue some people have. It shows the steps for flashing the bootloader. But before you do anything get AfterOta by Gersma here and find your SBK.
Also when you read through that guide just do the automatic APX option instead of the manual one if you can. Other than that it should break it down where it is easy for you.
