[Q] flashed hyperdrive but loaded stock rom - weird - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So this morning, on my ATT GS4 NC1, I went into safestrap and created a new installation on rom slot 1. I guess that's what you call it. I pressed rom slot 1, then wiped, then installed hyperdrive. The install went fine and afterwards, I installed the NC1 module.zip and the SU zip file (both found in the "all things att" thread under "NC1 instructions".
Once it was done, I rebooted but what it did was boot to the regular stock rom. All my screens were the same (app placements, settings, etc) but I noticed I had no cell signal. I went to settings>mobile network and it said something about needing to install a sim card. Sorry I can't remember exactly what it said.
Anyhow, I went into safestrap, rebooted and then activated the stock rom slot and booted. Everything is fine.
What happened? Any ideas as to what happened? As of right now, I am running on the stock slot using the stock rom pending suggestions from you all.
Thanks!

KitKat ROMs will work only when flashed to stock slot.

Hmm I've been wondering this since I've not had success in doing so either. So what your saying is that it HAS to be done on STOCK slot in order for the rom to work? I've been scratching my head to why it refused to work for me. So it's safe? I had accidentally erased my stock rom cause I wiped that slot by mistake. So what's the procedure? Wipe the stock slot then install the rom on it then reboot? And how would I go about getting the stock back by clearing it again and installing the back up on the same slot? Please enlighten us cause I already got stuck on the black galaxy screen losing the safestrap and I had to odin the stock tar again.
I'm on NB1 4.4.2 and off course SS 3.72 beta. Thanks.

Not really sure how 'safe' it is. What I did was use safe strap to create rom slot 1 and installed the rom there. It didn't work so I just went back and installed the rom in the 'stock' slot the same way - wiping first. that worked.
before I did anything, I did a full backup in safestrap. I backed up to my SD card. I'm glad I did because the rom I installed - hyperdrive - did a couple things I didn't like so I was able to reboot to recover(safestrap) and restore my backup to the stock slot. now I am back the way I Was before I messed around.
I'm still looking at other roms but I feel good I Was able to restore the backup.
here are the steps I took (I'm a noob, this may not be perfect)
1) boot to recovery in safestrap
2) make sure 'stock' is active - this means that the 'install button' is red
3) perform advanced wipe on stock slot - all but external sd card
4) press 'install' and install the rom
5) exit installer and then install NC1 ATT module
6) then install SU module
7) reboot - all is good

Awesome!

Holy freaking crap dude thanks! I had feeling that was the way to do it. Thanks allot man, I'm currently organizing the folders, widgets and what not so i don't have to do it again if anything. I'll venture into it tomorrow. Again thanks! You answered a long awaited question.

Just tried a tmobile rom using a "SuperSU-v1.93.Zip" and got caught in a bootloop on the set up screen and even after on the main screen. Is that the same zip you used? If not can you link me? I wonder what the hell or if anyone else has been successful with a Damn tmobile rom, i used (the warp drive rom and 2 others on the list). God it was so cool when i saw the tmobile boot screen, ugh. And to make matters worse i found out that i have a faulty motherboard with the (no Sim, phone will reboot message). Damn I'm loving this stuff, just been running into some bad luck.

Need someone who knows this phone.. (Revert back to stock)

So.. After owning this phone for a year, I still love it to death..
But after many roms and such its been kinda slowing down on me..
what I would like to do, because I heard it helps a lot, is to revert back to the original software, then put a rom on fresh..
I'm running Synergy Rom now.. And it just locked on me.. It keeps rebooting, so I figure now is the time I do this..
Questions..
I will no have to lose my root? right?
How do I do this now? I'm using clockwork and assume I put the original rom(or zip?) on my sdcard, then go into recovery, and run it?
Correct?
I also ran a script file (v6supercharged)
I assume I will have to redo that as well?
Thanks guys!!
Have no phone right now, so would like to get started asap..
Again!! MUCH THANKS!!
As long as you fully wipe using Amon Ra, you should be able to make most updated ROMs run fast on your phone. Perhaps try reflashing Synergy. I also recommend flashing a new ROM, but reinstalling apps without data. Perhaps that is contributing to the sluggishness.

Thanks.. But I've been told over and over, its sometimes good to revert back to stock..
Wipe/clear, Install stock rom (or its an .exe. or something?) then wipe/clear again, and put the rom on..
Anyone have the stock file??
Do I let it update or no ??

That's ridiculous. A wipe is a wipe.
In fact, using the RUU (.exe) is riskier since it flashes radios and such, and if something goes wrong during, you have a bricked phone. Just do a full wipe including cache/dalvik cache and install your ROM of choice, along with a good kernel.

If you rooted with unrevoked or revolutionary, you will need this file to return to stock, and yes, you will temporarily lose root.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/Un....15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.zip
Change the name to PC36IMG and run it from the root of your SD card through the bootloader. You will lose your root, but your security flag should still be off (S-OFF) so that you can quickly regain root after running this file, after changing it to PC36IMG in place of the first one. (It is Amon-RA and not clockwork. You can reflash clockwork later if you want, which I don't recommend.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/Root 2.3.3/PC36IMG3.08.zip
Also, you might need to flash a superuser app, in case you need root inside the stock ROM. Here is an old one, but it should still work for you.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/Root 2.3.3/su-2.3.6.2-efgh-signed.zip
Like the previous users said, it's probably not necessary, but I'm just giving you what you asked for.
hmmm.. so now its not necessary ? I was always under that impression..
Ok..
Anyone know what the new HOT rom is ??
Gigerbread please ?
Like I said I was using Synergy..
Used Fresh before and a couple others..
whats the hot rom ??
FYI I also partitioned my SD card, or whatever its called.. For the gigerbread thing..
Put MikG 3.0 on it and call it done. Rock solid ROM, great battery life, and awesome tweaks built in. It will be like an all new phone. Enjoy

This is why I stress making a nandroid of your stock/rooted immediately after Rooting.
You may want to simply reformat your SD Card. I've been having a few issues and realized it's been months since I cleaned up and reformatted/repartitioned my SD Card, so I plan on doing that tomorrow and flashing a new ROM
Use "Best Method" for Cleanest way (Wiping)
OLDER: Froyo v2.2 (3.70.651.1) http://keetsa.com/files/RUU_SuperSo...15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe
Most Current version is "Gingerbread v2.3.3 (4.54.651.1).EXE" http://www.multiupload.com/LLV12N2WU8
with "xxx.EXE file", You'll need to Run it on Widows and install on Phone thru Micro USB plug.
BEST Method to install Most Current STOCK ROM:
1. Download + Rename to "PC36IMG.zip" on SDCARD + (Boot into Recovery +Install) "AmonRa Recovery v3.11-gnm" http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34586908/PC36IMG-ra-supersonic-3.11-gnm.zip
2. (Boot into Recovery), WIPE these 8 lines (All data/factory Reset, /data, /cache, /sdcard/.android_secure, /system, Dalvik-cache, battery stats, rotate settings)
3. Download + Rename to "PC36IMG.zip" on SDCARD + (Boot into Recovery +Install) "GB v4.54.651.1.ZIP" http://db.tt/Ck6AB18E
If you want non Stock Recovery + Rooted:
1. Rename your "(AmonRa Recovery v3.11-gnm) PC36IMG.zip" to "PC36IMG.zip" again. (Boot into Recovery +Install). (cus Stock Rom changed you to STOCK Recovery)
2. (Boot into Recovery + Install) "Root (Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed).zip" www.mediafire.com/?16a07x3800wvak6
No need to revert to stock.
Use vr superwipe
Save the contents of your sd card to a computer, then reformat the sd card
Wipe everything on the wipe menu, then flash a new ROM.
copy the titanium backup directory back to your sd card and restore apps without data first, then restore data of any games or what not.
Problems should be fixed.

You have a lot of options here. As the preceding posts may have eluded to. Depending on how consistent and deep your issues are, there are different steps that need to be taken.
You can always wipe the ROM and reflash. Do a dirty flash, by just wiping cache and dalvik, then reflashing. That tends to be my temp work around sometimes.
Worst case I've seen is reverting to stock. Unrooting. And starting back over.
With any new ROM you'll need to reflash your mods. Becareful tho of what mods you're using. Not all are compatible across the board.

Did reformatting the SD card help? I just realized and did the same thing. It had been a good 3-4 from changes and about a year since I formatted my card.
It helps a lot. I reformat mine about every 3-6 months

s4 stuck on reboot

I'm running an S4 and have this very weird issue where after installing a custom rom, the phone would reboot and load the rom successfully, but if I ever reboot it, it never wants to go past the Samsung logo.
If I try entering TWRP and fixing permissions or factory reset, it just comes up with errors and fails. The only way around it is to format data, then reflash the rom.
But now I have a nandroid backup so everytime I reboot, I basically have to reflash the rom.. It's happened on at least 2 roms!
I've used the search function on the forums and found a thread was inconclusive so I've made this thread.
Thanks in advance
(This is my first Android phone too, so I'm not 100% familiar with all the different software and techniques, but I can definitely learn!)
Try flashing the ROM with the latest stock CWM. TWRP can cause issues.

go into the wipe options on twrp - go to advanced and select - cache, dalvik, system, data - swipe
then do a normal full wipe
reflash the chosen rom
power off rather than reboot
then power up
something gets fracked with the wipes somewhere and thats how i fixed it.
either that or flash philz recovery through odin and do a "new rom" wipe

For some reason, whenever I install CWM, it keeps getting stuck at "recovery booting" and once in maybe 30 times it works, haven't got it to work in a while.. Not sure what's happening, but if I flash TWRP again, it boots up fine. Am I doing anything wrong? Using Philz touch..

try flashing the rom twice in succession. it will stick eventually but its just getting the right combo. these S4's are a right pain in the ass just now.
also another option would be downloading a rom with Aroma installer onto a micro sd and see if that gets you out of the problem. ive found on other devices ive had that a rom with Aroma can sometimes get you moving (id suggest Omega rom as a good solid base)

The rom I'm flashing (twice) now is Omega actually!
I'll see how this goes! Hoping it's okay!
..
try to install another rom clean & stable and do full wipe or trust me the best to turn the phone to default firmware.

no i just meant flash the rom twice IF it didnt have Aroma.
try GoldenEye rom from micro sd (obviously downloaded and placed on the card through a pc and put back in the phone).
Or as above - you might have to start from scratch and use Odin to revert back to stock and re-root etc again.
Although i said Aroma sometimes helps, being honest it was a rom with Aroma that started causing me a similar issue in the first place (Not Omega or Foxhound though)
No luck guys... I think I'd rather start from a stock rom too. When I created my stock rom backup, it was through nandroid and an CWM format, but CWM did work, it froze when it was checking for MD5 or something...
But now I'm trying to find the right firmware for my phone, is there any thing I need to look out for? Gt-i9505 from Australia?

Roms will not flash

Hello, I just recently rooted my note 3 and used safestrap to install roms. So far I have tried to install Hyperdrive and Jelly beans. neither will flash correctly. They go through the entire process and say sucessful. But then they say "unable to mount '/system," and "unable to mount '/systemorig."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh hell, now it wont even let me restore my backup. It was before. When i try now it says E: Unable to mount '/system. 5 times. Ugh. This blows. Cant reboot either. tells me no os installed.
Are you trying to install on the stock slot?

Did this on my tablet formatted the system and my internal memory on accident. Try downloading via a computer or tablet or other phone a ROM onto a Micro SD card then flash your ROM that way, that's what I had to do hopefully that will work for you. Sounds like your running with no ROM installed at all and you might of erased or corrupted your back up. Good luck!

SS 3.72. I took the nc4 OTA. I used towel root, the newest version of chainfire supersu, installed busy box, then I installed SS 3.72. Everything worked great. I read that romslots will not work in 3.72 so I did a backup and i've tried to install Hyperdrive, Jelly beans (which i learned will not work since its 4.3 based BUT it still installs), and Eclipse. They all install but do not boot at all. Restoring my backup works fine though,

That is pretty much what i am encountering as well. I have stock backed up and i can boot into that if i need to but installing another rom on the stock slot or slot 1 is fine but the problem is booting. It will go up to the screen where it shows safestrap screen and then i just get a blank black screen. I left on for over 10min and nothing.
I got slot 1 to work by toggling the memory allocation to maximum. I believe it is unsupported at this point 3.72? somewhere I read that. You can only install rom on stock slot at this time. I tried installing on both but nada.
The system not mounting I get as well but sometimes it lets me check it and sometimes it does not let me check it. Dunno why.
I had the system not mounting problem, I returned to stock with odin and I dont have that issue anymore. The only problem I have now is the roms not booting.
Bump.
Anybody find anything useful? Im still having the same issue.

[Q] safestrap / romslot 1 / issues

running stock rom on stock rom slot everything works fine, when i install a custom rom to rom slot 1 and boot to custom rom the rom works and does everything it should but i am not able to reboot or power off my phone. it does this if i am on custom rom or stock rom. when rebooting or powering off it gets stuck right after logo of rom goes away and stays there with led light, back arrow and open apps keys lit up. i have to remove battery and boot that way. after i wipe/ delete custom rom from rom slot 1 and everything works fine ??????

If you would have read numerous threads on the issue you would have known. Instead you found out the same way I did some weeks ago!! There are known bug issues with Safestrap that cause the problems you are experiencing when using a rom slot. Use the stock slot only and all will work well. Yes, this means you have to wipe out your stock S5 system, but you can always odin back to stock.

With our build you pretty much have to treat safestrap like any other custom recovery. Most other recoveries that I'm aware of don't have various slots for you to dual boot stock and custom roms. Making a backup within safestrap is definitely recommended before you wipe the stock rom slot that way if you want to go back, you won't need to recover with odin. Not saying that's a bad way to go, just a little inconvenient.
Sad to say the developer of our recovery if off doing other things. I don't know if this rom slot one issue is something that can be patched within the recovery, or it's it's more of a ROM developer kind of thing, but I don't see that getting fixed any time soon.

Few issues since rooting

Hi,
I have now rooted my phone and seemed to have removed the issue I was encountering. (IMS Framework)
However I have a few issues since rooting and am a bit unsure if what to do next
Any help to the following points is greatly appreciated. I am complete noob so only plain English and links to idiots guides please!
1) as a recent post states, I am also suffering from frequent restarts. They are quick restarts, only a few seconds (not like a hard reset etc) however there seems to be no specific reason or app causing it.
Posts suggest removing Knox might help?
I have a few root removal apps installed now so can someone tell me which Knox apps/programs can be safely removed???
2) when I press side button to unlock the phone, the screen sometimes freezes and doesn't respond. I have to press lock button again to lock, again to unlock then it works again
Not a major problem but annoying none the less
Any ideas??
3) I rooted to save battery by deleting the vodafone virus IMS framework however battery is still not as it good as it was before IMS framework. It doesn't drain within a few hours but again it's annoying.
Android system and OS are currently using more battery than the screen
So being a noob I'm. It sure where to go from here....
I've done a backup from nandroid manager app (in a cwm format it seems) and downloaded rom manager however CWM installer hasn't worked (something on the install guide says something about Samsung devices needing to install something but I can't find a guide on it)
(Please also confirm, the back up I did to external sd card has a few files including an md5 file, a few tar files and recovery img file. Is this correct? Is this the folder I would use to restore if I encounter issues later on??)
So I'm thinking I unroot and reinstall factory settings through kies etc (guide how to do this would be useful??!!)
Then root again and install a new rom (a nice clean one without the bloatware etc)
EDIT. IVE READ HOW TO INSTALL CWM FROM ODIN SO WILL TRY THAT.
QUESTION THEN BECOMES : WILL INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM FIX POINTS 1,2 and 3????
Am I overthinking this or is there a quicker fix to my issues above?
Any help appreciated!!
1. If you have a custom recovery then flash knox removal script. Then you don't have to delete it manually. For example > http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/scriptknoxout-complete-brutal-knox-t2807172
2. Could be related to point 1.
Flash the script and it should solve most of your problems.
For your last question. There is no point in unrooting and using Kies if you want a custom rom. A custom rom will fix point 1, 2 and 3.

(or could i put a ROM on my External SDcard and flash via TWRP?)
Click to collapse
Stock ROM (download it on your pc) -> Flash it via ODIN
or
Custom ROM having it in your SDCARD -> Install it via TWRP (Custom Recovery)
Took a while messing around with sd card but managed to flash liquid smooth and all working
Annoyingly Odin didn't recognise phone but that's ill sort that out another time
Thanks for help
