[Q] Reflashing to stock recovery to do the OTA update - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried a custom ROM (GPE) and I found my signal was dropping far too much. I acknowledge that I probably need to update to a new baseband version but there's so many I had no idea which one to go for.
So I decided I'd rather just install the official OTA.
But in order to do that, I'm guessing I need to reflash the stock recovery and unroot my phone. I can use SuperSU to unroot my phone but where do I get the stock recovery from? I can't seem to find the file anywhere:

Hi mate ,
In order to get it back as it was ( factory ) you need to flash with Odin a stock rom .
Depending in what bootloader you have it will be 100% factory new or 99% , if you got the old bootloader ( 4.2.2 knox free) it will be like new, if you have the knox enable bootloader (>4.3) then the warranty bit will be trip ( you will not be able to use knox related software
Stock roms
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I didn't wanna make a new thread.
I am currently running a custom ROM with CWM as my recovery. I installed the custom ROM back when my stock ROM was on 4.2.2 so Knox shouldn't be on my phone. To restore my phone back to the original ROM and recovery, do I just flash using Odin? Can I flash the newer 4.4 ROM with Odin without problems?

Hi Mate ,
Here is just fine.
If you have a 4.2.2 bootloader you have a knox free bootloader
You can
Flash with Odin a Stock rom 4.2.2 and still keep the old bootloader
Or
Flash with Odin a Stock rom 4.4.2 rom BUT you will flash the new bootloader also ( knox enable)
Until this point your warranty is still fine,
If you flash with Odin a 4.4.2 rom and later decide to root ( I9505 can use towelroot and not trip warranty) , install CWM or a custom rom you will trip your knox

S4 bricked after flash stock german 4.3 > Omega 4.3

Hi All,
I think i bricked my S4 by accident, ill explain what i did.
I was on Omega V10 (android 4.2.2) for a while and everything worked fine.
As soon as the stock 4.3 version of samsung (german) came out i flashed it by this guide.
I did exactly as i was suppose to and it worked like a charm.
After working with the standard samsung 4.3 i wanted to go back to Omega ROM cause its much smoother.
I saw that Omega had just finished V13 (wich is 4.3) so i rooted my phone again, flashed Philz TouchWizz and flashed Omega V13.
After this the problems started, the flash worked but i couldnt get exchange to work to i wanted to go back to Stock samsung 4.3
When i flashed the german stock rom again the flash failed on the bootloader

Now i can still install different roms, phone still boots but is very laggy, i have no sound and i cant make calls.
I still can root the phone, install Philz and actually i can do everything.
I can also still use Odin to flash whatever i need, only i cant get a succesfull bootloader flash
Kies also doesnt let me recover to stock.
So far i tried several stock roms, Omega and even google 4.3 versions, the problem isnt the roms it must be the bootloader (and yes i have knox 0x1 now)
I think i screwed up the bootloader and im on the verge of sending the phone back to the store.
Does anyone have an idea how i can get my phone working again?
Cheers !

I did install the leak (the one with 4 files) but it fails all the time on the bootloader file, see the screenshot ive posted.
I can flash the 3 other files but not the BL file.
I did manage today to install the 3 files with a different BL file, this one : GSM_Modem_XXUEMJ5_and_LTE_Modem_XXUBMH1 (from Omega rom)
But the Phone still doesnt work
That guide you followed is for the I9500. Your signature says you have a I9505. You are not going to tell me you flashed a rom for a different phone onto your phone or are you?
martyzzz: i went to omega 13.1 from phoenix 3.0 and had almost same issue as you with phone lag - no sound - cant make or receive any calls.
i flashed back to 4.2 and still same issue.
i thought i am alone but looks like something in omega caused this.
my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502196
any1 plz
I also came from 4.3 german stock fw (mj5).... i don' t have any of these problems... only problem i have is: i cannot make a mobile hotspot anymore... anyone got an idea?
Sry i post my question into your thread but i'm not often in here and don't exactly know what to do...

[Q] How does Towelroot change how I install a custom rom on my phone?

So, I've been too scared to update my unbranded S4 (still on 4.2.2 stock) but it looks like this Towelroot changes the game somewhat.
So, from my understanding, if I wanted to install say, the GPE rom, this would be the process:
1) Install towelroot and root phone
2) Install a custom recovery such as TWRP
3) Install GPE rom
Does towelroot come with a recovery or do I have to install one manually (flashing via Odin?) Is Towelroot compatible with 4.2.2 or would I need to update my phone with the official OTAs? Am I right in assuming updating via the OTA installs the bootloader which comes with KNOX?
Thank you

Hi,
the steps describe are right , you need to root your phone ( step 1) , you need to install a custom recovery ( step 2 , not included in step 1) at this point your warranty will be void if you have a knox enable bootloader and finally install custom rom ( step 3)
As mention by geohot
Definitely invited: AT&T GS5, Verizon GS5, GS4 Active, Nexus 5
May have some troubles at the door but invited: AT&T/Verizon Note 3
Possibly invited: Every Android phone with a kernel build date < Jun 3
what model S4 you have , I know for sure all I9500 4.2.2 have the old bootloader so as long as you do not update the bootloader you can use any method you want to root and have no problem with knox. Confirm this for your phone and DO NOT UPDATE THE BOOTLOADER

Hi ,
I am 100% sure all 4.2.2 are old bootloader ( if you want to make sure go to download mode and see if there is any knox related text)
As long as you do not do any official OTA or flashing with Odin any >4.2.2 stock rom you are knox free .

How to root S5 (G900F) running Lollipop without tripping KNOX counter ?

Hi,
I'm a new Samsung Galaxy S5 user, I have a S5 SM-G900F model running Lollipop stock rom with G900FXXU1BNL9 baseband version, LRX21T.G900FXXU1BNL9 build number and Knox 2.3, i want to know how to root and flash a custom rom without tripping Knox counter (0X0).
Help please...
No method yet, only downgrading to KK
I don't believe there is a way right now. Towelroot will usually do it but your build date is most likely too new. You can wait till its updated to work with your phone or trip the counter ?
Although I could be wrong.
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
Towelroot only works with KK builds, and they have to be dated prior to June 2014 iirc
The dev of Towelroot "Geohot" works for Google now too, so.... updating it, maybe not
Thx guys for your replies...so the only way is to downgrade to KK, right? How to do that?
Grab a stock KK ROM for your model S5 from sammobile, flash using ODIN
Instructions are on the ROM download page and scattered around XDA in most threads

So...i only have to download a rom from SamMobile and flash thru Odin? How to know which the correct one to download?
You enter your phone make, model and country/region into the search panels
For example, this is for mine:

Downloading the stock 4.4.2 rom for my model, after i flash the rom thru Odin, can i root with towelroot app and supersu? And after root can i flash a custom rom without trigger knox?
Flashing Stock ROM = KNOX 0x0
Flashing Custom ROM / Recovery = KNOX 0x1
You can root with Towelroot if the ROM you are flashing is from before June 2014 iirc
Then yes you can install SuperSU

Nope is from September...
Then towelroot won't work
You either need a build from before that date, or flash the kernel of a build from before that date, root, then flash back your original kernel
Don't know where to get those files from, but plenty of threads with people posting links kicking about, if I find any I`ll post them - but you'll likely need to request the specific version for your ROM

Then you should be able to root with towelroot fine without flashing any other kernels - it's ROMs built after then that is the issue

Sorry for the late reply, but you may flash the latest kitkat fw, than an older kernel compatible with towelroot, than root, than reflash the current kernel and you're done!
Knox 0x0 and root enabled
downgrading to kitkat didnt helped < july
I tried all the things but didnt worked
flashed earlier build of kernal and tried
flashed whole rom (early build. First KK rom)
None of them worked for me
well i am a G900H user. I dun think theres exception for exynos varients.
There seems to be some disagreement over what I am about to type.......but this is what I've read about several times........
Downgrading from Lollipop back to KitKat *may* not work........
The Lollipop builds seem to include enhanced security (in the bootloader or kernel.....or somewhere like that) which remains in place even if the phone is flashed back to KitKat. This enhanced security 'patches' the exploit that Towelroot took advantage of, rendering the app ineffective for rooting EVEN IF the compatible kernel or firmware is flashed. Basically, once Lollipop is on your phone, Towelroot won't work no matter what you do to try to get around it.......
As I said, this is only information that I've read, and I *might* have misunderstood......but there it is.

G900F Root, OTA and KNOX

Hello there,
got a few noob questions about my S5 (G900F, stock, BOJ1 atm). I have searched online, but could not get good answers.
I want to play a litte with root, remove ads, try a few roms, ... I am not worried about my warranty, but i want to have the possibility to go back to stock and use it like i am using it now (get OTA, use private mode, ...). I want to try the Android M update without problems if its ready
As i understand, i have to use Odin to flash TWRP. Then backup everything with TWRP to be safe. After that i can use TWRP to flash custom roms or root my stock rom. If i want back, i can restore the backup.
With this method i will set KNOX to 1 and void my warranty. That means i will not receive OTAs, even with stock rom? Can i use private mode with KNOX 1 in stock rom? Are there other features which i could not use with KNOX set to 1?
Thanks in advance.
KNOX 0x1 doesn't stop OTA, Device Status "Custom" is what stops OTA (Root / custom recovery etc)
But flashing back to stock with ODIN and a stock ROM from sammobile will fix that and you'll get your OTA - that's what I do for new update, then root and TWRP again once it's updated
Private mode, fingerprint unlock etc etc all still work with KNOX 0x1
I haven't found anything that KNOX 0x1 prevents from working and I've had mine 0x1 for about a year, I have read it might affect the ability to join enterprise networks, but never tried
Thanks and nice to hear.
I thought i could keep custom recovery and restore my backup from there...
So i will download the file from sammobile with PDA and CSC "G900FXXU1BOJ1" ?
Does it reset the custom recovery too?
Thanks again =)
You can keep custom recovery and restore your backup, but when you make the backup, you will have already flashed the custom recovery in order to do so, meaning it will backup custom recovery, and when you restore that backup, it will restore the custom recovery too, keeping your device status custom
Only way to return it back to Official for OTA, would be find the stock recovery and flash that, or flash that stock ROM from sammobile
I've got a copy of the stock BOJ1 ROM you can use instead of waiting for sammobile slow downloads
Code:
https://mega.nz/#!fVhhzRBC!A79uC8Fgg1mGCZOaujQCzBxcUUN9z_ctVVkigD8ffVM
It's the BTU (United Kingdom region)
Yes, flashing a stock ROM will restore the recovery back to stock too
Thanks, this will be much faster =)
Does BTU only mean the language? I am not exactly sure what i need
I live in Germany and i think i got no carrier? Bought on amazon^^
BTU is just the region code for United Kingdom carrier free, the code for Germany carrier free is DBT by the looks of it

Just one last small question: The odin version doesn't matter?
Different versions may work, but go with the latest to ensure compatibility
3.10.7
If this helps: If youre going to a Marshmallow ROM I'd recommend ALXNDR's DevBase, it's got a few nice tweaks to it like init.d support & the latest SuperSU (I think it's debloated also)
I've had a flawless experience with Marshmallow on the S5. Battery is way better and the phone is much smoother! I also flashed the S6/S7 keyboard, media sounds, S7 launcher (no weather widget though), and new S-Voice, Phone/Contacts apps definitely recommend it!
Good luck!

Where did you get the keyboard and media please? I wouldn't mind having them if I choose to trial CM13 again as the media on CM ROMs is awful.

I mean the actual Marshmallow touchwiz!
The firmware was leaked and there are already some stable ROMs with everything working

Don't flash the weather widget as it will crash your SystemUI however everything else worked fine for me.
The attached file is the keyboard zip which just needs flashing.

completely lost in the sea of threads > I need directions

Ok, I have got G900F and I know EXACTLY what I want, but cant find the threads of reference cause this has become ridiculous, so many versions of the phone, so many topics, so many threads that are basically the same ..
I have G900F with android 5.0, baseband version G900FXXU1BOJ3
1. I want to root it, is this thread ok ? >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699648
2. I want to ask if there is stock rooted marshmallow ? and if there is, should I OTA and then root, or some other way ?
question number 2 is unanswerable using search. both XDA search and google. You only get tangled in unneeded information and chaos. Please help me as I have lost 2 hours clicking links that I dont need ..
1.) Recommended way to root is to flash TWRP 3.0.2.0 (Custom recovery), then flash SuperSU from TWRP
You can also try flashing CF Auto Root with ODIN 3.10.7
http://download.chainfire.eu/397/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltexx-smg900f.zip
But that doesn't always work and can cause a soft brick, needing the stock ROM flashed again to fix
Or if you don't want to trip KNOX, downgrade to KitKat, root with an app called TowelRoot, then upgrade using an app called FlashFire iirc
2.) No, you need to root Marshmallow yourself, using the TWRP & SuperSU method
You can OTA upgrade to Marshmallow, Flash TWRP 3.0.2.0, then Flash SuperSU Systemless 2.72 beta (Or whichever beta is the latest atm)
If you're not bothered about KNOX, just flash TWRP and SuperSU
You can download the latest MarshMallow stock ROM for the G900F using a tool called SamFirm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
Flash with ODIN
Ok, found out some other stuff in the meantime
1. I obviously dont have OTA option, and now I see that the version people flash via odin is not official, but Shri Lanka .. ? is there an actual oficial international version of 6.0 ?
2. I started following mega-thread for S5 and downloaded ODIN and started downloading CWM but I guess I should listen to you - I would root it with TWRP, I mean the version I am on now
I will wait for better reactions for 6.0 as I have read a lot of 6.0 feedback thread and people are complaining .. maybe noobs, but still.
thanks again man, you simplified it for me
will report once I root current version
If you are stock (Not rooted or custom recovery) you have OTA option
Otherwise set SamFirm tool up like this, and you'll get the United Kingdom Unbranded 6.0.1 (Change the region to whichever one you want)

I've been running 6.0.1 for a while now on my G900F, and I get better battery life (6-8 hours SoT) and much better performance
Easy enough to flash back to whichever ROM you want, the G900F is unlocked
Make a nandroid backup in TWRP, then you can restore that to exactly the way the phone was when you created the backup
