I apologize if this has been asked before. I have tried searching here for answers already with no luck.
SO...My Note 3 is completely stock. I have a rooted Nexus 7 with Super User access and Clockworkmod and a few other things that's installed in my car. I'm mostly a noob with this kind of stuff until recent, but still a noob. I MUST have Foxfi working on my phone so I can tether it to the N7 unless there's another way I can tether the N7 to my Note 3. I didn't know I'd lose foxfi when installing KK OTA. Of course it updated months ago but I haven't needed to tether my phone in a long time so I was already practically done with the N7 install in my car when I found out I can't tether to it like I planned. Can anyone PLEASE HELP! I'm probably $700 or more into the N7 install in my car and can't turn back now

There will be a different tethering app available, but you won't be able to go back to 4.3 on your Note since you have upgraded your bootloader (at least not for the foreseeable) -It's simply impossible at this moment in time.
On N9005 variant, it is impossible to revert from KitKat to Jelly Bean due to bootloader restriction.
Thank you guys for your feedback. All I really care about is tethering to my tablet, so as long as I can do that I don't care about going back to jellybean.

My new GS4 should be delivered today! I am retiring my beloved Motorola Photon but am very excited at the prospects of having the best device on the market in my hands. My question concerns all of my backed up apps and games from my rooted and modded Photon. Is it possible to restore them from my saved "Titanium Backup" files to the GS4? Is it better to download the apps again from the play store and just restore the data? Thanks for any help.
most of the apps will f/c, just download them again, and save you the trouble and time.
Thanks for the reply. I will go ahead and just download all of my apps from the play store but my main concern was more about losing the app data. Can the data be restored safely via saved Titanium Backups?
I think this thread should maybe have been posted in the Q&A forum. My bad.
You should have no problem restoring the data using TB, just make sure you don't restore any system data.
On another note, since you will be getting your phone today, I would recommend that you take both firmware updates before you root. The most recent firmware is MF9, when you receive your phone it will probably be on MDC. So goto settings my device and then select update firmware and let it upgrade to MDL, then after its upgraded have it upgrade again to receive MF9. Then you can use chainfires cf-autoroot in the development section to root it and follow his instructions to load a custom recovery. This will save you a lot of headaches in the upgrade process and get you rooted with the latest software on the phone.

Or you could use the Helium app for your transfers. No root required! I was able to transfer all of my apps+data from my E4GT via WiFi with no force closes

When I switched from my tmobile note 2 to the sprint gs4, I used titanium backup to restore user apps with data. Never had any issues.
Just make sure to not backup any system data/apps only user apps

Enjoy the S4. :good:
I got the Photon right when it came out and someone here in our office still has one. It really shined in the short span it was one of the top devices but crazy how much of an improvement the S4 is. First thing I always notice is how much better the screen is and how much thinner the device is. Not to mention moving from GB to JB is huge.

Thanks CC. Yeah, the Photon was a great phone. Still is. Was Sprint's top device when I ordered it. I had mine rooted, overclocked and modded almost from day one and have had a custom CM10 JB rom(Thanx jokersax) on it for most of the time I've had it so I'm very familiar with JB. I'm really excited for the S4 though. Cant wait to get my hands on it. Hopefully today! First thing I'll do after I activate it will be to update the firmware to MF9. Then I'll have to figure out how to root it. Then I have no idea what I'll do as far as kernels/recoveries/roms yet. Have lots of reading to do. :silly:

Try running it with rooted stock for awhile. Maybe even with a custom launcher & kernel. You might be pleasantly surprised at how well it runs. Plus you can play with all the fancy stuff on the phone and see what you like and don't like.

Well, I got my new GS4 on Friday finally! This thing is really nice. The screen is amazing. Hard to believe how much better all of my photos look! Anyway, what I'm looking for is advice on what to do next. I just rooted it with CF Auto Root (Thanks Chainfire) and it went very smoothly. Kernels, custom recoveries so I can run a nandroid backup? What have you done??
I just upgraded from a photon...I restored about 80 apps+data, text messages and call log. I actually didnt have a single issue. Titanium rocks.

Hello all,
I Currently have the S3 Running Dandroid 4.7. I really like it. Was not looking to upgrade. As it happens my wife is in need of a new phone and not due for an upgrade so she will be taking mine.
The only thing either one of us use is the Native WiFi Tethering. Is it possible on the S4? Should I just buy a used S3 and stick to the custom ROM's?
I see that rooting is possible now via External SD. Is there an exploit available to enable the Native Tethering?
Thanks in advance,
-NJ
not only is root possible for the MF3 build, there an exploit called "safestrap". it allows you (after rooting) to flash a custom rom in a secondary slot and boot into it, leaving the stock firmware untouched.
check out the link and read up on it (under step 3) for some better understanding. it might help you make the decision for S3 or S4.

Thank you for replying with the link that was very helpful.
Knowing my wife she would not be comfortable with the S4 this early in the modification game. TWRP is awesome but she would more than likely not be happy if I had to load ROM after ROM until the Developers coded a truly stable Daily Driver.
I'll talk to my wife tonight and see if she will take my phone for now and I'll use her cracked screen phone. That way maybe we can give the Devs a few months to mature some of the ROMS and make the upgrade to the S4 an easier decision.
Thanks for the help,

Hi All,
I'm really lost and after days of reading, I'm 100% sure I'm not great with these tech stuff.... I'm just messed up with meaning of terms (flash, kernel, ROM, etc...) needless to say understand what is going on...
I have been using a version 1 Nexus 7 3g tablet (JWR66Y - android 4.3) for sometime now and have been trying to find out how to wifi tenther without rooting since I just don't understand rooting. But I'm going to be travelling and really wanted to use my N7 as a wifi hotspot and to store photo from camera. Anyway, I finially gave up and tried to root for the first time in my life.
I used the WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit v1.7.2 and spend hours to unlock then root. I just followed everything as standard from the toolkit. I thought by the end of this I can wifi tender, but I was wrong... :crying: I still don't have the option in setting nor does any of the tether apps from play store work....
My question on wifi tether/hotspot is - 1. What am I missing?
As for OTA, I was reading about N7 being able to store file from usb (like photos from camera). Apparently that need to root too. 2. I have now root, does that mean this will work?
I am just soooooo lost!!! I googled heaps and I see post about roms or root and all the magic things people do. I see many that is not 4.3 but mine is and I don't know if that would kill my N7. Can anyone point me to post or point me to the right direction of what I need to do???
Many thanks in advance!!!!
I tried a search for the first before posting and did not find anything in regards to it however I just recently upgraded to Kit Kat 4.4 on my rooted Droid RAZR M xt907.
I found out after upgrading that apparently I no longer could enable WiFi or tethering, even when using foxfi and after doing some searching found that the entitlement hack previously used no longer work either I stumbled across a post in regards to a new entitlement hack that was working for the Droid Maxx and decided to give it a try on my RAZR M and although needing to bypass step 3 as I could not locate those files listed and proceeding to follow the rest of the guide exactly as detailed I now have restored my wifi hotspot and tethering access and it is working great. I just wantedpos post to help anyone that might still be using the RAZR M and have upgraded to KitKat and lost their hotspot and tethering access.
I do want to note also, that I am also running the custom Beanstalk 4.4 ROM on my phone as I am not sure that if it matters or not.
Below is the link to the original thread I found.
Keep in mind that I had to skip step 3 because I could not locate the named files on my particular phone, but followed up everything else exactly and hotspot and tether are working great now!

Might be a good idea to move this to the dedicated Razr M forum; I only stumbled upon this through Googling.
I tried this on my own RM, which is running the stock KitKat firmware with a locked bootloader (I just rooted today with towelroot), and it works fine (step 3 was needed). My phone rebooted the first time I tried to activate the tether (step 8), but it worked on the second attempt.

Just curious,
I am grandfathered into unlimited data for verizon. This worked for me. Will I be charged $30 to use the stock wifi-tethering?
I have rooted, and this method worked. Only the stock wifi tether works for me...I have tried a lot of 3rd party wifi tether apps with no luck.

Hi,
I bought a used a Verizon S5 hoping to play PoGo using Fake GPS. But I am unable to select a Fake GPS app in Settings. I am currently on 5.0 (version ending in BPB1) and checking for software updates on the phone fails. Presumably because I do not have a SIM in the phone as I would like to continue to use my iPhone. The S5 would be only on Wifi (or iPhone's hotspot) and used only to play PoGo.
I have read through (most of) the painiac's (excellent) guide and I am trying to decide what to do next:
1. Try to install marshmallow update (no root) and see if the option to select the fake GPS appears in settings
2. Root the phone and try several custom ROM's to see if the option appears
3. Sell the phone back and try another phone
I have flashed custom ROM's with older Android phones some 3 years ago. Modding scene has considerably changed since then and I find myself reading warnings and seeing dead ends (permanently locked bootloaders etc) everywhere. Any advice would be appreciated.
Let me rephrase the question. I can update to marshmallow 6.0 with images available on the internet. I will lose the ability to root the phone. But I may be able to run fake gps and play pokemon go.
Or I can try rooting it and then installing xposed or other frameworks to get the set up on lollipop 5.0 - which is root-able.
Which would be the recommended way for someone like me with mediocre android hacking skills and very little time?
Thanks.
Marshmallow will give you the option to make Fake GPS the default mock application.
However, Pokemon Go will not run on rooted devices unless you know of a workaround for that.

you've come to the right person asking this stuff lol I used to cover all that stuff daily on my yt channel. gained 2400 subs in 3 weeks due to posting my vids on other sites that allowed pogo hacks to be posted. was doing 3-4 vids a day.
AOSP based roms will not work on Pokemon Go. That leaves out anything like Cyanogenmod or anything compiled from it.
The only way i got POGO to work on my spare s5 (i use it for testing) was to flash back stock NI2, re-root with towel root, flash a TouchWiz based rom with SafeStrap, then delete the Root binary and anything SU related, basically unrooting my rom and backing it up manually and only putting em back when it was needed
There's probably better ways now, but for me this worked 100%
POGO isn't worth the effort in my opinion.

Thanks so much. I am currently not rooted and when I go to MM I cannot be rooted from what I understand. So I think I will do the upgrade when I have some time. I will lose the ability to root but I can live with that.

I agree on the effort comment, but I am not sure why you are rooting the device if it does not work on rooted devices? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to stay un-rooted and keep it simple and stupid?
Also, can anyone point me to a legit MM stock ROM? I have downloaded ODIN but I am nervous about the sketchy websites needing registration for downloading the ROM image. I need stock un-rooted Verizon ROM so I was thinking it should be easy to find. However I am not having much luck on the Googles.
Using Magisk 10.2 and the root bundled with it works. You just have to use Magisk hide which is now bundled with magisk.
I'm on vzw s5 running phoenix rom with root. Can still play pogo. No luck on xposed though.
Just a quick update. I got all the things in place for updating the phone to Marshmallow 6.0 and connected the phone to the computer for the first time. The phone gave me messages about installing software update agent and I followed the instructions. It offered to install the marshmallow update from verizon and I took that offer.
After the update, the option to select a GPS app showed up on the phone. I selected my installed app and almost everything works on pokemon go now.
I say almost because PoGo still jumps back to home location for a short second from time to time. But from what I can tell, the fix needs root. So I'll just leave good enough alone for now.
Thanks for all the help.
