Recommendation: Rooting and tweaking a Homecare Tegra Note - Nvidia Tegra Note 7

I just would like to share a very good experience about de-Chinesing, rooting and tweaking my Homecare (the Chinese version) Tegra Note 7. I would like to share this because of a lot of struggle I had AND because it is sooo simple. I believe this will work with other brands of the NVIDIA Tegra Note 7. So he is is:
1. I used the ADVENT VEGA Factory image to reflash my Note. Simple and painless. Fast and straight forward!
2. Update to the latest OTA. (2.4 in my case)
3. Use the latest version of SuperTool to install TWRP, root and install the "write-to-SDcard" fix.
4. Download and install Xposed Installer (it is not available in Google Play, just search the web) and install the frame work.
5. Install GravityBox for KK and set up those handy tweaks.
The ultimate device is born!

Help out a Kindle Fire noob, please.

So I have decided to pull the trigger and order a Kindle Fire. I am going to order it soon. Anyway, I have a few questions...
1. If I order one now will the firmware be rootable and will I be able to get the Google Play Store?
2. If the above is not possible, what ROM should I use to get the Play Store and to speed the system up?
3. If your suggestion in flashing a new ROM then please give me fool proof noob proof step by step method on how to do this. My only previous encounter with flashing was CM7 on my aria and flashing my galaxy note with Odin.
Thanks!
EDIT: I think I'm going to go with the Energy CM9 rom. It just seems best. I still need detailed flashing help...

1.- It'll probably come shipped with 6.3 - some people can get root on the stock ROM using KFU, but others have to do it manually (there are some good step by step instructions on doing it that way)
2.- Pretty much any, really... it's up to what you like/need/use. ICS ROMs are the best IMO, but they don't have HWA yet (no netflix, hulu, intensive games, HD videos... and so on). If you want it to be more table-esque without sacrificing HWA (Hardware Acceleration) you can go with CM7 ROMs. For a custom ROM that keeps the "looks" of the stock one, you can try the MoDaCo GR7 one.
3.- If you do decide to flash a ROM, there isn't much to it. You'll want to download/copy the ROM to the KF, install FireFireFire and either CWM or TWRP using KFU, then boot into CWM/TWRP and Factory Reset, Wipe Data, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik-Cache, finally Install/Flash your new ROM and reboot.

[Stock][prerooted][D5503] 14.5.A.0.283 from T-Mobile_PL

Hi guys,
I've downloaded with XperiFirm the latest available firmware for T-Mobile Poland - D5503_14.5.A.0.283 and created a prerooted .zip with PRFCreator. This does not have any branding at boot, themes etc., only a few apps that you can remove or disable as per your choice, I didn't remove anything so you can choose yourself.
What's included:
D5503_14.5.A.0.283_T-Mobile_PL
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.20-RELEASE.flashable.zip
You need to have custom recovery to flash it, and please remember to backup your device, you use the file at your own risk.
Download link: https://mega.nz/#!bF0lBbxI!8YfxjyDl7kDrPasOsx8g29UJuF3DZ9S4suYkDl3-fJo
Enjoy!
thank you very much! seems to work very well!!!!
Nice. One question xposed is working with this rom?
At first I was satisfied with this rom, but after few hours I've come across few problems with it.
1. TOO many unnecessary apps mostly due to t-mobile origin
2. NDR Utils did not work for me
3. Recovery option does not work any more - had to flash it again
4. SU did not work since the beginning.
I start to think that KitKat is the best choice for me right now.
As it was already rooted, I removed the unnecessary apps.
NDR Utils, Recovery, SU all worked for me.
I had problems with the wifi connection: it always dropped the connection even with good reception.
I couldn't charge the phone with a USB2.0 port, only with a USB3.0 port.
Now back to KitKat and no problem at all.....waiting for 5.1 ...
@denishome Additional apps are there, but can be disabled, I wrote about it in the first post. NDR Utils, Recovery, SU all should be working. Looks like something went wrong while you were flashing this ROM. Re-flashing should help.
@bodrovics I didn't notice any problems with WiFi, as for charging issue - I've had some problems while charging via docking station, but that's not specific to this ROM, also earlier when using .270 it was the same. It charges but slower than straight via USB and not always to full 100%. Have to look a bit more into it, possible that it's a fault of my docking station.
The only real problem for me is battery drain in Lollipop 5.0 in general. After I updated to this ROM battery life improved over .270, possible that it was due to the fact that I have made full wipe. I didn't do full wipe while upgrading from 4.4.4 to 5.0 for the first time, firmware .270 and battery life was tragic. Now I can reach 24 hours, but it's more or less 60%-70% of what I was getting with 4.4.4 (I do use Stamina Mode).
@oiseau Xposed works, I'm using it. Seems Amplify helps with battery life while we're at Xposed modules
@doenen thank you for your kind words. What are your observations after few days, still no issues?

1. Unistall them
2. They work ok
3. It works as always
4. SU working fine.
Ok, now sh*t got really messy
I'm unable to run any sort of recovery. No matter what I do, I can't go into recovery mode. I've tried flashing via fastboot TWRP recovery and still no result.
I've also tried to "install" recovery from the instructions from this link -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647480 with no luck doe.
any suggestions?
@denishome off the top of my head, what I would do
1. Read the sticky Z1 Compact Resource Thread -|-Rooting-BL Unlocking-Firmware & More...
2. Proceed with flashing stock ROM (FTF file)
3 root the device
4. install Recovery.
5. (optional) flash other pre-rooted ROM if needed.
Maybe you wanted shorter method but this one will surely work.
Just read the sticky before you start, download all needed files to your hard drive, it shouldn't be a problem for you it's not a hard process to follow.
Hey! The ROM was working well for me however I think KitKat is a lot more efficient concerning battery life. Since I find this to be one of the most important aspects of a ROM I switched back to modified stock KitKat.
Xposed, CWM, root, everything was working fine...
ok just to give a little heads up for the future users. If you encounter by any chance same problems as I did, simply update your kernel to be able to go into recovery - for me this worked flawlessly -> [5.0][Kernel Z1C][.283 source][V 3.1] RockZ1L Kernel [29/06/2015]
Hi, just a quick question I don't have any custom recovery installed at the moment since I lost my root when I upgraded to the .270 FW, but would I still be able to flash my phone with the .283 FW via FlashTool?
Can I flash it via Flashtool? (sorry, I'm a beginner to this )

No, You require a recovery(TWRP) to flash it.

[GUIDE] Systemless Root of your Nook Tab S2 710

With Barnes & Noble now selling the Galaxy Tab S2 710 (32gb) for $299 in the U.S. (and an extra 10% off if you're a B&N member), I picked one up yesterday and immediately came here to research rooting and set up. What I found were a lot of guides written a while ago, and a lot of confusing (at least to me) information. So I thought I would consolidate, in one place, in a new thread, what I eventually did, on the assumption that there might be a lot of new Tab S2 owners in the coming weeks. Obviously, you undertake these steps at your own risk, and YMMV. Also, hopefully equally obviously, none of the fantastic tools here are original with me -- credit goes to all those, like chainfire, ashyrx, wanam, engine95 and many more who have built and/or developed them.
1. If your Tab comes with anything but 5.1.1 XXU2BPB1, feel free to take the OTA update. In the US, it's the most current build as of 4.30.16 and you will still be able to root.
2. If you don't already have it, download Odin 3.10.7. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
When you run Odin in Windows, probably better to run it in administrator mode (right click on the icon), although I haven't always found that to be necessary.
3. Flash a Custom Recovery using the PDA tab of Odin. Put your Tab into Download mode by turning it off, then pressing and holding the Home, Power and Volume Down buttons all at the same time. When the download screen comes up, press the Volume Up button to continue. Now you're ready to attach your Tab to your PC. Load TWRP 3.0.2-1 from Ashyx's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-7-x-lollipop-5-1-1-t3205686 into Odin. Follow his instructions carefully -- once the custom recovery flashes, you have to manually reboot into the new recovery (so untick the auto-reboot option in Odin) or else your new custom recovery gets overwritten and you go back to your stock recovery.
4. Backup your Stock Rom -- While you're still in TWRP (or if you've already rebooted, go back to it), it would make sense to do a full backup of your stock ROM. That way you can restore your Tab to its original state if you ever need or want to.
5. Root -- Here's where I found the most confusion on these forums. You can do a systemless root -- i.e., keeping a stock, SE Enforcing, kernel (as opposed to flashing a permissive kernel and always getting the red SE Noneforcing Kernel message on a reboot and/or needing to use CF-Auto-Root). All you need to do is install Super SU 2.71 (BETA). Get the zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133 and put it on your Tab. Then flash using the "Install" choice within your TWRP recovery. Reboot -- and when TWRP asks you whether you want to install SuperSU because you're not rooted -- you have to say "NO" (OK, that's counterintuitive, but chainfire's instructions are clear).
5. Debloat -- That's beyond this thread's scope, but I recommend Titanium Backup from the Play Store. If you want to get rid of the "Nook" logo on reboot, flash the zip file from post #2 of Engine95's thread (using TWRP) found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/rom-neked-nook-oj1-5-1-1-710-t3317823
6. SD Card Fix -- if you find your third party apps can't write to your SD Card, the attachment below describes how to fix it. If this type of editing scares you (make a backup first!), the Play Store app SD Card Fix supposedly still works with Lollipop and you can try that.
7. Netflix Fix -- for some reason, Netflix doesn't like root on the Nook Tab. The fix for this is as simple as renaming the file "system/lib/liboemcrypto.so" (using a root explorer of your choice) as "system/lib/liboemcrypto.so.bak"
8. Xposed -- I happen to like Xposed and don't find it messes up anything, while giving you a ton of customization options. Installation is a two-step process. First, find the correct version of wanam's Xposed zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3180960, and flash it using TWRP. For Lollipop on the S2, I used his SDK 22-arm version (SDK 23 is for Marshmallow). Don't worry if the reboot takes a long time -- that's normal. Then, once rebooted, simply install wanam's Xposed apk (XposedInstaller_3.0_Alpha4) that's available in the same thread.
That's it. I hope this saves some of you a lot of my trial and error, and, if it does, please press the "thanks" button.
EDIT -- Here's a #9 I just discovered --- Microsoft Office apps, although pre-installed on the device, will not open once you're rooted (or maybe it's just flashing TWRP that does it). Moreover, if you uninstall and try a re-install from the Play Store, if you're like me, you'll get a device not compatible message. My solution was to sideload the apks (e.g., Word, Excel and Powerpoint) from my Note 4, but I suspect you could also change your device ID within your build.prop file (backup first!) and get a similar result.
ANOTHER EDIT (5.2.16) -- #10 -- I can't get Google Play Movies to work at all on my T710 after rooting. Tried renaming libemcrypto.so without luck. Tried editing boot.prop to disguise myself as a Nexus 10. Tried the Xposed module Root Cloak. All no good. Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks! I just got a new nook and have started to come into these forums and also noticed the old and randomly updated threads. I appreciate the clear instructions. Are there any roms right now that you are recommending?

GameWorld OS Kids Edition BETA ROM!

Happy new year everyone! I am back again with a sorta new ROM! Now parents don't need to buy the fire 7 kids edition for £100+! Simply just get the 5th gen, and root it first, do not connect to WiFi as that will update the device which we don't want!
Before installing, follow rootjunky's tutorial on rooting the tablet if its on 5.0, 5.1 or 5.3.1 as you need to know how to root the tablet before continuing!
Try one of these two videos from him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux-2b3X3BlI (5.0 or 5.1.1)
https://youtu.be/LfxfZkI_l4I (5.1.2)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xg73N_6A_W8 (5.3.1)
If you are on 5.3.2.0, follow a video from rootjunky or Superuser:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb1Jax6vWjk By Superuser (Windows Version)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iv0VcNM8IAw By rootjunky (Macintosh Version)
DO NOT DOWNGRADE LOWER THAN 5.3.1, OR YOU'LL HARD BRICK YOUR DEVICE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
If you are not on 5.3.2.0 but updated to a higher version, you cannot install my ROM unfortunately!
Here is another video on how to install a custom ROM on the tablet by Superuser:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l078mBChm44
This ROM contains root access, so a trusted teenager or adult can modify the system partition... It also has Google services built into the OS! It also contains the AppLock application so you parents can lock SuperSU, this is so kids don't accidentally ruin the system partition!
Three kid friendly things included currently are:
-Kidspuzzles
-Geometry Dash SubZero
-Monkey Stories
All the apps I included are in the system partition and can be removed via root!
Here is the ROM, based on Pure Nexus by "ggow", turn your tablet into a Nexus 7 kinda:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IPYKIDWUTl89jnHsAm5gZodqKNma_ys6/view?usp=sharing
Creator called "ggow" is the developer of "Pure Nexus"! Go check him/her out, he/she is a great software developer!
Hope you all enjoy
Do I get it right that the only prerequisite is a rooted 5th gen fire 7? For most of us then it's already too late, I'm afraid, as one not easily gets one... A lot has changed in the past year, not only have kids grown older...
How long would you expect for fresh install from a class 10 SD card? I thought I'd give it a try as I'm looking to repurpose my Fire HD 7 into something for my kids to mess around with. I flashed using FlashFire (including the "wipe" step first), and it's been sitting here on a screen with animated circles for over an hour...

Root and install twrp and custom ROM for J730F (8.1.0) via ADB >> without Odin [?] <<

Hi,
Since I use Linux I'm only left with the good ol' ADB and fastboot.
I know the questions are basic, but I'm rooting a phone once or twice a year, so I better be safe than sorry...
# Device:
j7y17lte
# Model
SM-J730F
# CPU Architecture
armv8l
# Android Version
7.0
Questions:
1. Which recovery to use for my phone? This one https://eu.dl.twrp.me/j7elte/ ? And how to install it via ADB????
2. What is the best procedure to root it? SuperSu, Magisk, Box?
3. I'm not into updating to latest versions of Android since 7 works for me just well. I'm more into removing bloatware and Google as much as possible. What is your opinion on that front? And also, if there is some super cute custom ROM which has Android version 8 or 9 or 10, do I just install it normally? If I remember upgrade will work , but downgrade is a bit tricky...?
4. And finally , which custom ROM do you recommend?
I know it's a lot to ask but even one answer will help me out a lot.
Thanks

will be fine but as a disclaimer android 7 is super old, and I do not hold any responsibility if you faces any problem using android 7.
I just now saw that I didn't thank you. Pardon me.
Heimdall gave no result, so I guess I'll have to do it over windows PC that I got my hands on these days.
Thanks anyhow. I didn't know about that project.
