Yeah, 4.4 hotspot is kinda borked. You can fix it by renaming the /data/misc/wifi directory as root to data/misc/borked. For some reason, it doesn't like that directory being there. Go figure, but fortunately, intuitive obvious solutions such as this are available sometimes to resolve these issues.
Ok cool.. And is there a mod or tweak I have to install or just edit those things?

Oh, I just noticed you're referring to the stock rom. That mod is for cm11. One of the main reasons I use cm11 is exactly for the hotspot. I'm afraid I can't be any help on the stock rom since I dumped it almost immediately when I got the phone, so I don't have any experience with it. However, there is a chance it shares this related issue with cm11, so you could try it, then undo the changes if it doesn't work since it's just a simple directory rename.
Ok cool!! How do I edit it? Do I need to download root browser and what are the steps,And is cm11 stable and does everything work on it?

If you're not rooted yet, follow the forum procedures to get rooted first.
if you are already rooted, it's easy. go into terminal emulator, or get it from the play store if you don't have it yet. In terminal emulator, type:
> su
> mv /data/misc/wifi /data/misc/borked
you can undo this change later by:
> su
> mv /data/misc/borked /data/misc/wifi
the su command is necessary and only works if you're rooted. If you successfully changed the name, then reboot and try the hotspot. If it doesn't work on NAE, then I would get my hotspot from cm11 instead. If I were you, I would start with the 6/9/2014 M6 SNAPSHOT version of cm11 found on the cyanogen website since that is probably the most stable at the moment. Everything works as far as I know, but if you need the most stable, you might want to consider going back to cm10.2 because it's solid, and also has hotspot with no tweaks like this necessary. Also, you will need to obtain gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip (for cm11), or gapps-gb-20130813-signed.zip (for cm10.2) and CWMrecovery-touch-6.0.4.7-jfltespr.img as part of your installation. Just follow the detailed procedures mentioned in the forum for installing custom recovery and roms. Finally, if you do decide to flash cm11, don't forget the mod above when you've finished, since that was the whole point in the first place
Ok yea new recovery I do have installed..

Now the question I am wondering is... Is it worth it? Potentially sacrificing root and CWR? I have been running 0.0.7.3 CM9 build for many months now and am curious to what you all think.
Pros/Cons? I've heard battery life is terrible, which is odd because I feel like I have good battery life on the CM9 Port. Also... Is root completely gone? Does OTA Rootkeeper help? My biggest concern (I'd probably even lose root if it is fixed), does the pen work as advertised? Or is the infamous 'pen wonk' bug still present?
Pen wonk = writing notes for ~10-15 minutes, pen is suddenly not responsive. Sleep/waking the device fixes it usually. This has been present in every stock Honeycomb build as well as all the CM9 Port builds so I am very curious if this is fixed because I believe it is a hardware issue (Lenovo please prove me wrong). Any info would be much appreciated.

I was able to go from a rooted, CWM'd device (US 64GB) to a fully rooted device without CWM.
After a few painful steps to get an old busybox file restored and stock recovery enabled, the upgrade process was very simple and so far it is working very well with ICS. There hasn't been enough time to judge battery life yet....
Make sure you follow the instructions that other's have posted about using RootKeeper. That is the only thing I needed to use to restore root perfectly.

That is good news about the ability to keep root. At least in keeping root, we should theoretically be able to restore CWR.

I did not have CWR to start.
I downloaded the update through the "update" menu on the device.
Update failed due to gps.conf being modified.
Reverted to what I thought was old gps.conf, update still failed.
Install CWR
Try update through CWR
Still fail, due to indigo being required in build.prop (this error is caused by CWR)
Commented out the Indigo lines in the update-script in the update
Flashed again
Still failed for gps.conf.
Commented out each line in update-script mentioning gps.conf
flashed again, it worked.
I take you flashed 310 first then 400?
Where is the script located?

I'm sorry for having to post here, I'm a new XDA member and I've just started using my tablet and found out I can't post in the dev section. I'm not sure how else to get help and a previous boyfriend told me the xda-developers community was a great place so I thought I would try here.
I have the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and I used WUG's method of rooting - everything went perfectly, but now I'm getting a notification that there is an update (an OTA update - I think that's what they are called?) and it doesn't apply. I'm not sure if I should have, but I did the bootloader unlock and installed a new recovery (TWRP - I think that's how it's spelled?. sorry again)...
Anyway.... At this point my tablet is working great, but I constantly see this notification for an update and I'm not sure what to do.. It says "touch to install" and I've done that but it just boots into my new recovery. If anybody has access to WUG in the dev forum, could you please ask him what I should do?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the WiFi only version or the LTE version? Also, under your settings -> about phone, what build number are you currently on? Since you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, OTA updates will not install correctly. You have a couple of options in this regards, and I or someone will go over them once we figure out what version you are running.

All your data will be preserved. Only Wipe the Cache/Dalvik Cache, not the Data. Before you install go to Wipe -> Advance -> Check only Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Typically when an update comes out, someone will post a flashable update within a couple of hours so we can install them as well. Hope it helps.
Edit: As always before flashing anything, make a backup, by rebooting into recovery and selecting Backup (i check all the boxes).

I believe so, Cyanogenmod usually merges the updates pretty quickly into the code and you won't get any update notifications from Google directly any more. There are only nightly releases so far for this device if you feel like going that route.

That's completely up to you and what you prefer... I like the stock android experience so far, but there are many options out there for custom ROMs besides CM. Take a look here and here and figure out if a ROM in there has something you want... the great thing about this is if you don't like it, flash something else until you find exactly what you like... that's how I plan to do it, once the ROMs get more stable with the 4.3 updates.

Hi All,
Not too familiar with Samsung development methods but bought S3 Korean SHV E210S, Luckily got 4.4.4 update, so for all those seeking to
1) Fix SMS 160 characters limit
2) International looking Dialer
3) Samsung Boot animation
4) SD card Write enabled
5) Removed Samsung apps, Knox , Korean Apps
All these stuff in one go in Flashable Zip without going through lots of hassle.
Also for those looking for Root and Recovery too, I have included guide below
Guide for those who have not yet flashed 4.4.4:
1. Download the Rom from sammobile from below link and flash using Odin (i used 3.09) in Downloadmode
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/35411/E210SKSUKNI3_E210SSKTKNI3_SKT.zip
2. Once Rom is booted, enter your accounts etc and then reboot into download mode again and download Flash TWRP Recovery from below link and flash using Odin (its for i9300- works for us)
http://techerrata.com/get/twrp2/i9300/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-i9300.tar
3. Now boot into recovery and flash the All in One Fix that I made
4. Stay in recovery and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.13.zip to obtain root. You can download from link below
http://download.chainfire.eu/567/SuperSU/
5. Once you boot into system, open SuperSU, it might ask for updating binary, do it and reboot again
Thats it..
Additionally you can use Wanam Xposed from PlayStore which is very useful for all other mods.
Have fun..
PS: I dont have any problem if Mods want to mix it with the Huge S3 Koreans thread. It was a bit too congested so i thought i should make a separate thread
DOWNLOAD for All in One Fix :
https://www.mediafire.com/?shdxdw6hw3ayvjx
Thanks to
Chainfire
TWRP Team
Desamsungtizer script i used from S4 development from this thread which I Edited to include many other bloatwares specific for E210S
Thanks a lot, I have been searching for months for these fixes. I have posted questions on the "huge E210S" thread but had not obtained any response until now. This is exactly what I needed!
However, after running your fix on my rooted E210S with stock 4.4.4 ROM, the debloating also removed many non-SKT apps such as the "ordinary" Video and Music apps, and also Voice Dialer gone as well! I don't know whether this was supposed to happen or is it a specific problem for me...

You guys are right, I will fix it sooner but a quick fix is to install Wanam Xposed from playstore, it will ask to download Xposed installer, do it, then reboot and in Modules select Wanam Xposed. Then open Wanam Xposed and messaging option in it, select disable Sms to Mms conversion.

Hi,
I recently rooted my S5 successfully and then got rid of touchwiz and installed Cyanogenmod 13. But then I realized that the root was gone from my phone. So I rooted again and now Cyanogenmod won't boot. (Stuck on Cyanogenmod booting animation.)
I have an S5 g900I (Oceania edition).
I'm guessing the mod went away because I wiped the system through recovery before installing CM but why can't I root again? If anyones had the problem previously which is the best version to go with? I might try CM12.1 now just to be sure. But any ideas?
Thank you

Flash the latest update supersu.zip and root your phone. I think now you can use supersu2.46.zip on aosp 6.0.1. I've done it and works for me. If not then use the latest systemless root by chainfire. The one that works for me is 2.62. Try 2.46 first. Thanks @Chainfire for all of your hard work and making it easy to root our phones. Good luck
CM13 has root built into the ROM.
Go to settings -- > about device, tap on "Build number" enough times until the Developer options appear, and enable root from within the developer menu.

I didn't try that since after wiping everything again I realized by installing CM13 your phones changes to g900f which is the international version and by installing the root for that version all works good. Thank you for your quick response

That's actual hell cool but as mentioned above fixed it some other way.
The only other problem I'm having with CM13 which is really annoying is that it seems like its not as optimized for my phone. It overheats and drains the battery way too quickly. Any ideas for that? Thanks

Yes, it's NFC that's causing the issue. Use a root browser and delete the folder /system/app/NfcNci - try that.

Fair enough. I don't use NFC anyways so I'll give that a shot
Hello hello,
So I reverted to my old i337 (ATT) because my S6 is defect and Samsung are hanging me out to dry (whole other story there). That being said, this i337 was on CM 11 4.4.4 but had the home-brew version, a slew of issues and so on. It did have root though.
I managed to install TWRP 2.8, CM 12.1 official build and it works flawlessly up until now. Except, I lost root. I'm puzzled too because running Motochopper tells me it's already rooted, and if I install Superuser form Play it seems to recognize the root, but then tells me I need to update, which fails. If I try to install any root app, nothing works.
Interestingly, I had to temporarily downgrade to CM 11 throughout this to troubleshoot a bug with GApps, and even after "losing" root to CM 12, in 11 I still had root! Back to CM 12 and out the root again. I've looked through threads and the only thing I found remotely close was to go back to 4.2.2 stock, then flash, then upgrade again... I'm trying to find another way since everthing else works fine...
Seems like it's a question of root method having changed in Lollipop, but that's really the extent of my knowledge.
As always, any help would be appreciated!
Denis

Did you enable developer options, then go down to root access and enable it from there?

That is such a noob comment!! Did I enable... pfff! Of course... I... uh... oh. Yeah I guess that's a new option then, is it? *nervously whistling away*
PS: thanks! had no idea that was a thing I've updated my sig to celebrate.

Wait! So you have CM12 on your ATT S4?
I spent 6 hours yesterday and managed to instal golden eye 53. But I'd like to try installing cm12.
Can you point me the link of the relevant thread?
Thanks

Yes and I can say that aside from very minor bugs (such as I can't get weather to work) it's by far the best ROM I've had on this phone! The nice thing too is it's officially supported.
First you can download the ROM here; I used the last stable release for 12.1, right at the top.
For instructions I would suggest to go on the official wiki for the jflteatt, but make sure you are using TWRP version 2.8.7.0. I was on a CWM custom recovery which worked fine for 4.4.4, but when I flashed 5.1 it was plagued with crashes and GApps were completely useless - even if it did technically work. Trust me, this will save you a lot of time and it's not really mentioned anywhere.
Also stay away form TWRP version 3.0; when I tried to install it it re-locked my boot loader (somehow) and I had to fiddle-fsck around a lot with it to bypass it again.
But outside this, it was a flawless install for me! Hope this helps.

No problem man. There is also a setting in Super User to override the CM root setting iirc. Just FYI

Yeah I had tried that but it wouldn't do anything. I've followed your advice and now it works perfectly. Thanks again!

Thank you very much,
I got excited for few minutes, then I followed the instructions link, and saw that big red banner of warning saying only MDL and MDB can use it.
And I am on OC3 (5.0.1) so I guess I'm out of luck!
