Hi all,
All of this talk about the video performance etc has me wondering.
I've tried encoding videos in the past to play on other devices, but I never have an appropriate time to watch them.
When do people watch these videos?
I guess whilst commuting?
I just never have the time for this, and when I do I'm at home so can watch on the laptop/telly.
Would appreciate some enlightenment !
multimedia
I think most people are looking for an all-in-one phone. I dont think one exists. Im like you and dont watch enough multimedia to matter, but some people do use that a lot. I dont feel like the HD is the one for all phone pda, but for me it does everything just well enough. I do agree if someone wants perfect playback or perfect screen or whatever, then they may not find it on the HD. I too would suggest a laptop to go along with the HD. To me, the HD does, (so far) a good job of everything, maybe not excellent in all areas, but it is approaching that. It all depends on what people want in a pdaphone. Im very happy with it, coming from a Touch Diamond.
I wouldl watch the videos whilst commuting yes.
I happen to travel through my city on average of 2.5 hours a day, sometimes even 3, and it just so happens that it's very boring on the bus and lately i find that with all the shows i'm watching, i just don't have the time to watch them at home, so an HD with smooth video playback would've been perfect for me, but HTC and Qualcomm had to ruin my dreams
Watched "Sunshine" on the train home today, was 98% perfect, avi was higher rez than the HD display and didnt drop a beat even in the mild fight seen...all good

Was it DivX and MP3 audio encoded do you know?
This is encouraging. I have also seen many clips on youtube, of what looked like great quality video playing fine on the HD. I'm hoping that the debates over awful video playback are concerning those who wish for higher quality content than I use on my phone. I ordered mine this evening hope to have it saturday !!
....IB a n e
Yer...twas a divx and i think mp3, played around with coreplayer a bit and now working smooth, will try an action movie and post my settings, tiz good though, really notice the higher rez next to a iphone...can barely see the pixels on the HD gui
Whilst commuting, on lunch/breaks at work/school... I hate the fact I drive now instead of commute to work - but at least I still have my lunch half-hour and two 15 minute breaks!
I don't see what everyone's problem with the HD video playback is though! I watched Wolverine And The X-Men fine!
I noticed on an ipod touch 4, that the quality was HD.
I wonder why the the quality on the Android devices play in HQ.
Side by side, makes me cry to see what I am lacking.
Just odd Google's major product plays better on a non-Google device.

I haven't used YoutTube App much BUT is there a point of playing it at higher quality?
480p = 640 x 480
480p = 704 x 480
our screens = 800 x 480
The benefit we get from 720p -> 480p is fairly minimum as you can see :/
Kinda making this up, but it might be because of the higher resolution display that the iphone and itouch have.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yea the iphone 4 and ipod touch 4 does have a higher resolution
But when you're watching on a 4" screen does it really matter? Not trying to watch a movie off Youtube after all.

que? are those resolutions the old crappy TV lines that werent really even 480i?
480p= 720x480
720p ( i assume you meant) = 1280x720
So if our phones are 800x480, 480p would be a better image than a scaled 720p, I seriously doubt our phones have the scalers of most modern TVs or Monitors. Native resolution is pretty much always better. (the widescreen images being letterboxed 480p like out of a dvd player).
Yeah they have amazing, almost unnecessary resolution for a 3.5" screen. Great for text readability, but so is SAMOLED
So anyways, if a 960x640 (apple) device is actually defaulting to scaling 720p down, theyre actually shooting themselves in the foot... unless their scaler is a faroudja... but with iOS its all about status, so having that little indicator on the screen say HD, even though the device falls a bit short of actually delivering, and degrading the image by scaling when it is not necessary on such a small device (any phone), it just makes us look better . Wow, im used to having these discussions relating to CRT projectors, not phones So yeah, stick to native resolution or smaller.
That said, if our TV out option worked, then 720p or whatever the best output is would be a good default, if that option were plugged in.

I meant what I meant but I forgot one 720 x 480..there are multiple standards for 480p based on the sample such as4:3 (640x480)..

Regardless of the quality the iphone degrades, it still looks better...that's what he meant lol so if it looks better with a scaled down 720p, imagine regular 720p

I am not talking about the resolution of the screen. I realize the iphone/ipod have higher res than our phones, and that relates to the sharpness. But I am talking about the actual content quality is actually much higher definition, as it takes longer to buffer because of this aswell. I know the Android app is better overall vs IOS version.
I watch alot of HD [HQ on our phones] of car videos and such, and yes it bothers me that it is not the best it can.
Not anything worth whining about Would be cool if we had [3g/mobile] [HQ] and [HD] options.
This is XDA, maybe we can hack it lol
*Thanks for all the replies by the way
Duh, been too long since I dealt with SD... you are correct.
But as far as 'looks good', its subjective, and looking at my friends touch, I really dont think video is even close... text is awesome... but theres too many factors, such as were you using youtube apps, or the actual site? Really though, I guess it boils down that you really prefer resolution over color, clarity, etc of the samoleds.... But everyone has their preference, I still prefer my Barco 808s projector running 720p CRT at 120" over most 1080p TVs... But to be fair most TVs are crap...

Yeah I noticed that too, compared even to my old iphone 3gs I just watch youtube videos using Dolphin Hd browser with AdobeAir flash installed, quality is definetly better than on YouTube app.
What I'm more concerned with now is actually watching a youtube video and not watching 3 seconds of it, it skipping, and then having to start over because it fails to load completely
The old youtube app was horrible and would always do that but the new one has been awesome so far.
Yea that's true, the new is way better for reliability lol

download a program called tubemate from the market. its free.
when you use this app, you browse it just like you would youtube , but when you watch a video you have 2 options. watch or download. when you watch it steams in poor quality, however if you download you can play it back in HD. its pretty cool. you can even download 720p ( on 4g its pretty quick)
Looks like she doesn't like 720p mkv video. Rock player (old version) plays at like 5fps. Meridian locks up and video player doesn't support that file type with this phone. Could it be this phone isn't meant to be a good multimedia phone?
Heh, I'm emailing devs with logs a lot with progs that aren't working. Ya gotta love new phones!
'vplayer' works rock solid for me (no pun intended!)... the alpha one (yeah, I ante'd up and paid the donation, well the first 100 user donation that is...even though the devel had said it would stay free forever, I love the app and felt he earned compensation). I use it on the Tab (Sprint) i have gratis (thanks to work).
I played a mkv of old school 720p and and a hi-def wmv (pr0n, lol) ..both work fine w/ 0 lag. All my xvids and flv's and mp4's have worked flawlessly. I ripped the old school file myself from a hd-dvd copy I had used handbrake on, a longgg time ago.
Ill try some other mkv's that are newer...Girl With a Dragon Tattoo...and a few others when I have some time away from work.
I'm thoroughly impressed...of course, I was stuck back on a TP2/WM 6.5 for a handset, so of course I stand to be impressed, lol. I was using my lappy for any mkv / 'hi-def' content prior.
Cheers!
I'm downloading it now. I deleted the mkv I had on the phone darn it. The first two episodes of stargate universe. I hope they release the swiss army knife of media players, vlc on android. Yeah I know thats actually perian catch phrase.
I found a video player that did a little better but still was unwatchable. It was called vital player. Just for laughs I pulled the card out of the shift and put it its big brother. It played just a little better than the shift but still unwatchable. The frame rate was little better and the sound skipped less. That makes for an interesting benchmark. The cpu on the evo was a tiny bit more powerful enough to make a slightly noticable improvement in playback. I imagine a 1.09 gb mkv with 48khz sound (maybe 5.1, I don't know) and its about 45 minutes of the episode I was testing, the bitrate was just too high for the phone's cpu to decode. Hell, watching it on my 2ghz macbook makes the fans kick on high and does a decent job of eating up a battery charge.
I think, just my opinion, the epic was maybe a little better suited for watching movies than both evos. I don't remember how well it played the same kind of file but I think it played good enough for it to be watchable. No major frame rate slowdown or jumpy audio. I'm also noticing that video players that I used on the epic played more different video codecs than the shift does. These same players and files are refusing to play on the shift now. I imagine there's more codecs installed on the epic. I think one of its features was it would play divx out of the box. The evo shift isn't as versatile.
I guess you gotta trade some features for others. Recording high quality audio on the epic was bad. It studdered like crazy. Recording 720p on it made the video app crash. High quality audio recording is flawless on both evos. I have yet to test the shift with 720p video recording. I need to see if it craps out like the epic or compresses too much leaving some artifacts like the evo.
I will post my results when I get around to playing more with video recording.
There must be a way to install additional codes on the Evo's though. The Epic does it so well probably due to the GPU.

I don't have a Shift yet, but am hoping to shortly.
What bitrate does the phone record the high def videos as? Whatever bitrate/audio rate the phone records at, it probably plays back those same files without hiccups. If so, try compressing your videos to the exact same bitrate and see if that works.
You have a good point and that would probably work. One problem would be it would be a pain in the ass to convert anything you want to watch. It can record in 720p but I know that the video and audio bitrate isn't as good or high as hdtv 720p mkv's.

Odd. The shift processor is actually under clocked to 800 mhz. Its the second generation of the one in the evo and so it should be just as fast. I've run benchmarks and the two perform on par:
Smartbench:
Evo: 1102/1172
Shift: 789/1120
Clocked at 1ghz the shift should outperform my evo. Just don't tell my wife <.<

Also, just used vPlayer to test 1080p avi playback and it was flawless.
I just ran videospec on a file and it said its video bitrate was 3693 Kbps. That's a lot of information trying to go through a small pipe...
With 720x480 dvds I encode with handbrake, I usually don't go higher than 2000kbps. The phones usually don't have a problem with that speed in playback.
OK,
I have just returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16Gb) to the store after suffering the "Newtons Ring / Oil Spill" phenomenon, and after the store assistant told me that someone else had returned 2 with the same problem, and BOTH store display models have the same issues, I decided not to get a new one. So now I am in the market for a new tablet. (And to get rid of my Dock, Book cover and SD / USB Connection Kit, Dock - Used, Book Cover - Unopened and SD / USB Connection Kit - Unopened - but thats another story).
So I am thinking about moving away from Tegra 2 after having problems getting it to play High Profile HD video due to the underpowering of the Tegra 2 chipset.
I am considering the Archos G9, which has a Texas Instruments ARM dual-core CORTEX A9 OMAP 4 chip (1Ghz to 1.5Ghz), which Archos claim will play High Profile HD video.
Are there any tabs that you think I should consider?
I realise that this is a Galaxy Tab forum, but I have read some good advice from users of this forum section.
Thanks

This.
Add to it that they're big and heavy based on the published specs.
If you're not a big video (streaming and local) user the HTC Jetstream/Puccini is a great tablet. It'll probably be released in Europe this Fall.
If you want a good thin alternative to the Tab 10.1, the new OMAP-powered Toshiba AT200 looks like a good bet, if it releases in the near future.
I think you might need to wait for the next generation of tablets. The GT10 is as good as it gets right now. After the new year there will be several more options but as of now, there's nothing that will get you high profile video and build quality at the same time. A quick question about the newton rings: could you actually see them when the screen was turned on?

One of these two options.
Or you can get a Blackberry Playbook, I have one and it plays 1080p videos without a sweat, you can even multitask while the video is playing without a single frame being skipped!!! The HDMI output is the best of any tablet on the market, and the screen is top notch.

The Playbook is using the same OMAP CPU as the aforementioned Toshiba AT200, except clocked at 1GHz as opposed to the 1.2GHz of the Toshiba.
So if it can rattle through 1080p videos, there's a good chance the Toshiba will be able to as well.
It's the GPU, the PowerVR SGX GPUs are something pretty special.
Nope, not underpowered, just a crap video player supplied with the stock rom. I thought it was true until I found dice player. With dice I have had no trouble playing any video so far. The 4 gb file size limit is more of an issue that finding a proper video player.

No even with dice player, it can't play 1080p high profile video. Tegra 2 is so weak that it even stutters playing some YouTube videos.

Tegra2 only support H.264 [email protected] and no weighted prediction B-frames.
For me thats okay, no need to play higher resolution on the tab than 720p anyway. Only problem is having to recode high res videos.
And about the 4gig limit. You can copy larger files too, over wireless if you have the time. (which takes a ****load of time, is there any other way to copy larger files to the tab, and maybe even faster?)

The HP Touchpad can do it if somebody writes a decent media player for it. I've tried remuxing 1080p h264 videos (to reencode the audio while keeping video intact) and it plays the videos very smoothly with stock player. Waiting patiently for Android to come so I can try DicePlayer and others with the TouchPad.

Never understood the desire to play full 1080p monster video files on a tablet. I love watching full size on my huge plasma but on the tablet it is just a waste to play such a large file. I batch encoded some for playimg on the tablet for trip a while back with handbrake and all I had to do was limit three bit rate. The video looked perfect and with dice player it never stuttered.
Each to hire one I guess, but this is much better than watching on my phone and the form factor is perfect.

It's just a matter of convenience. Would you prefer reencode all the videos if it could be avoided? And not everybody has a computer fast enough to do so quickly. On my intel E8400, a 2hour movie will take about half a day.
It's an extra step that should be unnecessary. It limits how you can use your tab since you just can't drag & drop videos on a whim not knowing if it'll play. Also it's not awaste if you're using it to feed an hdtv.
Were people expecting the first generation tablets to be blu ray players too? This is complaining just for the sake of complaining.

I don't see the point playing 1080p video on tablet either. Speaking of convenient, I think it's more convenient just to download smaller 720p videos and not have to worry about file size and such.

The reason I ask is because all of the tv shows I will watch on this will be in 720p. Movies will be at 1080p at best.
Will the super high resolution of the screen actually work against me, making my media look like crap?
For example, watching something in 480p format on even a 5 inch, 1080p phone screen looks like garbage.

Given that it has 2/3 the subpixels as a traditional RGB LCD, and 1/2 the RGB subpixels, I'm not quite convinced it's kill, let alone overkill.
Has the price been confirmed at $600? I was hoping the baseline wifi model would be $500.
Anyway one of my primary use cases is pdf reading so no I don't think the high PPI is overkill. For me it's one the prime selling points along with the S-pen.

If you think the current model is overkill on the resolution, then buy the outgoing model with 1280x800 resolution, you can get a 16GB WiFi for $449, but it should drop further.

I have the Nexus 10 with the same resolution. It is not overkill. I had the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the higher resolution screen is a big step up. I wouldn't go back to a lower resolution tablet ... period. Video looks great on the screen and youtube looks great on the screen. The higher resolution is superb for reviewing photos, web, pdf's/reading ... every thing looks great on the screen. There is absolutely no downside to the screen resolution.

Awesome, thanks for your input.
Feel a lot better about pulling the trigger on this thing.

Wow.
I feel bad for your friends.
And family.
Thanks to the rest of you for not getting twisted panties over a simple question.
I'm definitely picking this up, I'm just wondering about the display. Why do you guys say it's barely kill, much less overkill? I have to admit this is my first AMOLED experience on such a huge screen, so I'm curious, that's all.

I think just above the "standard" for tablets around this size. To answer your question; no your movies will not look bad.
It doesn't matter that the video material is lower resolution than the screen resolution. What matters is that the higher the pixel density, the clearer the picture. Plus, the 720p material scales perfectly to the Note since it is exactly 4 times the resolution. Video on my Note compared to my 1280 x 800 Transformer Prime screen is like night and day.
It is definitely not overkill.
I think high resolution videos (720p and 1080p) look great on this tablet, 480p looks bad in comparison on any larger screen, especially if you're viewing at close distances even if it didn't have a high resolution. The best thing about the high resolution is reading text.
