[Q] how to restore old sms from secmms.odex file - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys
note 3 4.4.2 rooted
i deleted my stock sms app and replaced with galaxy s5 message app. but my old sms are gone too. i got file called secmms.odex is this back up of my old sms? if it is so how i can new message app to reload these sms? thank you

No. Is the odex file from a non deodexed firmware. It's likely your sms messages are gone for good if the s5 app overwrote the sms database.

I added the ss. That odex file 4.2 MB I thought it was small backup. If it's not a back up what is that and shall delete it

Not sure it you have lost your old messages but you need secmms.apk as well

sms are stored in data/data. As long as it was not overwritten by the new S5 secmms.apk it should be there. Try using sms backup and restore. Not sure if it's going to work if secmms.apk and secmms.odex corrupted or not replaced correctly.

Can't update my nexus 4 because of the mms.apk

I use the cyanogenmod mms.apk for text messages. When I was on 4.2.2 I couldn't update because I replaced a system file which was the mms.apk. I had a copy of the original stock mms which I just reinstalled and was able to update to 4.3 no problem. Now I'm trying to install the newest update but I can't because of the same issue. I tried to install the stock mms.apk but it's not working. Any ideas on what to do? Is there a way to get the stock mms.apk?

Is there a way to keep my texts on both Tom's during duel booting? Like having my texts on aosp brought over to a TW rom?

Use titanium backup. Backup before rebooting, restore upon booting into your other ROM. The SMS DB should be compatible, personally I didn't have any issues, but YMMV.
Edit: More specifically, backup the yellow element titled "Messages (SMS & MMS)"
I've tried but I get backup failed -.-

[Q] 4.3, Rooted, unable to connect to Kies3. I need to back up/restore

I'm trying to back up my device with Kies before I factory reset it so I can take it back in for warranty replacement but I'm not able to connect to it. It shows it connected but then times out with an error saying "unable to connect".
I'm curious if this has anything to do with being rooted or having the OTA update files frozen with TiBu.
Any other ideas on to how to back up my device?
Can't you just copy over nandroid files or something?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have to be rooted on the new device for nandroid to restore the back up, right?
My main concern is my connection to Kies. It connects and then disconnects because the phone "isn't respinding". Is it because I'm rooted and have the OTA files frozen? Is my 4.3 release not official enough for it to be compatible with the newer version of Kies? Curious if anyone else is having this problem..

Kies never worked well for me. And unfortunately, there is no good way to backup an android device as easily as an Apple device. I'm assuming you'd like to have an easy way to restore your new device once you receive it. That isn't going to happen
Samsung/at&t have also made it more difficult. You'll probably get a new device with nb1 firmware which currently isn't rootable. So restoring from titanium is going to be difficult.
Here's what I would do:
1 copy and paste all your pictures, music, etc from your device to your pc
2 use helium backup to backup your apps and data, see play store
3 make sure you have Google backup your apps and data too, settings, backup & restore
When you get your new device, Google will most likely restore your apps and data. For your pics, etc you'll want to copy those back to your device. If Google doesn't work you have helium as a backup.

Don't forget you can also use adb backup to backup your device.

Thanks for the replies.
I had a general idea of what needed to be done. What I'm really worried about reloading is my sms/mms messages.
I'll look into all these options and report back with what I did.

Accidentally deleted the stock Apks when testing the S5 apps.
Haven't been able to extract them from the firmware. I am on 4.4.2 NB8, is there anyway someone can upload Stock secMMS.apk & SecTelephonyprovider.apk if possible?
Thanks.
any updates here? did you fixed this?

From memory I had to delete all the problematic apps and then reflash stock rom. Im sure there is an easier way.
