I made a post about this issue before, but have more details so hopefully someone can help me figure out this issue.
My phone even when unplugged from my PC continuously says USB Connected/ USB Debugging in the notification menu.
Also, when I try and reboot the phone, instead of booting even to the Vibrant logo screen, the loading circle continuously blinks on and off, without actually booting.
As I type this, I am not holding down the power button, and the loading circle is blinking on and off by itself....
I used to be able to turn the phone on into recovery mode in the past, but now when I try to reboot into recovery I get a big yellow picture that says "Downloading"
The only way the phone will turn on is if it is plugged in.
I am fairly certain that this reboot issue and the USB issue are correlated in some way.
Did anyone else have this issue with their phones? And if so, how did you solve it?
Another thing I have just discovered...
When the phone is on and idle, the USB Connection notification will constantly blink on and off, which is why I think the phone would do the same when trying to power on!
Is this a hardware issue or a software issue?
I have not flashed anything in a very long time before this issue started happening so I believe a restore is unnecessary .
Someone please help me! This is very annoying, not only do I have NO notification bar because of the constant USB Connection notification turning on and off, I cannot turn on my phone at all unless it is plugged in!

I carry the insurance, so personally if this was happening to me I would not even mess with it. It sounds like you have a genuine problem with the phone and it needs to be replaced.
If it is possible to do try a nandroid backup of your phone to make getting back to where you are on your new device easier. Then take your phone back to stock with the recovery image here -->

One you have a stock device see if you are still having the issue. If you are take it back as defective. Even if you don't have the insurance, that sounds like a factory defect and should be covered by the factory warranty. The insurance just makes the process easier and makes sure they just give you a swap out at the store rather than having to wait for repairs. It also covers things the warranty does not, such as screen breakage - which is the specific reason I carry the insurance.
Ah crap wish I had insurance.... Do I have to do that whole odin procedure or is there a one click un root procedure as well?

I actually have not had reason to go back to stock, or even use odin yet at this point. My only roms were .zip files that I flashed via clockwork recovery.
I would say that your best best it to just follow the instructions on justanothercrowd's thread very carefully and deliberately. You are already having issues with reboots and your USB port, so this is not the time to deviate into experiments.
So to cut you off and just answer you next three questions:

Sorry, I can't help much beyond that. You chose to modify your phone and risk that you would not have issues, just like the rest of us here. In your case you did have issues. Now you have to get it back to stock so they don't have any reason to claim you caused this or that your warranty is void. I hope all goes well and it works out for you. We must have been typing at the same time LOL.
There is a thread on unrooting, and basically it is just deleting a few things. After doing this you should not have any non-stock applications on the phone and there would be no reason to think it was rooted unless they went digging on the file system. Personally, I would delete those telltale files just in case, it looks a little suspicious to bring in a phone that looks like it has not been used since you bought it, but they have no proof you did anything and you can claim that you first did a factory reset to see if it would fix the problem.
Just want to keep this thread going, as I am having the exact same issue as the OP as of today. It happened out of the blue, and I haven't flashed anything new to my phone since JI6 was released, other than that, it's just a stock, rooted phone.
Hoping someone has an idea, but I will likely get it replaced under warranty, since the GPS has never worked either.

Random question about clockword mod recoveries.
If I were to do a backup right now, and save that file to my computer, could I restore that file later on a different phone after I root my replacement?
I don't have that many mods flashed, and I know all of the apps can be synced, but still it would be sooo convenient .
I believe that is how it works, so yes. It should be no different then when you clone a hard drive to put the image on multiple computers for easy distribution.
It is (just like the cloning metaphor) hardware specific. Just like I could not purchase a upgrade computer and expect a cloned image to work, don't expect to create a Vibrant backup and restore it on a Captivate.
That said, you should be able to restore your backup to new (identical) hardware.
By the way, what is the warranty on these? I thought it was a year for defects. I didn't think the Vibrant had been around long enough yet for anyone to be off warranty.
it should be a year, but there was also the option for a purchased warranty. I did not purchase a warranty, so I should be good on just my manufacturer's defect warranty

By now folks realize there are different hardware variances for the touchscreen which is one reason why some people have issues and others do not.
Don't you hate it when you have a workable system, then an update comes along which fixes something, let's say GPS, but then your touchscreen goes down the tubes? Suddenly you have dead spots, dead bands, ghost/phantom touches, stuck touches, broken drags, etc. Touchscreen works ok when held or plugged in, but is unusable on a table?
Never fear, I've put together packages to handle 3 different variances of the touchscreen.
I was able to make the touchscreen usable again on 3 of 4 test units. The 4th was always bad even out of the box so it might be hopeless for that one.
I do NOT claim this will fix everyones' touchscreen and that isn't even the goal as it might be an impossible task.
The goal is to make 70-80% of the problem units usable (again), but even if only 50% become usable this is an improvement over the current situation.
On to the packages:
In the attached boot-ts.7z file you'll find 4 files:
boot-ts10-lock.img
boot-ts20-lock.img
boot-ts30-lock.img
boot-ts-unlock.img
the ts10, ts20, and ts30 packages handle 3 variances on the touchscreen
You basically try each one to see which works best for your particular touchscreen.
Once you find one (and hopefully you do) then it is locked in place so future updates won't mess up your touchscreen again. No more OTA performance anxiety.
Now let's say there is an update in the future which has touchscreen fixes you want to use, that is where the 4th package comes into play. Once you use the ts-unlock image, you will once again be using touchscreen updates from the manufacturer. If that update doesn't work out, you can go back and use the ts10/20/30 package that was working for you.
Ok, so how does all this work?
I tried to make the process as simple as possible (has been tested on JWR66N, JSS15J, and JSS15Q, will work on LTE and custom ROMs also):
Your bootloader must be UNLOCKED to use these packages. Unlocking your bootloader is covered in this post.
unpack the boot-ts.7z package using 7-zip
you'll be left with a boot-ts directory with the aforementioned files
connect your tablet by USB
make sure USB debugging is enabled
Settings->About tablet [tap "Build number" 7 times]
Settings->Developer options [check "USB debugging"]
you can find adb/fastboot drivers HERE
in a command prompt in the boot-ts directory type (commands in italics)
adb reboot bootloader
wait for the bootloader screen to come up
alternatively use Power+VolDown to get to the bootloader/fastboot screen
fastboot boot boot-ts10-lock.img
this is how you try out package ts10
the screen will hang for 18-24 seconds, this is NORMAL, do not touch
this does NOT flash over your existing kernel
wait until Android is COMPLETELY booted
Note: if you are on Android 4.4 the stock 4.3 kernel will not get past the BouncingBalls
wait 120 seconds for the boot to settle down
press/hold the Power button 10-15 seconds until the tablet reboots
proceed to next step
adb reboot
after booting to Android you MUST reboot at least once
IGNORE any instability up to this point, it is expected
if adb reboot does not work for some reason, use the power button to shutdown/reboot
once you are booted into Android the 2nd time, try out the touchscreen and see if it feels usable
if there is instability, give it one more reboot back into Android before judging
if things are not working acceptably
repeat step #3, with ts20, and ts30 if needed
hopefully between ts10, ts20, and ts30, you will have found a package that works for you
there is nothing else for you to do
you can reboot and use your normal ROMs, custom ROMs, stock kernels, custom kernels, etc.
your touchscreen package is locked in place and won't change unless you want it to
if you want to go back to the way it was before and/or you want a future touchscreen update from the manufacturer
repeat step #3 using boot-ts-unlock.img
upon first reboot you will have the touchscreen software from the installed ROM/kernel

ts-10: no more jumping in google maps while zooming/panning, but still jumping in other apps. after second reboot, starts jumping in maps again. after third reboot, no jumping on rightside of screen.

ts-20: lots of jumping on right side of the screen, zooming/panning in gmaps is still jumpy. after third reboot, still jumpy in gmaps.
ts-30: still jumps of right side of the screen, just a few mm from the right bezel,zooming/panning in gmaps is still jumpy. after second reboot, same effect. after third reboot, still jumpy on right side of screen.
so what exactly are in those files?

When you say lots of FCs, can you tell me what ROM/version you are running?
You should IGNORE any instability in that first boot. While you can boot into android using the files I'm providing (and in some cases run fine), there could be mismatches in versions depending on what you have currently installed, which is why I say in RED you must reboot at least once before the system will become stable.
Once you do that reboot, you are back on your original software with just the touchscreen controller updated.

You must IGNORE any results from that first boot for all the packages, especially since you are running CM because (on that first boot) you are essentially running CM with a stock kernel without any kernel mods CM may need.
On CM I would actually not pass judgment until perhaps a second reboot.
One shouldn't have as much instability in that first boot if they are running a stock ROM.
Can you compare the behavior to what you had before trying them out?
I presume you had some issues before, hence trying these out.

yes, ignored all FC's. no problem.
ts-10 is running perfectly, no more jumpy stuff. maps/right side of screen, hold and drag working great too.
I really appreciate how much effort you've put into helping others with troubled devices here.
Could we get some clarification on what exactly the 3 packages are? Are these touchscreen settings customized by you or simply the settings from each of the 3 versions of 4.3 we have had available to us?
You sent me here from the other thread and i must thank you, the ts10 one worked fine and now no screen problems, cancelled my replacement. Just a question though, if you tap hard on the camera corner of the tablet whilst holding it in the air, do you hear a small rattle?
It is the touchscreen controller software.

Every unit has the rattle. Some louder than others. It is normal. Possibly the lens or focusing mechanism.

i've been a long time lurker at the xda forums and your multitouch fix made me register and become a member just to say thanks. ts10 fixed my multitouch issues, going to observer for a few more days and update you if there are bugs. thanks a lot!
My tablet was working perfectly on the JSS15J then JSS15Q came along and I found letters "sticking" while typing and the screen was unresponsive to touch while laying flat on a table. I flashed the ts-10-lock image and so far, so good. I have been typing for awhile now with no "sticking" letters, and while laying flat on a table. I have not encountered the unresponsive screen at all flat on its back or otherwise. I will continue running through scenarios that used to give me problems and report back if I encounter anything. Also, running Bulletproof kernel and no impact with kernel functions.

Can this really be only a software problem?
I am not really experiencing other touchscreen issues with my N7 except for some very rare stuck touches. This one I triggered by accident.

So this guy goes to the doctor's office and says my head hurts everytime I hit the wall. The doctor says, then stop hitting the wall.
Couldn't you just slide it over and don't use the tablet on top of the keyboard?
Have you considered the MacBook Pro might be emitting interference? Stray currents and voltages? It doesn't take much to throw these capacitative touchscreens off.
On this thread, most people have it much worse than you making the tablet very hard to use. We are trying to get these units back into a state that is at least usable.
Your case, while an interesting science project really isn't something someone would feel any sense of urgency to help address.

Yea I booted 10 first and it is great. I can't reproduce any of the bugs I've seen before using YAMMT.
Google Maps Pinch/Zoom is working flawlessly. I couldn't even zoom in before.
The OP says to "fastboot boot boot-ts10-lock.img". Should we eventually "fastboot flash boot-ts10-lock.img" to make it permanent?

How do you "lock" it in so that it won't get updated? Is it just a file in the filesystem, if so how do you prevent "fastboot erase" from getting rid of it? I've looked at ektf3k.c and know where I need to make a change so that it will replace any non-matching version, but I don't really know where the actual firmware is stored. It doesn't seem to be in the vendor part of the kernel tree or in the actual ektf3k.c or ektf3k.h files. Where is it kept? kept in fw_data.b
I'm new to Android, but I'm not new to Linux or reverse engineering so please be patient with me. Just looking for a technical description of how you did what you did. What exactly is in the .img files?
EDIT: I haven't booted any of them yet, but I'm guessing these are Linux kernel images with a modified version of the elan driver. Sorry for being stupid, I'm just trying to put this all together in my head and I can't cope with anything that seems like magic. Thanks for your time.
EDIT: Ok, I figured out where the firmware is stored. I also successfully built a ROM with my compiled kernel and flashed them to the tablet. No brick, it booted the second try and seems to work. Of course there's no apps on it hardly.
I'm kinda thinking out loud here, please correct anything that I get wrong:
I started off with the assumption that there was a closed source driver, but that seems to have been incorrect on my part. After looking at the code a little more, I see that ektf3k.c appears to be the lowest level driver, outside the embedded firmware. The driver does only update the firmware in the case that the flash is empty (FFFF.....) or the firmware presented is a higher version (just as you said of course). It appears that a simple change will make it flash any version presented that is different than the one currently flashed in. I plan to try this on my tablet and see if there are any unexpected repercussions from doing so.
I wish I had a datasheet for the controller (hint hint anyone).
DISCLAIMER: I know that you have already solved this problem in an arguably better way, I just want to tinker around a little. Thanks again. :good::good::good:

So if we do this can we lock the boot loader backup. If for some reason it doesn't work will I be able to take it back for exchange. After unlocking the boot loader. Do people leave the boot loader unlocked . Is the software staying the same meaning will I be ok downloading future updates.
Is there a way to find out what variance is installed right now on the device? I got JSS15Q and my tablet is useable but sometimes there are ghost touches or the touch is stuck or gets interrupted and the likes.

New here so sorry my first post is a question but I have an issue with no obvious (possible?) solution so any help is much appreciated.
Earlier today I went to use my nexus 4 and found myself unable to enter my pin to unlock the device. Various areas of the touchscreen have become mostly unresponsive, especially where the number 5 is which is not responding at all. I am totally at a loss as to how this has happened as the alarm on the phone woke me this morning and I was able to disable it without issue and it was working perfectly last night. It has not been dropped, had anything spilled on it etc. so this problem has no obvious cause.
I was able to restore a nandroid backup I had made last week with the Nexus Root Toolkit but this has made no difference, the touchscreen is almost totally unusable when I boot into the TWRP recovery.
My first question is, is it possible to use my pc (via some software or something) connected via usb cable to enter the pin to unlock my phone as without being able to unlock the device after it has booted its storage is not visible in windows explorer.
My second question is what can I do about the touchscreen if any of the few probably useless ideas I have (flashing stock etc.) don't fix the problem? Is it possible for this sort of hardware issue to be replaced?

PS Just wanna say a big thank you to many of the members of this forum for all the excellent work they do investigating and developing the many apps, tools and other things that have been produced, it's certainly made owning my nexus more enjoyable than it perhaps could have been.
Don't know how I managed to miss so many posts with roughly the same problem.
Anyway, definitely not a software issue which I think means I need to replace the digitizer, thankfully it's nowhere near as expensive as I expected.
I am asking this because I have my YP2 for 2 months now and it´s already the second time I have to send it in for repair...
The first issue was a clear hardware defect - I left it on the kitchen table around 4 weeks after my purchase with the e-ink on top, and when I returned later during the evening, the clock was ~90 minutes behind, did not move, and the device was not reacting to anything. I´ve tried the 10 seconds reboot thing on the on/off switch (a few days earlier I managed to get me into a software loop while fiddling with the stupid multi-user mode of Android 5... and the hotline guy gave me the idea for a reset with this 10 second thingy) and nothing happened... I had to send the device in.
10 days later it came back, "new mainboard" with a new IMEI, from the outside it was still the same (even my sticker was on).
Then a few days ago, only 2 weeks after the return, my camera did not switch on. Standard Android failure message. Then I realised that if I press the two screens a bit together _sometimes_ the camera comes back, from time to time with a dizzy, blurry picture, sometimes with a strange split screen (upper half of the picture down, lower half up) and sometimes just snow. And then again most of the time the Android failure message and no pic at all.
So the phone is going back to the service AGAIN... Seriously, I have never had any kinda bad luck like this with any other phone in my last 20 years before! Of course the whole setup/install procedure has to be done again (and since I am using the phone professionally, with that amount of files and apps and widgets that takes at least 3-4 hours - although I am starting to develop a sort of routine here... ) and so on.
In conclusion - because in some other topics some of you already mentioned RMA issues... - my question would be: How reliable is YP2 in your experience? Does it make sense to keep using mine, or should I sell it as quickly as, and with the smallest possible loss possible on ebay and return to more satisfactory models? I mean, I LOVE my secondary e-ink screen and things I can do with (and thanks to) it! This makes my decision even harder, since the other contestants with double screens have next to NO software support on their devices for a proper use of the e-ink, at least compared to Yota who really invested into that as well...
Sounds like you've been cleaning out Yota's monday models for everyone.
Personally, I've had mine for 6 months now and only run into some software related problems. Yota has said that they are working on bringing Android 5.1 for yotaphone 2. Hardware has been working flawlessly.
You should create a full backup of your phone before sending it in. Then when you get it back just restore it and you're up and running within minutes.
If you keep running into problems but appreciate the epd, you could sell your yp2, get some cheap replacement phone for 6-12 months and then buy yotaphone 3.

To create a full backup, you don't need to root, but you will need to unlock the bootloader. Basically you would first unlock the bootloader, then boot (not flash) into a custom recovery, create your backup, transfer it to your computer, and you would be done. The only thing that would have changed and detectable afterwards would be the unlocked bootloader. However, I don't think that they would turn down your hardware related RMA because of that. That is not a verified assumption though.
Edit: It would seem that some manufacturers might turn down the RMA for unlocked bootloader, and some might not. Yota has not made their stance clear on this.

Not sure if it's a right place to ask, but let it be my first post here. I own an S5 device, and it's sort of crazy. Let me explain.
Three months ago my device suddenly rebooted and got almost-soft-bricked in sense of being unable to boot to the operating mode normally: its display just got black after the splash screen, however I could tap the display and watch 1 FPS "live stream" using `adb screencap` at my PC. So the device was not dead and I could take out all private not synced data I needed (it was really hard once for an application that has the backup facility disabled in its application manifest) -- blind tapping everywhere. My first attempt to fix the device was re-flashing another compatible ROM having all important data backed up. Well, I got it bricked and could not boot anymore. The recovery mode was not available (the device just frozen if trying to enter the recovery), however I could enter the download mode.
Unfortunately, no reflashing helped, so I decided to let it be fixed by a repaire service (since an official Samsung service center in my country has rejected the repair request _with payment_ because the device was not intended for sale here -- well, "thanks Samsung"). Ok, the alternative service took the device and asked almost a half of the device price for the display replace. Honestly, I forgot to ask why there was an idea to replace the display if it worked perfect while it was waiting in the Download mode. Again, it just got black after the splash screen, but the display worked fine in the Download mode until the device was powered off or reset. So after a few days they gave it back to me, and the device was really good now -- it worked fine. They also re-fllashed the device to Android 6 (previously Android 5) and the device was unrooted. Well, that's fine to me.
But after a few hours of rooting, testing and re-installing the software and migrating the data back to the device, the device rebooted again being unable to boot to the "operating mode". Now it just got stuck at the Samsung S5 splash screen or rebooted in a loop. But after a long time (it might took more than a day; the battery seems to be inserted in the device and not pulled off) the device was able to boot normally and (this might be odd) upgrade the installed apps. If I remember, this was a cyan screen with two or three animated white gears. So about 150 apps were upgraded and the normal "operating" mode activated -- so I could use the device. Now after working a few hours, the device falls into a reboot loop / splash freeze coma again for undetermined time, and then, for unknown to me reason, the device woke up.
In short:
1) The device reboots or shuts down suddenly.
2) Instant rebooting does not work for whatever reason.
3) Just wait for some undetermined time without the device battery pulled off.
4) ... It boots again.
5) The upgrading process starts after the boot.
6) Working with the device until paragraph 1: "The device reboots or shuts down suddenly".
Now I don't know if it's a hardware or a software issue: the repair service guys didn't explain much, and now I'm feeling cheated for the replacement of the display that worked perfect in the Download mode that I gave half device price just because it was an idea of theirs. Yes, I have the repair warranty paper for their service, but I just would like to know the real context.
What I could be deservedly blamed for:
* I rooted the device after their repair in a wrong way.
* When I rooted the device, I removed most Samsung bloatware I used to remove earlier. I don't tend to think that I could kill some important software, though. But, to me, it's hard to believe that a software issue might cause such an odd device behavior (I mean the booting just after a certain period of time).
So... I would really and really appreciate getting the real issue behind the symptoms or just a hint spark of light to reveal possible root causes. And was I really cheated by the repair service?
* My device: Samsung SM-G900P S5, Sprint
* Firmware before the repair: stock, Android 5.0.x (?), root, most Samsung bloatware removed
* Firmware after the repair: stock, Android 6.0.1, root, most Samsung bloatware removed (yes, the bloatware list difference is significant now)
* The battery: seems to work fine and does not get drained when the device is in coma

someone said after an OTA to 6.0.1 it borked the phone into a reboot loop too. I had mine rooted for maybe a week or 2 and now I have reboot Loops, not even twrp can fix this issue. I am trying a battery like this person said here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/marshmallow-6-0-1-ota-update-boot-loop-t3425838,
spending 9 bux and change beats spending 250 for another Unlocked G900T

Hm, that's interesting, thank you. I also noticed that the loop happens after some time only, it's like the more you have your phone running in the normal mode, the more your phone can get into the loop again. However, I don't think it's a battery overheat issue or so (sorry, I may use silly terms not being an expert at all). So in short:
1) After some pretty long power-off time you power on the device. It's working really stable unless...
2) ... unless something happens (battery? some intricate software or hardware issue?) and the device gets rebooted.
3) Here comes the boot loop, and usually no reboot helps to get out of the reboot loop.
4) Just power off the device and let it just be alone for some time, and now you're back to the step 1 until the "unless..."
My coma device is powered off for long time (thus I think that the step 4 still works for me after that long time) and I'm going to give it to the repair service again, just comparing what the service guys say and what the forum folks say.
I will follow up on the battery swap when mine arrives.

I received a battery yesterday, charged it up and started using it today, no reboots or bootloops so far.
The battery that came in my phone was made in china, the one I just got yesterday was made in Vietnam.
I'm wondering if Samsung really needs to stop using china to make batteries lol, Surefire flashlights state not to use batteries made in china lol.

Hm, that's really interesting. It's hard to believe that replacing the old battery might affect it that much and get rid of bootloops -- I mean, I just thought that it might be a software/firmware failure (let's say I removed some system apps [actually Samsung bloatware] improperly), or something very core hardware might fail, but I have never thought of a batter as the root cause. Hard to say, sorry. But I'll take your solution into account. Thank you!

I thought it was a bad rom flash as well or SuperSU causing it, well I found another article stating they replaced the battery and the issue went away. I think the phone was stating a bad POST so it would restart
