Has anyone actually tried copying out the dialer/phone app from an international ROM and putting it into a US ROM? I did a quick search of the dev and general Tab forums and haven't seen a mention of it.
Is the limitation for not making calls in the modem or kernel, or is it just the lack of the software?

I *think* it is just the lack of software.
Interesting. I may have to look into this, compare an international ROM to the stock AT&T one.
Are either of you actually reading these forums?
The AT&T Tab has already been hacked to make calls.
The TMo Tab can be made to make calls, but you'll lose 3G.

It's been tried. So has just flashing the modem. Neither worked.
Yeah I've seen those posts, I was just just wanting to see if there was any way to do it without having to flash another ROM onto my Tab. I'm guessing it's pretty deeply ingrained into the framework or something.
(Mainly wanted to ask because my quick search did not pull up results of retrofitting Phone capability into a "crippled" US ROM)
I dont know if this has been pointed out before but in my tmo tab when using root explorer and I look in system/app all the phone apps are already installed. They are just being blocked, is there a way to modify them to work?

The dialer is there and I think it is installed but is disabled somehow. Trying to bring it up just displays a message on the screen saying the dialer application is not supported on this device. I would be very interested in just modifying this ROM to re-enable that feature so flashing the EURO ROM isn't necessary. I am sure someone will figure it out before me but I am looking into it too. I am just so scared of doing stuff with this thing because for some reason it feels like uncharted territory and I am afraid of unknown consequences. Once the dialer is working a simple IMEI and serial number change will remove any restrictions on T-Mobile's end.

Simple IMEI change? Do you have the instructions?
Isn't that illegal to change imei?

I got to thinking, maybe it's a service or something preventing it? (Either an option or argument passed to the services)

Do you have an SPT box? You need the hardware this isn't a pure software solution.
http://www.sptbox.com/Products/Default.aspx
And it isn't cheap so I haven't decided whether or not I want it that bad. But I have been reading their forums and this product can in fact change the IMEI and serial number. It has been tested as sucessful on just about every GSM model of the TAB there is.
I just realized this is all way off topic. The OP is talking about enabling the dialer software and not changing the IMEI. Lets continue this in another thread.
I have been wondering, after flashing custom roms, will i have a chance to lose my premium navigation licence which perhaps i purchased or entered the voucher code which i get from the box?
To those who used the voucher or purchased, did u lose the licence or it will sync back in the licence? Where is the licence stored btw, in ur phone or on server according to imei?
And also, for the premium navigation voucher code, is it lifetime or dated?
Thanks in advance to all replies
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I recently flashed my first custom rom, wiping everything before. Didn't sync anything back, still the premium navigation is working fine (30 days test license). On the first run it will pop up the usual activation screen, so I suspect the license is saved on a server and bound to your IMEI.
I was on my 2nd 30 day trial yesterday, before my first trial expired I flashed my phone back to stock with a RUU (1.32) and I got to activate premium navigation for another 30 days, however when i upgraded locations today it removed the 2nd license
The licence is bound to you IMEI. If you ever send your phone in to htc make sure you record your imei first. If they replace the handset they will need both the old and new imei to transfer the licence.

Not everyone gets one. Its a promotional code and comes as an extra from certain carriers and resellers. Kinda like some stores will throw in a free car charge and deals along those lines.

Damn, that’s disappointing. I just flashed Revolution HD and formatted SD card and when I synced my license it changed my Navigation License expiry again, probably the DRM ID on the key must have to match the phone or something like that is stopping it. maybe just copy the time and grace values in to your current key then sync? I'm just guessing...
EDIT:
I was comparing my old phone.dat with my new one and I noticed a couple of things that might help. the first was that they have since done a version upgrade of locations and I don't know if that fixed anything, the second was after i had entered in my random values to the key, when I synced the license it reset all of the values back in my phone.dat to default but I now have 2 keys instead of one
Here is my experience. In my case my DHD came with a voucher license for one free navigation. I activate it and an email was send to my email stating tht i have one "Perpetual license" of the country i choose to my phone IMEI.
Just recently, i 'root' my phone, format my mSD so that i can create EXT3 partition and flash a custom rom. I do a full wipe for the flash. I have to download again the maps tht i need but the moment i request for navigation, the program gave me 3 options, Buy, Voucher or Sync License. I choose Sync License, and i got back my navigation for my country.
so flash custom rom to ur heart desire.... HD
I find this rather strange. When I got my phone in November the phone part in premium navigation didn't work, after a reboot it worked and has ever since. The premium navigationhas worked almost daily ever since. I've not activated or put any codes / purchased any licences. Have I missed something or am I just lucky?
Cheers
AFAIK you can onli flash sense-based ROMs like android Revolution ROM though to enjoy the htc navigation.
aggghhh, spoke too soon, it went to 30day trial today, not bad i suppose ive been using it since begining of november.
i dont think i will purchase when it runs out - having no postcode search is the deal breaker tbh
I think premium navigation doesn't reserve any paid from me. Should wait for google navigation come to my country..

Hi, apologies for reviving this thread, but was looking to put on a custom ROM to my HTC Vision, and the topic of this thread is what is holding me off until now since I paid fifty euro for my permanent premium navigation
So after reading all the posts in this thread, can I safely assume that as long as I flash a ROM which also contains Sense, I will be able to keep my premium navigation?
Thanks for your time and help guys

I am about to sell a few things on Craigslist and to protect myself and personal information from potential creepers I am trying to find an app for my S4 that will give me a new telephone number that I can call and text with. That way, I can give this number to people on Craigslist without giving them my actual cell phone number.
I know Google Voice does this but I hear they are going to close that down soon? I would love to use them if they aren't. I have also heard of TextPlus Free and Line2. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I want a second telephone number I can give out, text and call with, and they would have no idea it isnt a real cell phone number. I know Line2 only works with other Line2 users, which I dont want. I need an app that can text any number in the US. Thank you for the feedback!
-Pinger - seems to be a good option, does anyone use it?

I followed the guide from the unified dev forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799050 and made the necessary changes to the smali files and recompiled everything back into the classes.dex as the guide states and then replaced the existing classes.dex with the modified one, but I'm still getting the location consent nag whenever I enable GPS. I'm running a TMO S5 rooted stock TW ROM. Anyone successfully been able to get that location consent to go away or have any ideas on why it might not be working as it should be with the modified classes.dex?
Thanks for any hints, advice or help in advance
It worked for me and I don't recall deviating from their edits.
I'm using a custom ROM, so possibly you took an OTA update that modified your apk. Impossible to say since you didn't state your build version or any other details. Still seems a stretch and I'd think that there would be more reports if the method wasn't working. More likely you had a typo or some such.
.
The only thing I did notice was that the line numbers didn't match up but I assumed it was due to updates to the apk. No OTA update since trying the modified one. I'm definitely going to go back through and make sure I didn't typo something which is certainly a possibility. I'm also feeling rather dumb for not having posted build info and more details, I know better than that. Good to know it does indeed work and almost certainly rests on something I've overlooked somehow.

Line numbers not lining up are not a problem per se. The edits needed to be in the correct spot /expression irrespective of the line number. And barring an accidental typo, I'm sure that you did that.
The potential problem with line numbers not lining up is the implication that the remaining code in the apk is somehow different. And a concern that might interfere somehow. If the code near the edits was identical to the tutorial, it's probably not an issue. But that is the potential concern.
.
I'm beginning to believe that there may be changes as you mentioned in other areas of the APK causing the issue. I ran a diff against the edits and the original files and they match that of the tutorial in terms of where they should be and the surrounding code matched the tutorial as well. I'm on the NF6 firmware at the moment but I may flash back to NE6 and extract the apk from that release and see if there have been changes that could account for this. Thanks for getting me thinking about it being possible changes in the surrounding code from updates causing it to fail.

I wanted to say thank you again fffft. It wasn't an issue with guide or the rebuilt apk. I ended up misunderstanding what the consent dialog was doing. I feel rather stupid now. Thanks again for the advice and ideas.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Glad that you got it sorted one way or the other.
.
It boiled down to me thinking that it disabled the notification when enabling/disabling the gps radio itself and after reading more on topic I understand now that the way consent notifications are handled without the change in place is any app that would request consent would cause the dialog to show up. As soon as I realized that I totally facepalmed myself for being an idiot

Yes. Even the nexus 5 on 5.1.1 is still vulnerable. Google has already distributed a patch to all carriers, but as far as I know, none of the carriers have actually released it. The only patched rom so far is the most recent cyanogenmod 12.1 nightlies

Hangouts uses a cloud based system to handle mms. Basically everything goes through Google Photos. The pictures and videos are the loaded to you phone once you click on them. As long as you dont click on a video or picture from someone you dont know, it would never reach your phone and thus not be an issue.

Do you have a link to a reference on that?
I ask this because the guys that originally found the exploit stated that depending on what SMS app you use, you may not even know you were infected, hangouts being one of those.
(Joshua) Drake found that when the exploit code was opened in Google Hangouts it would “trigger immediately before you even look at your phone… before you even get the notification”.

The above is true, but hangouts allows you to approve the messages which hold them in photos before they are delivered. You can also block all sms message that are not from contacts in hangouts.
See the screen shot below. The stock messaging app on many android phones does not have this option.
Also hangouts can be updated without a carrier approval so they will address it in the next update. The infamous hangouts 4.0.

I suppose the clarification I wanted to get out there is that this isnt some inherently present functionality without some forethought to change those settings. So hangouts like any other text app needs to be made secure enough to prevent the exploit if you are not running a patched build. Just making sure the people reading don't get a false sense of security simply because they are using Hangouts.

In all reality this is just a puff piece to try and make Apple who is losing market share look more secure and to get this Drake guys name in some press. The threat HAS NOT BEEN SEEN IN THE WILD, and its very likely Drake is the only one to ever produce it.
Its also very low class to unveil a zero day exploit that you know hasn't been patched and that no one else has found. Dude just wants the fame, in reality no one is at risk as long as it gets patched in the near future (months) . It's not even really about Google dropping the ball after the fact. Google has already released the patch, it just hasn't been implemented across the various OEMs. Just because it has yet to be exploited doesnt mean it shouldn't be brought to light. In fact the exploit was found in APRIL and the article I cited was posted June 27th. Also Google has its own team of software nerds that do this very thing. Find vulnerabilities in software and give the authors a window to respond before publishing it. Of course the last 0day exploited posted to google for windows 8.1 was published 90 days after its finding but the person who found it NEVER contacted Microsoft..
This is why I would be weary of trying to call this dude out as starved for attention when our beloved Google does the same thing his firm does.
I'm sorry but I am all for transparency when it comes to security issues no matter how big or small. Especially in this mobile world we live in.
And now more potential hackers have been made aware of this.
