Battery Degradation - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The G2 had been out for some time now... So I was wondering if anyone has started noticing any batter degradation. I havent noticed any myself, but ive only had my phone since December.

I had my g2 for bout 5 months heavy use as work phone with no change in battery man, pretty heavy use too

I get between 6.5-8hrs sot on KK, I'm usually in poor signal areas which kills the battery...
Transmitted via Geass

I never got all these fabulous SOT numbers, just about 4 hours and some change with mixed WiFi/data usage (either one of them activated). I've had the phone for 7 months now and I've seen no changes. I do occasionally get the feeling that I'm getting lower battery life, but it may be because of the very poor 3G network here.

I usually only get 3-4 hours sot time. But when im on my phone, 80% of the time im playing games.

Battery life on this phone?

I just got this phone, instantly updated to jellybean, still did a factory reset to help with little issues that happen sometimes on android updates ... and the battery life is terrible. Nothing at all like everyone is bragging about. I even made a lot of smart actions to try to help (i.e. put in airplane mode when I'm not using it, 4g off when wifi on, background data only when using phone, etc.).
I'm getting around 2h and 45 min of screen on time. And it still loses around 12-15% overnight with airplane mode on. No apps downloaded or settings synced from account.
Are there other things I could check?
Facebook freezing and FC constantly too.

I'd disable smart actions and also Google now. People report that helps a little

I also found it took about 3 weeks for the battery to settle down and really give good long life on each charge. Now I'm super impressed with battery life of this gem of a phone...
Hmm ... I'm debating on sending it back. How was your battery life in the beginning?
No one experiencing huge facebook issues? Some other apps seem to take awhile to load.
Thanks.
I have the official jelly bean and I'm a rooted. So far today has been the best battery life that I've had even since flashing from ICS last week.

Seeing you had 2-3 hrs on screen time, its no wonder the battery is dying on you. At first I found the battery life ok, would get through the day, but as I used it more the battery seemed to settle and now get 2 days a charge...BUT as with everything concerning battery this is relative.
I don't sync pretty much anything. I don't sync gmail, facebook, etc...which i know do take up substantial battery life. One thing I've found with this phone from using CPU Spy (app), is that when it goes into deep sleep, it really uses no battery power...I mean NONE! The other day at work it was just sitting on my desk doing nothing for 3 hours and went from 90% at 9am to 90% at 12 noon.
Battery is great on this phone...

I've had this phone for about a month now and my battery life is incredible. Better than I ever expected. I'm getting 2 full work days out of a single charge. I can suggest an app that I'm convinced works very well for Motorola's as this is the second one I've had. 2x battery saver seems to work better than juice defender. Cutting off background data when the phone is idle will help out a lot and that app does that very well. Smartactions should also be kept to a minimum. My phone uses virtually no battery when it is idle. If you play around on the internet a lot then its gonna drain your battery. For mostly talking and texting, its great.
Same problem but it does get resloved
When I got my razr m it had the same battery problem, but with time it will start holding more of a charge. It takes roughly month, and now i'm getting two days easily with it.
Yep. The battery here is unbelievable. I used ~1gb data, about an hour of calls and a few games for bout 30 min or so. Oh and some music. About 1.5 hours to charge and 2 days battery. Best battery life I have seen since the Nokia 1700 with net ten. Really. Its that good.
And I mean straight out the box. I bought it on Thursday last week and charged it maybe 3 times.
Charged it on Tue at 830 or so till bout 10 central standard time. I got 35% right now. I'm TRYING to kill it before I go to bed. I'm not very optimistic. Outstanding battery. Shoot, unheard of. 4.1.1
Oh and PS. I ain't rooted it yet either.

To speed the settling in process.
Use the phone unit it dies. And then Charge it fully with no interruptions. Dont unplug and replug.
I had 4 of these going through my place now.
My girls, Mines and 2 from friends.
My girl's was settled in well when we received it already.
Mines took 1 week to settle in. My 2 friends took 1 weeks with that Calibration process and the other took 4 weeks of normal usage.
The phones battery is a monster !!!
2 hours worth of phone calls Screen is on time 3 hours, 16h wifi, I am at 40% and been off the charger for 17 hours.
The battery on this thing is great! One thing Motorola does better than any other manufacturer. I'm getting all weekend off a charge as my phone pretty much runs off wireless

The i is more efficient when using it acctionally by 5%
Heavy usage the M is by 3% better, at conserving battery but the i is faster on heavy usage on large application
I have to get the screen shots we got few weeks ago.
Also the i tends to suck more power on some apps due to the emulation. But is not slower in anyway.
They are marginally almost the same.
Its just where u need the Processing power to be.
Heavy need of processing power the i is very competitive on single 3D apps
Need 100% compatibility with the apps store use the M with its ARM CPU
1.5 ARM Dual core or 2.0 Hyper Thread Single Core
I'm getting AMAZING battery life on my RAZR M. I get through the entire work day (lots of voice calls, wifi usage, bluetooth, maybe 1.5 hrs of screen time total) and still have about 35% remaining before I go to bed (about 15 hrs of usage). I even try to kill the battery by watching videos at home, putting the screen brightness on 100%, still havent managed to kill the battery.
So far very impressed with this phone, especially compared with my old Galaxy SII on TMobile

I think you got a borked phone, ive had this phone for 3 days now, noticed the amazing battery life the first day, phone came with a 50% charge, didnt charge it all day, finished day 1 with 30% after heavy use, day 2 heavy use navigation, texting, games, ect, finished day again at 30%, now day three same heavy use as day 2, days almost over and im at 50%, think i got a good one well deserving of the trident case i bought for it.

Nexus 4 Battery Life

Hey Guys,
A bunch of people are complaining about the battery life on Nexus 4. I've been waited for a couple days since I got the device, to have enough confident about the battery before I make any post here. Yes, the phone battery drain pretty fast on the first few cycles. After a bunch more charges later, let me tell this, the battery life did get significantly better. It lasted about 10-15 hr depends on the load of the usage.
Here is my typical day, off the charge at 100% in the morning, listen to a few songs, checking emails, and messages while getting ready for school. About an 30mn to 1hr of internet browser and youtube videos while on the bus. By 1-2pm the battery drop the about 70-80%. I put the phone in silent mood til i'm done with all my classes. On the way back home on the bus, I listened to a bunch of music, web browsing, maybe a few phone calls, texts or games.
Compare to my old phone, Samsung Galaxy S2 T989, im impressed with the Nexus 4 battery life. My Galaxy S2 battery always die on the bus coming back home. What I'm trying to get at: if you're a light to medium user like me, then get this phone. I was hesitate at first because I always have bad experience with android battery life. But Google seem to get its OS right with this nexus device, mainly because the battery drain minimum while in sleeping mood.
Can you post your Nexus 4 battery performance screenshot if you have been using the phone for more than a few days ?
Is there supposed to be a question being asked? Or a statement as this is in the Q&A forum.
I agree with you on many points. People need to wait at least 5 to 7 days for the battery charge to fully kick in. The first days mean absolutely nothing as it is still being aligned plus the user is still installing apps and setting up their phone.
There are some notable problems in the default kernel that uses more battery Usage than normal too.

From full battery to this overnight + breakfast usage. Rasbean + Matr1x v3.0. Never seen anything like it. Coming from the GN, this phone is a different dimension altogether. On any aspect..
Had phone for 5 days. Drained phone to 10% then fully charged. Moderate to light use made it through a day.
Stock rooted + Franco Kernel.

Depends on how much screen time you got, which you didn't show us.
The trick is to be careful about using mobile data when signal is bad, I switch to WiFi when home to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

What is this obsession for battery life, it lasts me well through the day with moderate/heavy use. I charge it at night (if needed) and unless you are homeleless this shouldn`t be a problem. It`s a great phone and i enjoy using it.

I thought the same until my N4 actually arrived, it seems battery life is abysmal compared to my Optimus 2x which didnt have anything really spectacular in regards to battery size. On my O2x I could get 1.5 - 2.5 days depending on use, hitting atleast 1 .5 which was good and acceptable for me (I can charge at night anyways) however my N4 doesnt even reach 13 hours on similar usage!.
I am quite a light users of smartphones however I do like to have a power phone when it comes to using it on the basis of smoothness and capabilities if I need to say do work on my phone, I rarely play games though. Main usage is 2 email accounts on poll 1 hour steps, a third account that is an exchange server and polls in 30 minute steps and thats about it with some brief browsing and a handful of texts (been a quite time since I got my N4), this is less usage than my O2x and yet it still performs alot worse!
I was hoping of staying with stock as I was expecting it to finally be good, comparing it to LG stock attempts it is but battery life isnt . I will be trying the combo Vangelis13 mentioned, raspbean and matr1x kernel as that seems like a great mix however Parandroid has been on the table and it seems like alot of being are getting good results so I will try it soon .
If I can get more than a day of usage I would be really happy, if I was playing games or doing really heavy tasks I wouldnt expect it to last but right now it is doing pretty much nothing and dieing far to fast!.
One thing I've noticed since coming to N4 from S2 is that phone calls drain battery much more significantly on the N4. I could make an hour long call on my S2 and it would use no more than a couple of percent battery but the N4 used 15% for an hour long phone call the other night.
If I didn't own a nexus 4 and came to this thread to find out about it's battery life I would expect it to be good.
Point is you guys are misinforming everyone. The battery is mediocre and that's it.
It won't last a full day if you use it constantly and I do need two charges / day many times.
Let me put it this way, you will only get roughly 3 hours of screen time on stock everything. If that is good for you then it's will have good battery life, if not then you will say it's got poor battery life.

you are perfectly right.
I come from an iPhone 4s, which I changed because the battery life wasn´t that great and I thought it was time to try something new.
Got the N4 last friday and played around with it during the weekend.
Monday, tuesday and wednesday this week... none of these days I´ve been able to come back home with the phone still on.
I wake up at 7.30am and I usually am back home at 6pm.
In my opinion, and honestly should be in everyone´s opinion, 10 hours of battery life are unacceptable, whatever the usage is (considering that 7.30 of those 10 hours I was at work)
I have till friday this week to return it, which is a pity because the phone is great
i get 5-6 hours sot..
rom is omnirom 5.1.1 hellscore kernel b73.
100mv undervoltage hellsactive governer.
think 7 would be possible if google services would not take a quarter of the battery.
the screen is not taking that much battery as one would think.
think most issues with battery life come from fake original battery replacements.
had 3-4 sot using "original" battery. but after replacing with real genuine from official lg spare parts shop 5-6...

[Q] What am I doing wrong? (N4 Battery Life)

I've had this phone for around week (off craigslist so it's been broken in) and I can't seem to get any sort of good battery life from this device. I mean yeah it's ok, max I've gotten is 2.5 hours sot with 10-12 hr standby.
This screen is from today so far. I'm already down to 40% and not even at 2 hrs sot yet. What's going on? I've tried Franco's kernel, fauxs kernel, and now I'm on matr1x kernel. (all with undervolting) I've tried carbon, stock, and now I'm on rasenjb.
I don't think I'll ever get to these 5 and 6 hour sot times with a day and a half of standby everyone is getting.. I bought this device because of how good the battery life I saw everyone was getting and it's been a big disappointment so far. I've tried almost everything and that's why I made this thread. Does anyone have any suggestions?
That's because everyone liked to install custom kernels, underclock, never use their phone like a normal phone and then claim 5 hours SOT which is total BS.
Expect 10-12 hours with 3 hours SOT, that's normal. I've gotten way better than that but only when connected to Wifi and almost no actual phone calls. Anytime you're on the cellular network expect 10-12 hours tops

I've seen a lot of screen shots with 4hrs + though. I guess it's only achievable on WiFi. I'm on HSPA+ for 8 hours of the day and then I come home and there's WiFi. So I'm guessing data is draining my battery throughout the day like a hog. Maybe I'll try out that screen off 2G mod that I saw. Thanks for your input!

6 hours+ sot easy....
google now off
low brightness
nfc etc off (go through all settings and turn all unecessary crap off)
double check settings/google/accountname.gmail .. make sure music sync is off/unticked
use wifi only or 2g if you must (set 2g only anyway even when on wifi, stops the phone switching towers all the time)
use custom kernel and undervolt (optional) ..most come standard with a bit of undevolt already
don't have lots of apps syncing all the time.. facebook ect
use aosp browser or similar and not chrome
don't use live wallpapers
don't play heavy games , use mostly for messaging and browsing

Don't be hating because you are in a poor signal area. I get 6hrs sot on wifi and at least 4hrs on hspa+. If you are in an area that is a weaker signal, like 3g and edge with only one bar, sot will be less. I am stock rooted, including kernel. If a person doesn't use the phone the battery will last a long time, but the sot will also be low. For example, 24hrs of battery life with only one hour of sot pretty much means the phone was just laying there and barely used. On the other hand, 10hrs of battery life with 5hrs of screen time means the phone was used much and faired good. Apart from sot, cell signal is the biggest battery drainer. When I go to my sis-in-laws, which is a very weak area, my battery steadily drains with my phone just in my pocket. *edit* I should also note, when at home on wifi, I'm also on my Microcell, so I always have a strong signal.

I usually get between 2.5 and 3.5 hours screen on time. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. You can use better battery stats to diagnose and try to kill unnecessary wakelocks. And yes you can under clock and sacrifice functionality, but rest assured 5-6 hours sot is not typical, even if some people can achieve it on a regular basis.

Are you referring to me? Lying about what? You don't think I can get 6hrs sot on wifi and my microcell. You don't think I can get 4hrs sot on mobile data cellular signal? Those figures are fairly common and I have posted screen shots before. Or maybe you don't believe that a poor signal will drain battery more? Signal
Yeah! Its true. Poor signal make your phone drain more battery.
If in your carrier the 2G signal is better than 3G. Set the phone to use only 2G network. (GSM)
Put this in the phone app: *#*#4636#*#* and see the difference.

You're not talking about real world usage. Nobody uses their phone like that. It's people like you that come into threads where regular users with genuine concerns and questions get ridiculed by some guy who has his "phone" set up like some friggin science project talking about 5-6 hours SOT.
Google Search: Nexus 4 poor battery life
About 12,600,000 results (0.19 seconds)
Google Search: Galaxy S3 poor battery life
About 6,310,000 results(0.24 seconds)
^that's half of the results and the S3 has been out way longer with millions more users/owners
Obviously the Nexus 4 has a sub-par battery for today's standards. Case closed.
I answered his question with real life facts, and you're in here spinning fairy tales feeding a delusion that he can go about using his phone like a normal person and get 5-6 hours SOT.
So yeah, you're lying IMO.
Having a poor signal doesn't cut SOT by 4 hours.
Yes, I forget, I'm not using my phone in the real world when I'm working on my science project. Lol. Sorry buddy, but I did unlock my bootloader and root in order to transfer app data from my previous phone, but I am running the stock rom, even odexed version, and stock kernel. I have syncing, nfc, wifi, and gps always enabled. The only thing I don't keep on is Google Now because I don't use it. If you bothered to look closely at the screen shots, you would see the constant strong signal due to my Microcell. When on a weaker cellular signal, it cuts into my sot. I use a Microcell because without it, I get a really crummy signal, so I know firsthand what battery drain is like. And as I stated, on cellular only, I get 4-5hrs screen time, worse if I'm in a really poor location. Idk where you get this 4hr difference from.

I uninstalled facebook. Also Google maps, Google search and most of the other common battery drainers are on greenify. I've come to the conclusion that my mobile data radio is the biggest drainer. Would upgrading my radio offer a more efficient battery life? (I've never upgraded a radio on any of my devices before)

Would upgrading my radio offer a more efficient battery life? (I've never upgraded a radio on any of my devices before)

It probably is low signal strength killing your battery, I should have thrown in the fact that 90% of the time I have full signal. Flashing a radio is no biggie, just dont be stupid about it and kill power halfway through the flash. No need to wipe anything either. I think i saw some recovery flashable ones around here, but i like to use fastboot whenever possible. .48 is the latest official radio, with .54 coming from an international white n4. I'm on .48 and holding off until .54 becomes official before deciding to test it out, since .48 is golden for me. Test all of them, older doesnt mean worse and some people have better luck with the older radios.
It may not be relevant to your experience, but I was disappointed initially in N4's battery life too. Even after dialing down most automatic syncing, being very conservative with screen brightness, and other standard measures.
I installed wake lock detector. In my case, Dropbox was at the top of the list, with an inordinate # of system wake ups.
Turned out a copy of Dropbox on another machine on the same network was, with the 'LAN Sync' option enabled by default, sending out gobs of wake-on-lan packets and was waking up the N4 very often; something that would happen even without Dropbox on the N4, presumably.
Disabling Dropbox's LAN sync seemed to bump my battery life ~20-30%.
Google told me 10 - 12 hours continuous useage. I haven't had anything like that from mine.

Thanks for the info! How do I check which radio version I have?

Why are you fairies arguing?
I got my n4 yesterday and battery seems decent. I was listening to spotify while driving and spent about 1.5 hours in the gym listening to it as well. Also throughout the day was messaging, Facebook, twitter etc. Not heavily, but every once in a while. I'm satisfied.

First of all do cash reset/factory reset and then check your battery life. Probably your phone overloaded with old garbage/soft etc...
Not really possible for battery to be degraded after 6months of usage, unless you charged from 0-100 3-4 times a day lol

i dont think the battery did degarded... but i just dont get how people said they can havae like 6 hours of sot... so just wanna do a change before the warranty goes out.
i dont even use 25% of my 6p per day since I use my nexus 5 indoor and 6p outdoor.
btw, do u know the charge cycle for the 6p? and how was the quality of huawei battery?
Got my phone in November and charge it once a day since.
Stock not rooted.
Noticed recently phone battery has been winding down much quicker than prior.
Say within last 2 weeks.
Anything unusual happen out there in update land?

Are you frequently in areas with bad cellular signal? That will make the radio transmit at maximum power all the time, draining your battery.

No - not really.
Not Band 12 on most days - Band 4 for LTE data.
The only difference is I setup for the first time a Tasker profile to turn on Waze when I plug into the my car & it activates the Bluetooth and then Waze.
I make it a habit to turn off the High Accuracy GPS manually after disconnection.
It's my first Tasker activity ever so not sure if it's doing something in the background I am unaware of.
One thing I noticed that made a big difference, is to clear cash after every update, I don't use phone much, but I can average 5+ SOT hours, per cycle, never went below 20%. Some times my phone goes for 3 days with 2 or so SOT before it reach the 20%.

Battery drainers:
Brightness (outside)
Heat (outside/brightness)
Usage pattern
Signal coverage
Bad update
Play store
Erroneous apps
Battery life obsession (personal one of mine)
Bad battery (build quality)
These are all factors that can cause quick draining of the battery.

Just popped in a new Cameron sino battery from eBay. 25.00. Wasn't bad camera glass is tedious but not impossible. You can always get another one and pop it in if you do break it. No more shut offs. And yes the batteries in these phones are bad but I was still able to use it, just couldn't let it get below about 25% or it's possible that it would just shut right down. But now that is over with for 25.00. these are still very good phones if you are willing to do a little work.

Battery Life on Pixel 2XL

Has anyone been getting battery life like this on the Pixel 2XL? After an hour or so of screen on time I'll already be at 80%. I think I noticed it in December. I've been getting 3.5 or 4 hours of screen on time whereas I used to get 6 or 7.
I would say, losing 10% battery for 30min screen on time is quite normal. At this rate you would get 5hrs of SOT.
Judging battery life based on SOT only is quite wrong too. What you were doing on that screen matters. Gaming will be very different from netflix. It also depends on your network signal strength, whether you were on wifi or mobile data, what other background stuffs were running....
You could run accubattery for a week or so and see if your battery is degrading. It also does a pretty good job tracking what apps are using the most battery
Do you use it at maximum brightness?
My first 10% constantly give me about 50-55 minutes
Have you changed usage habits in any way? (more gaming or anything else that maxes out CPU)
Are you in a cell network fringe area and barely get signal? If your phone is struggling to maintain signal, that will drain battery fast.
Do you have a lot of apps using battery/data in the background?
Have you tried a factory reset?
I have not noticed any degradation in battery life since December. I still get at least 6 hours SOT between recharges. When I am using the phone, it typically loses ~10% per hour. When phone is asleep, it drains less than 1% per hour.
I notice me too a drop of battery life since December Patch.
10% give me 1h10 min of video (in wifi) Now it's more 40min, 50min.
And data suck my battery like nothing, it's like snow under sun.

I don't use my phone for gaming at all. I do live in an area now where I don't get great service, but I'm on wifi like 90% of the time. I do keep apps open all the time. I haven't changed how I use this phone at all. I used to get almost 9 hours of screen on time with many apps still open in the background, but I now I don't. I'm starting to think I need a new battery.

I think it's my battery. A couple of months of ago my phone would cut off when I tried taking a picture with Snapchat when my battery was below 30% or so. I looked it up and it's sort of common. Someone said a battery replacement was needed.

Same here. Never had a huge drop in percentage after a restart like you described.
