PC USB Connection issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
Recently I've been having problems with the USB connection.
I was on the stock rooted ROM, and I plugged in the phone and it came up with a message USB device not recognised because it malfunctioned. Tried different ports, cables and different computers, same thing.
Then I changed this morning to the Nexus 5 experience ROM. It worked initially. Now the problem has come back. However occasionally it does work and the windows explorer window pops up, but then after a second or two it goes away and the error message reappears.
What could be causing this?
It was fine a while ago.
Also, when it doesnt work, the battery settings thinks its charging on AC and not USB.

Sounds like it's a hardware issue

Hmm, its likely but could a hardware issue suddenly present itself with no apparent cause?

Absolutely, it worked for a little while and then didn't. Try flashing the factory image and see if it's still there. I don't think it's a software issue

OK I will try that.
The only new thing I've been using with it is a new car charger. It works perfectly fine, but if it was giving slightly too much or too little voltage could it have caused this?

I doubt it. There's built in circuitry that would take care of voltage or current fluctuations

Just a quick update. I smashed the screen a few weeks ago so I had to replace it. When I finished replacing the screen this also started working lol dunno what happened there.

Keyboard while charging via laptop

Ive noticed that when i have my phone charging via usb port on my laptop that random keys start getting pushed. Il try texting or anything that uses the keyboard and the keyboard freaks out.
Anyone else notice this?

I have not seen this. What rom are you using?

Somewhat unreponsive when connected to any usb
I have a problem whenever connected to any usb. I cannot unlock the phone. I do not get a response to certain presses. I cannot write a text (random letters are pressed). I use my NS as an alarm clock. I have to set the alarm and put the phone in clock mode before Docking (whereas it becomes unresponsive after connected). I have gotten the same results using USB from a computer, charger, and car charger and have always gotten the same results since having the original 2.3.1 to 2.3.3.

Have you done a factory reset of the phone ever?
Sent from my MattedBlues CM7 Nexus S from the XDA Premium app.
To be honest no, I haven't. Worth a try.
My phone is completely stock. I tried doing a reset sometime ago and it didnt fix it. I actually had the same problem on my OG Droid. No idea what the problem is

I had a similar problem using one of those chinese USB wall chargers. Maybe is something to do with the port voltage?
Yea maybe thats what it is. It is some cheap Chinese made usb wire i bought off amazon. Il try branded one, hopefully it will work properly

After weeks of trying to work out why my browsing experience was awful using mobile Internet I finally found something that really works for me.
Drum roll........ Turn my device upside down
Basically don't touch the end with the USB port and my data lock ups basically disappear.
Anyone else's phone the same? Probably not.

[SOLVED] USB connection not working (just charges, no mtp/adb/fastboot)

Hi,
The usb connection of my Nexus 4 suddenly stopped working.
On my pc, or even on different ones, device is not recognized: when plugged in the built-in usb ports the device does not even appear on windows device manager, while on a powered hub (the one inside my lcd display) it appears as an "Unknown device".
The hardware id itself is shown as "USB/UNKNOWN", in this case.
This happens both when the Nexus is in normal mode, or in recovery mode.
In Fastboot mode the phone does not show at all in device list, wherever I plug it in.
I tried to remove /reinstall all the drivers, rebooting both pc and phone, using different cables.
The phone, btw, charges correctly, even when plugged in the built-in ports and works perfectly
I'm on stock 4.2.2 unlocked, rooted + franco kernel M3.
I tried to revert to stock firmware, stock kernel, tried to do a factory reset, with no success.
What can I try more before a RMA?
EDIT: I solved it!!!
This is what I have done, so far: Downloaded 4.3 odexed/rooted update zip from development section, radio and bootloader (link), and applied the update via twrp.
Rebooted, the update was successful, but usb was still no-go.
Rebooted a couple of time after restoring apps using Titanium, still no usb.
So I just switched off my phone, connected to the charger (not the original one, a normal, bulk, 2€ usb charger), and left the phone there for 10 minutes or so.
Then I switched it on, unplugged from charger, plugged to usb and BANG usb and adb are now working.
It looks to me like some setting of the usb status (maybe fast charge???) where messing up the connection.
I tested the phone with every single port on my pc, and now it just works.
Still, I did not update the bootloader, I believe I'll do this later, but it should have no side effect at all.
What cable are you using and have you tried changing MTP to PTP in the Computer USB Settings on the Storage settings in the Settings on your device?
If that does not help then you will have to try an other USB cable.

I tried 3 different cables (Samsung, bulk and Nokia), and switched from MTP to PTP several times.

Nothing. It worked until Friday, I believe.
Then I decided to switch to 4.3, downloaded the update zip from xda to my pc, and when I connected the Nexus in order to put the zip on its storage, it wasn't working anymore.
No hits, no bumps, nothing.
from what you said it seems that you have tried everything possible pc-side, except trying the same things on another os (you should if you have a secondary system)
IMO, something is broken in the phone's usb port, maybe the data pin is screwed up and it wont let your pc recognize the phone, but i'm no expert with circuits

That's what I suspected too, I just was trying to check everything to be sure the problem is hardware related

Yeah, it could be possible that the device triggered Fast Charge but the kernel does not support it which could be causing the issue.

[Q] Slimport no longer working after 4.3

Nexus 4 8GB.
Slimport used to work fine.
Stopped working after update to 4.3 (stock) and rooting. No roms installed, only rooted.
When I connect the slimport dongle, it is not detected by the phone, that continues to send audio through the phone speaker, instead of sending it to the hdmi. The TV doesn't detect anything connected either.
Tested the cables with another device and they're still good, what changed is the phone.
Ideas?
Slimport still works here with improvements such has auto rotate is now supported and it is much smoother, the only issue is on YouTube when you watch a video there will be a blue block graphical glitch.
It is strange, did you try rebooting?

I tried rebooting several times. I'm thinking about unrooting to see if that will fix it.

Ok, if that fails then try wiping the dalvik cache.
If that also fails then a reflash is the last option for now until you reach the point that it fails as well.

What option is it under? I have had a look and can't find anything. Thanks
Are you guys on stock 4.3?
Because, when i'm using slimport with my n4 with hdmi on my tft and disconnect it after using it, my n4 will freeze after several minutes after. Mainly when the n4 is going to sleep.

Anyone else experiencing touchscreen issues while charging?

The strangest thing just happened to me. While I was charging my OPT it failed to register my fingerprint. Upon asking me for my pin, the touchscreen acted very erratic, and after 5 seconds stopped working completely. The moment I disconnect the charge cable everything works fine!
If my calc or any other app is open it also registers a lot of touches without touching the screen. It's nothing you can replicate. Kinda spooky actually lol.
I've tried a couple of things already, rebooted, killed most apps, checked the charge cable (original) and port but to no avail.
I have the US version and am on the latest stock ota, but rooted. I'm about to do a restore and after that clean install if necessary. I just wanna check if anyone experienced this before.
I will lost back if I get to the bottom of this. Hopefully it's not the hardware.

Does not happen so often on my OP2 but it happened a lot on my Nexus 4. This is a known issue with many devices but nothing you should worry about.

Thats not great news burnoutslo! It's pretty annoying that you can't use your phone while charging. I've noticed that once it reaches 100% everything's ok again so it definitely seems software related, probably android if other devices have the same problems. I will do a nand restore back to the previous oxygen version over the weekend. Hopefully it solves my problems.

I observed same thing yesterday,
The whole scenario was-
Yesterday when my battery gone below 15% i ran for the charger and plugged in and after that i started using phone and i noticed that my touchscreen becomes less responsive.
Difficulty in swiping between home screen, opening of apps during swiping.
So the solution i found that if i stand on the ground barefooted then only i am having this problem, when i put slippers on then its perfectly fine.
So may be it is some kind of grounding issue.
same here; issues sometimes when charging; I didn't see the differences between sleeper and barefoot but I also think it's a ground problem...

I had once this issue on cm12.1 oneplus 2 . What I did to solve this problem successfully.
1. I removed case from my phone . This causes grounding issues sometimes.
2. Reflashed OxygenOS.
3. Then I flashed cm on top of it. Wiped data, cache, dalvik only. didn't wiped system partition.
4. That's it. I'm. I'm typing right now while charging. Totally perfect.
I noticed it more with my cheaper USB C cables.
I bought a half dozen and some are better than others.
the boxed cable that was stock is the best by far.
Yesterday i aux in my phone to a audio player and observed the same problem again with touchscreen. Feeling very annoyed because of this and other bugs.
My phone used to lock up completely for up to 30 seconds after plugging in the charger. After move to cyanogenmod 13 this does not happen anymore, so obviously a bug in OxygenOS.

Hmm, this is generally not a problem with your phone or your software, but relates to the power supply. Noise in the power or grounding issues specifically cause the 'ghost touches' and erratic behaviour you describe. If you are lucky, your charger and cable are also fine and the issue is with the power socket, in which case you need an electrician to come and take a look. If its the charger/cable, then simply get a new one and you are good to go.
To figure out where the issue is, start by using the same charger + cable in a different location (completely different physical location). If the problem persists, then try changing the cable in that same location. If it still persists, try a different charger.
If the problem is NOT there at the alternate location, then chances are its your wiring and you need an electrician to sort this out for you.
