I have a pretty serious issue. I was trying to upgrade to the latest version of Hyperdrive, and somehow using SafeStrap 3.71 I emptied my stock OS slot (System partition size is 0, and it says no OS installed when I try to reboot). Obviously, I had put all my backup files and the new ROM on my external drive. In the midst of trying to restore my stock ROM, I tried the "Wipe" Format Data option just to get back to a fresh start. It says all "internal storage" will be formatted. I had no idea this included my EXTSD! Now I can't install the custom ROM that was on it, can't get back to factory ("no os installed"), and I've lost every bit of data, pictures, business files etc.
Any help here? I'm pretty intelligent but this is over my head. I've got to restore that data on that SD card if nothing else.

I've done a bit of searching for my answer, however, am not able to find the answer.
I am having a problem running a restore in AD Recovery in the Magldr (v1.13).
Let me explain the situation:
I wasn't able to get App2SDPro to carry over apps to my SD card. I was informed it was because it was that I did not have an EXT2 or EXT3 partition on my SD.
I did that and then my SD was erased, but luckily I make regular backups of my SD card.
So I put all the information back on my SD card. I then realized that my ROM was erased as well.
So I tried running the backup I made from the recovery and got the error mentioned in the title.
I then tried to reload a ROM that I have on my SD at all times and then tried to do an advanced restore of the data and system and cache while leaving the boot but nothing works..
Am I destined to start from scratch, lol? (I had 140 apps installed)(and I'll be using a different form of backup next time, lol)
i have the same problem . while i was recovering from nand backup i have this notification 'Nand Kernel Open Failed'
Just flash again the kernel of your rom or the rom without wipe
you have to flash your rom om the kernel again and hopefully the problem will be solved

i THINK i know what i did wrong:
i flashed firmware that i found from another site (not filefactory) with mobile odin. i had done a few backups, but did a fresh one anyway from cwm, and moved it to the "external" sd card. i unchecked everroot--i dunno why, i was going to root with the zip file... this may have been my mistake. but i also checked, "factory reset/wipe data/wipe cache etc" from within odin. THIS may have been my mistake... well, when it rebooted, mobile odin went to it, said everything went fine, then rebooted. now i'm stuck on the gTab start-up screen. it doesn't load the boot animation even. i can get into download mode, and i can get into recovery. tried flashing a rom and a kernel on top of whatever is on the device. that didn't work. mobile odin DID take away root. so i rerooted it thinking that cwm may require root to work.
the problem from within cwm is that it isn't seeing the "internal" sd card, or it thinks the external is the internal... that's how i was able to root again, by applying zip from sd card. it worked. so it IS still seeing internal storage.
this may have already been fixed had i not LOST the USB cable.... another one is on order and en route. i can see no solutions with it as is, i'm going to need desktop odin to reflash...
so the problem as i see it: i can't just restore because i erased the "internal" sd card. i moved my cwm folder to the "external" so even though it's on there, and cwm is reading my "external" as "internal" it's still unable to access the cwm folder with my backups available.
so the solution still requires the usb cable, even if i were to just move the cwm folder BACK to the internal card once i get it plugged in. in the mean time i'm dead in the water...

Ive been flashing for a while now. Just recent my phone got stuck on the "Galaxy S4" screen amd I had to restart like 15 times and reflash a few times before it booted into the rom. Now I see that I only have 3.5GB of internal space left. Even off od a fresh flash with a complete format. I even fomatted all data in TWRP amd all that. How do I get my space back?
Do I use odin and check off the repartition tab?

Do not mess with odin and check repartition. This will do nothing but brick your phone. If any thing, use your custom recovery and format storage, but be prepared to lose everything. First find out what's taking up all the space.

I've heard of problems after formatting /data in twrp on this device. You may consider flashing back to stock and starting over
Keep in mind that the total internal storage available includes your /data partition as well as your internal SDCard (/data/media/). TWRP will not format your internal SDCard unless you explicitly tell it to. Check out the stuff on your SDCard and see if it's eating up space (like a nandroid backup for example that can take up over 2.5gb of space!)
If still unresolved, I would do these steps:
- Backup your internal SDCard to your computer, and otherwise backup everything (nandroid, data backup, what-have-you) to your computer
- Do a simple wipe-data with TWRP
- Use Odin to return to MDL stock (or Canadian equivalent)
- Use stock recovery to wipe your data (this should also wipe SDCard)
- Root with motochopper, install custom recovery, install rom, etc.
To avoid accidentally downloading any OTA updates, I would recommend simply removing your SIM card during all this

I am about to give my AT&T Samsung GS4 a new beginning. I have had issues with my current stock ROM and restoring to a previous recovery is giving me issues. I am ready for a new start. The device is rooted, and I have TWRP 2.6.3.0 installed. I don't mind switching to CWM (Jeboo v1.1 is already on my flash list). I am leaning toward Graviton 1.4 ROM. Maybe Goldeneye.
I have just over 2 GB free on my internal storage, which I see getting used up pretty quick with photos of kids and other stuff. I have looked into a few folders, not knowing if they are important. I would like a fresh start with a new ROM and a clean internal storage. I'm even starting anew with a new empty SD card.
What can I do to clean out this internal storage and still keep TWRP (or CWM) recovery intact so I can install a new ROM? My goal is to have a fresh start on a new ROM with no junk files in the internal. Will wiping the internal storage from recovery wipe out my recovery?
In the interest of avoiding catastrophic meltdown and loss of everything, I have indeed made a copy of my internal drive, the sd card, and a few Nandroid backkups, which are all stored on a flash and/or PC.

What is the purpose of resetting the flash counter? As far as I know my bootloader is still locked.
Returning to stock? Wont i ose root and recovery? Wont I risk ending up with MF3 instead of the MDL that can be rooted?

If you've got everything backed up, a nandroid, the new ROM, a custom kernel (if you so desire) and the loki-doki zip (if not flashing a loki'd ROM or kernel) all on your micro SD card, then you're ready to begin.
In recovery, wipe everything except the external sd card. I've heard of users having problems after wiping/formatting data in twrp. May want to look into that. I think some users reverted to an older version of TWRP to avoid that. I use cwm. Check out the I337 guide in my signature. It details everything to wipe for a clean slate (system, data, etc).

You have the answers already, but I will advice one thing, do not do any twrp over version 2.5.0.2, or you will for sure be starting over again at some point. Those versions have issues.

TWRP 2.6.0.0 is why we are having this conversation...
I have TWRP on my Asus TF700 tablet...not sure which version. Perhaps I need to get CWM on that device also.
Now I'm thinking the SD card that I was using at the time was the problem. I have not been able to write any files to that card using a PC. I have found another card from a different manufacturer. I have clockworkmod installed. My sd card contains recovery files and a new ROM.
I think all I need to do now is go into recovery, wipe everything including internal storage but not the external SD. Flash the new rom and kernel then reboot.
I believe this is all I need to do. Sound good to you?

Hello all,
I am currently running the latest snapshot of Cyanogenmod 11 (M12) on my GS4 and last month I used Flashify to install TWRP 2.8.4.0 over the default CWM 6.0.4.7 recovery that comes with CM11. I did a nandroid backup to my external 64 GB microSD card and it would say that the backup was successful, and I could see it within the file manager and on my PC using MTP.
However, whenever I reboot into the OS, the backup folder gets deleted. I have then tried to backup only the /system partition to my internal storage, since I do not have enough space on my internal storage for a full nandroid. This backup worked successfully as I can access the folder from the OS, however I would still like to a full backup on my SD card since it has enough space for a full nandroid
Here is what I tried:
1. While in TWRP, I copied the newly created backup folder over MTP to my computer. After I rebooted the phone, I shut it down and plugged the SD card into my computer and copied the backup back to my SD card. However, when I placed the SD card back into the phone and powered it on, it deleted the backup again.
2. I reflashed CWM (same version, but newly downloaded and flashed using Flashify) and attempted to do a full nandroid. I received an error saying that the /data partition could not be backed up. Interestingly, I deleted an old CWM backup on my SD card, and after I rebooted that old backup was still there.
3. I flashed TWRP 2.7.1.0 and 2.8.3.0, and still have the same issue.
The version of CWM that I had before I installed TWRP would backup without issues. I am not sure if this is an OS, hardware, or an SD card issue, though my guess would be that when booting into the OS, Android deletes any changes that were made to the SD card that were not made in the OS. I am not sure how to fix this issue and was hoping someone on this forum could help, and I have searched other forums for answers, but haven't found one as specific as this, and solutions for similar problems haven't worked.
The phone works fine otherwise, I'm just worried that with CM12 M releases coming around the corner that I won't be able to install it properly with these recovery issues.
Any help on this would be appreciated, and if there is a better XDA forum for me to ask this on please let me know.
I figured out the issue. Turns out my microSD card is faulty. Sandisk will send a replacement.
