[Q] Adaway Settings - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just redownloaded Adaway and it appears to be doing it's job without any hiccups. My question here is there are some checkboxes under Preferences that I really need to know if they should be checked or not. I am under the 10 post limit so I can't ask where I got the link to use and their tutorial came up short on Preference settings. If anyone knows which boxes to check for normal usage and whether or not Adaway needs to be restarted after every update would be a big help to me and other users. Should all boxes be checked under preferences ? and if not which ones? Does Adaway need to be rebooted after an update?

The device does not need to be rebooted after updating the hosts file, however it is recommended. With regards to the preferences menu, I only have the option "check for updates on boot" checked. You don't need the other options checked unless ad blocking doesn't work for you and you need an alternative method to diagnose the issue.

[Q] Help->How to install non-marketplace app

I have a brand new AT&T Tab and need assistance. I am able to install non-marketplace apps using Sideload Wonder Machine however I have an interesting problem. I have an app (Lotus Notes Installer) that itself downloads another app and tries to install it but I get the dreaded "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market" message.
I have installed and run z4root and did a temporary root and also installed Superuser and Busybox and I still get the block message.
I am an Android newbie and don't know exactly how to proceed.
Thanks,
Richard
Hey Richard,
I had the same type of problem you did with my AT&T SGT. I also used the Sideload Wonder Machine. Here is link for my situation. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914697
Lotus Note Installer app downloading and installing another app? I have not hit that kind of hurdle. Can you get your hands on the apk that Lotus Note Installer is trying to download and install? Maybe you can istall that through sideload wonder machine?

This may be a stupid question, but have you set your Tab to allow installing of non-market apps? It's in Settings - Applications - check 'Unknown sources'
I do not see an option in my settings for "allow unknown sources", here's what I have:
Settings>Application
Manage Applications
- this doesn't appear to have any options for unknown sources settings
Running Services
- this is only for stopping running services
Development
- only options here are USB debugging, stay awake, allow mock locations
Am I missing something? or did AT&T remove the option from recently shipping tabs? (got mine yesterday)
I was able to sideload the Notes Installer, but once on the Tab, that application connects to the corporate server and attemtps to install another application on the Tab and that is where I get stuck.
Use SuperOneClick. This tool not only allow rooting but has option for allowing install of non-market apps. Simply select that option and it will update your systems settings to allow installs from other than market - sd card, web, etc. I am also using AT&T tab and this worked for me. Note it does not add the menu option of "allow apps from unknown sources" but trust me it works.

I installed the new firmware that allows me to make phone calls using the great instructions provided in theis forum and that resolved my issue and now i can install the Lotus Notes app with no problem. I am really liking the new O/S, it seems a little snappier than the the AT&T one.

You missed nothing - this is just another retarded AT&T carrier customization that they do on all their Android phones (AFAIK!).
Regards,
Dave
Yup, AT&T has removed the "install non-market apps" menu option from their retail Tabs. Very sad that they do that to their customers. I will say the I like their approach to selling the Tab, you pay the retail price and their is no contract to worry about and if you want data you pay on a month-to-month basis, exactly like they do with the Apple iPad. I cannot image getting a subsidized Tab from T-Mobile and getting stuck with a 2 year contract. In this market nobody keeps a phone or tablet for 2 years, it would be a dinosaur by then.

[Q] Nexus 4 Device Administration

I am on 4.2.2 and my security settings no longer works on my unlocked and rooted Nexus 4. It crashes each time I try to access.
It may have started after I installed my Gotcha Facetrap app. I can access part of the security tab (passwords only) through the facetrap app but can not get to the rest of the security items.
I have tried to uninstall the app and reboot but to no avail.
All I really want to do is enable the install from unknown locations.
Anybody have some ideas how to fix? Maybe through adb? I hate to wipe and reinstall everything.
Looking forward to suggestions and ideas.
Update
I found that compared to my Nexus 7, which is working fine, the Nexus 4 has all the Device Administration area greyed out when I access it through the Gotcha app. Any idea how to get Device Administration rights back?

I dont know how to bring the Security settings back except flash a rom :|
Just wait a little more and someone may help you.
But if you have to flash a ROM and dont want to reinstall everything, why dont you try Titanium backup? Then copy your apps' data to your computer (such as games because gaames' data is heavy).

"Your device isn't compatible with this version"

My wife's phone...
Anyone know why she should be getting this message for the likes of Google chrome, drive, play books, search, etc, etc... clearly, it can't be true!
I have her bootloader unlocked, rooted, running xposed with a couple of modules, and a tweaked kernel (ziddey's USB-OTG tweak).
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't get any of these apps to update!

Possibly need to update Google services , that said I have never came across or seen anyone come across this problem.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah, I'm completely baffled. No one else with ziddey's kernel tweak is complaining about this, so I'm hesitant to suspect it.
Cleared cache and dalvick, fixed permissions, cleared data on the play market and vpn'd into the US, still same problem.
I'm not sure how I would update Google services... isn't that something that would update automatically?

No it will not auto update, but it will usually prompt you once you update an app that needs it... there will be a "Security Update required" notification in the drop-down, if you swipe it away or don't allow it to update, Android will gladly let you but your apps will not function properly that require the update. The current version installed can be found in Settings-Apps-All- Google Play Services and should be 4.3.25 (1117461-036) as of this posting
It will also not allow you to search or find it in your Apps list in the Play Store without the direct link, so here it is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms
Hope that helps, because otherwise a factory default might be in order, and if the problem still persists, reflashing stock images could be required.

I guess I'll have to flash back to stock - no idea why this is still happening...
I tried sideloading the latest Google Play Services, it worked, but still the "you're device isn't compatible..." error appears for many apps. Then I tried deleting accounts, clearing cache and dalvick, fixing permissions, then re-adding accounts. Same. Then I tried sideloading the latest updates of a couple of google apps (books and drive) - it worked, but still the error message in the Play Store.
Oh well. I guess that's that.
Did you modify the screen resolution? if so that could be why you are receiving that error. I experienced that with my Galaxy Nexus. If you keep resolution stock it shouldn't display that message unless for whatever reason the app truly isn't compatible with the phone.
Ive had this issie with certain apps that i KNOW are compatible with my phone. Whenever i get this error, i just use an alternate source, like blackmart, or googling the app you want to download and download it from somewhere besides google play.
Then again, since you are running a lot of custom things, you may want to try starting over from stock, not customizing anything, then try downloading those apps and seeing if your still getting that error.
Thanks, but the apps most definitely are compatible with the phone. They're Google apps on a nexus phone! And they're already installed (either stock or via the market, with no errors).
I'm aware that I can sideload the apps and have done do so successfully with a couple of them, but that really defeats the convenience of automatic updates, especially seeing as it's my wife's phone.
I will, when I have time, try factory restoring or flashing stock and going from there. The mods I'm using are fairly minor, but I suppose something, somewhere must have gotten screwed up.
Oh well, thanks for all the help anyway.

If your rooted, download lucky patcher, and theres an option to download a modded google play store. Have no idea if this will help with your issue, but its just an idea if wanna wanna give it a shot.

He already has the apps installed, that's not the issue, these are even stock Google apps saying they are incompatible after successfully installed. Unfortunately this is probably a wipe and reinstall situation now.

or he should watch at the build.prop or there is something edited or need to wipe data from google playstore or there is some xposed module which is causing it I don't know but if you edited a lot on that custom rom with kernel and like that backup it first don't go immediately to stock or else it was just wasted time for you. It could also be your dpi but I don't think that's it also wipe cache in recovery that might work.
I'm sure this will work for you.
Open Settings app → Tap on Apps → Look for the Google Play Store and tap on it → Press on three-dots at the right corner and Tap on Uninstall updates → Tap on Ok to confirm
That's it!

How to install/update apps without conflicts

Hi,
After receiving an OTA update I my phone got updated to May security patch.
As we all know, after this we are unable to download apk's in order to update the apps due to package conflicts etc etc.
I think I found a easy workaround that ad been working, at least for me, always I needed. Just finished updating 7 apps.
They procedure is ad follows:
1. Download the app (I always use apkmirror)
2. Go to Samsung File Manager/My Files and create a shortcut of the app to your Home screen
3. Go to settings > lockscreen & security
4. Disable all lockscreen securities
5. Reboot phone
6. Install all apps by clicking on the shortcuts you created.
After this you can enable lockscreen securities again.
That's it, easy as that!
Please share your experiences to see if also work for you.

Same here
Yea I already tried this a while back, seems to work for some, not others
That said, there are some apps that will still install on mine with the April patch that also caused problems, the latest TouchWiz Home installs fine, and so does the latest Gallery
I think the problem is with the apps not the security patch, as previous versions would not install, latest versions will
Maybe some apps are not compatible with the update you are running until they are also updated
I tried to update several apps but I wasn't able. Seems like this method is not working for me anymore....

FIRE HD 8 2017 - Anyway to stop OTA?

Hello, just received my Fire HD 8 (2017), with Fire OS 5.3.3.0.
I am aware no root exists for that firmware at the minute. I was wondering if there was a way to stop OTA updates, so that if root comes out for that version I'm not stuck on the latest. Thanks.
I just received one as well and came here looking for similar info. Short of keeping the device turned off, I don't think there is a way to stop it from trying to update without root. However, you should be able to block the requests by using a no-root firewall app like NetGuard or NoRoot Data Firewall. See the following for some info:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/block-ota-updates-root-t3496861
(Note: one user there mentions the OP method no longer works on 5.3.3)
I received mine today as well, but unwittingly entered wifi details during the setup and, of course, the bloody thing updated straightaway. So now its on 5.4.
Just one thing. I have developer options and install from unknown sources enabled, but when I try to install any apk's copied from my phone using myappshare, the install button doesn't work. Is this because they were downloaded from the Google app store originally? None of the copied apps are available on the Amazon app store.

someone on a different thread mentioned that a reboot is needed after enabling the "install from unknown sources" for the install button to work.
