Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get clockwork installed on a rooted stock firmware vibrant for a friend. Using ROM manager i've tried to install CWM and it says it is successful, however after trying to reboot into recovery and choosing re-install packages I get these errors:
E:Failed to verify Whole File Signature
E:signature verification failed
Installtion aborted
I tried flashing Vibrant (MTD) Clockwork Recover 3.x from ROM manager but it does the same thing.
Also tried the AIO tool from the sticky in the dev section and it doesn't work either. I chose the custom ROM but it doesn't push it to the phone or reboot it into recovery. (The install drivers option gave me a windows unhandled exception error)
I downloaded Heimdall but am not sure how it's used, can it flash any ROM or only specially formatted ones?
I've been searching these forums for a few days now and finding so much new and old processes to do things and I'm not very familiar with Samsung phones so any help is appreciated. Thank-you.
Re-Root it
Re-root the phone using One-click, when Baywolfs fails, one click always does it because it push's it through using ADB
CWM wont work unless the phone is proper ROOTED, youll know when its done right, cause youll see the super=user App after your done
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739300
After that, un-install Rom manager, then re-install it, then while your connected to WIFI or provider, make sure you flash CWM recovery,
Re- download the ROM again, but dont open it!!
Then when you are ready to flash that ROM as a zipped file, DO NOT open it [ meaning UNZIP] or you'll continue to get the signature error.
Then either flash using reboot into recovery or install using CWM option of sd card install, either or works!! .
Are you having trouble getting past the stock 3e recovery? I've been trying to get past it for a few days but have been poking around learning the in/outs of this. I have not yet gotten Rom Manager to properly flash CWM Recovery... the stock 3e is stubborn. Once CWM recovery is done, your options open up for backups, restores and installing some custom roms.
I don't know what the solution is but I'm still looking around.
Hope this was on track...
Its stuborn in the sense its picky about free space. You'll need to free up some room in order to use CWM. Reference this thread for guidance -

Hello. I just received my OTA notification, but when I clicked it, it rebooted and landed my on the TWRP recovery screen. Not knowing what to do, I just told it to reboot to the system.
Once rebooted, I was still on 4.2.1, and there was no update.
Any ideas why it booted to TWRP?
The OTA update requires stock recovery in order to be flashed. I recommend you just flash the update manually using fastboot, and you won't lose data.

Maybe before you even answer, I'm sure I'll find a link on here to show me how?
One issue I have though, is that when I manually updated to 4.2.1 on my Nexus 7, I still got an OTA update a few days later, that actually ran.
I don't ever plan on flashing roms to any of my devices. Do I need to keep a custom recovery on my Nexus 4 or 7? If not, how to I revert back to the stock recovery?
If you saved the offical stock 4.2.1 images, to revert back to stock recovery, just use the 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.**************.img' command. If you haven't, you might have to flash the whole 4.2.2 rom which you can find on the google dev website. After this, if you only want to root then you don't need to flash a custom recovery, just use the 'boot' command instead of the 'flash' one.

How did you do that? Did you sideload wrinkle's file from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848?
I should let you know, that while I'm not afraid to install via the custom recovery, it doesn't mean I've done it via commands. I've always used toolkits, or one click methods of rooting and installing custom recoveries.
Well, this is crazy (weird?). I tried to flash it via TWRP by downloading the zip file in the thread referenced above, and it failed. By flashing, I mean, I chose 'Install' and pointed to the zip after moving it to my phone. After failing, I wiped the Dalvik cache and rebooted, and it's telling me 'Android is upgrading'. If it means it updated, so be it. But can anyone explain? Feeling a little confused here.
Edit: Ok, so it said it was upgrading, but it's still 4.2.1.

It 'upgrades' when you wipe the cache. It just means it's rebuilding the cache. Are you running an unmodified stock rom? Custom kernel?

Yes, stock rom, rooted and unlocked. I did install Beats today. Could this be the problem? If so, I found a revert zip that I'm assuming is supposed to revert me back to stock audio codecs.
I don't think added files matter, but I'm guessing the Beats mod has overwritten something in system, so flash the revert zip, then try again.

Flashing the revert zip failed. I'm starting to think that flashing anything with TWRP will fail.
How about this. I made a backup of all system data + apps with Titanium earlier today. Could I just reset my phone back to factory defaults, restore my apps + some system data, then re-root (*without a custom recovery*) and wait for the update again? Or will it come again?
Also, I've used Wugfresh's Nexus Toolkit. I don't remember checking the custom recovery button, but ended up with TWRP anyway. What's the easiest way to root without installing a custom recovery?
You could try that, and the update will come straiht away. You can root without flashing a custom recovery, just use the 'boot recovery' instead of 'flash recovery'

Ok, I'm surely not afraid to use the command prompt. Any tutorials you can point me to? I probably already have all of the drivers I need, as the toolkit had to download install them.

The same thing happened to me. I was rooted running stock ROM with TWRP recovery (used wugfresh toolkit). The problem was I forgot I was using a modified kernel (for color correction) by molesarecoming. I flashed the stock kernel back, downloaded and flashed the OTA file from the help desk thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848&highlight=beats), and it worked. Oh, and I flashed the Superuser file immediately after the OTA did it's thing (while still in TWRP) to regain root. I didn't really like how after the initial failed install of the OTA, it took my into TWRP with no error message showing or anything.
I don't think TWRP is your problem -- I think beats is your problem. It may have modified something. Try searching the above-linked thread for answers. Honestly, there's no rush to get 4.2.2, so take your time finding the answer. It's better than wiping the phone just to install a small android update and having to redo everything on your phone again.
Ok, it must have been the Beats audio drivers. I restored a Nandroid backup from right before installing the beats audio drivers, then flashed the zip and it worked. Now running 4.2.2.
I would like to know, however, how to use fastboot via commands, so that I can learn how to flash TWRP, CWM, Stock recovery, etc.

I need some help here - I have nexus 7 with 3G and Google (takju) with 4.2.1 installed.
I had it 'rooted" and installed TWRP .
AT the time I followed instructions to chand extension of some file to .bak - to prevent 'unrooting"
I do not remember which file I unfortunately changed.
Now I cannot install the 4.2.2 upgrade - the OTA fails because it boots into TWRP and after that I rrid several selections from TWRP screen (flash, reboot, etc) - but all attempts failed.
I have the upgrade files (bot .tar and .zip) on /sdcard directory but have no idea how to update to 4.2.2.
Tried manual flashing using adb command - all fails.
I do not have beats drivers installed
Can someone tell me how to uninstall TWRP? If the CWM recovery works with this upgrade, I would like to change from TWRP to CWM.
Or any other suggestion wold be appreciated.
I am really struggling with Android operating system the way it configured on Nexus 7 by Google - any simplest is a major pain!
Hope I can get out of this and operate the device instead of continuously meddling with operating system.
Thanks in advance

You need to get into fastboot mode but first download Matt's utility 1.20 and follow the interactions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249773
to get into AP fastboot mode turn off you're device and hold power+ vol up + vol down and then when you get to a black and white screen use vol down to navigate, scroll down to where it says AP fastboot and press vol up
in Matt's utility it gives you the options to flash stock 4.1.2 in fastboot mode.
it's option 1 I think.
if you decide the option to root you has to be in USB debugging. (phone needs to be booted up)
it would be nice if you unlocked you're device's bootloader, and Flash TWRP recovery. it's a better option than safestrap now anyways good luck.

Do not use utility version 1.20, unless you have updated to 4.1.2. You will have issues. If you have not updated, you need to use utility version 1.10.

I had got my razr m on 4.1.1 and then i had rooted and installed safestrap and had flashed several roms on the stock slot also. So the rom in the stock slot is 4.1.2. But I cant boot into it. If you updated to official Verizon update in stock slot (4.1.2), then you need to use utility 1.20. 1.20 is designed for 4.1.2 and it includes all the fastboot files for 4.1.2. The key here is whether or not you flashed the official update. There are only a couple of 4.1.2 based aftermarket ROMs available, and they're over on DroidRzr.com (cm10.1 doesn't count because it's not a stock based build). If you didn't take the Verizon update and didn't flash any of MHouse's DST or FXZ ROMs, then you should still be on 4.1.1. If you are on 4.1.1, then use the utility version 1.10. Honestly, you just need to get over the fact you're going to lose ROMs and data, and fastboot the phone back to stock. Then, start from scratch. If you have any important data, save it to your external SD or computer. You'll be able to flash everything again, once you have a good, clean stock install. Then, after fastbooting, unlock your bootloader and stop dealing with SafeStrap. Install a custom recovery, and flash until your heart's content.
Yeah my bad, I didn't know it could cause issues. Anyway, it doesn't matter if you lose safestrap because right now unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom recovery is safer, lol. if you do decide to install a custom recovery make sure you backup you're stock ROM.
If you don't wanna lose your roms and stiff back up with ss and put it on so doesn't take but about 10 mixtures after fastbooting to go back the way it was

thanks, its just strange that the 2-3 roms i have tried have all returned that error message, I will download the rom you linked and get back to you.....
is that rom to go on with odin, as currently i have stock recovery......?
no joy with the linked rom......
same thing happened, i can successfully get it rooted and flash recoveries no problem......
is it possible its a sd card problem.....
also, when i go to restore the back up i make before flashing the rom, it reverts back to a brand new handset, so i need to set it all up again, put in my Google account details etc.......all my apps return obviously, but this isn't meant to happen is it......
it really is confusing me, all the other devices I have had in the past and currently have flashed ok........
when i wipe before the flash, its just the default factory reset, cache, dalvik I do , is this correct?
That should be fine, it is possible the sd card is corrupt or not communicating properly with the recovery. You could always put the rom on the internal sd card.... Just don't factory wipe or you could loose the rom you are trying to flash...
That didn't work either......so frustrated with this.......
Can someone go through the exact procedure....I know there are guides but personal experience s are best.....

Before flashing a kdz to downgrade you must wipe data and format system, if you didnt do it before try the hard reset combo and it shoukd boot, else you must flash a different kdz

Yeah, i've done all of this, I've already used many roms in this phone and others too, but always with CWM. This time I tried to flash the stock kernel, without CWM, and now I don't know what to do for my computer to recognize it as a phone again and flash CWM to restart.
I've only found ways to hard reset with the phone and debbuging mode on or by CWM. Do you know any post that explains how to do by other way?

Yeah, i've done all of this, I've already used many roms in this phone and others too, but always with CWM. This time I tried to flash the stock kernel, without CWM, and now I don't know what to do for my computer to recognize it as a phone again and flash CWM to restart.
I've only found ways to hard reset with the phone and debbuging mode on or by CWM. Do you know any post that explains how to do by other way?

You can flash CWM fron FASTBOOT, but to boot into fastbbot you need an unlocked bootloader and if you havent cwm probably you are on a locked bootloader.
There is no other way, so flash a new different KDZ that include and unlocked bootloader and CWM
