hey guys,
is there a way to pair a bluetoothkeyboard with the defy? And is there a cable to pair the defy with a tv?
Mfg.Homer
As for the cable to TV, I don't think so.
But wouldn't any Bluetooth keyboard just pair with the Defy, or is that dependent on some profile that is not present on the Defy? I.e. do you own a keyboard and can't make it work, or do you just want to know if it would work?
There is a keyboard from "HAMA" which works...but you need any add-on...
keyboards
Tried a chinese bluetooth kb ... driver didn´t work.
3rd party drivers did somehow, but have been a pain in the ass in daily use.
Hardware keyboard which would be best in thinking of energy doesn´t because of missing USB Host.
Still: Defy ist the best phone I ever had ... but the road is loohooong ...
A quick Google search suggests there are enough keyboards to choose from. Just check if there is an Android driver and you should be fine.
Don't really get why one would want a keyboard though. It kind of undoes the portability and it seems a hassle to use. Don't get me wrong: I loved the keyboard on my old HTC Wizard. But that one was integrated in the phone which might be a better option for you as well!

- because you need some sort of time machine to get another waterproof mobile with a querty keyboard.
I would have liked a micro one for a adventure trip to proper blog and chat - the phones are nearly usable for that.
It works with Froyo !
Sorry for such a late post. Anyway, I bought this cheap BT keyboard some time ago. Whilst running the stock Eclair ROM, I had to use 3rd party applications to handle it, but never without lots of issues. I had bought it for test purposes, since Android was not listed as a supported platform. But after I flashed Froyo (in my case, the 3.4.3-11 UK ROM), the keyboard just works as it should. After it was paired (the digit sequence specified on the phone - I chose the widely known 0000 - must be entered in the BT keyboard, followed by <Enter>), I just turn the keyboard on (with the Defy's BT radio also turned on, of course) and press any key. The bluetooth link is immediately established, and I'm able enter data to any applications through it.
Just my 2 cents...

Carlos
good news
thanks4info.
I will jump on the CM7 train as soon as (a)gps is ok and will try there.
Still hoping to get usb host running, as other projects successfully activated it per software. Will post results after playing around with CM7.

Wow! For a long time, there was no posts at all in this thread. Ok, back to business. You see, I'm running CM10 too. In fact, due to some issues, I'm still on Quarx 11/17 build. Anyway, until I saw your post, my keyboard was forgotten in a drawer. I took it off, turned it on, pressed a key, and, although it was already paired with the phone, an entry in the status bar came up, which, upon being tapped, asked me to either allow or deny the connection. After a couple of times answering 'Yes', the bluetooth icon, in the status bar, turned blue, and, from that point on, all the text I entered was correctly taken by the phone, without any issues. Have you gone through this phase as well?
EDIT: have just flashed Quarx's CM10.1 05/27 build. Couldn't find a way to make my BT keyboard work with it. Haven't tried his CM10 new buiild, but as they seem to share all the radio (BT, Wifi) parts, it is most probable that it won't work there either. I'm already back to his 11/17 build.
there's some keybords that works, but it depends on the ROM too.
I had a chinese one, and it was a lot better to type than the touch keyboard, but, for me it wasn't very useful because I was unable to use some accents, and I usualy type in Portuguese.
Okay Ive been looking for about an hour now and have given up on the search for this. But I'm trying to get my cardock to play music through the 3.5mm jack on the back of the dock when its plugged in. I've found a bunch of useful posts that fix it in Froyo but I can find any fix to work on Gingerbread. Specifically I'm running latest CM7 and using the regular CM kernel. If there is another kernel I can download to fix the problem or anything please let me know.
Thanks!
are you in the right forum? (Samsung Vibrant).
I don't know of a car dock, and there's no port for it. The USB port is on the top.
I have the desktop dock and I couldn't get the sound to route through the external speakers either. There is a setting in CM7 but it doesn't seem to work. I also had an app that would re-route sound for the car and desktop dock that works great on 2.2 and 2.2.1 but it would not run in CM7.
To my knowledge, and this is running with Froyo, the only way to get the audio to come out of the car dock 3.5 mm jack is to use the Samsung Car Dock application. I May be wrong, but this is what I have discovered so far, which sucks as I really prefer the Google Car Home app.

Hey everyone, I currently own a Ford Fiesta which has Sync. I'm trying to shed some light regarding MTP(USB) and Ford Sync.
So far, my research shows that the Galaxy Nexus which introduced MTP, people would have their playlist get stuck at "Indexing" and you were not able to sync through USB (Bluetooth pairing works fine).
I've tried the regular methods of, factory resetting SYNC and doing a master reset on my car. Anyone have better experience with this situation? Advice?
As a background, the only music I have is Google Music. I currently have a couple albums in my device but the rest are uploaded. Tomorrow morning I'm going to try updating my software (which I believe is already up to date) but worth a shot. I have the Nexus 4 running (Android 4.2 [doy!])
Help would be greatly appreciated!

Selfless BUMP.
If this doesn't work is there anyway I can make a (Music)folder partitioned so that it will mount ?
I know currently there's not MTP to USB Mass Storage mode :/ but there has to be a way to get this working
How good is the Nexus 4 working with Sync? Anything to look out for or any tips you can provide? Gonna be trying it with my Ford soon. What works and what doesn't work?
I happen to have a Fiesta with sync... I've never tried plugging my N4 into it, though... I either just stream Pandora (get the Pandora app link if you haven't yet; it's awesome!) or play music from my thumb drive. If you'd like, I can give it a try in my car and see if I get any other results.
BTW, does your phone work with text messaging?

Pretty good... the sound quality is noticeably worse than my older phone, though, but it's not too bad. Pairing is a lot quicker I've noticed. Text messaging doesn't work, however... I know only a few phones do, though.
I'm just curious if you can get all the wireless Bluetooth functionality that Ford Sync claims? Such as reading of incoming text messages, voice activated calling, things like that. Does it work for you? I'm guessing by your question that text messaging does not work, sadly.
Here's a summary of my experience.
-Currently, MTP on the Nexus 4 makes USB Audio not sync, so you can't play music through USB (You'll get stuck at Indexing FOREVER).
-Bluetooth Audio works pretty well however you won't get info such as Artist, Song name, etc.
-Streaming audio through bluetooth doesn't let you do "Play Artist XXX or Play Song XXX" that USB Audio CAN provide.
-With that said, like someone said above me, you can use a USB thumb drive just fine to play a bunch of songs. If you have a Ford Fiesta 2012, there's a secret Secondary USB2 for developers which works PERFECTLY fine. (http://www.fiestafaction.com/forums/ice-car-entertainment/31647-second-usb-port-19.html)
-Sync can read your messages once it does come in but you have to press OK a couple of times.
-The Sync Messaging system is TERRIBLE. You cannot reply with a custom message. You always have to use preset ones. I really wish someone is able to hack the sync button to call Google Now or something.. that would be AWESOME.
-Using Pandora App Link works pretty well, you can skip tracks and pause it's awesome.
-Sync Services can be pretty useful. I recommend using downloading an app called Send To Car, which lets you go on google maps, type a location or business address and "share" it to Send to Car which then sends it to your car so you can navigate.
Sync isn't perfect, but it has an even share of good and bad. If you're in to buying a Ford Fiesta, I recommend holding off for the 2014 version which will support MyFord Touch. This actually allows AVRCP1.3 so you can stream audio track names etc through bluetooth.
Thanks for the information!

I agree, now that would be great.
Shameless bump.
So I found out today my friend's S3 is able to stream music through USB in his Ford. According to my car forums as well iPhone 5 users are able to do the same on SYNC capable cars. :/ I know these phones incorporate MTP style storage so why can't my Nexus 4 do it ): .

Hi darkamikaze,
Can you let me know what version of Ford Sync you are running? I'm going to guess it's an non-MyFord Touch system, which seems to have more support for the Bluetooth MAP profile.
I've got a Nexus 4 on order, and running the latest MyFord Touch system. I will report back if this seems to work any better.
Yes I have the Gen1 on my Fiesta'12 which I know for a fact will never get the better bluetooth profile which allows media info to be passed along to my fiesta's dash.
Still unfortunate that I can't get the damn USB-To-Nexus 4 working -_-; Forever stuck at indexing.
Just for everyone's information:

It would be interesting to eventually see an app to interface with Google Now. Additionally, I believe that Ford Sync systems use the i.MX516 ARM with processorWEIMX: Windows® Embedded for i.MX Applications Processor. I could be wrong about the OS though. It would be cool if they made the OS code open source, imagine the possibilities.
That is fantastic news! I'm gonna try to dive into this right now!

Another thing beside music is the calling feature. When I receive a call and wanted to take it on private then I should answer from the phone not the wheel button nor the dashboard screen but when I do so the call would still trans to the car audio. When I used blackberry before I used to answer from wheel/dashboard for car audio call OR I could answer from the phone to have a private call on the handset.
Any thoughts?

I picked my car up on Wednesday. I've not tried my N4 with it via Bluetooth Audio yet as I have a 32gb USB Drive doing nothing so I've just put that in there.
The only issue I'm having is getting Text Messaging working with my N4. It just says that the Nexus 4 does not support this feature. I've looked around and found people mentioning the MAP Profile setting but I can't find it anywhere. My only guess is that this setting doesn't exist on the UK Version which is built in to the new Fiesta.
People from the UK can't even register on Syncmyride.com
Using Services (Sending Location)
Is anyone else here having an issue with Ford Sync Services & their Nexus 4s? Specifically, I have a Ford Fiesta with the latest Sync SW, and every time I use Services (for instance to get directions or to find out traffic), it says it can't find my location.
Just want to rule out that it's the phone that's the problem- so has anyone successfully done this with their N4s?
Thanks!

Trying to help some one in the States with the same problem... They have a 2013 Ford Focus + Nexus 4... The Nexus 4 pairs with MyTouch Sync just fine.. But for messaging it says the device aka Nexus 4 is not compatible with Bluetooth Messaging.... Been trying to find ow to activate or check if MAP Profile allows for Bluetooth Messaging...
I am wondering if the 4.2.2 update will address any of the BT profile problems... ( Never mind.. Seems Google hasn't fix any of the BT problems with 4.2.2... WTF Google..)
PM me if u find a solution.. I'll do the same...

All I've found is that the Nexus 4 lacksthe BT MAP Profile which is required by Sync to use Text Messaging. Samsung devices on the other hand have the BT MAP Profile, so my girlfriends phone works fine with it.
CM 10.1 supposedly has the profile but it's broken. I've been checking the nightlies but no one has fixed it yet. If I knew what I was doing I'd have a go at porting the profile over from a samsung device myself.

I also have been trying CM 10.1 to get MAP working so I can access text messages on MyFord Touch in my Focus. Just updated to CM 10.1 RC2 and it still isn't working for me.
I just want to know whose hare-brained idea it was to eliminate UMS from Android in the first place.
Both my N4 and my wife's SGS3 (i747) get stuck at "INDEXING" forever when plugging into Sync in our 2012 Fusion. She actually switched back to her HTC Vivid because of it.
Here's to hoping 10.1 final will restore UMS functionality.
I had the "indexing forever problem" when I first tried USB with nexus 4.I noticed that a couple minutes in the phone would show "media.process has stopped". What I did was clear the USB mass storage cache. Settings>apps>all>media storage>clear cache. Then no problems. Sync finished indexing in a minute and media voice control works fine. I use syncmyitunes to add music. When I first had problems I deleted all music on phone and added only one song to the music folder to index the first time. This might help also. Now after all this, sync occasionally states it has detected a new device and indexes again. Usually this is when I forget to plug in the phone BEFORE starting the car. Hope this helps someone.
Trying to connect the N4 to a car Bluetooth audio (2012 model car, relatively new, only 9 months old).
(1) I had a very hard time getting the two paired: lots of "connection failed" attempts until they finally connected.
(2) The phone does not send artist/track info which is surprising as I have an older LG phone running Android 2.3.4 and that sends all the info.
(3) Without any music being streamed to the car audio, if I make a phone call via the car bluetooth, when the call ends the music player on the N4 starts automatically. This is very annoying, not sure if it's a problem with the car implementation sending a "play" command at the end of the call or the N4 doing something weird. I tend to blame the N4 as two other phones, an iPhone and the older LG mentioned above do not do this.
(4) The car has a play/pause toggle that it can send to the bluetooth player. Pause works, the player on the N4 pauses, but then play doesn't work, I have to hit play on the device.
(5) After I use bluetooth on the N4, I find that sometimes the widget toggle can no longer turn bluetooth on/off until I reboot the phone.
(6) After I use bluetooth on the N4, the phone sometimes randomly reboots. Not sure if it's really related or just a coincidence. Given (5) above I suspect something is going on.
Anyone else having such a hard time with the bluetooth part? Potential hardware issue or simply buggy software that we can hope to get addressed at some point?
I have experienced the issue with track information not being sent. Also random changes in volume during playback. Seems there's still some work that needs to be done in 4.2 regarding blue tooth.

Is this an issue that can be addressed by flashing a custom ROM or perhaps using a different music player than stock or is there more to it, deep down in the bluetooth drivers and it would need a fix from Google in the form of new drivers?
Yeah I have had a few issues too. My track/artist/album names do not send where my S2 sends them. Also the headunit I have has buttons for shuffle and repeat and these do not show up at all (I assume because it detects they aren't supported). I haven't taken a call yet or tried turning BT off after streaming but I'll give it a shot and see.. My nexus 4 also randomly shuts down for no apparent reason sometimes (rarely atm). I think it's just 4.2.1 problems - I doubt a different music app will fix it (I tried one), custom ROM may work though..
My N4 is paired with an Alpine 135BT and it's worked very well so far. I initially had some trouble connecting but once they were paired I didn't have any additional connection issues. The N4 does automatically play as soon as it connects to the unit. I've got BeyondPod and Spotify installed and for whatever reason it always defaults to BeyondPod instead of Spotify even if I had BeyondPod closed and Spotify open. Not a big deal to me though.
Are you running the stock rom or a custom rom? I had my EVO LTE hooked up to the same head unit. It worked perfectly on the stock software but gave me all kinds of trouble when I started using custom roms. Otherwise, it could just be that the N4 and your particular head unit just don't play nicely together.

(1) Haven't had any connection issues so far on my vehicle or my wife's.
(2) Currently stock Android uses AVCR v1.0 which only only allows you to control via Bluetooth (play, pause, etc) but not send track info. Other manufactures that customize Android (LG, Samsung, etc) will sometimes use v1.3 that supports track info. That's why your old phone did it.
You could install a custom Rom that has v1.3. I think cm10 does.
(3) Again, not happening on my two cars. The only time the music starts after a call is if it was playing before the call. I'm wondering if you have another music/podcast player that is taking over Bluetooth controls and causing problems. I use the stock player and Player Pro. If I don't disable the headset/BT controls in Player Pro I have control issues.
(4) I have the same issue. To get around this I cheat and push the track advance button on the radio to play the next track.
(5) This is an issue I've had on all of my previous android phones. I haven't noticed I my N4 because I never toggle off Bluetooth anymore.
(6) Not having this problem but maybe try solution in (3).

dont know why, but today even the start/stop, forward and prev. buttons didnt work! the only thing i can use is volume control..
anyone an idea?
Any luck with this?
I want to buy one but couldn't find it in Sri Lanka so planning to order one via ebay & need to check if it works. Running cyanogen mod 10, heard that the bluetooth stack was updated on CM which supports most of the features since stock rom only has older stack version which can have issues!

my impression is that almost nothing involving Bluetooth functions as it should currently on the N4. I can't even get a mouse to work. what a shambles! it's not as if BT is some new technology. this all better get sorted out in 4.2.2.
If I'm not mistaken Google moved to a new Broadcom b/t stack. Yeah, good move! And I agree, b/t has been around for like what at least 10 years now? You'd think that getting track info should be a given by now. I have a crappy old LG phone running Gingerbread and it has no issues at all.
Bluetooth
When I got the N4, I connected my helmet headset to it and everything seems to work fine. My headset supports ad2p music and phone. Both connected and both worked, including play controls. Not sure about the audio quality, I didn't test it long enough After I flashed Jellybro (CM 10.1 Kang) Music connects, but phone goes on a connect/disconnect loop. Audio needs further testing, can't tell if the left side is off because of the bluetooth or not. Controls work most of the time, every now and again playback will decide to pause itself and sometimes the play command doesn't work. Haven't had a chance to flash stock CM 10.1 nightly yet either.
Play/Pause Works Inconsistently
Has anyone had this issue?
I am on stock 4.2.2, I connect with my car stereo no problems. I use to be able to just hit play/pause on my car stereo and it would just play music from Google Music. Now, sometimes when I hit the play/pause button on my stereo, it won't play. I have to manually hit play from my phone. After initially doing that, then I can hit play/pause and the control is there. I haven't had the problem since I got my phone on Nov 14th, this issue just started to happen. I notice this after installing Light Manager, but I have uninstalled it and still the issue is there. It is inconsistent, but the issue is more often than not.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Just reiterating, stock Android does not show artist/track info, it is not in the protocol, but you can skip tracks or go back to previous tracks. If it is important to you, you should root and get a custom ROM, not sure which ones for N4 has it though, been too happy with stock to root.

When I tell my tablet or my phone to "play some [artist]" it will open Google Play Music and start playing songs by that artist. If do the same on my Shield TV (from homescreen by pushing the Nvidia button) it will start a search for that exact sentence, which makes the microphone fairly useless. It will only do literal searches nothing I say is interpreted as a command.
I'm running a rooted 2.1 stock rom and using the included Shield controller. Using Android TV remote app doesn't help. It's been this way through multiple factory resets.
Has anybody else had this happen? Any suggestions?
Got my Shield TV yesterday.
The voice search when pressing the OK Google button on Controller and remote does not work.
It inputs the voice command and then says "Did not catch that" or something like that.
When i type in the search it shows results.
Voice in Youtube works perfectly.
I am thinking about doing a reset

It inputs the voice command and then says "Did not catch that" or something like that.
When i type in the search it shows results.
Voice in Youtube works perfectly.
I am thinking about doing a reset

Yup, same problem here.
What language are you using it with? Is it English like the Irish flag under your name might suggest?

I am using English GB
Another guy from the UK on a shield owners thread that he was facing the same issue, so it may be an issue on Google's end.
It recognizes it and inputs when i say "open Google Music" but nothing happens
It varies between displaying cannot contact Google to did not catch that even though it displays "Open Google music"
Does it work for you if you use it with American English? It is for me.
I contacted the Nvidia support and was describing this issue and they told me that it's already known. I was told they are working on a fix but of course no time frame when they will fix it was given.
Thank you for trying to help. Really appreciate it.
I switched to English US just there and no joy
Funny thing is when it says to press right to start typing, it then opens Google Music.
I am glad to know it is a known issue though and will be fixed hopefully soon
It's not even working with US English? That sucks
This little 'trick' worked for me but I don't really have to mention that this is not very practicable, do I?
I also really hope they fix it very soon. Android TV is meant to be used with voice commands, Google is quite good at it and still they don't manage to make it work flawlessly
I asked for an ETA for the fix but we all know support guys, they barely know anything
It seems to have been resolved today.
English GB
You're right! It's working for me in German as well :victory:
uhms i have a similar issue, just got a new shield tv with the remote "free", now if i use the voice commands on the controller it always works, if i use it however on the remote it always works when the remote is connected via usb to the shield console, but when its not it sometimes stops working and only starts working again when i connect it, if i than disconnect it again from teh cable it wont work disconnected, but if i let it a minute or so connected, than disconnect it, than it works again for some time. Im thinking that here might be a power issue with the battery, that if its too low, it doesnt work (although it says in the shield devices, that it has "good" battery)
