Google Dialer Crashes - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I sideloaded the Google Dialer from the Nexus devices on my rooted Verizon Galaxy S5. I downloaded the APK, copied it to /system/priv-app, changed the permissions to 644 (rw-r--r--), then ran the APK to install the dialer. I tried launching both from the app drawer and through Nova's shorcut, Actions, Google Dialer and then the first phone option; both ways loads the launcher and then immediately crashes with the error "Unfortunately, Google Dialer has stopped." Has anybody had any success getting the Google Dialer to work on their Galaxy S5? If so, any workarounds that you had to do to get it to work or did it just work? I'm wondering if it's because I froze a bloatware or installed an app that's causing a conflict. My stock Samsung dialer works fine, but I'm not a fan of that dialer and I like the local business search feature of the Google Dialer.

I installed it, but it crashes as soon as I try to search for a person (type any key and crash). I'm not really interested in rooting my phone til CM is ready, but I hear you need to to get it working properly.

Crashing here too, something with S5 firmware or software?

Same here
I'm on a Verizon Galaxy S5 rooted with GEL and I tried making a shortcut to the Google Dialer with QuickShortcutMaker. The dialer crashes every time. Would love to be able to use the Google Dialer again. Coming from CM11 on a Galaxy Nexus.

To stop it crashing, you need to clear your system caches.
Go to the Applications manager in the Settings menu and find the Google dialer in the "all" column
Choose force stop > clear cache > clear data
Now reboot to recovery mode (power phone down, then volume up + home + power)
And select clear cache
Then a normal reboot and you should be good
.

I am having a problem with the stock Samsung dailer, it crashes at least once whenever making a call. I tried clearing the cache that helped for a little bit but now the issue is back,. Any idea of how to get rid of this problem permanently?

[GUIDE] CM7 Home Button Tweak Fix

So I was bothered by not having a home button on screen of CM7 on the Kindle, so I was looking around setting and saw that you can add custom application launching on long press of the search button at the bottom. Awesome right? So I went over to the market, ran a search for "Home Button" and downloaded the first one on the list and assigned it to the long press for search button. Now I can get to the home screen on ease!
Is CM7 worth the install though? I mean with no audio functionality and misc. other bugs still, why not just keep your kfire rooted running a launcher like GO ex or ICS launcher?
Serious question as I'm still new to all this. Kfire is my first experience into the android/smartphone/tablet world. But love the hack/mod'ing. I want a new rom but not sure if the recently released CM7 is worth it right now.
I guess my real question is, why did you decide to go ahead and start using CM7?
You can easily add home button through settings on CM7. Settings - Cyanogen Settings - Tablet Tweaks - Choose soft buttons and check /uncheck the buttons you would like.
Yay thankx.

Thanks! The only thing is when I go to Settings>Cyanogen Settings it automatically force closes:
"The applications Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
Funny thing is, I can go into Settings and select any of the other categories, i.e. Display, Applications, Accounts & Sync, etc. But when I select Cyanogen Settings I get a force close... any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. As a temporary solution I'm pressing the power button down for 1 second. This brings up a menu with a shortcut to the home screen.
I don't expect to be able to solve the problem of opening the CM Settings, but I'm looking for a way to enable the home button from the shell.

Did you clear the Cache and Dalvik Cache when you flashed the CM7 ROM?
I'm wondering if this has to do with the FC. Generally speaking you should do this when flashing new ROMs just to purge previous ROM data.

Yes I did. I was suprised to find that the app's i'd installed under KF standard were still installed. Does that mean I did the clear incorrectly?
I'm going to try re-installing again and see if anything changes.

Dalvik is the base running platform for android apps, and the Dalvik cache normally houses user data and app settings. Wiping it should clear everything from a previous flash if done correctly.
Make sure you are wiping it before you boot into your newly flashed ROM to avoid anything wonky happening.

I'm using TWRP2 to flash the the CM7 update.zip. After a minute or so I get the option to "Wipe Cache/Dalvik".
I've just done this for the third time and noticed that the output from the wipe operation ends with:
Code:
/sd-ext not present, skipping
I don't know if that is significant.
I have also tried wiping the cache first from the TWRP2 wipe menu.

Getting a CM Settings forceclose?
I was having this exact same issue while using TWRP2.0 to install CM7. I was wiping system, cache and dalvik cache... just like everyone was saying. I figured out that you have to do Factory Reset as well. Once you do all four steps: Wipe System, Cache, Dalvik Cache and do a Factory Reset, CM7 installed perfectly and the CM settings no longer force closes.
See if that works for you.
Nick
That works perfectly! Even Amazon Appstore working now when it wasn't before.

[Q] HELP! Constant Message for Weather App Stopped

I am getting a constant barrage that tells me "Unfortunately, Weather has stopped". I assume it's the app on my home screen that was installed automatically. This message will not stop and repeats so quickly I am unable to do anything, literally. I have to pull the battery and reboot. Please help.
Usually a corrupt cache. The following procedure will resolve most xxxx app has stopped error messages.
If you are using a weather widget on your homescreen, drag it to the trashcan. Then go into the settings menu > applications > all > application manager > weather and click force stop, then clear cache, then clear data.
Then boot to recovery mode (pull battery, replace it, then press and hold in order the volume up key, then the home key, then the power key). Once the screen turns on, release the keys and from recovery mode, wipe the partition cache (or wipe cache + Dalvik if you have a custom recovery).
That should clear up corrupt or messed up weather settings. You will have to drag your weather widget to your homescreen again to replace it.

Thank you so much for answering. The sign happens so quickly and so frequently it's extremely challenging, but I was able to delete it from my home screen. The app manager only lists downloaded apps and I think the one causing the problems is part of the standard package as I don't see it there.
I did find running apps. I did not see any weather apps. Things started happening so quickly that there is no time to do anything.

Not true. If you choose the "all" column instead of the "downloaded" column, you would see all of the apps.
settings menu > applications > application manager > all > weather

Phone app crash after update

Hi everyone,
after updating to cm-13.0-20160430-NIGHTLY-d802 and, afterwards, facing this problem:
https://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/124602-phones-screen-seems-to-go-dark-after-going-into-standby-since-nightly-install/"]https://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/124602-phones-screen-seems-to-go-dark-after-going-into-standby-since-nightly-install/
I tried the following:
1) Wipe System + Data
2) flashed cm-13.0-20160501-NIGHTLY-d802
3) restore app+appdata+system data with Titanium Backup
Now everything but phone app, works.
It crashes every time i launch it/answer call. I tried to clean data and cache of phone app but it didn't work.
I discovered that after disabling/freezing "contact storage" phone app works perfectly, but i don't have contacts this way.
Any help is much appreciated.
Regards.

9. My device reboots when I receive or make a phone call. Why?
If your device has Google Dialer installed, it requires to be set as the default Phone application. If not set, it will reboot your device. Go to 'Settings -> Apps -> "Gear Icon" upper right -> Default Apps -> Phone App' to set Google Dialer as your default.

Show all app in home screen - Nougat

Who knows how to bring this feature from marshmallow in nougat?
I make it work thanks to the S8 launcher, it has the option as naive, there is a couple of thread related. Or download the touchwiz launcher latest version from apk mirror
1.open the download file location
2. Go to settings, applications
3. Stop and clear all data of touchwiz home.if not you'll get a lot of errors (i.e.overheathing)
4.Go back to download file via recent app button
5.Install apk, reboot give a couple of minites to settle down.
6.Go to home screen options, have fun and enjoy.
P.S:I installed hello bixby only to enable other option in the hom screen, for me bixby is useless.
I hope I'm wrong but from what I can tell it's been disabled in the T-Mobile ROM variant.
I'll give it a try with nova launcher, may be it has a secret option as with the density of the screen.

Hi,
i found a solution that worked for me and can work for anyone which is facing this issue:
1) Settings-> app & notification->see all apps->3 dot at top & choose show system-> android setup-> clear cache and data
2) Go back-> scroll down to download manager app-> turn off all the setting and enable it again
RESTART NOW
3) Go to app and notification-> select Google play Store-> clear cache and data
Now start downloading any app.
