[Q] Questions on installing CWM - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, im a noobie with samsung devices and this whole Odin thing so decided to ask here before messing up things.
So, i want to install a custom rom. I rooted my device with towelroot just a while ago, so now i only need a CWM recovery. Can i just download the latest CWM .tar file for note 3 and flash it through Odin? Will the fact that i rooted using towelroot have any impact on this? Also, will towelroot stick when flashing the CWM recovery, or flashing a new rom?
Can Rom Manager be used to install CWM, as i understand that it is a supported device. Is it a worse way than going through Odin?
My plan is to make a backup with CWM and then probably flash X-Note rom if all goes how i planned it.
Sorry if these questions are answered somewhere, couldn't find with browsing and searching for a good while.
Im on N9005 and 4.4.2
Thanks for all help!

Use this to install CWM through Odin it is better.
When u flash the new ROM and after wiping, the root using towelroot will be gone but probably the rom u'll be flashing will already be rooted or u can root easily with CF auto root.
I recommend TWRP over CWM, especially for a new flasher
Cheers!

[Q] where to start? clockword recovery mod etc

Hi there guys,
I've been used to flashing android devices in the past (+2 years ago), but I don't have much experience with it nowadays.
first my current situation:
-I'm running MJ7 atm, rooted with kingo
i'm looking fo flash note's 3 4.4.2 kitkat rom, or omega rom, or cm11
If I understood correctly:
1) install a clockwork mod recovery for my 9005
> what "image" do I use for that? clockwork mod recovery doesn't have the note 3 9005 in it's list
2) install another rom through clockwork mod recover?
I've already tried looking for answers on this forum, but either they aren't for my specific device, or it doesn't explain the steps
Any suggestions guys?
The custom recovery is needed because... samsung's recovery is limited or something?
Trying to find answers to these questions!
In case I overlooked some topics, feel free to point me towards them!
Thanks in advance!

OK, so before you flash you need to know that if you upgrade to 4.4.2 Official your bootloader upgrades and you cannot use CM nor can you go back to 4.3. SO you need to decide which you'd prefer to do.
As for recovery, yes you need a custom recovery to flash a custom mod. -- CWM by Chenglu is the only recovery that currently works on Kitkat 4.4.2.
TWRP/PhilZ/CWM work on 4.3 - so you can flash anything up until MK/ML*
CM11/OMEGA/CRASH/ALLIANCE etc all run on Mj7/MK2-3/ML2 currently so are compatible with your 4.3 build
Since you rooted via Kingo, is your KNOX preserved? because installing a custom recovery will void this.

First of all, I want to thank you for the swift response!
So basically:
-once I flash original 4.4.2 I get a new bootloader and I cannot install a different rom except stock one atm?
-If I flash CM11/Omega etc it's no issue.. Any idea why though? CM11 is also 4.4.2 based.. but it doesn't come with new restrictive bootloader I suppose?
-I rooted through kingo, and during boot I don't see any special "text", so I suppose my knox is preserved
-about the "voiding", I found a piece of text in the european law here about rooting and voiding warranty that will help me if I ever needed that warranty
-Question about CMW recovery: If I install it from the play store, what kind of "recovery" do I need to install? is there a Database for that or some sort?

1- Yup, once you get the new bootloader you can't downgrade, you can however flash ROMS which are created with this new bootloader, so far SweetROM, AndroidNow NG and(soon to be coming) AllianceROM are NA6 compatible.
2-CM was built on the old BL source, it'll probably eventually get updated to NA6 BL at some point, but for now it's based on MJ7 BL.
3/4- Yup if you are EU like myself, then KNOX warranty means nothing to us, I was just confirming you were aware of this
-- CWM has to be installed via ODIN, takes 20seconds to flash via PDA option in ODIN 1.85. CWM will be your main base recovery and you can install/wipe/mount etc as and when you need to.
*Side note, my advice, stick with your current bootloader and avoid the new kitkat bootloader, install CWM and flash in temasek's CM build and custom kernel. It's a fantastic build! just need to install the gAPPS to get Playstore and google apps etc - also Official Nightlies have been announced and are live by CM**
Any other queries just post away :good:

Where do we find that piece of law? Im just curious since I'm also knox 0x1 Hehe. Currently running Androidnow but after 1 day it seems that I have some forced reboots. Don't know where it comes from. I guess it's because I installed the rom from external sd.

Did you dirty flash? - try another ROM, that may be a little buggy... However I suspect you didn't do a full wipe and that's the issue with the FC's

Nope, that wipe should be enough. Probably a buggy ROM. Try another and see if you have any issues.

Stock NG1 rom/root confusion

hey everyone couple of questions
im currently on stock nb7 with lean kernel
im getting some issues so i want to go back to scratch. ive seen on sam updates this is the latest version for BTU N9005XXUGNG1. is this the latest one?
im wondering if BTU s the correct one for me? im currently using btu and have been since ive gotten this phone. (just something id like to confirm.)
also ive seen a few threads about issues rooting NG1? this is the thread im referring to,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/general/root-root-xxufnf4-stock-firmware-knox-t2840150.
ive already tripped knox as soon as i got this phone so im not concerned with that.
the method i know for flashing stock is,
1.open odin 3
2.connect phone (just did that and odin sees 0:com5 (so thats good)
3. click on pda and load the tar/md5 file and click start
4. to root, load cf auto root file in pda mode and click send
5. flash twrp via mobile odin
any mistakes?
edit: also and rom recommendations, i currently looking at bobcat,echoe,x-note, x-note s5 port

The method done in your link was to enable the use of towelroot which does not trip knox when rooting. But at the same time it does not work on new firmwares like the NG1. BTU is fine, but if you want to try other ones then there are some ROMS with multi-csc via aroma. I'm no longer into TW roms, but was on XNote v16 before, pretty good for me.

Well since you've already tripped knox then yes, cf autoroot is a go. Wait, how did you triP knox and not be rooted? Do you have custom recovery? if yes, then some ROMS come pre-rooted and can be flashed through custom recovery. I'm on Temasek CM11, rock solid stable rom. About csc, i suggest staying with your current csc which is BTU.

No I am rooted and I have a custom recovery. You mean some stock roms come pre rooted? That would be helpful. Just flash through recovery. Doesn't flashing the official stock, update more, like the bootloader etc. Would flashing a stock rooted room be the same as flashing official

No, custom ROMS come pre-rooted. Flashing official from Samsung should always be done via odin. Now, flashing custom rom can be done through custom recovery or depends on the instruction of the developer.

[Q] I just want to be sure

Hey Guys,
I'm quite new on the forums, so forgive me if I ask questions that have already been answered a lot. Yes, I've read loads about 'how to root the Samsung Galaxy S4', but I just want your guys confirmation about my ideas.
1. I know for a long time now that you can use the CF-auto root to root your S4. But I'm wondering if it still works after such an amount of updates. Currently my phone's build number is I9505XXUGNG8
2. After my phone is rooted, I would like to have CWM as my costum recovery. I know that a really easy way is to install the ROM manager app from the playstore and from there, flash the CWM recovery. Again I was wondering if it still works that easily for the S4
3. After my phone is rooted and has CWM, I think I don't receive any OTA updates anymore right? (even when I just stay on the official TouchWizz rom)
If I don't get these updates anymore then what is a good way to get the newest Android TouchWizz versions? Can I just use the official TouchWizz roms from Sammobile that will come out in the future?
Already thanks to everybody who comments on this thread!
I hope that I can teach other people also something new.
Anyone?

1. Yes
2. I'm not sure. I always flash first non stock recovery with Odin.
3. Yes, You don't get official updates anymore. If You use latest rom from Sammobile You will loose root. Instead You can use prerooted stock roms easy to find on S4 forum. Or alternatively use any of custom TW based roms. Imo Omega rom is closest to stock.

If all you want to do it install a custom recovery and root the stock rom, you might consider just flashing Clockwork Mod Recovery in ODIN. Then using ClockworkMod to root the phone directly from recovery. It's 1 less ODIN step and it gets you to the same place.

Thanks for your reply! That is exactly what I want to do.
Just to be sure, should I do it this way?
1. Download CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar
2. Flash the CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar file with Odin v3.07
3. Download UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip
4. Boot into CWM recovery and flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip from the external SD-card (Because I would place it on the external SD-card)
Then I should be rooted right?

Yes.
And you can replace the version of CWM you mentioned with any other recovery that makes you happy, as long as it's a .tar install file for ODIN.
Why the non touch version?

Thanks A LOT!!!
I prefer the non touch version, because I'm then just a little bit more confident that I don't misclick because of touch (although that probably won't happen) and I think that the volume keys are therfore just a little bit more accurate to navigate with,
Also, if I have CWM installed and rooted my phone, can I then just install ROM manager to keep my CWM recovery up to date or do I have to flash a new one to get an updated version?

[Q] As a first timer on samsung what do i need to do ?

Hey guys i just bought this international exynos note 3 (N900) and i have some questions about it ;
1. I want to install all the roms kernels and mods i could find but in order to do that (I'm %100 stock btw) ,do i need to first unlock the device ( i dont know how i couldnt find it), then root it with CF- Auto root( my warranty is over so i dont need to think about KNOX i think??) Then use the dd method to flash a recovery and flash whatever i want. Am i right about the things i said on all above ? Is there an easier way to do it ?
2. Do KNOX ever prevents me from flashing things in ODIN if something gets triggered ?
3. If i am not right about the first question starting from %100 stock what do i need to do to get this baby rockin ? I'm thinking about flashing a stock lollipop rom with a custom kernel and root ofc. Any suggestions ?
4. Do we need to flash modems from odin ? Because when reading the AryaMods thread i saw something about updating the modem. I'm on 4.4.2 right now. Can we flash modems or even kernels from recovery ?
Thanks already!!

There is no much of roms to choose for this one. 9005 is most supported here.
Root using cf auto root.
Make back up of ta partion/imei.
Flash recovery with odin. Then flash roms in twrp (watch the ere about how to use twrp or YT).
flash stock roms using odin.
Can't i just flash recovery from odin then flash a custom rom after that without rooting ? Thanks!

If you are going to flash roms based on lollipop, update your phone to latest stock rom for your model using odin so you get latest bootloader.
Dude, you need root access to access system and write to it. Don't custom roms require root, if you take a look? (don't answer to this [emoji61] )
If you want that way, flash twrp with ? odin. Then flash supersu for your model using twrp. That way too you get root. Then flash roms after (read rom instructions).
Ask if all wondering. ?

No my question was; not rooting the device in the first place before flashing the recovery and the rom. The roms already comes with the root in it. So just to be clear first upgrade the base to lollipop from odin then flash a recovery and lastly flash a lollipop rom. Would this be your sequence when you just bought a new note 3 ?

Flash latest firmware then custom recovery then flash the custom rom of your choice. No need to root after flash official firmware but it's good to root first as you may want to backup efs before you start messing the phone. I backed up the efs for the past 1.5years but so far never need it.

I have Samsung -SGH-I337 (AT&T) i already rooted it by KingRoot.
Baseband: I337UGUGOC3
KNOX: 2.3
I need to install Cynogenmod or similar rom, bcoz stock samsung rom drains battery like anything and have lot of Bloatware from AT&T
So friend let me know how to install recovery like Clockworks and then custom rom suitable got I337

Your baseband is OC3 so you have OC3 modem. What is your bootloader?
If you bootloader is newer than MDB or MDL you can not install the custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. You are limited to Safestrap or Flashfire for flashing the custom rom.

You have a locked bootloader so you option to install the custom rom is limited to using either safestrap or flashfire.
This guide explain how to install custom using safestrap.
This guide explain updating, rooting and using safestrap. It is also useful if you screwed up and bricked your phone while flashing or tweaking.
Flashfire is newer thing and there is no separate guide written for how to use it but you can find the flashfire instructions in the custom rom that is written as flashfire friendly.

My first reference explains all the steps starting from the Kitkat NB1.
Since you'd already have OC3 and rooted you need to follow the step #4 Install your CUSTOM Lollipop ROM . step 4.1 explains how to install safestrap. 4.2 explains how to invoke safestrap and 4.3 explains how to install the custom rom.
I did not see OC3 to NJ4 that you were referring to though.
This thread is for installing S6 port using either safestrap or flashfire. I am just showing you as an example how to install the custom rom.

I recommend you to do all process from NB1 to OC4/OK2 keep root (Avaliable on the INDEX) bcuz I was lazy and used kingroot to root OC4 and when I finally was into safestrap it doesn't flashed any ROM and was just a waste of time.

I'm not the most indicated to show you the way because I haven't tried the keep root method yet, S4 it's my personal phone, was finishing semester and needed to be contactable.
I'm gonna try it right now and if I have success I will let u know in a couple hours?
I'm now on Albe95 LolliROM v8 ? and I'm pretty noob on this. I'll tell you step by step tomorrow cause now I'm tired ??
So did everything is working perfectly, what steps u went through ?

Proceed at your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damage caused to your device
First we must put all the archives we will need on the SD card (Stock rooted OC4, the Custom ROM we want, OC4 modules, OC4 kernel and all we gonna need)
Make sure to read this complete, understand it and then proceed
1. I used Odin to flash back to NB1 (the rootable one)
2. Rooted with TowelRoot and installed SuperSU and FlashFire directly from PlayStore (worked for me).
3. Opened Flashfire, granted root permissions and did the Muniz_ri Keep Root Method (4.4.x to OK2) but instead of using OK2 replaced all OK2's with OC4 files because I couldn't find the OK2 modules and will be needed to flash custom ROM.
4. At this point we have OC4 rooted so we just install BusyBox (install the 'things'), then install Safestrap and inside the app install the recovery and at last install the NC1 app flasher.
5. We will automatically reboot into Safestrap recovery and there we just have to wipe (all except SD card) then we proceed to install the ROM (if the ROM has aroma installer at the end we don't reboot into system we have to go back to recovery), after modules and at last we flash (install) the Kernel (we re using OC4 base so modules and Kernel must be OC4 too).
6. From here we just have to wait, and the Safestrap robot will appear like 4 times, we just press continue and deodexed custom ROMs will take about 15-20 minutes to do the first boot.
