I received a new 16GB micro SD card and put it into my phone.
I partitioned it in ClockWorkMod and started moving files (Music, photos etc) from the computer to my new card. While copying the blue screen of death came up on my laptop. This never happened before but upon reboot I tried to carry on copying files and it came up saying I have to format my card. I tried to format but it refuses to so I tried a full format, that didnt work either.
My 16GB micro SD card is now reading as 8GB. Can anyone help???
Have you tried removing the partition in gparted and then formatting?

I have, it comes up as saying the memory card failed to format.
You can't just format...you're going to have to repartition the card. You can use gparted like nokn suggested or any of the various windows partition tools out there. After you have set up the partition(s) you can format the card.
Just wondering what settings you used with the SD Formatter?
Did you enable RESIZE? Did you do a FULL Format with Erase on?
These two settings are pretty important. Another thing to look at would be [email protected], you can "KILL" a whole drive, which essentially writes a ZERO from beginning to end of the drive.

I opened up a program called Partition Wizard and I managed to unallocate the partition and then resize the card to fat but only up to 8GB. It still refuses to be formatted or for anything to be written on it.

In SD Formatter v3.0.0.0 I opened options I selected Format Type as Full Erase and Format Size Adjustment as On and it came back as failed. Now my card is showing up as 8MB . It is also saying the memory card is write protected.
i dodged a bullet last night with reflashing my rom with many thanks to rytesyde for his help with that.
so i went to backup my rom this morning and i came across this.
----------------------------------------------------
no sd-ext found. skipping backup of sd-ext.
generating md5 sum...
backup complete
----------------------------------------------------
that happens all the time with any sd card
after that i reboot the phone and it goes into preparing sd card and then this happens
"The SD card has an unexpected problem. Tapping....."
i take the card out, format it reload my data back onto the card, and put it back in the phone everything is fine unless i try to backup again.
that is with a sandisk 16GB card
i have the 2GB card that came with the phone and that seems to work fine.
i can only guess its the card. but i havent had a single problem with the 16 gig card, ever.
so what i have done is backed the phone onto my 2 gig card, and use my 16 gig as i normally would.
any ideas, suggestions. fixes?
have you ever found out what the problem is with this? i have noticed that mine is not recognizing the sd-ext partition. i have formated my card with ubuntu, and even with amon-ra 1.7 on my G1. each time i try tou mount sd-ext, it says it's not found or some problem. i have even tried using the various varietis of clockwork for the Shift and even tried using clockwork on an original EVO. i have tried with the stovk 2gb as well as a class 2 8gb and a class 6 8gb.

Your sdcard is partitioned or no
Sent from my HTC Knight using MikRom(again)
sd-ext is used for Apps2SD and this is not currently implemented on any ROMs for the Shift.
Not sure what the issues are with the OPs SD card but might want to buy a new one. I'm not sure the SD-ext is related

I think the recovery was just looking for a partitioned sdcard..ext4 is used by evervolv if I'm not wrong and if it isn't partitioned cwm will still check it..in short sdcard isn't broken

i still cant figure out why CWM wont recognize the sd-ext part of my card. i have the newest flavor thats wimax friendly. i have tried placing the partition before and after the fat32 part. still no go. i have reformatted the entire card to fat32 and then tried parting it in CWM. it coed through the process as if it's formatting it and when i go back in to check, it's not there, ot it again doesnt recognize it. i have tried every combination i could come up with and still no beans.
eventually there will be other supported roms for the shift that could/would use the ext4 part. right now i'm running the cm6.1.1 flavor because it's not SENSE and is a fraction of the size of that monster ROM. i can deal with not having MMS.
i'm just curious if anyone else is having problems getting their device to recognize the sd-ext
IE go to mounts in CWM and click on mount sd-ext. mount or no mount?
partition a card with CWM and see if it creates an sd-ext part and if so, does it recognize it afterwards.
i'm about to try this: re-format the entire card to fat 32 in ubuntu, then try to reformat to ext4 and fat32 in CWM. i no CWM wont recognize the sd-ext afterwards, but im going to see in ubuntu if CWM created the ext4 part.

alright here is a play by play...
1. deleted ext4 and fat 32 in ubuntu
2. placed the card in my EVO (not shift for now) and entered fastboot then recovery (CMW)

13. open gparted
14. mounted as fat32-6.45GB and ext3-976.76MB ~~~just now noticed that CWM made the sd-ext as ext3!!~~~
15. unmount ext3 then formatted to ext4
16. close gparted and remount drive - fat32-6.45GB and ext4-976.76
17. unmount drive and place back in EVO

Why are you partitioning the card with ext4? There is no apps2sd utilized for the Shift at this point.
CWM is parting the card as ext3. i used ubuntu to change that to ext4. CWM doesnt recognize the ext3 or 4. it created the ext3 and doesnt even recognize it. i'm wondering if it has something to do with an incompatability with the evo and evoshift's hardware and the CWM's software design. a quirk or two. i was under the assumption that the evo shift was basicly the same as the G2, Desire Z, and the (rumored?) Merge.
just realized you asked why... sorry. just because there isnt at this point, doesnt mean it could/would not be used later. i just noticed it wasnt working, so asked the question as to why. it seems as if it should work.
Hey guys,
I decided to setup my sd card today cause my phone internal memory was constantly running out. I followed the stickies on how to partition the SD using EASEUS. After I partitioned the app2sd partition, i booted up my phone. The phone says there is no sd card. So i rebooted the phone and mount my SD card through recoverymod. I can still see my sd card and files inside of it, but it only has 7GB left instead of 8GB. EASEUS too only detects only one partition of 7GB. Other then mounting the storage through recoverymod's Mounting USB Storage, the sd card cant be mounted anywhere else. Recoverymod shows Error: failed to mount /sdcard for all functions that require the sd card.
Has anyone came across this problem and fixed it ?

It seems that your sdcard is corrupted.
Try to backup all data and reformat all partitions in linux
Windows can't recognize second partition on sdcard & it can sometimes mess up the partition.
Try GParted (google it).

Did you make a backup of your sd before creating the sd ext partition
? Should be written in each tutorial concerning sd ext creation.
Otherwise your data is no more.
As already written, windows is not able to read a sd ext partition. its fully right, that your fat32 partition shows only 7gb, the other 1gb is used from the sd ext and not viewable by windows.
...to create a sd-ext very easy go into cwm-advanced-format sd card and chose 1gb ext 0 swap.

Try this :
Backup all data in your micro SD.
Open & boot your computer using Gparted Linux / Parted Magic Linux / any other linux that has GParted / Parted inside its LiveCD
Run Gparted.
Delete all partitions.
Options:
Create sd-ext partition using GParted :
Create 1 fat32 Partition (as Primary) & adjust the size to your liking
Create 1 ext3/ext4 (as Primary...check if your android kernel support ext4) & adjust the size to your liking (usually 1 - 2 GB is enough)
Create sd-ext partition using CW Recovery:
Create fat32 Partition (as Primary...use all space)
Boot HD2 into AD Recovery
Go to Advanced menu
Format & choose sd-ext partition options
Flash your fav. ROM
Notes:
I personally like Parted better than GParted as it's a lot quicker & more advanced options (GParted is only a front-end for Parted).
Parted is for advanced user & TUI.
If you want to try Parted, make sure you read the manual & understand everything related to your actions (open console / terminal & type : man parted)
Use Parted using Root access (open console / terminal & type : sudo parted).
Use it with caution as it can wipe all of your hard drive data !
For more info about Parted try this link :

I am writing this n00b friendly howto for anybody who will encounter similar problem that I had, since I couldn't find much info how to solve it on this forum.
Recently I have flashed CM9 and later CM10 preview on my Galaxy S3 I9300 with 64 GB Sandisk SDXC card. The card was formatted in Samsung stock ROM, so naturally, it was formatted as exFAT. CM9 and CM10 reported it as "damaged SD card", but this was expected, since open source AOSP ROMs do not support exFAT. However, when restored to original stock ROM via CWM recovery, the stock ROM was showing "damaged SD card" error, too! Not sure why this has happened - the only info I found was someone mentioning that "CM9 is known to do this on exFAT cards" on this forum.
Connecting the card (via adapter and card reader) to computer didn't help - it showed as a RAW partition, Windows was asking to format it and even reported incorrect size. Trying about 7 different open source and commercial recovery tools did not help. However, if booted to recovery mode, CWM could see the card just perfectly!
So this is how to get the data back:
1. Boot to CWM recovery mode (power off the phone, then hold Volume Up-Home-Power buttons for 5 sec)
2. When in CWM recovery mode, connect phone via USB to computer. The phone should be recognized and drivers installed (if not already).
Note: I had problems with Windows recognizing the phone in recovery mode on some PCs (only 1 out of 3 worked, actually). To solve this, installed drivers from Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit (first step after toolkit installation) and problem gone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
3. Run adb command (from Android SDK platform tools) to ensure that the phone is visible to operating system - it should show serial number of the device and "recovery" next to it:
adb.exe devices
4. Browse the phone to find the location of sdcard (mine was /sdcard):
adb.exe shell
Note: when first time connected to phone via "adb.exe shell", running "ls" in /sdcard directory came out empty. Had to "exit" from shell and do "adb.exe shell" again.
5. Pull the files from your device using "adb.exe pull" command:
adb.exe pull /sdcard c:\temp
replace /sdcard with your sdcard directory on the phone (if different) and c:\temp with other folder on your PC, if you wish.
That's it! After files are copied, reboot to stock ROM and reformat the card. You can now copy all data back to it from your PC!
Now I'm trying to find a way to format the card to FAT32. Seems not so straightforward with 64GB cards!
Sincerely,
satanxda

I had the same problem. From stock went to CM10, exFat got corrupted and then went back to Stock still external storage card showed as damaged.
I took the SD card out and put in adapter and then connected to PC. Then from command prompt ran chkdsk <Drive_Letter:> /f and it fixed the errors without me copying the files to PC.
Hope this helps.
And to format 64GB sd card from exFAT to FAT32, use guiformat tool or EaseUS partition master. I have formatted my card to FAT32 using EaseUS partition master.

With this problem you can restore data in more easily way.
Insert your SDcard in CardReader, connect to PC, run Command line (cmd) and type:
chkdsk X: /f ,
where X is your card volume name. After operations is complete, you can use you card again and NO data had been lost.
Sorry for my bad english.

Tried it before posting this howto, but EaseUS didn't see the card at all. Windows disk manager in the meantime reported incorrect size (27 GB for a 64 GB card) and when formatted with guiformat I got a 27 GB partition. Could be a problem with card reader - will try another one as soon as I get my hands on one ;]
mahendra1020, magicm3n: in my case using chkdsk was not possible, since Windows showed the SD card as a disk with not formatted RAW partition (suggested to format it). To run chkdsk, partition type must be recognized.
And by the way, thanks everyone for comments and suggestions!

Yeah even in my case windows showed sd card as not formatted but chkdsk still works.
Try /f instead of /r as arguments for chkdsk.
Are u formatting as fat or fat32? For me both the tool worked.

Probably you are right. Checkdisk button was disabled for me when right-clicking->Properties on the drive, but anyway Windows was reporting wrong size of the card, so I didn't want to risk forcing repairing and didn't invest too much time to that. But as I said, maybe it's the problem of my quite old SD card reader
By the way, successfully formatted from exFAT to FAT32 by using this Android tweak to mount the SD card as USB Mass Storage device on PC (so basically turning the phone itself into a card reader) and formatting in Windows with guiformat:

And did you get CM10 to read all of the 64 gigabytes?
For me CM cannot read the SD card over 32 gb.
Formatted my 64gb SDCard using EASEUS Partition Master to FAT32.
CM9 recognizes all the 59GB+, reads and writes on the card just fine. Didn't install CM10 yet, so don't know if that will work...
FWIW; the Chkdsk /f command did fix mine, and just as well, cause nothing I did (on multiple machines) could get the darn thing to mount in CWM.
yep, chkdsk does fix my 16g exFat card, and it works back just fine now. and before, i tried the CWM way twice, nothing i could pull up, os hints "remote object '/sdcard' not a file or directory"
I've had the same issue, and am really struggling to get anywhere at all with it...
I tried the method in the first post, but running ls on /extSdCard just gives an empty directory...
When I mount it in a reader in windows, it reports zero size and a 'please insert disc into Removable Disc (E: )' when I try and open it...
Even when I just threw my hands up and said 'ok phone, format it' it just says 'unmounting SD card' and then just backs into the normal screen.
At my wits end with this, I suspect the card might be fried, but want to get in if possible as it has my only stock backup!

hmm, well storage isn't part of the structure when is run ls after using 'adb.exe shell'
tried it anyway, get 'can't cd to /storage/extSdCard'
interestingly, when I try and get into just the 'sdcard', which I guess is just the internal storage?
I run 'cd sdcard' and the folder that I get into is /data/media
this is confusing, anybody any ideas?

Please add this simple info to the OP!
P.S.
Windows 7 said the volume is in use and if I wanted to dismount it before it would allow to continue checking/fixing it. But at the end it worked perfectly!
Thank you very much! I had so much stuff on this card that I haven't backed up yet..phew
Thank you for this guide. Help me get all my data of my "Damaged" 64GB sdxc card
I have the same issue. Flashed CM10 M2 on my tmobile S3, got the error that SD card is damaged, restored stock image from backup, and I'm still getting the bad SD card error. I'm using CWM 6.0.1.2 and mounting the external SD failed. I don't see the contents when I connect through ADB. Mounting sdcard from CWM mounts /sdcard but that is the internal storage which is not what I want. I also tried connecting the card to my laptop running XP using a micro-SD card reader and running chkdsk but that reported the disk as a RAW partition. Any ideas on what else I can do to copy files off of the card?
The method mentioned in OP worked for me, using a macbook air with mountain lion and android sdk for adb installed.
After mounting the external sdcard in cwm and copying the files via adb I partitioned the sdcard (sandisk 64gb sdhx) with the inbuild harddiskmanager in mountain lion. You have to choose FAT (MS-DOS), it will choose fat32 automatically. After partitioning and formating the sdcard the card is recognized under cm10 and samsung firmwares.
OSX has no 32gb limit on fat32.
Good afternoon all.
I improperly ejected my SD card from my tablet. I didn't unmount it first. Now the tablet can't see the SD card. When I put it in a card and insert in my laptop, Windows won't see it either. I had this happen before and was able to find a way to repair the SD card. I'll be damned if I can find it again. I don't care about the data so that's not an issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Steve
You need now to try (with no 100% of positive results) your damaged sdcard like this:
1 Install "Mini partition tool wizard" on pc windows (i prefer minipartitiontoolWizard v8)
2 Acquire yourself a good and sane sdcard reader to transform your sdcard on a pendrive.
3 plug the card reader with the sdcard inside and open Mini partition tool wizard
4 if your sdcard is not there on the listed found partitions, sorry, you need to buy another new.
5 if the sdcard is listed on the found partitions, yeah! Lucky!
6 select the sdcard partition, and go to menu from the mouse right-click, and select "wipe partition", a popup menu will prompt "fill with 1111 or fill with zeroes", choose fill with zeroes.
8 a little 2 hours for wait, your sdcard be deep cleaned.
9 after the wipe ended, select again, and delete the partition.
10 after deleleting , you can now create a new partition again.
NOTE : all the processes will recover your sdcard only if the mini partition tool wizard recognized your sdcard.
