Mark an Article as 'New' - Java for Android App Development

I'm creating a bulletin board-like app on android and while in the middle of writing the code, this comes to my mind:
I want the newly fetch data(maybe an announcement) to have 'new' text beside the title on listview and when the user read/touch that article
he/she will transferred to the single item view of that article and when the user comes back to the listview of the article available, I want
the 'new' text to disappear from listview.
*Note: I want to mark all the article as new even though they are a month old as long as the user do not read/touch that article.

API to URLy the URL shortener

Hello
I just released v0.9.2 of URLy and it now comes with a simple API that can be used by other app developers to shorten a long URL via URLy.
So, if you are a developer and want to shorten a URL in your own app, but don’t want to go through all the hassle of writing the necessary code yourself, you can just pass the URL to URLy via an intent. URLy will shorten it with the service that you passed along and your app will receive a boolean to indicate whether the shortening process was successful or not, the short URL and, if any errors occurred, a detailed error message about what went wrong.
Why would anyone integrate URLy in his own app? Well, there are several situations in which this makes sense. For example, imagine you write a Twitter app and want to allow your users to shorten URLs. You could write the code to shorten the URL by yourself, or you could just pass the long URL to URLy. You can pass along the service you want to use (you can use about 20 services via URLy, like bit.ly, goo.gl or TinyURL), so you could even give your users the choice to use any service they prefer or provide a custom URL and / or user credentials so that they can keep track of their shortened URLs. And: The integration into your app is pretty much seamless. After calling the intent, a nice and small progress window is shown which disappears automatically after shortening. So, no annoying new window that the users will have to close – they never leave your app.
Take the following screenshot as example. The app in the background is supposed to be your app, the progress window is what URLy shows while shortening:
(sorry, I'm not allowed to post any images, yet, will update as soon as I can)
More information and a detailed code example of how to start the intent and receive the shortened URL are available on my blog in the API section. It's really simple and integrated in a few minutes.
General information about URLy is available in this forum or on my blog. Unfortunately, I still can't post any outside links, so please write me a personal message and I send you the links.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Iphone Style "Gruppled Lockinfo"

I'm loving android so far, however I severely miss my iPhone lockinfo screen. Without even unlocking the phone I could see the 7 day forecast, all my recent email (including who sent it, the subject and 1st line of email), all missed calls, all missed SMS (including partial messages).. All collapsible so they'd fit on one page flawlessly.
Can we expect to see a similar widget designed to produce this same effect.. so all of this is visible BEFORE doing the unlock grid?
More Details...
(I can't post external links as a new member, but if you google search "Section 27: Gruppled theme" without the quotes, the first link will show you everything)
Try flyscreen or another lock app.

[Q] Question about automated reply function

Hi guys. Developing an app with a simple enough concept. I want to be able to launch an app that has a textbox that a custom string can be saved to. When an sms message is received, the string is sent back automatically as a reply. So far I have an EditText in the xml and set up shared preferences so the string stays persistent if you exit back to the apps "main menu".
I have seen alot of sample code online but am struggling to get a decent example of my specific requirement that I could implement to what I already have in place.
Can anyone advise on how I could do this with the most ease?
I have researched smsmessagingdemo.java online and it's not really what I need.
And the "simple concept" is always a "killer" for programmers as they usually end up being hard to implement! LOL Such is the case here.
The app idea is a good one; kind of like your own personal "call waiting" app for texts.
just fyi
There's already a few apps on the market that do something like this. Otterbox is one example: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.otterapp.otter I think state farm has an app that does similar.

[Q] designing a new app question...

Can i get your opinion of this?
Let's say I'm building a new app and I'd like the business to take ownership of updating certain information.
One button will take the user to "Current Events" which may be updated quarterly. Could I have the business owner just modify an text file and load it to one of their web servers. When the user clicks Current Events, the latest text file would be downloaded and displayed?
Also, there would be a button for "Media Room" - would the smart thing to do be to embed a link to the videos that they are already hosting online?
thanks a lot for your input,
robert.

[Q] Display Company Field in Contacts

Firstly, hi to all the folks at xda-developers. I have always found this place to be the most useful resource when it comes to figuring out android, but never had an unanswered question till just now.
I just helped my dad migrate from a blackberry to a nexus 4, and while he is quite happy with most of the phone's offerings, he finds it exasperating that the phone does not display the company field from his address book in the people/contacts app. After a week searching online for answers, it appears this is indeed not possible on android yet, and the best advice I found was to manually change the company field to middle name/last name and then "everythings alright with the world again". Hopefully, the people on xda recognize that this is hardly a 'solution'.
I then set out to find an app to replace the phone book, but that was a dead-end. Too many apps out there, not enough documentation on what does what properly and most of the descriptions suggested that they were over-kill for what I was looking to do.
So, my question is this ... Does anybody who knows the internal workings of android 4.3 on the nexus 4 know if this can be a simple tweak on a rooted phone? I do not have any experience at all hacking phones, Im not even a developer, but I imagine the display is controlled by some sort of style-sheet type entity (xml?). My reasoning is that the information is already on the phone... The only thing that needs to change is the way the phone displays the information. Would it be possible, at some level, to edit a file to display an extra line of information?
Of course, if somebody knows of a specific app/mod that already does this, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Karthik
Oh yes --- IF it turns out that there is no way to do what I want without some major hacking of the OS, can somebody suggest the best way to unload the contacts from the phone to a desktop, some app that will automatically remap the company name field to the middle name/suffix, and then upload the contacts back to the phone?
The company is displayed right below the name in the top left corner of the people app.
At least in the paranoid android rom
Swyped from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
In the stock version, the only way to see it is when the actual contact is opened... Meaning, when viewing contact details. The problem with this is that when you have multiple contacts with the same name, it is impossible to dial the right one directly from the Phone App. Each time, one must click on the person's avatar on the left side, which does some weird 'half opening' of the contact, then click again on the top of that dialog box to open the actual contact, at which point the company name is displayed at the top corner.
In my dad's case, he has many many contacts with the same names, even same first and last (we in India have third initials that finally differentiate the persons!) ... On his blackberry, the company name ALWAYS showed under the contact name, and so it was easy to call the right person. With android, neither the phone app, nor the auto-complete introduced in 4.3 seem to care about the company name. So each time, he has to open the contact fully to figure out whom to call!
