[Q] What's safe to disable after rooting? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I poked around and couldn't find a thread on this....
Thanks to Towelroot I am rooted and have frozen a bunch of stuff with no ill effects so far. Is there a list somewhere of what stuff does and whether or not it can be safely disabled? I saw the SkywalkerZ script thread, and it's cool but not much info on what each thing is/does. For the Windows geeks, something like the Black Viper service lists.

I just looked up the big I9505 debloat list that exists and went off that, and then just tried freezing any more stuff I didn't need.

[Q] How do you remove preinstalled apps on a MyTouch 4G

First, I did search for the above question and got no hits. Which is a puzzle, but there you are.
Anyway, there are tons of useless clutter apps in my myTouch 4G apps folder, none of which can be removed by dragging to the trash can.
If anyone can point me to a way to delete them I would be most appreciative.
Tom
Root it.. then use titanium backup.

Thanks for the reply, but as you may have guessed, I am new at this, thus "root it" does not mean a lot to me.
By the way, saying "root it" to a bunch of Aussies might get you a few laughs in mixed company.
If you can direct me to any site or method with step-by-step procedures it would be a big help.
Tom
This is the easiest way
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
And titanium backup doesn't truly delete apps.
This method will tell you how
http://jaxov.com/2010/09/how-to-remove-stock-default-android-apps-easily/
But deleting the wrong thing will handicap the phone.

i dont know why ppl just dont search the forums first...wow.
Rooting gives you a level of permissions that allow you to modify system files and play around with things in non-userspace. Relevant threads will have moer info on that, or you can peruse the Wiki (link up top).
Regarding the preinstalled apps, my advice is not to even bother deleting them. It's not entirely trivial to figure out what the phone needs to run, and you might find out later that something you removed all of a sudden is necessary again. Also, the stock ROM has frameworks and stuff installed by HTC that you can't get rid of anyway. I think it's much much easier to install a custom ROM that has all that stuff removed right from the start.
We call those apps "bloatware", I can't believe none of you told him this yet..... grankins post for s-off(he has two save the ultimate for if your having troubles) is the most affective, use his alternate method midway through his OP.

The reason i didn't mention the Ultimate Guide was he asked for the easiest method. That is not per-say the easiest method. But i know it's the most effective method.
I didn't suggest ultimate either, it was for a backup plan if no success..... I refuse to use gfree, as I have no need for it.

Thanks neidlinger, jdkoren and Mrdaviso for taking the time to help a newbie.

That is an option of course, but it even has several games installed as well as Amazon mp3 stores, Yahoo mail, Yahoo messenger, Rock Band, and other crapware I'll never use.
It is pretty unbelievable that T-mobile will not allow those things to be deleted (hence my original question).
Tom
I would root it, then install a custom ROM. 3 weeks ago I had no idea what root was either, but with the step by step walk through, I was able to do it with no issues. The development section will help you with basically everything you are trying to do.
This should help too....

Galaxy Note FAQ

Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of compiling a Galaxy note FAQ, to hopefully help avoid thread clutter through repeated questions.
I'll be putting it here:
http://lishutterbug.com/note
It will take me a while to get all the information I can find compiled up, but you can keep an eye on the page as I update it through the coming days.
Any suggestions/comments are welcome.
If I make any mistakes, or if you have any information to add that isn't in this forum (I plan on grinding through every thread) then please let me know!
Thanks!
- Frank
Great idea and a nice start.
Thanks, well done.

Went through the FAQ, really great!
One thing is wrong though. Opera doesn't have any Night Mode.
There used to be a hacked/modified/modded version with night mode but it's an old version, and download links are broken.
BUT, I found this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281738
you should reference it, it's working, i tested it with Mozilla + Proxy plugin.
This way I have Stock browser with stock experience working perfect, and mozilla firefox for battery saving browsing.
Bookmarked. Thank you!

Right - I'll have to correct that.
There's no night mode, but there is a way to force it to use white on black.

Just added a bunch of service menus, some of which show some interesting stuff.

BTW, I was forced to help a friend get gmail widget on his Galaxy S II, and I realized a few things google did in Gmail 2.3.5 to prevent external apps from accessing gmail data, Hence, no widget without any hacking.
Eventually I came across a post which I don't remember where it is, which explained how to decompile Gmail.apk with apk manager, change some lines in the manifest xml, recompile, install and bam, Email Widget started working.
This could prove very useful on a large screen such as the note's.
On the 5th of dec, i get my own note, i'll be doing it and youtubing/documenting it.
Wanna add it to the FAQ?
If u can provide a back to top link to the table of content every end of the ans will be good
You write that you can use a SGS2 bootloader to reset counter using the jig. I did that with xxkka ROM and now my brand new Galaxy Note is bricked.
Thanks a lot!
Edit: It wasn't bricked after all! That bad flash only killed the screen! Got it flashed again with the orig rom without being able to see what I was doing! Now the screen is working again!

I have been reluctant to add mods/hacks to the FAQ for this very reason.
I only add stuff if there are several 'thanks, that worked for me' posts after it.
The problem with this sort of thing is that there is no guarantee that methods will continue to work with future updates. So it's inherently risky.
Perhaps I should just post links to the posts containing methods to do stuff.

[Q] First Timer Requesting Assistance

Thank you for this website and all the helpful information it provides. I was a long time apple user and was fed up with the ios so jumped on the bandwagon of android.
I rooted my phone it it a Telus i337M with the OTA update on it.
My question is what would the best stock to put on? I know it is a vague question ive been trying to do some research but i dont see anything that says it is compatible with the update that recently came out and I am a but nervous proceeding without expert advise. I like to have more battery life.
Id like to get rid of the bloatware as most probably do and TrulyClean 1.6 seems to be the choice. The installation is what baffles me.
If there is any information that i am missing that should be provided I have no problems with that.
Thank you again to who ever replies for your time. once i get the hang of this ill be happy to offer help to others who are in my shoes.
Too bad it your first post, best threads are frowned upon. Just try a couple of different roms and see what you like. Didn't people like different things. I've heard vision x is good.

Read the "pinned" threads in the general and Q & A sections. In them, you will find a list of available ROMs. Read the OPs of each ROM thread to see what they have to offer.
This thread might help you as well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557
And if your firmware is MF3, you can not put any ROM on your phone (yet). Make sure you do a lot of reading before you brick your phone.

Some roms display "4G" in the status bar when you're connected to LTE. Do a speed test and see if your speed is less than it was before.

There are so many outdated posts, it's really difficult to know a good list from a bad one. One link you gave has a list from June with a handful of apps. Another link has a huge list that is for some kind of automated script that I don't understand. I'd just like a list of apps that can be frozen from Titanium Backup if I want to freeze them.

The list of apps in that script are safe to freeze and that is why they are included in the script. You don't have to use the script, just freeze the apps that have a strike through them on the list. I'm not sure how to make it easier for you, aside from creating a custom list for you and that doesn't really help anyone.

I didn't realize there were crossed-out apps in that list. Basically, I just think it would be great if there was a master list with everything that is safe to freeze. I'll use the apps on that script list with strike through for now.

I would think that thread is more about getting xposed running, so a separate thread to show off and discuss mods should be welcome.
OP: I was using xemui and gravity box myself (xposed currently disabled for testing), but I had a problem with xemui not enforcing its settings unless I explicitly went into the app to disable-then-re-enable each and every setting.. I messaged the dev as I had never had an issue before, but now I'm thinking gravity box might have been interfering.. you have the same issue at all..?
@-n0cturne-,
Not that many people apparently using Xposed here or they didn't see this thread as it has taken over 30 days to get one reply to the OPs question so far.

Well, to be honest.. there's not much activity here anyway. I imagine most of us just keep checking in hopes that someone posts a custom rom, lol
I'd personally like to see more threads like this with specific topics, especially regarding coping with emui. There's a lot of great info in the original device thread, but delving through dozens of pages can be a bit of a bear. Even if there's not an incredible amount of discussion, I'll gladly take an insightful response a month or two later.
Well you got patience . I'm assuming more people are subscribed to the other post and would have responded by now. I got your point, but not enough posters here interested in Xposed to make it work.

Yeah xemui wasn't enforcing its settings for me either, that was my justification, I'm in the process of building a device tree for this phone myself and learning about how I can remove, I've only ever build for the nexus 7 tablet, so this should be a learning experience none the less ?

I'm really wondering if GB is interfering.. I never had an issue before my most recent fresh install, before which I had never tried gravity box as I assumed it didn't play nice with emui - until I saw this thread. Maybe it just doesn't play well with xemui.. which would be fine if it had the same options, such as a centered tray clock.
