Sorry for my english
If I understand you correctly, you want to root and unlock your device is it?
First, take out your battery, tell us which exact model you have by reading off the sticker underneath the battery.

So work for 2.3.4 too?
Im a n00b...try to research on how to root my SNS
I have a i9020T Nexus S running 2.3.4, and I'm also considering rooting for the first time. If I root, will that in any way effect my ability to receive future updates (e.g. I won't get OTAs from google, etc)? Note that I'm not planning on installing a custom ROM, I'm just planning on rooting my stock build.

Rooting doesn't effect OTA updates. Rooting is just a matter of flashing su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip. You have to flash it with ClockworkMod recovery, which most likely will require you to first unlock the bootloader. Follow the stickied rooting guide for your phone, the procedure is still the same. You can relock it afterwards if you want to keep the bootloader locked.
unlock bootloader = wiped out all my data.
i kinda wish I can create an image but then all the app allow me to do that requires root..lol
there already an open topic for this

please keep it all in one spot
I just had my phone to a shop to get it unlocked but they were unable to unlock it has anyone else tried to unlock theres or are there certing builds that cant be unlocked.mine is on orange uk at the moment
Can't you just unlock it with gfree?
You should be able to unlock the phone yourself using the guides posted here on xda forums. Theres a few so just pick one which you can understand and go for it.

Yeah post all the details above and we'll get you going
Is it a prepaid phone or ya got it on plan? I'm sure if it's on plan you can unlock it free yourself. I unlocked mine last night. Just follow the instruction on your mobile carriers website.
Cheers

I was one of the lucky ones who was able to use this simple video tutorial.

Take some time to read through these forums. Also look at phandroid. Both are great communities to help you unlock the potential of the DHD.

Completely explains how to unlock, well at least it did for me (T-Mobile UK) you have to strictly follow the requirements needed though, otherwise you will damage your phone.
(sorry if any of this has already been posted, and thanks to 'jkoljo' for the guide)
Dude, did you try the tool that you maybe used to root it? Try the sim unlock option on there too. Worked for me. Orange uk. Try root tools search for site.

That means you need to downgrade to 1.32 before you can do anything.
Check out the downgrade thread in the Dev Section.

its not rooted so no.
I dont know what rooted is thats why I took it to a shop to get unocked so I'm guessing no one knows the anwser
to unlock ur Simlock u will have to root ur phone to gain write access to patch / alter the file and have gone through the downgrade process to 1.32 FW. A shop prolly wont do that process for you as they tend to do the exact opposite and flash a non rooted Rom.
thanks, im new to this so this has really helped me.

I have had other phones unlocked by shops and they were not rooted so how do shops unlock them
So I know it is very easy to check if a phone is rooted....
BUT, can you check the date of rooting or unlocking the bootloader or anything like that?
Or is that information just not accessible?
Do you work in phone repair center?

Nope.
I have a friend who brought an old phone and we're just seeing what information we can find out about it.

This is for the Japanese model, last time I checked the USA model is running different rom's and different frameworks.
If would be nice to figure out how to use the bootloader first

Just because its open source doesn't make it easy to root, we don't even have the source.
We should be focusing on the boot loader, once we have that we can ditch the Sharp ROM and make a custom pre-rooted ROM

The developer is Google, its the open source version of Google's android os. The developer is sharp there the ones who build the image. IF there was a inherent ability to root AOSP itself then we would not have this conversation, it would mean that every device could be rooted even the ones that are still unrootable today after years of waiting.
We need to stop trying to contact sharp, there not going to help (mainly because we don't have any contacts, the support staff has no clue what were talking about.) we need to contact other developers to make a root. The problem is that not that many people own this device. People would rather buy a Moto G because its easy to root and unlock the bootloader. We need to find people who actually care (not me, I'm way to busy with work and school, its not like I get paid to hack).

which is true, developers like me who like the design will jump on once the boot loader is unlocked. Please contact developers that have experience and give them reasons to take there time out and buy and root and unlock the boot loader on this device! This is money and time that were talking about, we need good reasons.

I've rooted / flashed roms onto HTC and Samsung devices before but I'm pretty lost with this one...
My model number: ALE-L23
My build number: ALE-L23C605B140
I have two simple(?) goals.
- get root access
- install a custom rom
Which threads should I be looking at to make sure they are compatible with my device? Any help or insight into this is greatly appreciated.
Seems like I am not the only one.... Can you check your vendor & country code? My build # (B044) is even older than yours.
As for ROOT, I come across this but I haven't try

Hi, whatid. I don't know where I can check this. I don't see anything like it in the "About Phone" section of settings. How do you know that the threads about custom roms and rooting here on XDA don't apply to our phone model/version?

the vendor and country code can be seen by going to the dialer and pressing *#*#2846579#*#*
you can try this method. its a standard root methode that works without changing or unlocking bootloader altough you're gonna need it if you want a custom rom wich are not available yet.

Thanks! My vendor is "hw" and country "la" (I'm assuming Huawei and Latin America?) The method you link to is also meant for "L21" models, how do I know it's safe to do with my L23 phone?
