Selinux status - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Does it matter what this is set to? Never really paid attention till I needed to change to set safe strap on wife's s4 so now am just curious
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I am not an Android tech expert. But, remember reading about it awhile back. It now has an enforced mode instead of just the permissive. Not sure if that just started in KitKat or not. In layman terms, I think it just does a better job at keeping apps from getting unwanted root access. I don't know if that means some apps may not work right. As far as needing to set it to one or the other, not sure. If you got a nandroid, you can always try it out--

As he said above me, just basically does a better job of keeping root apps out. For example, on the new NC1 update we got root with towelroot and Root Checker saw it, but we couldn't install Safestrap with SELinux on Enforcing. So it's just extra security from modifications, which of course gets in the way of intentional root mods.

Am I missing out by not rooting??

Reason I ask is because...I rooted my EVO now everyday I am in the dev section looking for new roms and kernels. I really don't want to deal with that stress with my Tab...Unless I am missing something that's a must have with root.
Tell me...
I don't want to flash a new rom yet as I just got my Tab on Friday. But I must say, rooting is necessary if you want to take full advantage of the device's capabilities. Barring flashing a custom rom.
Applications like Titanium Backup and Market Enabler require the device to be rooted. And those are just the ones I've installed thus far. I'm sure there are many other useful applications out there which require su access.

Is annoying!
Market Enabler and Root Explorer were the deal breakers for me.
Stress? How can rooting be stressful? If anyting, it'll reduce the stress by allowing your device to function properly.

Qualcomm BatteryGuru vs. Greenify

Can't sleep tonight so just researching apps this morning. Have you guys or gals used either? Do you recommend one over the other?
BatteryGuru is officially made by Qualcomm so you would expect it to be pretty key to phone optimisation. Also it didn't require root.
Greenify had received many great reviews and the author is constantly updating which is good. Requires root however.
Thanks!

Greenify here and happy
I'm running battery guru and it works quite well, it'll take about 5 days to give you some savings, but it works. I'm way more impressed then I ever though I'd be...

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. I'm testing Snapdragon BatteryGuru so far but still learning and will let you know how it helps. Scared to root yet!

No real reason to be scared to root any more. We have the stock images in case you soft brick, boot loop, etc. I was worried to, but it was an extremely simple and quick root process. You just plug in the phone and your rooted after a couple mouse clicks
Also, I recommend freezing the ota applications in TiBu. Never know when at&t may send an OTA that could patch the boot loader exploit. Better be safe than sorry with this one.
Sorry to drag the thread off topic. Just thought I would throw in my $.02 after your comment on rooting. Best of luck

How does that greenify app work? Say you select all your apps, and then it hibernates them does it wake up when needed or if you get a message or notification?
The app specifically says not to enable apps that have certain notifications such as SMS and whatnot, so I would make sure that you don't do it to apps that you need to be notified.

They will wake up when you open them, then hibernate when you close them. Basically if you use it for all apps expect to not mulitask at all (looking at messages, wont recieve phone calls; looking at Internet, wont recieve SMS)
If you have to use either one you don't know how to save your battery. Get better battery stats and learn what is causing your battery drain. These apps only use battery.

Greenify uses a lot less battery then tons of bad apps running. I like using Facebook app but couldn't careless about the notifications and such. Yes I coukd go in and stop them but not all apps let me (cnet for example) so having a single place to hibernate the apps I dont want running in the background is nice.

You can`t, requires changing default system setting and thus root. Rooting is a piece of cake and offers much more advantages than only color/gamma settings bro.
I would love to root but allot of us use out phones for banking like Barclay mobile banking if you root the app wont work so this is why we need to find another solution.
Custom kernel?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It's possible to disable root temporarily you know for apps that don't work with root.

I know you do not want to root but I know some of these 4.3 roms actually are not rooted at first and you have to flash SuperSu. Now you can flash a rom you like set it up how you want it and then remove SuperSu which the app has the feature built in and you will have a stock rom with the colors you like and your Barclay app will work.
Edit: I use Google Wallet and SuperSu, when I turn off root with SuperSu I do not get the unsupported device error
Many people I know would love this! My company does not allow rooted devices to access the corporate network.

Really? That easy? I was assuming that if I did that, any color profile changes would revert! This is very good news - I'll just have to make sure there is an easy way to root and unroot. If I am stuck rooted, I am going to be in a tight spot for work!

Rooted ROMs and banking

There are some things that will allow you to temp unroot while you use apps like that but for a complete work around there is no option. Rooting is seen as a security flaw and that is why banking apps have made it so they dont work if root is detected.

Not all apps allow it. My banking app for the federal credit union doesn't allow rooted devices.
As for wanting the app. Check the market for temp unroot

Like others said it depends on the bank.
Since the op is in the UK, im guessing it's barclays i'm pretty sure they are the only uk bank who blocks root users. @Mubz_C you should go to Halifax, it's better

Ha... Even Halifax have said their next update will be an app that won't work on rooted devices, hopefully one of these root cloak apps will suffice as a workaround.

But seriously, I am a Halifax customer and I am pissed at the new update, they have already implemented it so now I can only use there sh*tty mobile ui.

You had to expect it. I mean root is a security issue on devices. Last thing you need is a root app that has a built in Key logger.
Need help.. root cloack+xposed, magisk (hide root) can not help?

There is no way to hide Xposed, u'll have yo disable it. Magisk works well if u don't have Xposed.
Ps: don't know what detection method the bank app u reference uses.

screen mirroring, s-health when xposed is installed. Those are the few that i've read. Probably there's some more.

Screen mirroring DEFINITELY works after root - I just tested it and no problems at all :good:
Also some apps that detect root, such as skygo, virgin anywhere which wont work on rooted devices
I don't care about the knox, but need the apps to work so no root for me.
My phones rooted with omega ROM installed.

My battery on my s 5 has been superb. Can't complain about performance either even though I'm running Dalvik
yes, i root al my phone i want have admin privileges on my phone but with the root no ota, no update and good bye warrantly ,and yes i don't see at this time any real improvement the s5 n any custom rom ,i thing that is the fact the developper go to more easier device .
You can have adblock without root, yay
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726443
And you can disable more Samsung unused features and free up RAM with Startupmanager free.
I found firewall that didn't need root too.
But still no solution to slow Samsung updates and change of look of phone interface without root.

Cannot imagine not rooting. Tasker, TiB, Secure Settings, Nandroid, Clocksync, etc., etc.
